So you finally got around to painting this guy huh? I like him, I even like the way you did the washes except for the backpack really. My only critique really is I don't like the fact he doesn't have a face but that's just me.

But the lack of face is his defining trait! Ohwell, we're all entitled to our opinions and tastes. Glad you like the rest of him though.

:biggrin.:

I'll take that as a good thing, ya?

Hail to the Ruined King, my Brothers and Sisters.

I did a few things tonight with my free time aside from working on commissions, and of course that's what I'm here to show you. First on my list, I was rewatching one of my absolute favorite movies, Jacob's Ladder, and felt the need to work on some Night Lords. Haven't really done anything with them and I got started on a few boys, but I only finished one. He's a bit plain, but I'd like to try and add some more effects with his paint up rather than model it on.

Next up, while I was rummaging through my bitz box, I came across this little fella again. He may be familiar to a few of my older followers but a long time ago, back with the 4th ed codex, I was trying to create some horrific zombies to use as lesser daemons. Now that plague zombies are a thing, I think that maybe I should give it another shot, this time with more gusto. (and lots of use for Blood for the Blood God)  Expect a new paint coat on this little fella some time in the near future.

And lastly up on my list is a prototype of my newest character project, Arisen Knight Savan, Champion of the Ruined King. Savan is essentially the paragon of the Chapter's mentality and its virtues, something I tried to translate as much as I could into his armour. Like I said before, this is still a very prototype piece so any comments on him would be greatly appreciated.

As always, enjoy.

That's what a champion should look like. I like that "knightly arrogance" in his pose and the way you've used the sorcerer book on his shield to make the Word Bearer symbol. Will we see some personal heraldry or similar on the shoulder shield?

This right here is a prime example of why Chaos Space Marines will always be cooler than Space Marines.

yeah dude I had to read the fine print because at first I didn't think you had painted it.

That sounds cruel but it isn't really.

Looks like you are having fun with it, and you have come a long way forsure!

If I may add some notes to Krautscientists advice-

I really had "The Fear" when it came to highlights, and I conquered it thusly (though still learning myself)

For my example lets say we have a wet pallet and some acylic medium and some super sexy series 7 brushes (it sounds like a cope out, but honestly if gw sold these brushes they would sell more minatures)

so anyway say we are painting red...

I take my red and mix some highlight colour into it (red is tricky and i'll let you figure your color out)

line up 4-5 dudes that have been basecoated and washed (this is important as it means I do not focus too much on any one and apply the highlights sparingly accross them all)

then take your super fine brush and using the side of the tip of the brush, i just hit all if the really obvious corners edges...

Now I judge.

Are my highlights too big? Too thick? are they bright enough?

Now I have somewhere to work from, I like to mix up say 3 steps (from my two colours) and go about correctly my first run through...

For the real magic to happen you must insure you use a medium and keep your paints thin, so the steps dry somewhat transparent naturally blending into each other....

I hope that makes sense and is helpful...

lighting effects, plasma weapons and power swords are great for practicing this, because even if you mess a step up, you just go back down a step and correct it...

for really special sword etc you can mix up more steps so say dark blue/light blue 3/1, 2/1, 1/1, 1/2, 1/3 then add whit for the last step...

this is why you need the wet pallet so your mixes wont dry out (or you could pre mix them I guess)

These are my discoveries

Really hope you dont think I'm just being an :cuss. I figure you already build some of the sweestest marines about the place so I will just keep hassling you until they get the paint job they deserve :biggrin.::tongue.::biggrin.:

But actually I'm all out of tricks now, maybe I should go and judge my own lot :)

Barabas Sogalon -  Well, I was somewhat skeptical in thinking that it might not be very good or too much out of place, but this gives my confidence that I did my job right. Personal Heraldry is in the works, got a small sketch on my table I did in Medieval Literature class yesterday.

The Nephilim -  Here ye!

Jimmy -   Thanks mate. I'll keep it in mind.

Well, duh, like how much body heat does the head generate? Tons. We could be cool if we didn't have heads too. Seriously. :P

Great model NC!

Great model NC!

That was the absolute worse joke I have ever seen, Honda... :P

Alrighty, just caught the last few pages. Loving what you're doing in here. Plus I can never complain about more Nightlords ^_^

Savan looks excellent. He's like a perfect blend of knightly temper and chaotic dominance. Ace execution! It doesn't hurt that he uses my absolute favorite helmet. Keep up the good work buddy, I'll be checking in far more often.

Flint13 - Hahaha, thanks. The funny thing about Savan is that aside from a weapon and shoulder pad exchange, this is what used to be my Emperor's Champion for my Black Templars. But now that I simply cannot in good conscious play them I had to find a new use for my boy. God I miss the hate...

Elduderino - But I like the warrior crests, atleast on the Forge World heads...

Anaziel - That's alot coming from some backwater Blue Boy. :D Thanks man.

You do a great job on angling your arms. Maybe that sounds silly, but I see a lot of examples where they are not moved enough (looks stiff) or they are moved into positions that just look like they are flailing or at an unnatural angle. Your sword arms in particular- nice work!
  • 1 month later...

So, not really an update, as I just haven't had much time to work on any models of the sort lately due to a mix of school and being sick. However, I did get a wonderful package the other day by none other than our good friend Clourophobia. Of course, I had to rush to the hobby store the next day and pick out some frames for these beauties, and here they are. The larger one is his stunning Konrad Curze piece that he made for Halloween, the bottom being his equally stunning Sanguineous piece. I will cherish these... Sorry for the poor camera quality.

nice!!! omg i :cussing love that Sang piece! its been one of my fav 40k art pieces since i found it!

Wow, didn't expect that many responses for when I got back. Thanks guys, your support really means a lot to me.

well I thought with your chaos knights (counts as bikes)

it would be terrifying to hear word bearers chanting whilst slowly marching on a city with the knights at the forefront with the hounds sniffing out the fleeing innocents.

and maybe GS some ragged bits of flesh hanging from there mouths.

a very dark image that I feel the ruined king would appreciate.

every now and then I can be serious.

@jaspcat your a bloody legend! got some chaos knights sat around doin nothing.

That would be mine, actually.

your a legend as well then :D

Sooo, not so much a real update, but look what a friend of mine let me have along with a box of possessed?

I didn't really feel the need to make any substantial modifications. The model in itself is gorgeous. The only change I really made was obviously changing the spear head for something more suitably crude. Might do a few other minor alterations, but I'd like to just let the beauty of the model speak for itself. Can't wait to paint him.
