Oh man that last guy looks cool. Really menacing.

Just what I was going for. :)

I love his two different styles of pistols.

Originally, it wasn't intended that way. I just happened to have a MK III arm laying on the desk nearby and it fit the pose I wanted better than the other Destroyer arms.

Looks good. The mark III arms go well with the destroyer body, and i love mark II and V jump packs.

Yeah, I wasn't sure how well the III would go with the IV pieces, but it works, and I agree about the jump packs.

I'm wondering if I should paint the destroyer unit a different color than the rest of the marines. In the HH books, that seems to be a thing.

I may be mistaken, but I believe it was just the World Eaters' destroyers that were black, wasn't it?

All the others on FW's website seem to be normal legion colors.

Of course, I may be completely missing mentions of it in the HH novel series.

I don't think the World Eaters painted them black, if I remember correctly the armour looked black because of all the soot and ash and other assorted unpleasantness the Destroyers' weapons produced and they never cared to clean it.

I think you could see destroyers in two way.

1. A legion with a bit of pride would look to clean and fully maintain their armour, while one of the more broken legions would keep the effect of the weapons on their armour, due to general apathy.

2. If the destroyers are active in a war zone, the chances are they will have more battle damage and 'dirt' then other units, due to the nature of the weapons. But a more careful (or sneaky) legion may avoid most of the effects of their weapons on their armour.

So really its up to you how you paint them.

Well, the Crimson Sons paint job I've come up with makes them look very weathered already, so doing a different weather job on the destroyers won't be changing gears too much.

I paint all my Destroyers with burnt armour. Personally, I can't picture them in any other way.

Yeah, I remember seeing those. I'll have to come up with something for my Crimson Sons along those lines.

The Mechanicum made another delivery today, so that I may personalize my VIII Legion boys a bit more:

Are you buying straight up FW kits and discarding/selling the parts you don't want, or are you using a bits seller to cherry pick only the gubbins you actually desire? Your thread has given me all kinds of ideas, but I foresee many a paycheck being sacrificed on the alter of the resin gods to get my force to look just so

I'm cherry picking the gubbins I want, when I can. I wanted to try to keep my Crimson Sons in MK II and III armor, but the Destroyer unit made me break that. I could only find one website that even sold the MK III Despoiler(Assault) squads, and they wouldn't sell me just the arms with bolt pistols. I emailed several sites about buying 10 pairs of Destroyer arms, which I could GS a little to make them look more like MK III, but the only site that would even agree to do that was going to charge me $3 more for 5 pairs of arms than it would cost to buy the regular squad of 5, bodies and all.

Lol, that's just stupid.. Still, if that's what it costs at least you've got all the other bits and bobs to play with which'll come in handy somewhere down the line.

Enjoying the modelling so far mate, keep it up, currently one of my favourite logs at present.

Yeah, and it was a recaster on top of everything else. It's not like it was going to stick him with ten authentic Destroyer bodies and no arms.

Progress is a little slow right now because I'm waiting for a few more bits shipments to come in, working on the Contemptor for Grot's contest, and trying to make my own decals.

Exactly zero things wrong with having extra bits lying around.

They're just fuel for the fires of your conversion forges later down the road!

Love your work with the older marks so far buddy. Keep 'em coming.

Yeah, I think Guilliman even waxed poetic on how there is no such thing as too many bits in one's bits box.

So I finished the Contemptor for Grot's challenge. :biggrin.:

Well, sort of. I've still got a few more things I want to do before I call him finished, but I needed to take a break from working on it.

The basic idea behind it is that he was formerly a Dusk Raider Company Champion, highly decorated, that was grievously injured and interred inside a Contemptor. Dusk Raiders were kinda known for their bling, so I started coming up with ways to show his different honors and such.

A quick detour to show some of the changes I made. Here's the standard body:

I removed the bonding studs(or whatever they are) and the Legion designation numbers and then filled in most of the battle damage on the front with some superglue and sanded it smooth.

Next was adding my own version of the Dusk Raiders icon over the rebreather grille decoration and adding the lightning bolts - which are MUCH easier to do on a larger scale.

And on the subject of larger scale, I wanted to do the Raptor-and-Lightning icon of the Terran Unification Wars on this guy, but the original armor on the lower legs is a bit odd:

If I sculpted on that small space, not only would the icon be off-center, but it was really confining for both the design I wanted to do as well as the size I wanted to do it in. In the end, I simply decided to add more canvas by covering over the back end where the segmented plates are.

On the right leg is the Company Champion icon and on the left is the TUW icon.

For the knee pads, I went with some old standbys of a campaign badge and an Imperial Laurel.

The campaign badge is going to be black on the upper half for mourning the loss of his entire company, and the lower half is a setting sun, reminiscent of the Rising Sun flag design of the Japanese military. The Laurel is for heroism, and the story of which will be detailed at a later time.

And finally, a better look at the rotary cannon, as the barrels are so long that it's difficult to get the whole thing in focus on the macro setting while keeping the rest of the dread in focus.

He looks really good, especially the sculpted parts.  I have to ask, why the metal barrels on the rotary cannon?  Were the original resin ones warped and twisted or were you purposely giving the weapon a different look from the assault cannon?  What did you use for the round pieces that hold the barrels apart and properly aligned?

Brilliant Contemptor!! Your greenstuff work is simply amazing! The Unification icon is perfect. Having said that, the assault cannon is way too long for my liking, but that is only a minor complaint.

Can't wait to see the dread painted up :)

Now that's what I call awesome.

That is fantastic. I dont think there is anything else to say!

Awesome

This contemptor is incredible BCK. Your GS work is above awesome.

Thanks! I appreciate the compliments. :)

I'm quite happy with how the Unification icon came out and I think I'm finally getting the hang of doing the badges and icons and such. As for the Kheres, I've always thought the assault cannons, especially those mounted on vehicles or dreads, were way too short and stumpy looking. I wanted a more realistic look to it, both in terms of barrel length, but size as well. The original Kheres is just so huge it's completely ridiculous looking, and the ammo visible in the can on the back of the weapon is tiny in comparison. Besides, for rounds as big as those barrels, that ammo can would give you maybe 3/4s of a second of shooting.

To lead my detachment of Dusk Raiders is this cheery fellow:

Now obviously, Typhon was born on Barbarus and was never a Dusk Raider, so this will be a count-as with a different name. It's also why I changed the helmet and gave him a huge sword instead of the scythe. There's still some work to be done, but I like the look of him for the most part. Honestly, I think the pose is a little wonky with his torso twisted and angled over like that and I'm half tempted to cut him in half and re-pose him, but I'll take another look at him tomorrow and see if I still feel like breaking out the saw.

Tell me about it. The mini looks so good with all the detailing, but doing anything with that wonky torso is a chore!

I turned mine into an iron warrior, but I'm guessing yours will end up far prettier ^_^
