Hmm, I know we have a certain ...history disagreeing about this subject, but my advice would be to drop this particular plan altogether: Even with a much better print, the base will always lack the texture and depth that one would expect, and I imagine the effect will only get worse the better the printing quality is.

Take a look at this super helpful post over on FTW, though, which will show you how you can create excellent Space Hulk-style bases from cardstock (!) and, if you're feeling adventurous, some other household materials. This and this may also come in handy.

It'll be worth it! Seriously!

Here are some of my Space Hulk/underhive bases created via a similar approach, using leftover pieces of plasticard (actually old telephone and gift cards), some grating, old clockwork, modeling sand and a couple of leftover bitz:

Problem being I don't have the skill for cardstock, and nowt is more suited than copies of the tiles themselves. We'll continue to disagree, but I don't want to revert to the mess......

You're probably right. I'll just say this, and then I'll hold my peace on the subject - promise!

If you have the skill for the kind of conversions you do, and for the kind of painting you do, you have the skill for basing like that. It'll be easy, once you get into the flow of things. It'll also elevate your models to the next level, even though it may not seem like it beforehand. Plus it's actually kinda fun -- speaking from my own experience here.

If nothing else, you could always use the City of Death tiles cut up to appropriate sizes. You get plenty of ''floors'' in it, that'd look just fine in a starship. And it'd be easy.

Great Raptors, btw. :wink:

edit : Here are some filthy Xenos of mine standing on some cut up Cities of Death tiles, I was aiming for broken city, but as you can see it wouldn't take much to turn them into Space Hulk.

Yeah, nice stuff MM. Just too extravagant for moi, and 25mm squares are teeny.

It boils down to mess vs functionality, and I'm too old for the mess. Raising mini height is a no-no due to case restrictions, and I abhor the gradual decay of grit and bits in said cases. It's almost a cleanliness OCD of some sort. I based with flock and rubble back in the 2ndEd day, and it absolutely tormented me when I delved back through stuff with bits everywhere.

KS knows this already, and keeps pushing. :happy.:  I'm no top-tier fella, and you can't make me !  :tongue.:

Reason I'd settled for the scan method was that I wanted something unique (haven't seen it elsewhere through limited browsing) and it seemed a challenge - bear in mind these DA are purely for Hulk, nothing else, so rubble and colours are out, and the intention of making boardgame pieces with easily identified facings was to the fore.

Closest I've seen here: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2009/09/deathwing-for-space-hulk-that-is.html?showComment=1252203651089#c8029855357065040891

....but it sticks out like a sore thumb. I want something sleeker.

As for you dss, I'll deal with you later !

There's also this stuff. Think it was a bout £4 for a 10" square sheet. I got it from 4d modelshop im sure. All it needs is a black base coat and gunmetal drybrush. Instant tread plate. The mesh was from Halfords and again was only a couple of quid.

Well, despite being hammered by the warp storms up north (20 hours without electricity is a loooong time without internet) and generally feeling cold and flu-ish, I've finally finished hacking away at the SH Termies to create my newest Kheshig, the Berkut:

Sarge and trigger happy AC-

Didn't quite manage the box idea, so I'm resorting to the extra mag, and a spent one behind him.

Teleport Specialist and Pointy-

Part of my WS fluff is the fearful superstition and mistrust of teleporters, being involved in the disappearance of more than a few Khans along the way, so I kept scanner guy as an expert, someone to add some guarantee of sucess. Hopefully.

And this fella just couldn't be passed up. The genestealer head wasn't really appropriate though, so a lightbulb moment digging around when I remembered my Bloodletter sprues. Much more suitable, and a fairly easy fix.

You might have noticed the scrappy DW test model in the first pic, and I'm still playing with poses and practicing drybrushing, just awaiting Bio's present to see how it could combine, so I'll concentrate on these guys for now.

@MM

Scars ? Intriguing and a decent read, but ancient history for 40k.  :wink:  Always had my own take on brotherhoods, based on function rather than random icons, and the removal/derision of the noyan rank, given the number involved in those events.

@dss

NICE ?

Not quite yet.....

Now, before I begin, a certain someone shouldn't get too excited......

Thanks to the gracious Biohazard, I received some of the 28mm tread plate sheet stuff, and after furious cutting and gluing, I've ended up with stuff like this:

Just a basic prime for now, and plenty of dallying with shades and drybrushing towards that blue-grey to match closely as possible the SH tiles. With my colour sense, it'll be interesting.

Knocked up a few additional objectives too, a fuel canister with warhead (bomb), a lil' Tyranid standing in for a baby 'stealer, and the WiTD, to go along with the Grail Knight (thinking gold/brass armour) and CAT:

And the Kheshig sarge finished for now, as I study Mongol script to add some extra decoration:

Progress has been slow, mainly to randomly buying an Empire WFB bits box. Why ? I'm wasn't sure myself, until I saw the slew of gorgeous kit in it, and after digging out a smurf Sicarus body, I've been toying with an Inquisitorial warband, probably thanks to EdT's thread of wonderous ideas. I've certainly mentioned one in previous fluffy text, so I suppose I should follow through......

.....just need a damn Scion box first !

The bases are looking excellent, mate! Now be honest: Was it so hard? ;)

If you're serious about the Inquisitorial warband, I would suggest checking out the INQ28 board over at the Ammobunker for inspiration: Some of the stuff by the guys over there will knock your socks off!

Keep up the amazing work!

@Bio

Thanks, still ruminating over the scheme for the Berkut. Not 100% satisfied with sarge, but he's a start.

@KS

Errr, best part of a day taken up carving those bases ! I could've been making progess elsewhere, not to mention the poly fumes. Well acquainted with the AB, and it's Vader's scout body/sword helm/combat shield Crusader that's always held a special place in the back of my imagination.

Looking at Inq, couple of acolytes, Squat (jokero), Sister, and two factions of Crusaders/Duelists, sword/shield using the old fella heads, and dual-wielding hotshot pistols with the younger plumage hats. Then there's the twenty DW pads I've acquired....

@dss

Any chance of a link dss ? Didn't have much luck during my own searching, and there's a few folk I'm sure would be happy to know where to find it.
