Battle for Humanity (Legion)

Well I've made armor IRL and really the biggest difference between lamellar and scale is the way it overlaps. Scale overlaps over the row below it to resemble scales while lamellar overlaps over the row above it and uses rectangular plates. Oh and sometimes scale is layered over chain while lamellar is usually over a quilted gambeson or leather backing.

No worries, Kol. :)  History was always one of my favorite subjects in school and then I got hooked on the history of warfare, particularly armor and weapons. Lamellar became more popular than scale mail because it didn't restrict movement as much, was easier to repair since it's just plates laced together, plus it was also cheaper to make and required less skill from the smith. Materials ranged from leather (hardened by boiling) to iron and bronze.

It also featured heavily in samurai armor, and the Japanese being the perfectionist artists they are, would often contrast a dark armor color with a bright color for the lacing. They also differed from most other nations making use of lamellar armor by coating the plates in urushi - a resin made from the sap a tree that's basically big poison ivy - which not only allowed them to color the plates however they wanted by adding dyes to the resin, but the primary reason was to keep the iron from rusting in the awful humidity of the islands.

Kage: I think what you have done looks good. Maybe try and create more definition between the the underlying fabric, and the metal plates.

Jaspcat: Good start, it's best to work slow, do a little bit, wait for it to dry, then do the next. I can't wait to see how he turns out :)

Well, you also picked something pretty difficult.

One of the hardest lessons for me to learn with this horrible epoxy putty is patience. I'm guessing you tried to do all this at one time? You'll have to teach yourself to work in little steps - sculpt a small part, set it aside until it cures, sculpt the next piece, set it aside, rinse and repeat. That's why it took me so many days to do that helmet.

You also have to start planning it in advance because there are considerations that aren't apparent when you're first getting into sculpting, like if you're going to have room for your tools to reach without bumping into something else - which, again, is why you need to work in layered steps because if you tried all of this at the same time, you might wreck one side of the Omega icon while sculpting the blade and not even realize it. Another thing is that greenstuff bonds to itself, especially when it's freshly mixed and hasn't cured much. If you lay down a little sausage of GS on the back of that powerfist while the powerfist housing you sculpted is still "wet", you might have a hell of a time making any adjustments to it just a few minutes later, and if you accidentally press a finger into it when it's close to being cured, you're censored.gif . Once it starts to cure, it gets a spongy feel to it and it will no longer hold detail. If you try to smooth out a fingerprint and reshape the damaged area when it's spongy... not happening. Time to go punch something.

If you want to it again, what I would suggest is to sculpt the blade first and let it cure. Come back and do the Omega icon. If you're not 100% sure that you won't accidentally put a finger into it, I would just sculpt one half of the icon, let it cure, and do the other half. You could also try practicing by taking a decal sheet with an Ultramarines icon on it about the size of the Omega you want on the powerfist and then tape something clear over it - a piece of acetate or wax paper - and try to sculpt within the lines, so to speak. There was some Golden Demon winner a while back, ten or more years, that had all these incredible icons sculpted on his figures, and he had drawn them out on plain ol' notebook paper, sculpted on to top of them, and once the greenstuff cured, soaked the paper in water until it was soft enough to pull the greenstuff away from it.

Remember: patience, my young padawan.

Patience, patience, patience! And don't give up!

Thanks all for clearing up the Crux issue! I'll probably keep it then, less work for me to do msn-wink.gif

Also, that lamellar armor is awesome kage, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product!

And I really like the converted ravagers Jasp, I'm tempted to pick some up myself to wolf up, the helmet design they have is pretty cool.

Should have some more updates soon, nearly finished the Long Fangs pack, but I'm not really liking the look of them at the moment, they look too plain.

They are currently mostly in MK IV armor, so I might rip the missile launchers off and put them on some MK II amour that I'm going to buy, due to them being the old wolves, they will have old armour.

Wanting to maybe add some thunderwolf cavalry in, not sure if they had them back in 30k, but I don't see no reason why they wouldn't. Don't know how to include them into the army though using the betrayal rules :/

Wulox sounds cool. I don't see why they wouldn't have thunderwolf Calvary.

Bit of work on my Alpha Legion Praetor. His belt is a right mess, will sort that out later.

Looks fantastic, did you base the pose off the Legion cover?

On the very original version it wasn't intentionally supposed to look like the cover of legion, but once I realised I had ( very probably subconsciousanly) been copying the cover I just went for it. I think I may remove the iron halo, don't think it suits the character.
