Is that the forgeworld zone mortalis tile you have been painting? If so what is the casting like on those?

Cant wait to see more work on the contemptor!

@ capt semper..you dont need to know the green recipie...purple is your colour!

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for not being here in a while again. I had some school projects, and then fell ill again. Because of that I haven't really painted anything, though I've put several more models together, including the Fellglaive, the Iron Warrior Breacher squad (they're undercoated too), three more thallax, and some IH terminators. I also finished the battle report of my second Isstvan III campaing game (check the Liber Victorium if you are interested), but aside from that I have no new pictures, yet.

Oh wow, that gold is something special. It seriously looks like your Astartes spend plenty of time working on it with whatever the 40k equivalent of a toothbrush is.

I would like to see a little more "pop" from the eyes though. Maybe a last tiny highlight? As it is, they get a little lost under those golden eyebrows happy.png

Keep up the good work!

Thanks! The gold is really simple to do. It's just a basecoat of Vallejo Glorious gold followed by Agrax Earthshade wash, and the highlights with Vallejo Polished Gold.

The eyes actualy have a small yellow dot as a final highlight, but as you say it does get a little lost. I turned the models around in my hand and from some angles you could see the eyes quite well, but from others the golden ring around the helmet casts a shadow on them and I'm not sure if just an even brighter highlight would help though, and I don't have the skills to make them glow with OSL.

Great stuff there!

Can you tell us the recipe for the SoHs green?

And I agree with Flint, the gold is very special indeed!

Sure, here goes:

For the basecoat I mix equal parts of Caliban Green and Sotek Green.
Then I wash it with Coelia Greenshade, and again once the wash has
dried go over it with the basecoat mix again, leaving the wash to show
in the recesses.

For the highlight I add Celesta grey to the mix, but unfortunately
can't really say the amount. I usually just add it small amounts at a
time and mix it, repeating the process untill I'm happy with the colour (I mix large amount at once so the colour stays consistent).

Finally, I apply final highlights with Sybarite Green.

As, for the gold, as I said, it's quite simple really!

Yeah, it's the FW one. The casting is... very varied. Some of the tiles are just perfect, but with some I began to wonder why I didn't complain about them as I painted them, and most fall in somewhere between.

And, hey surely the EC could have taken some SoH helmet as trophies? I mean don't they take just about anything anyways...

Think that green would look good with Slaanesh symbols in pink.

Or the other way around too, I think.

Great stuff! Always excited to see Mechanicum items added. The sea green on the Contemptor is super smooth, a great surface to work on!

Now this Iron Warriors, they have a distinct Ancient Greek feel with the shields and the crest on the sergeant... And the sword too! I like! |D

Thanks for letting me know about the tiles..so kinda guessing they are like most of forgeworld products, some fantastic casts, some alright and a few bits poor...

And did you airbrush the contemptor? Super smooth paintjob on that!

Keep up the great work!

You got it right chaplain mortis, it's airbrushed that's why it's so smooth. I recently got replacement for my old broke one and decided to try painting the dread with it (I've mosty used it for terrain and really big models earlier), and I'm quite pleased how it turned out.

I've done some small touching up on the Iron Warriors too, pouches and grenades and the like, but no pictures as they mostly just look the same as in the earlier ones. However, I'm almost finished with the three Thallax. Actually, I thought they were ready but when I was taking the picture I noticed I'd forgotten the Mechanicus symbols!

There's a small "everything goes" (FW, Escalation, IA books, HH, etc) tournament coming up next sunday that I'm going to attend, and I've already decided to take a Horus Heresy force, just to show of the models. I was unsure which legion I would take, but now I've narrowed it down to two. The tournament organizer told me that even HH forces will use the standard FOC, which means I have less HQ and Elites choices, but can actually take a Lord of War choice despite the tournament only being played with 1850pts. So, the real choice is: Angron or a Warhound Titan?

Whilst I'm going back and forth with that decision (opinions welcome!) I decided, that either way I'm going to take a Mechanicum force in the army, either as primary (titan), or ally (Angron). So they need some reinforcements:

And finally, I didn't intend to get one until I had finished more HH stuff, but GW's latest release was just too awesome to resist:

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff46/Gorzag_bucket/Horus%20Heresy/Mechanicum/knightwip_zpsd93d53ab.jpg

I'm thinking of painting it in House Taranis colours, so that it can eventually take part in the civil war on Mars, but am not fully certain yet.

Not really, the knight didn't give me any trouble at least, and the isntructions are quite good. Then only problem I had was with the ladder on the top carapace but that's only because I kept dropping the parts on the floor. I magnetized the gun and that too was quite easy, though I made a small mistake and glued the thermal cannon's fuel tanks, before realizing that I should of course have magnetized that too.

As for the castellax, there's going to be more steel, but otherwise a bit similar:

Still WIP of course. I decided to give the hairspray technique a try with the red parts of the first one, and it turned out okay I think, but I'm not sure if I'll do it with the other two. Sponging on some silver might be enough on a model this size. Also, again realized afterward that if I'd wished to use a transfer on the shoulders it would be a bit difficult now.

The Castellax looks great - especially the weathering... The only thing I'd do differently is to tone down the shiny golden parts. Some Agrax Earthsahed will do the trick...

And the Knight? By the Emperor it's awe inspiring! Good luck with it :tu:

Thanks. Read my mind, did you? Agrax Earthshade was the next stage for those parts.

Ditto on the Castellax. Myrmidons yet?tongue.png Oh and the Thallax Squad looks Great.thumbsup.gif

No Myrmidons yet, but I will get them. I'm just waiting for Forge World to release the secutors too (and maybe Pyroclasts as well.I want to do a small allied force of Salamanders for my Iron Hands) before I order more stuff. And thanks!

ph34r.png should anything happen to you, can i have your collection of minis?ph34r.png

great work on the mechanicum units! love em

With the amount of organ harvesters on the move these days, I'm hesitant to answer the first question. I mean, just howmany Night Lords will show up at my door if I say yes?

Glad you like them. I always have a tough time choosing my favourite legion(s) but I do know my favourite faction lies with the priests of Mars.

Well, I'm basically done with the first of the Castellax. I will probably do some touching up and/or weathering later, but since I need to paint the other two before sunday, it's good enough for now.

Another busy day with the airbrush (and normal ones), having decided on the knight's house, and continuing with the Castellax:

So, house Taranis it is. For the first one anyway.

Just finished the other two Castellax in time for tomorrows tournament. With them my Legio Cybernetica Maniple stands ready for war:

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff46/Gorzag_bucket/Horus%20Heresy/Mechanicum/LegioCybernetica_zpsdd3ecc6e.jpg

Unfortunately, they weren't able to muster all their forces (yet), and as such their numbers are quite small. However, they are not without allies and in the coming battles, they will be joined by a compliment of Adeptus Astartes of the tenth legion, as well as the Lupus Ferrus of Legio Tempestus:

So, with the Mechanicum units done, it's back to the Iron Warriors next, I think, as well as continuing to work on the knight. Shouldn't take too long before I have more to so for the IVth.

Thanks. I do have a Zone Mortalis board in the works so...

And as promised I've continued painting the Iron Warriors, the preview of Extermination giving me some extra enthusiasm. They're almost ready now, only some work on the yellow and the bases left, and I'm quite happy with how they turned out:

The volkite marine is missing his backpack and the sergeant his right shoulder pad, because I forgot to glue them before priming, and only noticed/remembered after I'd begun painting. Meanwhile, I'm hoping FW put out a transfer sheet for the IV Legion, and because of that I've left (most) of the left shoulder pads off for the moment.

Haven't forgotten about the big tank yet, I've now assembled as much of the Fellglaive as I will before painting, and have even begun painting some parts:

Also, work in progress on five of the Iron Hand Terminators I mentioned earlier:

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff46/Gorzag_bucket/Horus%20Heresy/Iron%20Hands/IHTerminatorsWIP_zps2f8d6961.jpg

Those terminators look great! Also, a fellglaive, you lucky bastard!

Thanks! Of all the Forge World tanks it's definitely my favourite. Though I do want an ordinary Fellblade too, someday.

walk softly, and carry a big gun! how hard is that monster to build?

It was quite easy really. The tracks were the hardest part, but didn't give too much of an issue after a couple of dry fits. Had to file a small amount off of one of the plastic Baneblade wheels, but that was all. All the other parts fit well, and any small gaps were easy to fill with the greenstuff.

Ooh, I'm all about some Volkite Carronades!

A huge Martian death ray? Who in here isn't?

Anyway, I've been painting or building the whole day, and just finished the Iron Hand Terminators. I'll probably add some transfers later, but I will first have to get them.
