Flint13
Good Morning BnC, I wanted to get some thoughts and criticism of the small command squad I'm building for my Legion Praetor. While not the most competitive (especially since they're super expensive with a glaive *and* shield) I couldn't resist the urge to try them out for conversion opportunities. Anywho, here is my first command squad member, with 4 more and a standard bearer to come. In game (as in, not quite WYSIWYG yet) they are equipped with a chainglaive, combat shield, bolt pistol and bolter. If I'm feeling adventurous, they may even get a combi-bolter or two. Talk about being loaded for bear I think he's about 90% finished, I just wanted to green-stuff a few areas (like the head of the chain-glaive) to neaten it up a bit. The only problem I'm running into so far is equipping them with visually correct weapons. I could see removing the pistol to give him a combi-bolter and a holstered bolt pistol, but where would I stick that combat shield? I've tried my darndest, but I can't find a non-awkward place to stick a boarding shield... http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/P9280025_zps2180add8.jpg That one amuses me, since it looks like he just gunned down the skinwolf in the background http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/P9280027_zpsc8d71d59.jpg Criticize away, I really need some good suggestions for this guy. Wicced
first to comment. *rubs claws* i like the overall concept :tu: but as usual i got a nitpick i don't feel Night Lords when i look at him, my first impression of the model is Son of Horus or maybe World Eater. i think he needs more trophies or a headswap to look more like a son of Curze or maybe relinquish the topknot. as for the combat shield. why not put it on the wrist of the arm holding the glaive. Wicced
i made a quick sketch with paint to show what i mean with the shield. just a form and size i think would work... KBA
I agree with wicced on the look. It's a Son of Horus base already, that top knot just puts an exclamation on it. I like what you did with the axe though :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282556-savage-midnight-armored-up-an-rolling-heavy-for-etl-pg109/#findComment-3507647 Share on other sites
Flint13
Good assorted points! Mk, I'll try to simmer down my topknot obsession, but just for this project... Here's take #2 with a different head and the combat shield added to his glaive arm: http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/P9280028_zpsa8549d69.jpg Glaive is still a bit messy, but I'll sand the milliput down nice and smooth once it dries. The combat shield is much less clunky than I would have originally assumed it would be. So thanks for that, Wicced! http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/P9280026_zpse92a3d7e.jpg and a better close up of his new hat! http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/P9280024_zpsb8a3bec9.jpg Thanks for the replies so far! Anything else to add, feel free. The_Chaplain
I think he looks a lot more menacing with the head swap and combat shield. Looking forward to what other horrors are in store for this command squad. reckoning
I like the combat shield and the helmet swap but I have one minor critique. If this is a pre-heresy army should he have the iconic chaos arrows on his helm? The helmet is already menacing enough and borderline chaos IMO. Otherwise great start, looking forward to more! Brother Aiwass
Much better with that raptor head! Still, he needs some trophies. Flint13
Thanks guys! @ Reckoning: I've heard the argument many times that traitor marines during and just post heresy are basically indistinguishable from "modern" chaos marines, depending on Legion/Chapter, of course. I kinda like his little brow ridge... like an evil tiara. I've just been using my mixed Chaos/Legion list back and forth for whichever suits me at the time for so long, I've started to overlook little details like that though. Good catch. @Maximvs - I am currently rooting through my dark eldar bits for just that! @The_Chaplain - Thanks! I've got another guy with a combi-plasma and a standard bearer in the works! Durfast Spiritwolf
I like the combat shield and the helmet swap but I have one minor critique. If this is a pre-heresy army should he have the iconic chaos arrows on his helm? The helmet is already menacing enough and borderline chaos IMO I may be mistaken, but 'iconic chaos' arrows can be seen on FW Cataphractii Termies. Flint13
@Wicced - I agree, the head looks much better now. Unfortunately, that leaves me with 10 of the awesome SoH heads just kinda chilling with nothing to do now... The shield is from the vampire counts graveguard. I had two boxes of them lying around from back when I pilfered their helmets for batwings. I thought i should put at least a little more of the kit to use @Durfast - Maybe, lets check... http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/cataxebolt3.jpg Huh, yeah those do look kinda like "proto" chaos arrows, don't they? Wicced
graveguard, should've known i'd say you can still use the SoH heads, just don't put them on SoH bodies Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282556-savage-midnight-armored-up-an-rolling-heavy-for-etl-pg109/#findComment-3508743 Share on other sites
Flint13
Morning folks! Just finished up my standard bearer for your helpful review. The_Chaplain
OOO that bannerman is absolutely spooktacular! Is it possible to get a picture of the back of the banner as well as the wrist/hand holding it? I have considered finding one of those banners, converting it and using it for my bike command squad- just because the draping of the cloth is so perfect Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282556-savage-midnight-armored-up-an-rolling-heavy-for-etl-pg109/#findComment-3510608 Share on other sites

Wicced
I must know did you make that banner or get it somewhere? Looks great! Brother i think you got loyalist blood in your eyes again. Three posts above yours flint mentioned it's from FWs SoH command set, with a Nice pair of wings added i guess :p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282556-savage-midnight-armored-up-an-rolling-heavy-for-etl-pg109/#findComment-3511079 Share on other sites
Flint13
@Capitano - Good to know I have chiropteran approval! @ Wicced + Tanith - Haha, correct! To be fair, it was at the very bottom of a post under a couple of huge pics. I pretty much bought the forgeworld SoH command pack just for that banner and the two power axes they came with. The banner is pretty much unmodified except for shaving off the little wolves at the top to be replaced with nightlordier wings. Oh, and in the vein of finding better uses for stuff, those wings are from one of the finecast Nightlords helmets Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282556-savage-midnight-armored-up-an-rolling-heavy-for-etl-pg109/#findComment-3511226 Share on other sites
Flint13
Morning BnC! Taking a quick break in my normally scheduled command squad building program to bring you the HQ choice they will be guarding. Here's my sometimes praetor, sometimes Sevatar stand in: http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PA020024_zpse67dbf9d.jpg I tried to go for a simple but brutal look. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PA020025_zpsd01f1934.jpg This is one of my favorite angles. I like his little chain cloak thingie. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PA020026_zps236dd108.jpg Found an up-armored power pack to go along with his heavier looking armor in the thighs and shins. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PA020023_zpsc03716cf.jpg I need to find something trophy-like to go on his left hip to have something going on in that free space on the lengthened leg. Otherwise, he's mostly done. Yell helpful stuff! Brother Heinrich
Nice stuff Flint, really liking the Praetor/Sevatar stand-in. My only gripe is the skull on the shoulder pad appears to be defying physics, though I know that's just the way the pad is sculpted. Hyaenidae
Brutal. Get rid of those mold lines, and reposition the skull on the shoulderplate to comply with gravity, and this dude's gonna look like a badass. Any plans for paint soon?
