Savage Midnight: Armored Up an Rolling Heavy for ETL-Pg.109

Evening Folks! I won't lie, I had a little extra painting time today due to (sorta) hilarious circumstances. I got a little over enthusiastic at the gym trying to double my bodyweight on a squat... so two things learned! I can squat 235lbs (+5 x 2 me happy.png ) , but also pulled glutes hurt. So I'm trying to not move a whole lot.

So I got this done today:

Meet Kadrock Crogan, Legion Champion of the 28th and his axe Thunder Daughter

http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PB050014_zps807aa11b.jpg

The one eyed skull of the 28th Company, Saeva Nocte. On a side note, I love the position of his hand on his cloak. It looks like he's about to make like Bela Lugosi.

Ever seen one of A D-B's krag cougars? Me neither, but here's all its important bits:

http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PB050008_zps8f2a6815.jpg

And its pelt, for when Nostraman midnights get a mite nippy

http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PB050011_zpsd1ca054f.jpg

And the charmed skinning knife that opened its throat

http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PB050010_zps4f317d54.jpg

What do you folks think? I like him, even though I'm not 100% on highlighting red yet. But he is a lot brighter and a bit of a quick change of pace... aaaaand just saw the mold line on his helmet.

Wow... I can't pretend like I don't love some positive response. Let's see what we can chat about happy.png

@DeathSpectre - I'll find it eventually *noble fist clench* for the Nostraman children!

@Forte - Thanks! Your tips worked pretty well, I have to say. Basing it in Astronomicon makes it *so* much smoother and less glaring. Still, I'm better at blue, it's more my ... Forte cool.png (yyyyeeaaaahhh)

@Heathens - Glad to hear it. Your new work isn't looking shabby either! As for the white, mine is actually mixed with a bit of Badab black, but I'll be darned if you can tell.

@Heinrich - If we can't shamelessly plug ourselves to exhaustion, what are we doing here? laugh.png And thanks! I'll give that method a try. I've been using Tamiya clear red with different mixes of Devlan and Badab so far. Your method looks like a better idea since I can regloss the splatters after I purity seal the model.

@Tanith - Yup. He's planning ahead in case he gets hungry while slaughtering thin-bloods.

@Wicced - Glad to hear I've put that off for at least awhile yet. Good luck finding another victim. Just remember, the best (nightlordiest) murder-duels are the ones where only one them knows its happening happy.png

@nhaunter - Thanks for the praise. I was just checking out your badass nightlords a bit ago. Always glad to have another brother in midnight clad! Also, thanks for taking my plog over 100 posts.

This is yet another topic that I singularly failed to notice until recently! blink.png

A lot of really nice stuff here happy.png If I had the time and money, I'd seriously go for a small Night Lords war band.

Do you have a particular points size for this army?

Definitely like the axe. Looks like he's got a nonchalant "Put your head on this stone and die" look.

I think the only thing I'd say is the blue paint looks a bit splotchy. I don't know if that's intended, but on the helmet especially it really draws the eye in.

Alrighty, back with some issues resolved.

No more mold line!! I still haven't purity sealed him though, so he remains a tad glossy (fabuloussweat.gif)

"Crogan, bring me that one's spine."

"Your will, my claws, Praetor."

Race you for it!

And some replies!

@Forte - Tell me about it. Its really hard to demonstrate a squat or glute bridge to a client when yours are screaming. And I'm all about some puns. Thanks again for the help!

@DeathSpecter- Thanks! I feel like I'm actually, slowly, getting better. The axe is a pretty easy find. The top half is from a marauder horseman box, the haft is just the bottom of the original model's thunderhammer.

@Heathens - More than Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Imperial Fists or Dark Angels, mold lines are the nemesis of the 28th company.

@Heinrich - Thanks, for both the commentary and the assistance! I always loved the extra little bit of fluff A D-B tossed in the trilogy about Nostraman hillfolk and various fauna of the world. Plus I had it lying around. I do like how it turned out.

@Kol - I know what you mean. I tried to touch it up a bit before I put these new pics up. Does it look any better? I think its a mix of issues between my overenthusiastic highlighting and not having the mix down 100% for Vallejo paints. Or maybe Citadel paints and washes rebel when you use them to top coat a layer of Vallejo. I wouldn't put it past them....

@Aquianus - Glad to hear you happened down our midnight clad street! I do not have a set points force for these guys. I've been collecting Chaos marines since 2004 or so, and I have about 6500pts stockpiled with another 2000 or so in actual FW Pre-heresy stuff. I tend to switch them both between 40k Chaos marines and pre-heresy legion depending on which army list I'm feeling that day (or depending on which book I remembered to bring).

How go the Rainbow Warriors? Haha, and I thought Nightlords were kinda niche happy.png

It sounds like your Night Lords are your long term/"game life" project (same as my RW's) happy.png They're on a little sabbatical so that I don't get bored of them and to get the backlog of other projects started smile.png

Because of a certain number of members on this Forum, the Night Lords have piqued my interest a lot lately. I'll always be Black Legion (back when the Realm of Chaos books had them as the cowards and first to break the Heresy and run), but I'll get around to doing at least one NL model, even if it's a showcase one smile.png

Looking forward to your stuff in future! happy.png

Was originally the White Dwarf Index Astartes articles which got me onto Night Lord's and Emperors Children but the rules never felt right to show them off. Until FW with their Horus Heresy stuff.

Hi again folks!

We're back with another new member to the command squad. This time a librarian, apropos for the Nightlords, a divination librarian. I hope to eventually build a dedicated libby for each of the psychic disciplines, as well as a second for divination (as I tend to use two in my legion lists).

"Oh, without a doubt, I am my father's son. Eventually my gift will drive me mad, or tear my mind apart. I'll be going to meet my father the same way he left us; mad, ravening and a danger to everyone who ever relied on him. But the upside? I've seen you meeting your father long before I will mine..."

~ Kalyon Vor'sha the "Kragwraith," 28th Company Librarius Divinitatus, to Mun'noki Jhaghan of the White Scars

http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PB070001_zps8f3a3049.jpg

I decided to try a slightly different highlighting/shading scheme for him. All in all I'm not 100% with it. I think I'll be going back to my original scheme after this but I don't hate it enough to repaint him. It'll do well to set him apart from the others in the command squad. Especially since I'm *not* painting him ultrasmurfs blue pinch.gif

http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PB070002_zpsa718c2c8.jpg

Same thing with the little fur pelt at his waist. I tried some greenstuff fur, and while I don't hate it, I think I'll stick to off the sprue from now on.

I'm all about different colored helmets to distinguish specialists. Doubly so because I already have a topknot on almost everyone... sweat.gif

http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PB070003_zpscacff837.jpg

My first shot at a red power weapon. Still getting the hang of it, but I'm content so far.

http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PB070004_zps1a4a72d4.jpg

Gotta find room for the staff of office somewhere! Also, pelty

http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PB070005_zps98520ff5.jpg

And double stacks! Also lightning to avoid a wicced fate... cool.png

And for my fav part, Replies!

@Forte - Yup, same here. I still have an original copy of Index Astartes II that I got for $7.50 from my FLGS when I was 15ish. Have you checked the Ebay prices of those lately? happy.png

@Aquilanus - Most definitely a lifetime project. Glad you ended up checking out some of our Nightlord threads. There are half a dozen other amazing ones for both 30k and 40k which are hella inspiration for me.

I'm a Black Legion fan as well. Especially after Abbadon showed up in the Nightlords trilogy. What do you think of the shift they've undergone in recent fluff? They have this massive "grinding military machine" sort of deal since the codex expansion. A secret between you and I... I'll actually run my Nightlords using the rules for Black Legion when I play 40k. Everyone has VotLW and some bada$$ special wargear. Sign me up!

@Kol - Thanks! It's a bit of a mystery still...

@Deathspecter - Sure thing, and good timing on your part. Thanks for the kudos. I like making tiny (often amusing) stories with my minis laugh.png

damn, you're churning out new guys like an assembly line

not sure about the newest one though. i think he looks too much like a loyalist despite the shoulder pads and the backpack.

Also the staff  looks to big to be carried on his back.

but thats just my two flayed skulls

ps: lightning yay :tu:

Morning Guys!

No new paint for today I'm afraid. A long day of work awaits. Should have a free bit tomorrow though.

@ Forte - I could be mean and mention how old I was when those came out... tongue.png Admittedly that would just be because I'm *hella* jealous

@ Deathspecter - Thanks! I needed something to make them stand out, and I think the red does pretty well with the super dark blue. Even if it is a traditionally Ultramarine based designation...

@ Wicced - I try! I've been known to have bouts of imagination. I blame my recent round of Nightlords love on being hella bored with painting light colors after finishing 1500pts of bone shaded dark eldar. Also, I just found out that Netflix has 8 seasons of Supernatural...

I know what you mean about the loyalist thing though. My Nightlords are supposed to straddle the line between pre/post heresy. Mostly so I can use them for either in game, and so I have a few more options when it comes to conversions. I don't want them to deviate *too* far from the pre-heresy look (thus the lack of flayed Astartes faces and whatnot) but still have a kinda brutal thing going.

@ Kol - I agree! See above. I like your interpretation. Much more flattering that the g/f's idea of "space Gandalf." dry.png

Have you seen Caldaron or Brother-Chaplain Kage's stuff? I will be happy with a bronze medal compared to those two.

Even so, thanks! happy.png

I also just realized that 3 of my four characters have topknots. GAH! I have an addiction...

Morning folks!

Something a little different for today. Back when I took a little Nightlords hiatus and got into some dark eldar, I set myself a goal. I wanted to be able to turn out individual kabalite warriors at less than 60 minutes per mini. I'd let myself go a bit over on characters and squad leaders, but RnF normal troops, I wanted to actually have a decent time painting what I like to call Tabletop+ quality (just that little bit better than straight tabletop). So, I wanted to see how that same experiment could be translated to the 28th Company so that I may eventually end up with an entire painted pre/post heresy force. Below is the results of 62min of Nightlord, from basecoat to legion badge.

Well, it is a Pre-Heresy/Heresy Era Night Lord. It'd be weird if they looked like Chaos Marines.

i should've phrased it different. the grey knight parts are what throws me off. sure they're pre heresy/heresy NLs, but the grey knight parts look too decorated for my liking. i don't think even a librarian of the VIIIth would use engraved scripture on his armor. Just my personal opinion.

it's probably just the lack of grisly trophies that's irritating medevil.gif
