So commences Ovidius' Flesh Tearers army: update 5/12

Recommended Posts

After mostly lurking, it's time to finally post something of my own.  Only played a single game of 40k with a borrowed army, but I'm beginning a Flesh Tearers army.  I'm starting to develop the fluff (and will be posting in the BA area as well as desperately seeking help to develop the list), but the concept is the FT force in the era immediately following the Heresy and the sundering of the Legions.  The army is led by Amit and consists of an often uneasy conglomeration of true Flesh Tearers (i.e. those survivors of the Heresy from Amit's company from the Legion or those with a penchant for the thirst) and BAs who were selected--often reluctantly--to bolster the ranks of the new chapter.  The army will have some vets who served alongside Sanguinius himself and survived Signus, but also with an admixture of newer recruits.

Wargear is largely going to be FW as I am able to acquire it and GW Marines, trying to go with nothing newer than MkVI where possible.  I've currently got a Mk III despoiler squad and a Mk IV and V assault squad as well as a Contemptor and a handful of Mk VI suits.  Not sure how I'll run the army, but there will be DC, for which I'm going to use the Mk III.  I've also got a Mk III and IV power weapon upgrade set as well as some SoH torsos and heads that I think look pretty sweet.

This army will have access to Legion vehicles, but they're going to be beat up and battle scarred.  I'm picking up a Deimos Predator Executioner and hopefully a Storm Eagle.  I'll be using mostly Mk IV and V armor, but any Mk II or III armor will probably go into the Death Company (why give the remaining good suits to your nutbars??).  Also going to get some SoH Reavers (and a SoH command unit) since they're so awesome and convert them, probably for the DC.  It'll be unavoidable (for $$$ reasons) that Mk VII will find its way into the army, but it will be just as beat as the Heresy-era armor.  They've got the gear and the numbers, unlike 40k era FTs, but it's already falling into disrepair or giving out due to attrition because of the pace of battle (when you're scouring the galaxy of heretical scum, one doesn't have all that time!).

I've got some ideas for conversions and ways to get some real rippy-teary flair into the army, but here is my first tester (and the first mini I've ever fully completed, save a DC Razorback asscan conversion I never really finished).  I'm relatively pleased with how it came out.  Photos are not always the best, so apologies there.  I was in a rush just to get a tester actually painted (I've got others modeled up), so I didn't do much in the way of biggerizing (just blew the waist up 1.5mm) and I didn't make a base, which I'll get around to soon.  All the other marines are going to be more bigger and more dynamic and individual (read BLOODY).

Introducing a random brother sergeant from 4 Company (GW body, FW fist, SoH head and Mk IV arm and bolt pistol):

Note that the FT symbol on the pauldron isn't complete.  I printed some decals on Testors paper, put one in water and the ink went poof!  Didn't know I needed to put the setting spray on it, so it'll have to wait til the weekend until I can take care of that.

I think this last shot is much more indicative of the red scheme.  It's pretty much what I was going for, although I may want to up the violet or crimson and go even darker with more washes.  Mini hasn't been varnished yet, either.

Freehand on the company mark isn't the greatest.

Comments and criticisms more than welcome, since this is more or less a first!  More to come sooner, rather than later, I hope

There is an excellent stage by stage painting guide for Flesh Tearers on a site called From The Warp. Just Google Flesh Tearers and click on the first link to From The Warp. To convert the paint names from old to new just check out the Games Workshop conversion chart on their website in the painting section. I found this guide amazingly useful and easy to copy, hope this helps.

Thanks, brothers.

Next up for paint is this fellow:

And also this guy.  I could use some feedback with his pose and armaments.  Obviously he'll be vaulting the jersey barrier, but what should I arm him with?  I think I may make him part of the DC, but I'm not sure.  I've got a full complement of Mk III and IV power weapons from FW as well as chain axes and Tigrus and Phobos bolters.

Two-handed chainsword?  Chain axe?  Power axe?  Chainsword and bolt pistol?  Maybe run him as a tactical squaddie with a bolter and chain bayonet outstretched in front of him?  What do you think?

  • 5 months later...

Finally back and with the first of my Death Company.

Did some experimenting with new techniques like sculpting GS flames and painting them.  The fellow with the hand flamer still needs blood, damage on the chainsword and pigments, but he's otherwise done.

There are 3 more on the way shortly.

Comments welcome.  Thanks for looking.
