Acebaur
I like the cross on the back as well. It looks great! Also the vindy blade in indeed awesome. I smell another tutorial coming ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286601-the-nemesis-crusade-oath-complete/page/7/#findComment-3730481 Share on other sites
HLVW
Quick Update: I will say we are about 90% done with the Spartan now. Still have to do another dry brush on the tracks, add the gold to the Aquila's, finish off the crusade badge and add one more cross to the front ramp. This was my first attempt at using pigments and I kind of like them. Question though, if they have been mixed with water and then applied do you need to varnish it so that it will hold or is it good without for now?So here are the progress pics thus far.http://i.imgur.com/EBCzFxe.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/6y5wLDn.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/aIBGlZn.jpg?1Hopping to have this bad boy done by tomorrow night as I now have company in the house.@Ace - personally I am really happy with the way the blade for the vindi turned out. I can do a tutorial if you or others would like, (mind you that may give me a reason to tell my wife I need another one) here's hoping. Marshal Mattias
Looking awesome! Very gnarly. Looking forward to seeing those finishing touches! There's only one thing better than a Vindicator, and that's Another Vindicator. Although I suppose that the only thing better than Another Vindicator is Yet Another Vindicator, which means there's more than one thing better than simply a Vindicator. Hmmm. The only thing better than a Vindicator is the infinite possibility of adding another Vindicator to the ever-increasing total number of Vindicators. .. And Land Raiders. And Spartans. ... Dang, I'm gonna have to go sit down. Good work! Honda
Wow, that Spartan is looking super! The additional areas (lascannon) has really pulled away from the black and given you lots of interesting things for the eye to look at. Well done. Powders: I like using these a lot as well. However... 1. They will not hold as is. You will need to fix them to the model. There are a number of ways to do this, the cheapest being a light spritz of hair spray*. Do this before you seal your model. 2. Let the hairspray dry. 3. When you are ready, then go ahead and seal your model the way you normally do. Note: Sealers, for some reason, diffuse the powder effect quite significantly. I'm not sure why that is, but it is a really annoying fact. Pre-sealing with hair spray will alleviate most of that. After ETL we can talk more on different techniques with powders. * It always cracks me up when I need to go buy a bottle of hair spray. I have a Bruce Willis haircut (i.e. bald). So when I get to the counter to pay, I always get a look. I just smile and say, "I'm an artist". They have no idea what that really means, but it does seem to ease their worried minds. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286601-the-nemesis-crusade-oath-complete/page/7/#findComment-3732531 Share on other sites
HLVW
Thanks for the points Honda, one last question, is there any chance that the hairspray will make it go cloudy like certain sealers potentially can? Thanks Mattias, more vindis are always a safe bet. Cover the table in interlocking pie plates of destruction. Honda
Short answer: It shouldn't and I have never experienced that. Having said that, always, always, always test something else first. I will often spray flat black on paper card and use that as a test when weather conditions are suspect. In most cases, I think the fogginess comes from captured moisture as part of the sealing process. So always test first, but I've not ever seen the hairspray cause fogging. Krikey
I'm in agreement with the others. The red cross is very striking -- I quite like it already, and it will only be better when more color is added to the tank. Very nice! Edit: and actually .. You may not even need more color to balance it. Edit 2: Right -- I somehow became confused and missed the last page and then went back and looked and anyway, my first comment above was for the original spartan post -- not the update. The spartan looks amazing! I'm glad you didn't change the cross. ~K Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286601-the-nemesis-crusade-oath-complete/page/7/#findComment-3733868 Share on other sites
HLVW
Brothers of the Eternal Crusade, I am pleased to announce that my 4th vow is now complete.http://i.imgur.com/EDRNY3i.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/rm9BWZI.jpg?1@Krikey - Thanks for the comment. Kept it all as everyone suggested and added some more, I'm happy with the outcome either way. Here are some more pictures of the Spartan and Sicaran. (Still no name for the Spartan yet)http://i.imgur.com/JOovm0G.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/FijaEho.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/uEdl2ye.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/ebO25i6.jpg?1So in the end I am happy that this vow is now finished, however there is a small problem. I am out of things to paint, Nothing left, nada. Not complaining in the slightest however since I exceeded my own goal by about 1000pts and now have a fully painted BT army. Perchance I will find or acquire something quickly enough to accomplish all 5 Vows. Andhil
Absolutely stunning work, Brother. Honda
Brilliant work and the additional cross on the front of your Spartan is a nice touch. At some point, it would be nice to see a step by step on how you did your weathering. It's one of the best applications of worn paint that I've seen and liked. Your Sicarius is just wicked looking. At this stage, if you do go for a 5th vow, consider something small, perhaps a Marshal or a scratch built Cypher if you haven't done one already. Anyway, a simple vow might be a nice way to cap your efforts off. You have brought great honor to your chapter. Well done Brother. HLVW
Thank you for the kind words brothers. I am going to try and make a trip into Winnipeg this week, and look at getting a MOTF, mainly because I've seen so many done now and it has made me want to get one. Ummm once I find a model to paint I will toss up a quick tutorial on how I weather my armour, now I just need to go and get some more stuff. Firepower
Hm. Even with my absence, it's shameful that I haven't yet commented on this thread. You have a great deal of talent. A lot of the stuff in this blog is truly envious caliber work. That being said, there are some things that irk me. On your tanks, the damage-blobs are rather large at times, and with the outline-method, it ends up looking more like really weird lightning than actual damage. On that latest monstrosity of a tank, for instance, the patches are damage are so large that it looks like some form of bizarre camouflage more than actual chipping. Subtlety isn't easy, but it's worth the effort. Also, one trick I've learned from lots and lots of scouring the net, is to add the highlights only on one direction, i.e. only adding the edge highlight to the 'bottom' of the chips, rather than totally outlining them. But this technique in general is a nightmare on black, so those hints/tips/tricks may not apply so well. I love me some 'dirty white,' and you have that going in spades. Well done eye-glow always makes me giggle too, and your Terminators in particular look proper menacing with that icy red glare of theirs. Your greenstuff tabards come off looking rather thick. Unfortunately, a clumsy sculpt can really mess up a paintjob, too, and it shows on a few of the models. But, and this is an important 'but,' it's ambitious, and far from easy. While it needs improvement, I also expect improvement. You've clearly got enough talent to keep refining your skills. And of course, the Thunder Hammers are magnificent. I tried that technique a few times and I couldn't make it work. However, it isn't quite as effective on larger surfaces, like the Power Swords. The Champion/Marshal from Vow III makes me smile like an idiot. And cranking out work of this quality so quickly is also praiseworthy. That's all I got. Keep on Crusadin,' and I look forward to more Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286601-the-nemesis-crusade-oath-complete/page/7/#findComment-3753404 Share on other sites
HLVW
Many thanks for the feed back. @FP - Thanks for the CC and, I can now consider my crusade blessed, to tell you the truth on a lot of the issues you mentioned, I have had every intention of going back and touching certain things up. Primarily the larger lightniny (yeah its a word now) blochy battle damage effects. At the time I figured it was good enoughto call complete but they have been bothering me since then. I have a few more modles in the mail right now, so more sculpting practice will commence whenever they arrive, just not as quickly as I want to start working on my guard army again. Thanks again for the tips and I will definatly be trying to improve certain areas that have been bothering me to. @Greggles - Thanks mate, I just got my MOTF in the mail and will probably try and get him in as a fifth vow, I may be snaging some of the ideas you had for your MOTF on this guy. greggles
If he's a fine cast one, watch the extension arms in the back...they are crazy fragile! greggles
The one thing that drives me nuts about failcast, and resin in general...is it seems both sturdy and fragile at the same time. It always seems to be completely random how much effort it takes to snap a piece. I was working on helbrecht's sword...heating it up in water and bending it. Everything was fine, then snap.... Brother Talon
....impressive work you've got going there! I have to say that I,for one, truly love the weathering job on the tank. Reminds me of excessive heat and wear from dust storms when I was overseas... that combo literally strips the paint of vehicles, and armor is no exception! I can see how it may remind some of an 'off-brand camo scheme', let's face it: we've all seen some goofy camo. Still, it's an approach to weathering that is hard to pull off. If that was your aim, consider the shot having hit the bullseye. Great work man, keep it up! Firepower
Yick. I loathe delicate models like this. God forbid I ever touch that Finecast crap What I'm trying to say is, have fun Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286601-the-nemesis-crusade-oath-complete/page/7/#findComment-3754992 Share on other sites
HLVW
+++ Vow 5 Update +++ Worked throughout most of the night on the MOTF, and I would say he is about 80% finished. Still need to work on the highlights, the power axe, the tabard and some osl. Anyone have some recommendations as to whether or not to have the Axe activated or not, I am still trying to decide on that. If it is turned on, it will be the same Purple as my other power weapons.http://i.imgur.com/HM1ISp6.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/s45TCwP.jpg?1I think I need to diffuse the light a bit more since he doesn't look that grey when I am holding him.
