Vow 2 has now been finished, and also the Chaplin painting challenge thrown down by Acebaur.

Now unfortunately I have found one problem after finally assembling everything after painting, that with the Necron rifle there, I placed the Chaplin to far back on the base, and well he is rather heavy, so even with a washer glued in I will need to find something else other than sticky tac.
Hope you all like, and now I think I may get started on my Sigismund.

  • 4 months later...

So I wanted to try something slightly different with my entry for Chaos at the gates. I have seen quite a few peoples, myself included, techmarine models that are in the Templar black but have a base colour of red battle damage just to signify that they once had the red of a standard Techmarine. This being said, as the Emperors champion wears the armour of Sigismund. I wanted the battle damage effects to show the once golden yellow colours of the Imperial Fists. It also gave me the chance to use some new materials like the AK Interactive chipping effects seeing as painting yellow over black for battle damage would take me all year.

Here's what I have so far, just letting it totally dry before putting on the varnish then chipping stuff.

Also I would greatly appreciated ideas of which traitor chapter any of you would like to see painted on the base of this guy.

C&C always welcome

Well I'm going with word bearers as the nemesis faction to my black templars...

Partly because they aren't black... (I accidentally made all my armies black 11 years ago and am correcting that now. Only my templars wear the Emperor's black in my house)

Because they have a pretty cool color scheme.

They fight fluff wise differently enough from most marines in that they tend to push large numbers of cultists. variety is fun and cultists definitely provide variety in gaming, modeling and painting...

And I think occult stuff is fascinating...

Word bearers are a dark parallel to black templars.

- They both fight at legion like strength in 40k.

- They are both zealous fanatics.

- they both have emphasis on their chaplains/dark apostles.

Dark Angels would be a fun idea, but was thinking more along the line of more heretical. I do like the Word Bearers, that would be fun and I really haven't played with that colour tone much, or maybe the Death Guard for a nice contrast from the Black of the armour, some things to ponder over tonight. Thanks for the suggestions.

The shoulder pads are the originals from the kit, I just scraped off the nubs on the one side as I cant stand them and the Imperial Fists symbol and used some of the Templar etched brass crosses.

All of them.

I am very interested to see how this progresses. One of the things that is mentioned about Bayard (Emperor's Champion at Helsreach) is that his armor is ancient and that the battle damage shows gold/yellow underneath. That makes me wonder if it is Scouring Era armor or Sigismunds.

So please do play on. Intrigued I am. :)

Finally finished my oath, to be honest with you I am not as happy with him as I was hoping for. I have definitely learned what I can and cant do on a mini this size. Such as the AK heavy chipping stuff I will save soley for larger models as it is a little difficult to get into the smaller areas and not break things.
In the end I went with a Word Bearer Rhino which I am quite happy with, thanks to Kikkala's tutorial here on how to paint there armour, so if he/she is still around thanks.

Enough of me rambling here are some pics of the finished work.

<I would have commented earlier, but I've spent the last 5 minutes enthralled>

Very, very nice. I think you should be pretty happy with how he turned out.

Question: Now that you've played around with other techniques, do you think you would have rather used a sponge technique to get the chipping effect you were after?

Thanks Honda, on a model this size, yes I think I will go back to using a sponge and adding a extra step of putting a lighter colour down if I were to be using a candy colour like yellow over black again. I think the heavy chipping effect will work great on a larger vehicle, and am looking forward to trying that out soon.

Base coat of very thined scorched brown, dry brush of 50/50 scorched brown bone white, dry brush bone white, agrax earthshade, followed by bone white and then pure white for some of the higher areas. For the red again scorched brown, 50/50 scorched brown and mephiston red, pure mephiston red, a little nulin oil and then some pure evil sunz scarlet.
