4th Tarosian Regiment - Devildog

I've decided on a camo scheme similar to what the Saudi Air Force use, as it'll tie in with my existing scheme pretty well:

Currently I don't have any ideas for the Ramp Gunner as far as rules. He'll probably be an aesthetic touch more than anything. Thanks for letting me steal this idea, by the way!

Ah that camo scheme will work nicely and I loom forward to how it is done as I am debating how to paint my second valk.

As for the ramp gunner I was debating a 10 point upgrade no skyfire but can target independantly of the rest of the guns.

I like what you did though and you reminded me that I will have to paint the interior now too!

Thanks guys! Blitzed the Valkyrie a bit today and got a lot painted on it, (I've also developed the irritating habit of singing Flight of the Valkyries whenever I bring it onto the table. I'm sure the novelty will wear off soon!) Managed to get a game in today where it continued its record of being a bit crap, but the squad it carries being really damn awesome. It got one turn on the board, dropped the squad without scatter to end a Meganobz squad, then missed both its MRPs against a massive squad of Boyzand killed a single Boy with the Multilaser. It subsequently got Stunned and flew off the table, returning to find all its possible targets already dead the next turn after Pask Got Stuff Done. (Guy's my MVP in every list, there's nothing that Punisher doesn't...well...punish.)

Anyway, Valkyrie pics below. Still much left to do as usual, wanna try some weathering techniques from the Forge World Masterclass on it:

Nice valk. :)

The fw book is a great guide for weathering. It got me into using burnt umber oil paint.

I've been trying a few of the tips and tricks in it on the Valk. Got a bunch of Weathering Powders on order from Forge World, so I'm looking forward to putting those to use!

Spent a while touching up parts of the Valk and started on the crew. Not much worth posting in pictures, though!

Sounds good, keep up the good work Coffee! There's something about desert/yellow models that makes weathering look even better, I'm not sure why. Maybe it's more realistic for the realities of desert warfare or perhaps the colours work better with metallics?

I think it is because the lighter desert colours help the weathering to stand out whilst a dark colour can hide it.

On my devilfish, the underneath is light grey and the weathering looks great but the same effect on the uppersurface, which is dark green can hardly be seen.

Just thinking aloud ;)

Weathering is very addictive. Another tip I found in the Modelling Masterclass books was to get a pencil and scrape a fine powder of graphite from it, then use it for metallic weathering and for making metals seem dull and worn. It's a really interesting effect actually, and can be applied with your finger over areas of interest.

Managed to get 12 Guardsmen built, which is a pretty awkward number to be honest. Absolutely nothing special about these guys, just some Lasgun-toting meatshields who will make up the beginnings of my Platoon!

Yeah, that's a problem I've had trying to devise a weathering scheme I'm happy with on my tanks which are predominantly Catachan Green. It's something I've got on my list though once I've got a few projects out of the way :D

Sorry to hijack the op, but have you considered doing a faded green effect to weather on? Like a good old red/going pink effect on older cars?

No, but at the moment I'm open to all ideas. I'll start a topic on it when I've cleared my decks for this so I can sort out ideas and get help :) Things such as the pencil weathering for example would be good to share there.

You'll need a good number of lasgun troopers, they're what gives you the real numbers so unexciting yes but also essential! I'd recommend blasting through as many as you can so you don't have to worry about having enough when building lists.

If anyone starts up such a topic, let me know. I've been learning a lot from these Forge World books that I could share, some of the tips are very simple but extremely useful!

First off, an update on the Valk. It's tough to weather this realistically as the front is so flat that any sandstorm capable of wearing away the side paintwork would really strip the cockpit bare given how unaerodynamic it is. Here's a deluge of pics after I started trying out Weathering Powder.s Still so much to refine with hos I use them, but man are they an excellent aid for dirtying up armour. The Rust ones would be awesome on a vehicle more used to damp weather given how easily it is to "speckle" it realistically in ways Ryza Rust really can't manage. I think next I'm going to get some oil paints to help improve my palette a bit. Also, a neat tip I found was to use a HB pencil to highlight the edges of metallic areas. Quick, clean and easier to manage than a paintbrush, give it a shot some time!

With the Valk wrapping up - needing cockpit finished then more weathering - I'll be working through the big ol' pile of unpainted minis below. The ten-man Vesa'ui Veterans team I converted, as well as twenty-odd Guardsmen, a Standard Bearer, Russ Executioner and my Mistress of Ordnance/Mistress of the Fleet. A friend got into the Raging Heroes Kickstarter for their new Toughest Girls in the Galaxy line, and they got a bunch of Jailbirds for their Traitor Slaanesh army, which are like their femme Catachan equivalents. This girl sadly did not fit into the aesthetic, so I bought her as she looks suitably dynamic and is carrying a vague enough transmitter to cover either role as needed. (I can explain her unique armour design away as her being more involved with the Air Caste in orbit rather than the Fire Caste on the ground.)

Russ is lightly converted and loaded with bits to fill the role of an old, reliable workhorse. A few of these guys need another coat of Chaos Black as I was a bit lazy with it, then after that it'll be a case of sitting down and blitzing through them a squad at a time! I'll probably be posting my 2K list here soon on parade if I get it mostly painted by then!

The valkryie is coming along nicely. Another way to add to the weathering and one that I plan to do too is to think which colour would have been applied first then have some of that colour coming through the top layer..

Example: my leman Russ was originally green then had a rush desert scheme applied over it by the crew. As the lower quality paint is worn off then the green will start showing again. You can achieve this on your model using either the sponge or stipple brush techniques.

Valkyrie is looking good indeed. Picking up some tips for when I look at weathering both of mine.

Maybe something to consider is the stone chip effect on the underside.

And speaking from experience, if there were any fluid leak eg hyd or fuel etc then dust and dirt get attracted to them like flys to ......

As said though, looking great as it is.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. Would you believe this is the only site where people reply to my updates? It's nice getting friendly advice on my work, though people at the LGS have been very complimentary of my Valkyrie and I've even had a couple of people ask for a sit down tutorial on how I did some of the effects. Suffice to say those made my day! happy.png

The weathering is something I'm trying to find the right level of. Sadly looking into IRL aircraft doesn't help much, as back in the 40s or so we discovered aerodynamicism, and left the 40K Imperial design team behind. Thus it's hard to find a flat-fronted aircraft that would also be deployed in desert storm weather and suffer a lot of sand-borne paint attrition! Dammit GW, why can't you make beautiful sleek aircraft like the Tau Sunsha - bahahahahahahhah.

@El'mo

I like the idea of the paint scheme wearing through. Hmmm, the problem is that the vehicles involved, even if they were stolen from the invading Imperials, would still sport desert schemes. It'd be a bit of a stretch to have yet another camo scheme underneath, but it's an effect I'll keep in mind for the ol' Russ above and try out.

@Scatmandoo

I'll have to look into the stone chip effect and some tutorials on it. I can envision the sort of thing you're referring to, as our local council loves paving roads in gravelly tarmac that chips the hell out of cars driving over it. Cheap though...

@Juan

I did my best at the least! Still have enough parts to do another ten Guardsmen with lasguns if I can source a pile of legs. I have a friend who's a bitz dealer - which would sound pretty shady if my parents overheard that - and I can probably get those via him and roll up yet another squad! As it stands I'm writing a list that'll involve plenty of boots on the ground, some air support and most importantly, a hunk of armoured support!

I'll try and keep everyone posted on my progress. Hoping to finish the Valk this weekend, then crack on with factory painting the lasgun grunts.

I will be looking at bringing my valkryie up to my desert scheme over the next couple of weeks so I am interested in how you end up doing yours.

I will be doing the underside exactly the same as my Barracuda including blending it into the upper camouflage and adding the desert sponging to the green.

We'll have none of that Xeno filth round here, Sir! Oh no, no, no!

I had thought myself done on tanks now. With 4 Russes I have most bases covered. I thought so until one of the managers at my LGS pulled out his box of old Forge World Krieg models to sell to another guy, until I saw the only model not being traded as part of said sale...

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20140814_22_14_19_Pro.jpg

I really hate it when pretty tanks make me impulse buy them. I don't even run Vanquishers.

Well said Coffee, we shoot those dirty xenos on sight round here and we've just had the floors cleaned so I wouldn't want to make a mess :P

Did you get it nice and cheap? I was struggling to catch the rest of your post though. All I could see was "Pask Vanquisher", whatever that means... ;)
