JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue."

Recommended Posts

well, that's one more birthday in the books...

here's to many more years of getting paid to paint toy soldiers, and sending silly photos to my clients so they can see how their heroic minis will be posed...

this is a Deathwatch Space Marine, armed with a power axe and storm shield, or a spatula and cutting board, depending upon what the Game Master decides to throw at him:)...

taking a break from Tiggi, i got some work done on Sgt. Chronus...

he is being painted in the same scheme as the majority of the vehicles in this Ultramarines army...

quick and dirty...

@Quixus: it would have been a perfect 2nd edition Wargear card;)...

@LutherMax: thanks, mate...

this is the last WIP for Tiggi, since he needs to be done tonight...

one more layer of yellow to go, and then just a few fine details to finish up...

here's his base, and the other two for Chronus and Cassius...

Chronus, himself, is coming along...

i'll get some better quality pics for the finished guys, but i am in way too much pain to take good photos today...

typical, on a night when i can't just take the evening off:(...

time to power through, and finish this Libby...

thanks for looking...

thanks, guys...

i tried to make Tiggy as cool as i could, given the short amount of time that i had to work on him...

a smooth yellow takes quite a few layers to get right...

@Rojo: a mini never really comes together until the last few brush strokes...

i don't really work to a plan, and just do a bit of sketching on the model, letting the ideas either work, or not...

for the few step-by-steps i have done, i really had to change up my painting style to follow set steps...

normally, i just work on whatever bit i fancy, at that moment...

i finished up the standing version of Sgt. Chronus...

i like this guy's funky armor, helmet, and backpack...

using the weathering style i applied to the vehicles made this guy pretty quick to paint up...

now i just need to finish up the tank commander version...

  • 2 weeks later...

Wow Chronus looks absolutely amazing.

You also didi a great job with Tigurius. Its not a great model to be sure, but you did it justice. I also really like the yellow. The only thing is considering the wear and verdigris across the armour etc, the robes look really clean.. I would have thought they would have been a bit manky and weather worn like the armour, however they do give a really nice contrast to the weatherbeaten sections.

Besides that stellar work!!

@dantay_xv: i hear you...

i thought about dirtying up the robes...

in the end, i figured the clean robes would stand out on the tabletop a little more, and look nice on my client's shelf...

here is the tank commander version of Sgt. Chronus...

this is the ugly stage, after the first rust wash...

i didn't get any other WIP pics after these, so i'll show off the finished one tomorrow...

thanks, LutherMax...

here is the finished tank commander version of Ultramarines Sergeant Chronus...

since he makes your tank shoot better, i guess this is a pretty important half of a mini...

i had fun painting the buzzcut, the auspex return, and the open tank hatches...

i like thelook of the lighter interior color, which should contrast nicely against the dark colors of the tanks...

Looks great.

My guess for the buzz cut would be usie the hair colour you want but mix it in with the flesh tone you are using so it loos mre natural than just the hair colour alone.

Either that or very thin glazes to allow flesh colour to peak through?

Where does "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue" come from? And/or what does it mean?

40 year old virgin.  he says it while painting a civil war miniature. he was painting an old pewter one. hence the silver.

a genius reference actually.

thanks for all the replies, guys...

the buzzcut was painted with some very thin glazes, instead of mixing in with the skintone (which is how i did it the first time i tried it on The Butcher from Warmachine)...

this time i wanted to see if i could skip the mix, and still have it look ok...

i used a very light grey (either P3 Ironhull Grey or P3 Trollblood Highlight, i can't remember which), because i wanted to look like he had gone grey...

@sheep: rule of cool, mate;)...

he would be a centimeter shorter if i put the legs inside, and obscure some of the cool detail...

hopefully the black color hides any awkwardness...

i think he will look cooler on top of a tank, being just that little bit taller...

@LutherMax: Bloodbath called it...

it is a 5-second reference in the movie that made me laugh, in a quick montage of him doing all his hobbies one Friday night, instead of going out...

here is the next mini on the chopping block, literally...

i never did like the stock head that was sculpted on Chaplain Cassuis...

it looked too much like a zombie...

i have always wanted an excuse to use the half-bionic head from the Devastator squad box, and i finally got it here...

the art has him depicted with a cool mohawk, so i also got my chance to try my hand at sculpting one...

it is a little big, which seems to be a common problem with first time sculpts, but i like it well enough to keep it...

it looks like a a Terminator/B.A. Baracus mash-up:)...
