JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue."

Recommended Posts

thanks, guys:)...

@LutherMax: all of the parts are right in front of me, so i can put them together in my head while i am working...

it is just nicer, for me, to be able to reach all the deep spots without trying to paint around assembled parts...

i seem to have lost a bunch of WIP pics of the Dreadknight while i was getting my laptop to cooperate again, but here is a few more...

i really like the shield on this guy's shoulder, with the Grey Knights Marine fighting a Demon of Chaos...

the torso was the section that had the most bright metal...

as usual, all paints are P3...

the bright metals are a basecoat of Pig Iron, washed heavily with Armor Wash, then a layer of Cold Steel, and a wash of Blue Ink...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/DKChasis_zpszzsdjooj.jpg

i wanted to differentiate the GK bases a bit from the Ultramarines, so even though i am using the same basing elements, i went with rusty metals and darker soil...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/DKBase1_zpsqp2lgrrd.jpg

the legs have a darker metal on the struts...

this is done with a Pig Iron basecoat, and then a wash that is a 1-1 mix of Armor Wash and Thamar Black...

last, but not least, what can only be described as big arse sword!!!

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/DKSword_zpsofhqz4tt.jpg

it was a real challenge to paint a glowing effect on this blade without an airbrush...

up next i'll have the finished pics, where you can see if i pulled it off, or not;)...

thanks for looking...

cheers

dear God, you just, get, better!

that dreadknight is the business. I would personally love to work with you on a project of mine. I'am planning on a heavily converted Black Templar Marshal. and I would like to see what you would be able to do!

in a perfect world.

thanks, Bloodbath...

i try to improve some aspect of my painting with each mini...

we can definitely work together...

i'll shoot you a PM...

keep in mind that my queue is always booked a couple of months in advance...

here are the last two pics i was able to salvage, the finished Dreadknight...

i have no idea why the front view is so skewed, but it is better than nothing...

i have never painted so much metal on a single mini...

sadly, this was a two week, budget rush-job...

i feel like i could have done so much more with the contrast and details...

i did enjoy the challenge of painting the fades on the big sword, even though it would have been much easier with an airbrush, and picking out the awesome relief on the tilt shield...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/DKBack_zpslrnrpxux.jpg

i would love to revisit this model, and actually do some conversion work to salvage the poor design of the pilot...

now that i have worked with the kit, i have a few ideas of what i could do with it...

with just a little bit of extra work, this could be an incredible model...

thanks for looking...

i hope you like him...

cheers

Hand painted stuff always looks better than airbrushed, especially up close.  Nice rendition of this otherwise hideous model- I agree it needs redoing completely as the pilot position looks like an afterthought or a poor attempt to make a GK version of the power loader from Aliens.  Personally, this thing always reminded me of The Hangover, with Zack Galifianakis' character toting around the baby.

thanks, guys:)...

@Rojo: if you look back on the step-by-step for the Sanguinary Priest's sword, you will see that my layers are very thick and heavy, right up to the Arcane Blue/Morrow White mix, then i cheat the blends with some thinned paint, and finish off with a 6-1 white/blue mix...

nothing too fancy, but a lot of cheating for a quick tabletop piece;)...

still catching up on the last few months of work...

since my second plastic version of Dante (using the Sanguinary Guard) was finished a while ago, i should probably finish up his step-by-step...

when i left off, he was at the shading wash stage...

to recap, i had built up the base color, starting with a basecoat of P3 Battlefield Brown, then a layer of BB and Rhulic Gold at a 1-1 ratio, then a layer of 1-1 Rhulic and P3 Solid Gold, then the shade wash of 1-1 P3 Sanguine Base and P3 Flesh Wash...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Dantebody10_zps385ccc2a.jpg

to start building up the shadows and highlights i came back in with the 1-1 mix of Rhulic and Solid Gold...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Dantebody12_zpsmbc3jhvw.jpg

next was a layer of Rhulic Gold and Vallejo Air Metals Gold at a 3-1 ratio, since the VAM Gold is such a strong color...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Dantebody13_zpsmamcnawo.jpg

to finish the highlights, i used a 3-1 mix of VAM Gold and VAM Aluminium...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Dantehead9_zps5t7uzhft.jpg

that's it, my basic standard gold technique...

i hope this is helpful...

thanks for looking...

Thanks for finishing the tute.

You know man, yours is the only thread I read all the way through like 3+ times a week. And since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, your painting method is what I think I'm going to roll with. Because I like comics art as well, and with my recovering crushed hands, it might be the way to go for me. I can't paint the way I used to. So with permission, I am going to paint the Jah-Joshua way.if I can.

no worries, Bloodbath...

i am always happy to hear that the step-by-steps are helpful...

so sorry to hear about your hands getting crushed...

good to hear they are getting better...

i bet there is a hell of a war story behind that injury...

here is the final result...

having a second crack at this version of Dante was a nice opportunity to address a few things i thought i could improve over the first version...

i tried to improve the glow on the axe, and added texture to the feathers...

switching to the 32mm base, instead of 25mm, was nice...

the slightly bigger base makes all the difference for the balance of these dynamic jump pack Marines...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/forum%20pics/Dante3_zpst1zzj4tb.jpg

now i just need to do one more version, using the Death Company parts, in conjunction with the Sanguinary Guard parts, to really play up the original style of the sculpt with the DC jump pack, and the inferno pistol in the hand, rather than wrist mounted one...

gotta respect the classics!!!

thanks for looking...

i hope you like him...

good question, Bloodbath...

since i've never painted a Lamenter, or any yellow Marine (though i want to), it would be a huge experiment to paint...

i use P3 paint and a layering technique, so i would start with Battlefield Brown, Gun Corps Brown, Heartfire, Cygnus Yellow, and Morrow White...

i would have to figure out how to use some Bloodstone for shading, as it is a really nice red brown which would look much richer, and more interesting than a neutral brown like G. C. B. would...

i have painted a Lamenter shoulder pad for a Deathwatch squad, and i can tell you that those checks are maddening to paint on a curved surface!!!

i got the chance to re-base the Sanguinary Priest with the newer 32mm bases...

this guy was tipping over onto his face all the time, which is not good for a mini that a customer paid a lot of money for:(...

he's all better now, and not so tipsy;)...

i really like the look of Marines on this base size...

no more overhanging toes, and a little more room to make some cool scenics...

thanks for looking...

i hope you like him...

thanks guys...

i am still getting caught up on the last couple of months work after i slacked on posting for a bit...

last month was a Legion of the Damned Squad for my client's dirty Strike Force Cassius Ultramarines army, a painting style that works perfectly to hide all of Finecast's flaws...

the warping in Finecast is ridiculous...

there was no saving this sword, as it was warped in three different directions:(...

i replaced it with a lovely crisp plastic one from the Tactical Squad box, and gave him a combi-flamer from the same box...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/weapons_zps9eijmmn2.jpg

ironically, after i just posted about how much i like the new 32mm bases, i am back to the dinky 25mm ones...

the three toppers are from one of the 40K basing kits, one base got a bit from the Grey Knights heavy psilencer, and there is a plain one for a little variety...

they are painted to match the Ultramarines bases from the previous commissions...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Bases_zps6qpbbohj.jpg

here is the early basecoat and wash stage, on one of the bolter Marines...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/BolterWIP_zps0bsgttmp.jpg

the flamer Marine is at the "nearly there" stage...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/FlamerWIP_zpshsiijaco.jpg

the heavy flamer is at the "can i have my arms now?" stage:)...

thanks for looking...

i hope you like them...

thanks, guys...

here is the first mini from the LotD squad...

even though this is just a basic standard commission, i had to throw in a little OSL around the eyes to give these guys a ghostly creepiness...

the green power sword was a nice chance to try out something other than blue for my power weapons, and goes nicely with the eyes...

I've got a nearly complete run of these LotD models kicking around someplace, but I had zero ideas on what to do with them.  Keep posting away, and maybe I'll get mine out of the box and do something with them!
