really considering getting the betrayers at calth Dread for the WUlfen dread. 

 

How similar in size is that dreads head to the wulfen dread head?

Hi Triszin, 

 

With your conversion chopping up the B@C dread should be an easy job for you.

Unfortunately the last dread I worked on was about 6 years ago, when FW did the venerable Space Wolves dread nought.

 

Best I can do is a side by side shot, from Argyles post with a FW contemptor dreadnaught. I hope this helps.

Hi Vykryl. The dust-buster has been sent back to the forges and remade.

Actually the Umbra ferrox is a pig to work with compared to the Tigris bolters, as there is very little of them.

They are very hodge podge just now.

 

Super glue was like water, plus I am not over keen on the umbra ferrox, bol-guns. They are not as forgiving as the bulkier seeker type

The sniper rifle, did belong to EdT, I won it in an ebay lot he was selling off. I loved it, but I am not going to take credit for it.

While  I like the look of this model overall. It is very sloppily done and will end up being dismantled thenrebuilt. I also feel it doesn't quite fit the theme of the unit, so maybe a re-jig is needed?

Barrel is an axe handle, quite like the strapping, as it looks like he is trying to camouflage the weapon :)

And yes I will drill out the barrels!!

The original barrel will be cut away and the extended piece refitted. Like I said this was just a fast, sloppy fit job.

Well I am back again.

 

I am still struggling to find my painting muse & this chest infection plus flu has been kicking my behind these past few weeks.

 

Anyways I managed to get the design free-handed on th eother side of the Spartan

I also tried lazy painting of the quad las-cannons. Basically just drybrushed greys over the black, then washed with blood letter. Came out quite pink, so not too happy. I migh tgive it another glaze, or I migh make Khorne red into a glaze and see if a darker red might work. Failing that I'll try a little drakenhof nighshade to darken it down suitably.

What should I do with the sides to give it a more Space Wolf vibe. At the oment with nothing typically wolfy, it feels a bit bland to me... Any ideas?

 

Lastly did the shade transitions on the lights and lenses, ready for washes and varnishing :)

This is called a Ginfaxi, and it is meant to bestow strength in battle or courage in combat to its bearer.

As she is to be the old dame of the legion and I wanted to go with runes and freehand which is markedly different from the usual stuff I do, I thought the ginfaxi would be appropriate.

 

If the front ramp had been flat I would have put it there, in fact I could make a 40mm base into a shield and do that, at the moment it is 25mm.

 

Also what about the colours. I wanted to jkeep it fairly neutral so as not to overwhelm the tank, but I am not sure if I have made the right choice, should I have been bolder and gone for a yellow/black combo, like the Wolf Guard, or a black and white like the long fangs?

 

Therein lies a problem because we have no ideas as to what colours or pack markings etc the 6th legion use in 30K.

Good choice of emblem :D A darker red may look better, it looks pinkish on my phone. Maybe have the shield same color as the tank? Not into the white background. Knot work looms good

 

Good to see you active again. I'm slowly plugging away at my guys, looking for blades that fit with the Dwarven weapons. Not much luck so far :(

These are the actual shield designs that I painted up. They are a lot darker in real life, so maybe the scanner and printer are lightening them a bit?

Also on the grey shield, I thnk the red has gone slightly pink because I added in someblazing orange to the highlights... I might go back and re-do te red and leave that stage out.

Yes, I really should learn about adjusting colours on these newfangled computer-ma-bobs 

 

Not too much to report over the lunch break, got the lenses glossed. Did some more red glazes to the quad lascannons & still trying to decide on the shields.

The grey shields look pinkish, because, I used some blazing orange in the highlight, which may or may not have have confused the printer a little

Your painted sheets look good, must be the scanner/printer making them a couple shades lighter. Just noticed you slipped the gold and red shield in before I'd finished my last post, I'd have commented on it in this thread if I'd seen it :D

Did the stripe as Thorn had suggested. Do I paint the metal section which breaks up the white, with white?

 

Is the white too bright, would another colour look better? I considered black , but was worried it would be too dark.

 

I was thinking to either broaden the stripe, or add a second thinner stripe.

 

I also have another dilemna, I was thinking to do a numeral 6 and a Wolf head in the striped area, but I am not sure if it is do-able, with all the split panels... What do you think?

Not sure what I think of the stripe. If you keep it it should be solid, no little metal section. The whites not overly bright. What color of second strike? With the panels the head would need to be small not to be broken up. How would the plastic Landspeeder icons look? If the wolf head is correct style for yiu.

I agree that the metal should not break it up, I just wanted to see how jarring it would be. I think I did okay considering I didn't have any tape to mark the lines so I eyeballed it mostly. There is no pure white in the stripe, I used dawnstone, administratum grey and then a 50-50mix of admin grey and white., I didn't want it being too bright.

 

The second stripe would probably be the same colours, although I might put an edge on the lines using black, to sharpen them up.

 

If I didn't use white on the second stripe, what colour would you think to use?

 

Not going to use the land speeder icons, but what I will do is do a sketch of the icon, on paper and try it out at the back end. The wolf outline will be  deep red

They could do with some black for soot and maybe a touch more stippling to get some rust in the browns.

 

So what do you think to the semi-straight stripes?

I was thinking to do a simple design, like a wreath and a numeral 6, but not sure where to put it, or even if it will look messy because of the panels

 

Do I make a dragon head prow for the front of the spartan (either side of the front hatch) or will it be too comic-like and make the model look dumb?

The wolf heads look good and are placed well. I thought you were putting them on the stripes, looks good in that little sunken panel. The 2nd stripe looks curved with the way the panels are. Bit of an optic illusion there. Will the VI fit below the tab in the big stripe? Not sure where else it would fit. Doesn't look like there's room for designs around it though.

 

I'm not thinking clear enough to be much help right now. Looking forward to our trip over the mountain for Easter. 2 weeks after that I'm going down the coast for a long weekend getaway with my wife :D Time is not moving fast enough :( I'm reminiscing about when I lived in Fort Bragg and day dreaming about being alone with my wife and no schedule or other people to deal with for a few days :)

I had considered doing the wolfs head in the stripes, but considering how broken up the stripes are, it will be hard enough to place the numerals as it is.

The optical illusion is a bit weird, but it could be exacerbated by the camera lens going all fish-eyed.

So a slow night, made a few mistakes, but overall a little progress. Might put Geironul to one side soon and work to finish off Herja.

Needs cleaning up. I was going to add just a hint of yellow, by staining th grill inside the head with sepia, but I foolishly tried a little gold and it is bright yellow. Going to take it back to leadbelcher and sepia wash to make the yellowing more subtle.

While the prow design itself looks good, I'm not a fan of it on the tank.  Matter of personal preference, though.  Exhaust turned out nicely and the freehand knotwork is top notch as usual.

I got a better look at your notes last night. Unfortunately I came down with something and have been too muddled to think. Like the runes in gold and the wolf heads look good. Think I will echo the response in the wip subforum, leave it as is or just add your VI numerals and call it good. Save some ideas for the next vehicle to enter you paint shop ;)

 

The prow idea is neat but doesn't fit this vehicle. Needs to be on something sleeker. I'd have to look to think of something other than the Stormwolf

I hope you are not coming down with anything too serious. Thanks for the feedback, you are not the only one to say, tone down the ideas for the stripe.

 

I kind of agree that something without a pointed prow would maybe look daft, but it would not take too much to modify the Caestus to have 2 pointed prows and have 2 dragon heads. I do not have a stormwolf to try out the idea on, so it might be something for the future.

 

I did a rough mock up of how it might look on one side. Construction would be thin card, with details layered on with the thin card to give it a 3-D effect.

2 reasons for not running with it are:

 

It could get a bit big and look comical rather than cool.

Because the heads would be either side of hte hatch, it looks more like a funeral bier rather than a longship

I have ideas to convert up a caestus to have a longship prow, so I can mount a dragon head on it, I think it would be more suiting to that, or a Stormwolf.

 

In the meantime, I am going with RT era legion symbols for my Space Wolves.
