15 Shades of Grey, A new start.... with Primaris,

I like just the red, either solid or outline. Filling in the wolf head with yellow draws attention away from the knotwork on the side hatches. Looks good on top though.

I have decided to call time on Geironul. She needs some tidy up work. I need to strip the magnets from the quad lascannons and replace it with 3mm rod so the sponsons can swivel properly and not keep popping out. Could be due to the3mm magnets in the lascannons being affected by the 5mm magnets holding the sponsons on.

 

I also need to find, paint and fit the guards which go over the lascannons too.

 

The main reason for calling quits now, is tat I am getting too involved. I want to paint every panel and do something different in each area. It will become overlaod and rather than looking Fenryka, as I envision it, it'll look like Liberacce got hold of it. (ie as gaudy as an Emperors Children)

 

Geironul is supposed to have been with the the legion since before leaving Terra, and I wanted to do some old school markings, transitioning to the knotwork and runic symbols more associated with Fenris. I have a feeling that I am reaching a tipping point.

I think that is a proper amount of detail. I ran into the same problem building my Death Korps of Kreig army. But there is so much on even the basic infantry to detail out. I like the work you have done!

SO next up is trying to finish off Herja! I have so many partially done models, it seems unfair. I should give each one it's time & get them done.

 

I haven't done too much thus far.

Changed the weapons from black to reed to match Geironuls, the mechanicum cogs and a bit of tidying here and theere. Still tons to do.

I want to add 2 symbols to the top hatches. one will be the legion symbol, the other will be the vehicle marking. The white stripes, I would like to keep unique to Geironul, I have been using Grey Hunter markings for the other tanks. I may go back to this and also replicate the markings on the blacked out sections at the front of Herja.

Geironul and Herja, side by side. Herja is a new breed of wolf, brought into the legion in the latter days of the crusade or even early heresy era. Her markings are more stylised and bold, Younger, showing the dynamic shift within the legion itself. She shows none of the markings of the old guard (th stripes on Geironul for example showing her Terran origins)

While sharing the knotwork as a common feature there are subtle differences, unifying and separating the vehicles.

I did start to over complicate things, so I dialled it back a bit.

The symbol below the wolfs head is the Futhark rune Hraethigaldur. It means Put fear in the enemy. Thought it was quite appropriate.

I did do the wolf head in red & yellow, but it didn't work, i darkened the yellow and it was worse, so I took it back to grey. The added complication with the grey is tat it was a custom mix, as at the time I didn't have any standard mech grey, so getting the colours to match has been a pain.

I am not sure how to do links o certain pages for the wee stories and finished pictures etc, so maybe do a summary of 1 picture from each painted vehicle/ unit or something? I was tempted at one point to bin the thread and start a new one, but I think that was a silly idea.

Using Khorne Red as a glaze over a Khorne Red, & Drakenhof Nightshade base. Final highlight was adding some evil suns scarlet to the mix.

Hate trying to do power weapon effects.

 

I am thinking the fists are too yellow, should I tone them back o, I was thinking to paint them black?

Also, each one has a shield which will go on te fore-arm of the combi weapon. Do I stick to doing the shields. If not I had an idea to put the design on the left leg of each terminator.

What brand magnifier is yours? Lovely  models, I love the 'mini contemptor' look of tartaros armour. I especially like the last one, it looks like he's seen a target and is advancing to meet the challenge!

The one I use is from RS components.

 

I did find one at Maplin which is a bit smaller, but a lot cheaper.

Most tend to be £100 or more.

 

This one belongs to my employer, so I use it when I am at work (on an oilrig, so stuck here all day and night lol)

Not much of an update:

 

I did the black sections of the helms & did some general tidying up.

 

I also redid the gold on the shoulder guards as most had gotten paint on them and re-did the gold o the chest of 3 terminators.

Used Sycorax bronze for the lades power units.

 

I got depressed after doing the chests as the new golds in no way match the burnished and shining gold of old. Plus some detail was lost too.

I then repainted all the grey armour and washed in nuln oil, ready for highlighting up again :(

 

Since that faux pas, I have started to go off them a wee bit, they just look like grey marines to me..... I am wondering what to do to get the spark back, or at least to give them a Fenryka edge?

 

One idea was to try an embossed leather effect using just paint on the power fists, like a fingerless glove :D Put a simple pattern on it.

Add some runes to the power blades, and perhaps few pelts here and there. your leather gauntlet idea is neat, even just a tiny celtic knot type fringe would look good imo.

I like the idea of runes on blades, but going to leave that for now. The pelts for now as well, as I do not have any modelling putty on the rig, but I will do some runes or designs on the armour...

I like how the leather turned out, but I think you should paint the metal studs for some contrast. I can't help but notice all the studs on the model are unpainted; painted metal studs (imo) bring subtle variety to broad swathes of plain armour plating.

I will go back and paint the studs.

 

The armour was repainted grey because it was looking messy.

 

I will give it another go. The paint has gone milky & the flecks are from the metallics. Probably because I did not clean out my paint cup D'oh.. So let that be a less to everyone. Always use clean water.

 

If it works then  will do different patterns for each terminator.

 

I am still tempted to give them shields though :)

Shields are pretty sick, why not magnetize them? One idea I have is making oversized shields for my tartaros and playing them as cataphractii.

I was going to make wrist mounts for them and put them across the forearm partially covering the combimelta.

 

Funnily enough, I was sitting here working out if my 3mm magnets would be strong enough to hold the coins I use for shields. A good anchor point would be the circular elbow joint.

 

Hmm, you might be on to something... I could then leave the fists plain for now and duplicate the shield design on one of the terminator legs o jazz it up.

 

The fist was originally to be used to do a pack marking.

 

Seems I have some experimenting to do :)

Thanks to BCK's advice, I was going to stop once I had gotten the pattern down once and washed it once.

 

By repeatedly going over it and rewashing, it has added a lot more depth to the designs. As he suggested

Fantastic! , the leather adds a much needed norse feel (yellow just doesn't cut it). Having the studs painted adds a little more variety as well.

Greyed the armour and washed with nuln oil, then did 1 pass of grey. Think I went too heavy on the first pass though. Need to thin the paints more I think!

Might wash again with nuln oil and go for another coat of grey.

 

If that fails (which it might, by making the armour too dark) I will just restart.

Well, after the pigs breakfast I had made of the armour, I think I may have redeemed myself.

 

The models are functionally done. As in they are tabletop ready, but to me they are 95% there. However I leave the rig tomorrow, so I need to pack up tonight.

 

So what is left to do?

 

Tidy the paint, Some has rubbed off where I have held the models, so re highlight afew patches, then matte varnish them to stop the paint coming off. The last big detail will be to do a personal design on the left leg of each suit of armour. 

 

Oh and Runfyre... I will paint the studs, I promise ;)

 

Each  model was destined to receive a shield with their personal mark, as they are Wolf Guard and entitled to display their symbol at arms. However in 30K this may not be legal. So until such time I will paint the design, or part of the design on the leg armour. When I get home I will look out the magnets and see if there is a way to attach the shields without ruining the models.

Squad leader. Unusually he bears no personal affectation on his gauntlet like his squad-mates, however what is also unusual is the gauntlet itself, which is of unknown configuration. Imbedded within seems to be the blade of a sword (possibly former weapon of the gauntlet bearer). Also a new symbol adorns the left shoulder which is usually reserved for the Legion symbol. Why has this been displaced? Does this represent a higher power?

Severl tings of note. Unusual use of Cataphractii helm with Tartaros plate, also the Ancient Norse symbol of the Valknut which adorns the fist... Another symbol within the squad of the Mythical Norse god Odin... Possible divergence from the Secular truth.... Does the squad require enlightenment

 

Other things to note.... The squad seems to lack squad markings or any other form of identifier (intentional?) PLus the use of the Imperiial Eagle on the chest of the armour. Tis is highly unusual and possibly a cause for investigation... Is it an outward symbol of fealty to the Imperium?

 

Addendum: Vehicles found working alongside the unknown squad which appear to originate from the 6th Legionnes Astartes.

Designated Herja, in Futhark... meaning: Devastation.

Newer Achilles class Land Raider. Runes on the flannk are denoted as a Ginfaxi, which is said to award courage in battle, the smaller rune on the front is siad to put fear into the enemy.

Designated: Geironul Meaning, Ancient Futhark Spear carrier or Spear thrower.This vehicle is of early crusade design and is likely used to bear the terminator squad to war. The name sems appropriate as by previous reports Geironul was used as the spear tip for many of Russ' legendary assaults as the 6th Legio fought to reclai the lost worlds of man.
