Raktra
How long had it been since Mortarion had withdrawn his men and left the Berserkers to die? Fatigue, casualties and the dense mist brought about by artillery strikes hurling sand into the air all suggested hours - hours and hours and hours. Raktra tried to convince himself of that, tried to make his eidetic memory fail him for once, so that he could genuinely believe that it had taken more than the span of twenty minutes to watch his Legion go from strength to shadows, and that more time had passed to allow him to move on from this fresh betrayal. He even made to pretend that those he fought were something else entirely, perhaps a heavily-armoured Xenos race or advanced human rebels. Anything to deny the fact that the last bastion of trust and camaraderie he had in the universe had left him as nothing more than a bullet sponge. A tear rolled down his face. A tear of rage, but one all the same. It was a tear that history would never be able to tell of, nor he would admit to. But his rage needed a sufficient outlet, and amidst the turmoil and chaff that was the Astartes of other legions at war, one target presented himself as a good place to start. As he exited his infamous battle-tank Tormentor, the Primarch Perturabo barely had time to survey the battlefield before being tackled through the air by a black shape of chain and pale muscle. (Round 2 to come later tonight) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298232-il-vii-the-berserkers-of-uran-thread-1/page/8/#findComment-3917464 Share on other sites

Raktra
I still owe you a sketch. Don't worry, it's happening. For now, TO BATTLE.Raktra gets first turn, and bounds ahead. Unfortunately the rest of the turn is pretty embarrassing for him, as he fails his charge (even with Fleet) and Perturabo's frighteningly good Overwatch rolls continue, blowing two wounds off as he stumbles along. No IWND. Raktra:4 Perturabo:6 Perturabo takes swift advantage of this reprieve, firing both wrist and bombard at Raktra, but with no wounds from his wrist and the one bombardment shell saved, his brow begins to sweat as the dust clears and his enemy still stands.Raktra:4 Perturabo:6 Raktra moves again, now so close to Pert that he can see individual bristles in his brother's stubble. Carrying on with his useless shooting and bad luck with Overwatch, he takes one wound in exchange for a successful charge and his Hammer of Wrath bounces off the thick grey plate. Finally able to get his blade dirty, Raktra lands five hits and ends up causing one wound thanks to a Grind-related re-roll, while Pert responds in kind with a single hit and wound, which Raktra fails and becomes concussed. Happily though, he passes his Blind test. No IWND.Raktra:2 Perturabo:5 Seeking to close the wound gap, Raktra's attacks are savage this round, with four hits resulting in three failed saved on Perturabo's part, and that was without re-rolls! Not wanting to be totally shown up, another pair of savage hammer blows land on Raktra, his failed save concussing him again, and this time blinding him! No IWND Raktra:1 Perturabo:2 Swinging at a limp-wristed WS1, Raktra still manages a trio of hits and two wounds, on of which triggers Grind and knocks his brother down to his last wound. A tense bunch of rolls follow as Perturabo once more lands a pair of S10 blows, both of which wound. Statistics say that Raktra should fail at least one, and so the dice clatter on the table - a five and a four. By the skin of his teeth he survives, and shakes off the effects of blind in preparation for the next round of combat. Of course, no IWND. Raktra:1 Perturabo:1 Blood flies through the air, alongside several limbs, bones, and a stray eyeball. With all of his faculties intact, Raktra turns Perturabo into a warped pile of guts, with four hits, four wounds (three Grinds) and a full compliment of failures after re-rolls leaving the master of the IVth at negative-three wounds. He had managed to throw the wild fool off and damage a substantial amount of Raktra's armour, but underestimated the effectiveness of the devices known as impact thrusters. Before even his reflexes could let him reload, the infamous teeth of the Grinder were upon him, turning the tank-like plating of the Logos into embarrassingly twisted scrap metal. "You idiot, you'll ruin everything!" Perturabo roared, stunning Raktra with a sharp blow on the collarbone. "Remind yourself who your allies are, Skyhunter, and turn your attention to the bastards we came here to fight in the first place!" Another swing came for Raktra's head, but a lucky slip on blood-drenched stone caused him to drop just far enough to save him from mutilation. "Allies?" He spat, jumping back to set up another charge with his thrusters. "What kind of allies would leave my men and I out in the open to die?" "I had nothing to do with this!" Their weapons locked, faces inches apart. "Whatever Horus had planned for you, I was unawa-""SHUT UP!" Raktra slammed his forehead into Perturabo's, slamming him to the floor with shocking force. Pinning him beneath his knees, he gripped his chainsword in both hands and brought it down over and over and over onto his brother, the coal-coloured metal beginning to drip deep red before long. A tiny bubble of near-silence wrapped around their duel, as several Space Marines stopped their own battle to stare in horrified awe at the brutal carnage. For many, the image of Raktra, screaming for the fleshy puddle that was once a great Primarch to shut up, was one that would haunt them every time their eyes closes for decades. Raktra
I'm gonna give a little bit more background a shot right whilst I figure out a good excuse for Raktra and Pert to fight again in their pre-match fluff. Let's go, boys.Legion Traits For the most part, the Berserkers were nothing too distinct within the brotherhood of the legions. Savage close combat was famously prevalent amongst the World Eaters and the Blood Angels, and not unheard of in the ranks of others such as the Space Wolves. Nor was their savagery of any real note, although their precise method of brutality was noted as being an interesting balance between the mindless butchery of the World Eaters and the slow bleed of the Night Lords. Even their rebellious nature was not something that was new. Indeed, aside from their eventual flight from the Imperium, nothing would have marked the Berserkers of Uran as anything special were it not for the unique mutation universal in their geneseed. All Marines develop a keen sense of where to strike a foe to best destroy him, learning quickly from experience and utilising their eidetic memory as a weapon in its own right. However, some foes can confound even the Emperor's Finest, their abominable alien anatomies proving difficult to decipher and necessitating an unreasonable amount of resources to overcome. This is where the Berserkers came into play - somehow, whether through design or by freak accident, those implanted with Raktra's geneseed would see not flesh, bone and steel when they went to war. Flashing like bright lights in the night sky, vital organs and arteries would reveal themselves to the eyes of the Berserkers, and their training revolved around this unique gift. Whilst a challenge to effectively use at range, the crush of close quarters allowed them to take full advantage of these momentary glimpses and strike where an enemy could not resist. This brought them into great demand as the first assault force to be deployed against unknown or particularly difficult species. This once-celebrated trait took a darker turn during their rebellion, with the apothecaries of the legions that crossed their paths finding themselves unable to repair the wounds caused by the blades of the sons of Uran. Uniquely of the legions, and particularly strange for one with such a focus on close combat, the Berserkers entirely banned the use of jump packs, and heavily restricted the deployment of such technology as jetbikes and Land Speeders. None would dare admit to knowing the reason for fear of crossing the temperamental Primarch, but still it was widely-known. The fear that the creatures known as "Angels" had spread on Uran had seeped into the practices of the legion, leading them to avoid taking to the skies wherever possible. Determined not to let this become a weakness, however, the Techmarines of the legion worked alongside Raktra to design and develop a unique piece of equipment dubbed "impact thrusters", a type of pressure-based device attached to the greaves of power armour to aid the Space Marine's mobility by firing into the ground as they ran, adding momentum and speed to their advances. The Berserkers of Uran were often noted as deploying at uncommonly high strengths for each engagement, committing far more men to each campaign than strategists deemed required to complete the task at hand. Debates abound as to whether or not this was an act of mercy or cruelty on their part - on the one hand, their victories were swift and decisive, with barely any chance for the enemy to react resulting in a significant reduction in casualties for the human auxillia units that often accompanied astartes into battle. On the other, even those enemies who would agree to a surrender or would retreat to populated civilian areas were given no quarter, the Uran merely battering the innocents alongside the guilty and leaving nothing behind but piles of the broken. Their callous methods of subjugation were what eventually drove their deployments to closely match those of the World Eaters and Death Guard's, with only total oblivion as the outcome. On a deeper level, their reputation drove an enormous wedge between the members of the Salamanders and the Berserkers, the former's (relatively) gentle nature clashing harshly with the enhanced thuggery of the latter. It was yet another schism in the history of the Berserkers that would lead to vicious conflict in the coming years just as it would with the Blood Angels, and even within their own ranks.Okay, so a lot of that stuff you know anyway, but I felt like giving a bit of less-choppy writing a go. If you guys like it I'll try and do more of these little pieces. Raktra
Trying to figure out what I could do for a Legion relic. Obviously going to be a weapon given the nature of these guys, but can't quite figure what. Something handing out Rampage feels like it could be fun, but I dunno if that would be a bit much in concert with their other rules. Hell, if I get stuck, I'm just gonna rip off Gabriel Seth and leave it at that... simison
Always a good idea to look to the BA for advice. I still need to come up with my legion relic, which I'll do after I get the Organization chapter done. Do you want to have the relic reflect the Berserker's innate sense for where to hit someone? Slips
You could give them a special Thunder hammer that, at its base, is slightly worse than a Normal Thunder hammer but has a secondary profile that can be used for 1/2 of the Units listed Attacks on its profile rounded down? So a model with 3 attacks would only get 1 super hit but a model with 4 will still get 2. I say profile attacks only so that way you dont stack and Rage/Rampage/Charge/Whatever Bonuses and just wreck HARD with it. Model it as a Thunder hammer with a Rocket/Jet engine strapped to the back of the Hammers Head? Call it the Storm Bolt Pattern Thunder Hammer So two profiles: Melee S+3 Ap 3 Concussive, Specialist Weapon and Melee Sx2 Ap 1 Concussive, Blind, Fleshbane, Armorbane, Unwieldy, Specialist Weapon Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298232-il-vii-the-berserkers-of-uran-thread-1/page/8/#findComment-3927342 Share on other sites
Hesh Kadesh
What about; Fulgurite Mattock; Rending Concussive Power Maul (so +2, AP4), with the option to be wielded Two Handed, gaining Two Handed and Unwieldly and replacing Rending with Smash special rule. For a brawling legion, picking up a farm tool is awesome, IMHO. So, S6 AP4 Rending Concussive, with +1 Attack available, or potential S10 AP2 Unwieldly Concussive. Raktra
I actually really like that. Okay, I will admit that AP4 kind of sucks, but making it AP3 would be too mean (unless the S bonus is only +1? Hmm). Either way, I have some ideas for modelling that. Raktra
Let's finish off Pert vs. Rak.The pulse and swell of the Warp was thick here, clinging to the armour and flesh of those present like a film of oil. Just being in this place left one feeling as though they were being invaded, defiled, the unseen caresses of faintly emergent daemons molesting those in its grasp. Even the ghoulish wraith-constructs of the Eldar felt it, their movements slowed by the servants of Slaanesh aching to devour what lay within their spirit stones. And still, the aliens, Medusans, Olympians and children of Chemos and Uran battled on, their volatile emotions and acts of destruction causing the energies to quiver and shift. Fulgrim - or rather, the thing that wore what was once Fulgrim - had not expected this turn of events. All likelihoods indicated that between the pursuit of the Imperium and the trap on Istvaan, the Berserkers would be wiped out. Yet here they were, albeit so few of them that they could have barely taken a small continent alone, never mind wage war with any semblance of aptitude. Still, their presence here was an issue, as they disrupted his carefully laid-out plan. Descending from the perch he had been using to indulge himself by watching Perturabo destroy Iron Hands veterans with the former weapon of their primarch, he moved to draw the Laer blade and end things quickly. A familiar 'thud-crash' sound stopped him, and in a swift movement he melted back into the shadows just in time to avoid being seen by Raktra as he launched himself forward with his thrusters, swinging that graceless sword of his and carving through everything in his path. Hearing the commotion, Perturabo swung around to engage, not wasting any words on ceremony as he aimed his wrist-cannon."No!" Hissed Fulgrim. "This is not how it is meant to be!"Raktra gets first turn, and refuses to be the subject of another bombardment landing on his head, firing Heartworm so rapidly that, though it didn't wound, it did throw Perturabo off balance long enough for a successful charge with no wounds from overwatch. Hammer of Wrath bounces off Pert as usual, but a solid five hits and four wounds, one of which was a Grind, chops a wound off after the save re-roll and starts the combat in earnest. Perturabo's response is swift, Forgebreaker's two hits knocking a wound off the Skyhunter and concussing him yet again. However, the Warp's energies have clearly invigorated Raktra as no sooner does he suffer the wound does it close up, passing his IWND roll.R:6 P:5 Raktra's second round of attacks carry on much like the first, though only two hits land this time. Still, with a Grind and a regular wound, Pert fails his re-roll save again and is down to two-thirds his starting strength. Concussing Raktra, his hammer connects once and wounds once with a failed saved, ensuring that they fight on even initiative for another round. The Warp shows no favour here and no IWND is passed for Pert. R:5 P:4 Wherever he was hit with that hammer, it took it out of Raktra for a round, because despite landing an impressive four wounds, one with Grind, all saves are passed by Perturabo. On the other hand, the flurry of strikes must have put him on the back foot as well, as his pair of hits translated into a single wound which both failed to penetrate Raktra's forcefield and failed to blind him. Worse, Raktra begins to heal again, putting him back at full strength for the next round. R:6 P:4 The power of the Warp flowing through him, a faint red aura concerning all those nearby, Raktra cuts two wounds from Perturabo this round, after four hits and three successful wounds with one Grind helping out. Pert reacts harshly, breaking another fistful of his brother's bones and knocking off one wound again, no blinding though. Finally, Pert passes an IWND test, but Sire of the Berserkers renders that moot.R:5 P:2 As the final round opens, both Primarchs swing simultaneously. Perturabo's attacks only hit once, and shockingly fail to wound, whereas Raktra deals four hits, two wounds (both Grind), and both fail even without the benefit of Grind kicking in. Falling in a heap, Perturabo dies.As the two began their clash, a huge spiral of warpfire surrounded them, cutting them off from the rest of the combatants. Fulgrim hissed in daemon-tongue, sparks shooting from his lips. If Perturabo were to fall prematurely, his plan for ascension may be compromised. He wove through the various power armoured and elfen forms duelling in the chamber, scanning the column intently and searching for the correct words to break a gap in the inferno. For a moment, it appeared to have worked - Raktra and Perturabo were in clear view, and Fulgrim balked at the site of Raktra's rapidly closing wounds and burning red aura. The surprise cut through his concentration and the flames leapt back up, laughing faces in the blaze. Seconds stretched into minutes, and with an explosive outburst, the blaze dissipated, and all present craned their necks to see the result. On the ground lay the Lord of Iron, bisected and broken. Standing above him, Raktra's body bled crimson energy. His eyes turned toward Fulgrim and exploded, the pitch black holes vomiting smoke. Fulgrim readied his weapon and swore he could hear the laughter of an ancient and blood-fuelled being echo throughout the chamber."Phoenician!" Raktra roared, his voice distorted and warped to something beyond mortal. "Your bell tolls!"So, two wins, one loss. I feel as though I've got a much better balance going on now that Grind has a limitation to it. As you can guess from above, Fulgrim's next on the chopping block. Raktra
I'm refusing to give Fulgrim the Laer Blade, as the damn thing sucks. So he'll be using Fireblade for this duel. ROUND EINS Fulgrim gets first, so he sprints forward through the maelstrom, stopping at 15" to fire his volkite, both shots hitting and wounding, but not penetrating Raktra's armour. Raktra: 6 Fulgrim: 6 Raktra answers by rushing his brother, following in his footsteps by hitting and wounding with Heartworm but failing to get past the Gilded Panopoly. Making the charge, Fulgrim's lightning reflexes nevertheless allow him to go first. Pathetic rolling, however, meant that his seven attacks only resulted in a pair of hits and a single wound, which was promptly saved. Raktra proved marginally more successful, with a trio of hits and wounds, leaving Fulgrim with a deep cut in his flank.Raktra: 6 Fulgrim: 5 Fulgrim became much more impressive this time, displaying the lethal skills he used to dispatch Ferrus Manus by hitting with a mighty five attacks (after some master-crafted help), and landing five wounds. Though Raktra may be strong, he wasn't strong enough and three saves were failed. Enraged, and full of the daemonic energies that possessed him whilst fighting Perturabo, Raktra makes four successful hits that each cause a Grind wound. After the re-rolls, Raktra's given as good as he got by slicing three more wounds from his opponent, who struggles to regenerate due to Sire of the Berserkers. No IWND this time.Raktra: 3 Fulgrim: 2 The daemon within screamed in agony, and like a cornered serpent lashed out. Fulgrim's attacks hit four times and wound twice, once more finding a chink in the Behemoth Cuirass and removing a wound from Raktra. Fire burning in his empty eye sockets, Raktra rams the Grinder repeatedly into Fulgrim, four hits and three wounds putting Fulgrim down to his last after saves, and the violence fuelling his body once more as Raktra passes IWND.Raktra: 3 Fulgrim: 1 More poor rolls from Fulgrim, possibly caused by the great rends in his precious, precious torso. All of his seven attacks result in nothing but a single passed save. Despite fending off the majority of Raktra's attacks, the two that slipped through proved his undoing, as one managed to destroy what little was left of his defences and Fulgrim lay dead. The air became thick and clotted as the two possessed Primarchs fought; one's patron filling the air with particles of mortal blood, and the other with even more vile bodily fluids. Legionnaires and xenos of all stripes choked and died in droves, their arteries detonating or flesh turning to wax. Those few that managed to find cleaner air and shelter still battled on, the icy spite of the Iron Hands clashing against the bitterness and arrogance of the traitor forces. The duel raged, Fulgrim's swordsmanship equalled by Raktra and his speed matching the Berserker's strength. As time wore on this proved to be Fulgrim's undoing - though he could strike faster than his foe, the few powerful blows that broke through his defences did more than all of his numerous cuts combined. Bloodied and weary, the thing that wore the Phoenician's skin dropped to its knees, all strength drained. Swinging his gigantic chainblade, Raktra clove Fulgrim in two, the daemon released back to the warp with a ululating scream. The mass of energy that had been built up through Fulgrim's scheming began to shift focus once more, the violet hue in the air darkening to crimson. Raktra took in a deep breath, deeper than any living creature should be able, and drew it all within himself. Spasming and thrashing, his body mutated out of control, and the Blood God carved another victory into his brass murals. I feel as though I really forced that fluff section. Good thing it's not "canon". Also... RELIC: Fulgurite Mattock (50pts) This deadly weapon traces its origins back to the day of Raktra's rescue by the Emperor, though its discovery did not happen until some time later. After the purging of the daemons that were mistakenly named Angels by the natives, the Emperor performed a rite of cleansing on the tainted land, leaving his mark on the place and burning away any remaining daemonic essence. When the time came for the world to be fortified and made ready for the recruitment of youths to become Space Marines, this area of was chosen as the ideal location for the screening and training of the Legion's librarians, as the risk of accidental feedback from the Warp was greatly reduced in such a holy area. Whilst constructio the foundations, members of the dig crews found one of their drilling machines had blunted itself on seemingly soft earth. Digging manually to search for the root of the problem, they uncovered a long, thick curved spike that had become lodged in the ground. Those present at the discovery said to have been overcome by a feeling of overwhelming awe, yet at the same time fear, when they gazed upon it. Soon enough, the Berserkers came to investigate the object, and stole it away to be examined more thoroughly. Though they did not realise its full power, nor that it came from the Emperor himself, the Berserkers recognised it as an extremely potent tool and, as is their way, immediately began to weaponise it. This resulted in what was essentially a stylised thunder hammer that required no power source, and would respond to the wielder's preferred fighting style almost perfectly, be it a serious of swift blows or a vicious two-handed gouge. Raktra
Right, so uni's been kicking my ass recently, which is one of the main reasons why I've slacked off on this so much, but now I've got ten weeks until my next hand-in, which is something I literally can't work on at home, so I can devote some time to the Berserkers once again. Raktra
I've had some ideas toying around in my head with it, mind that was back when the Berserkers were closet catholics bent on repentance and the like, so it's not as fitting now. Still, the theme of finding weaknesses is still there, stuff like "if the enemy unit has any gets hot weaponry, successful saves against get hot rolls must be re-rolled". Slips
With how fragile they are for Terminators (due to rules) and how Burst-y they are in terms of damage potential and how they DRAMATICALLY fall off once they do bust their load, I'd say having the Squad of 5 be 200 instead of 230 would be fair and have each additional terminator be 35ppm? simison
It does seem a little pricey right now. Which pattern of terminator armor are they using? Raktra
I forgot you had to note that in HH. Start off with Tartaros/Indominus, probably throw in an option for Cataphractii.
