Just wanted to say that you single-handedly got me to start a Salamanders army, really inspiring stuff and on top of everything, you've managed to make me change my mind about Ashmantle to the better! Keep up the amazing work!

@Flint13 - Thanks mate, much appreciated. It's quite a simple method so I'm glad it gets such good feedback! smile.png Great to see you noticed the two-tone hide on his shoulder pad, I thought it might make it look more realistic. I don't know what colour salamanders actually are but I figure green must be in there somewhere!

@Knight of the Raven: Cheers man smile.png I wasn't sure if the tactical guy was a bit static but I just wanted a simple pose to match his subordinates.

@Anaziel - thanks! It's an adaptation of the FW scheme, they use all-gold helmets for veterans but it's a bit jarring, so went for brass face-plates.

@Spaced Hulk - thanks! Painting coal-black skin is surprisingly hard so it was nice to paint something a bit more mid-tone, the highlights are much easier. I don't plan on having many marines with their helms off however. Call me superstitious but they always seem to fail more armour saves without their helms....

@Jeken - Wow, that's so cool - I'm honoured to have inspired you to join the ranks o'green! biggrin.png Hope you post some of your sallies up soon - definitely need to redress the balance against the hordes of Night Lords out here msn-wink.gif

Pleased I've helped you come round a bit to ashmantle too, although I admit I'm surprised to see he's a model that divides opinion, I've always quite liked it, but then maybe I'm blinded by my allegiance msn-wink.gif

In terms of updates, I'm enjoying my time away from the painting station and focussing on my degree project (for once). Two more tactical marines are mid-way as of last update - just need to paint the sub-assemblies then they'll be at the same stage as their sergeant. Plan to make a FW order asap so I can build and paint the company champion. Provided I finish the tactical squad by mid-january, by then this makes for an army consisting of:

HQ:

Captain Pellas Mir'san (150)

Command Squad - Apoth, Banner, Champ, Flamer (150)

Chaplain - Jump pack, plasma pistol (120)

Bray'arth Ashmantle (265)

Troops:

Tactical Squad - Vet Sgt w/Combi-melta, flamer, heavy bolter (175)

Fast Attack:

Assault Squad - Vet Sgt w/Lightning Claws, 2x flamer (220)

Stormtalon Gunship - Stormhammer missiles (125)

Total - 1205pts. (unbound)

Following this I'll probably add another tactical squad (similar points, say 185 to allow for variation on sgt's wargear) and a devastator squad (4x lascannons, vet sgt etc - probs about 240pts). Making a grand total of 1630, so to make it up to 1850 I'll probably add some transports and some more specialist units.

Anyway....updates coming up soon, but as always thanks for looking and for all your kind comments, encouragement and feedback. smile.png

These Salamanders are sooooo good!!! Would you kindly post a skin and armour tutorial up? I have a Armaggedon Army going on ,the theme i choose is 1000 Points from every of the main Marine Chapters present (during the third war)and after that 1000 Points Steel Legion and Adeptus Mechanicus. Now that i have Black Templars, Raven Guard and Flesh Tearers almost done next would be Salamanders so a tut for you're awesome green Armour and the black skin would be great! Will you build the Honor Guard with those Cloaks from the Dark Elve Corrsairs from Fantasy??? Keep it up i will follow you're sons of Vulkan with great intresst!

Happy Gaming

I went through whole thread and must say I love your work. Nice tonned colours, overall looks perfectly dusty, dry and like being in close proximity to fire ;) What golden do you use? It's nice brownish. It's not gw gold, isn't it?

Hey guys :) humbled by the kind comments - very much appreciated! I'm happy to post a tutorial up if you'll find it useful.

The models are made up into sub assemblies first.

Black parts (backpack, gun, shoulder pads) undercoated with Chaos Black spray. Green parts (torso + limbs, head) undercoated using Humbrol 'Dark Green' acrylic spray.

Armour (undercoated dark green):

1) All over wash with Nuln oil.

2) Layer of Waaagh Flesh, avoiding recesses.

3) Highlight edges with Loren Forest.

4) Second edge highlight with Straken Green

5) Final edge highlight with Nurgling Green.

6) Basecoat elbow/knee joints with Leadbelcher, then wash with Nuln oil.

Skin for bare heads:

1) Layer of 1:1 Codex Grey: Abaddon Black (yes I still have a pot of codex grey...)

2) Nuln oil wash

3) Layer of 2:1 Grey:Black avoiding recesses

4) Highlight with 3:1 Grey:Black

5) Second highlight with Codex grey

6) Final extremity highlight with 1:1 Codex grey:Ceramite White

7) Eyes painted with Mephiston Red, then jokero orange, then small dot of ceramite white in centre of eye.

Gold:

1) Layer of Leadbelcher.

2) Layer of Runelord Brass

3) Wash with Adrax Earthshade

4) Dry-brush highlight with Runefang steel

Hope that helps! If you any more questions feel free to ask :)

@ApostelofCorax, that's a cool sounding army! Might try allying in another chapter myself to catch a break from the green tide ;)

Thanks as always for looking!

  • 3 weeks later...

And, we're back! Had a few weeks of hobby-free time and bouncing back in with a minor update - more to come as models are finished! Some work done on the next two tactical marines from squad one. Arms, guns and heads on the way. Also, a vindicator that my friend sold to me is ready to be basecoated, so i'm looking forward to finally to having some proper tankage in this force!

Fella on the right will be about to throw a grenade, hence the strange angle of his torso.

In other news, I'm hoping to make my first tentative steps into the world of 30k soon. I'm faced with that all too common terrible decision to make though - which Legion?

I've narrowed it down to 6 unthinkable options :P

Salamanders (only loyalists I would consider using, and I could roll them into this blog)

Night Lords (sorely tempted as the models and fluff are kick ass)

Word Bearers (the hipster in me says 'do something no one else does' cool.png and the gal vorbak look ace)

World Eaters (Betrayer by ADB...)

Emperor's Children (very nice models all round, cool colour scheme and ooze character, also a fine opponent for Raktra's Iron Hands that I hope to one day face!)

Alpha Legion (I've always liked their colour scheme(s) and fluff)

Any suggestions from you lovely heresy players out there? :)

Firstly, love your Salamanders...

Secondly, regarding 30K - Salamanders are the obvious choice: lots of great FW stuff, plus you can have a continuation of theme. Furthermore, it is easy to mix and match models and play right away, without slowly building up to a force that is playable.

Lastly: Vulcan.

If you choose Traitors, I'd suggest Emperor's Children. Interesting colour scheme and some some great FW goodies.

Have fun.

Again, I'd say Salamanders. Otherwise Go Alpha's

Night Lords are cool, but they are being a bit done  to death just now.

You could just do a mixed force maybe, Istvaan 5 or the siege of Terra... Mix and match with the units you like. Or run a Salamander army with a smattering of the traitor legions you like and use them as the loyal imdomitable few... Paint units like the Gal Vorbak, and use them for diorama/ display purposes??

What other way is there to do 8th legion? Well... besides maybe vindictively :D

Stoneheart, with all your awesome work so far, I'd love to see your take on the wacky color scheme of the Alpha Legion. I think you could do some pretty awesome and unique things with it.

Thanks for the kind feedback about my sallies guys, really motivating :D More work to be done tonight!

Re: which legion?

I'm getting a good feeling about the Alpha legion. I like the rules (pilfered from 1d4chan), mainly because I can pinch another legion's elite choice if I use their unique rite of war cool.png I like the colour scheme too, whatever it is! Blue/green/purple? Bleenurple? Grueple?

I think Salamanders in the end would be good on the tabletop, and I would like to attempt them one day, but I fear I'd get salamander-fatigue with having both legion and chapter on my plate. That said, I could do a 'pride of the legion' style force with firedrakes, vulkan and pyroclasts just to be a little different from the generic guys I'm currently wading through.

Thanks for your advice guys. I'm waiting till after christmas to start them though so if anyone has a winning argument in favour of the other legions I listed I'm all ears! :)

if you went alphas, pleeeeaaassseeee do the whole scale pattern free hand on their armor, it'd look soooooo cool! biggrin.png

as far as reasoning behind them, do both salamanders and alphas in 40k with throwback legion era models, then create some sorta campaign, if you get bored, throw another chaos or imperial ally/ xeno 3rd party, 4th party, and so one, to sate your painting wishes and modelling desires. works every time. happy.png

like say, alphas as the main controlling hand behind a rebellion on some distant planet or somethin', fighting a salamander/militarum (PDF) counter force,a build it as ya go sorta deal. only draw back, is that you'd need some sort of story, and writing can be quite a pain....... (not to mention, the potential thousands you'd be sinking into it, but it's warhammer, are we REALLY concerned about the money? or the fun of model-making?) At least you'd have a solid thread to keep ya busy for, i don't know, a couple YEARS. msn-wink.gif

just my 2 cents. either way, you absolutely need more salamanders, they are really well done.
