Salamanders 2nd Company - Armour flame tutorial on pg 8

Hi all! Sorry it's been so long since my last update. This one is a small one as I've been concentrating on uni work lately. Also despite myself I've got a little back into LOTR SBG, I'm determined to get a decent army built before it goes the way of the dodo.

Anyway, to business.

@The Yak: The privelage is all mine mate, thanks for looking - I've been reading through your raptors stuff, lovely work and highly entertaining! Wonder if I've ever bumped into you at GW Liverpool? I usually only go in to buy things so maybe not!

@Raktra: I might do word bearers yet. Their colour scheme is a nice departure from the sea of green I'm regularly faced with (Even my nids are green), and the Gal Vorbak are awesome models, would love to have a go at them.

@Dechende - Thanks man, much appreciated :) I really like the blue (dare I say ultra-?) marine in your avatar, very nice.

@Zeller: Purity seals are done with a base of rakarth flesh, then highlighting up to bleached bone. Writing is done with Rhinox hide watered down. Wax seals are mephiston read, nuln oil wash and then finally drybrush rakarth flesh.

@Knight of the Raven: Thanks again! :) Haha, wouldn't even know where to start with War Hounds!

@Argent Aquila - Thanks mate, more Salamanders coming today (well more of the same ;) )! I like your thinking. I keep meaning to have this approach instead of just painting one army. One of the nicest things in this hobby is having a themed collection to look at (and never have to paint again ;)  ). Maybe one day!

@Tarvick - This is true. Those books really lifted the character of the legion from cartoon baddies to something much deeper (and darker). I think it's the 'sod you all' attitude which appeals to me most, especially after trawling through so many space marine novels full of duty, honour, courage etc...all very nice but gets a bit same-y!

@Bloodsaint - thanks man. Very droll ;)

Pictures!

Test model for alpha legion (just painted the helmet and right shoulder pad so far). I quite like this scheme, it was recommended to me by a nice GW employee so can't claim this one! Basically macragge blue, sotek green and sybarite green with a glaze of waywatcher green. What do you guys think so far?

Salamanders: Tactical marine (just needs basing) and Assault Sergeant WIP:

God knows how he's ever going to use the knife on his shin guard...

Anywho, that's the last post on here for 2014! Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you!

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for your comment, and for keeping up with the WIP Atia! I'm honoured you've used the colour scheme for your own work - I'd be interested to see your version of it, especially in a 30k format.

I'm sorry to post without any pictures but this is just to inform y'all that I've adopted a new method for painting armies this year. As well as my Salamanders, I have a burgeoning Tyranid army, an Uruk hai LOTR force and plans to embark into the HH with an as-yet unconfirmed legion... :P Anyway I have therefore decided to dedicate my time to one of these armies per month. This month is 'Tyranuary' as I've got a butt-load of Tyranids and only painted one of them! Next month will be Salamanders, so expect a more exciting post then!

All the best, and happy new year! :)

I am unberably envious of your glorious Sons of Vulkan, and I am especially envious of your sublime greens.

You say you use Thraka green, yet I can only find a thraka green wash? Is TG a Citadel paint? I don't even know why I'm asking I've got so much painted with Warpstone Glow I can hardly completely switch up my colours now!

Thanks man! I feel the same way looking at other blogs on here so I feel your pain :P I like the marine in your avatar though.

It's Waagh Flesh, not Thraka green, sorry mate. It's the Ork-y names that get me mixed up!

I've never tried repainting to be honest - I have a whole army of bright green salamanders sitting there that I still use for games, hoping to phase them out as more dark green ones are completed, I couldn't go over them having spent so much time on them.

And don't knock the bright green too much, it's part of what appealed to me with Salamanders in the first place ;)

Aaand we're back! After a month of Tyranid painting which saw the questionably impressive total of 3 Tyranid Warriors and most of the Deathleaper finished, the Salamanders return to the painting table with a flurry of stuff that needed finishing - and the first actual unpainted shot on this plog (I think..)!

My target for this february:

10 Devastator marines (4 w/ lascannon, 5 w/ bolter, 1 vet sgt)

1 Company Champion

3 Tactical marines (2 w/ bolter, 1 vet sgt) (mostly finished already)

1 Assault marine (vet sgt) (mostly finished already)

So, without further ado, I present to you the latest additions to Tactical Squad 1 - Veteran sergeant and two subordinates.

Veteran Sergeant (just needed basing)

Tactical marine (just needed basing)

Tactical marine (first time seen on this forum) - i'm quite pleased with the pose on this guy!

And, the first unpainted mini on this thread - the company champion! I wanted to make the champ look like a real tribal warrior, bringing to light the barbaric side of the Salamanders culture, so he has a collection of skulls that once belonged to worthy enemies. He also carries a ritual knife which he uses for his savage ritual kills. He will be armed with a spear (power lance) and drake-hide combat shield as befits a Nocturnean plains hunter.  Thanks to Magicman for the bitz :D

That's all for now. Thanks for looking!

@Argent Aquila - thanks man - see pics below for the Co. Champion :D

@MagicMan - glad you approve, sir! Hope the finished article lives up to the name 'head hunter'!

@Uprising - glad to be back brother, thanks very much.

@GrandMagnus - Thanks brother. :)

@Grizzly_bear - Thanks brother, great minds think alike! I'm loving your scythes so far too.

Well it's been a week or so since my last reply, so here's another update. Attached are the images for the company champion, all finished, and the assault squad veteran sergeant.

http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/ah272/salamander8681/IMAG0272_zpspqlt3fsg.jpg

Assault Squad Veteran Sergeant Torr Fir'ak 'The Dactylon' - Decorated veteran warrior of the Salamanders chapter, Fir'ak served in the 3rd company for nearly half a century before being promoted to the ranks of the Firedrakes in 930 M41. Whilst a member of the vaunted 1st company he took part in many dangerous missions for the chapter and fought with distinction before volunteering to relinquish his place in the Firedrakes and taking up the post of Veteran Sergeant (Assault squad primus) in the 2nd company. This move is thought to have been spurred on following a lengthy campaign alongside Captain Mir'san's warriors against the Orks. Sharokkian by birth, he epitomises the isolationist aspect of the Promethean Creed, and is possessed of a free spirit and keen mind as well as being a naturally gifted fighter, which makes him an ideal leader of assault marines. His nickname 'The Dactylon' is a recent appellation, after the rare airborne reptilian predator which in Nocturnean culture is renowned for its proud and aloof behaviour.

Salamanders 2nd Company Champion, Matik Zo'tar. One of Zo'tars more unusual roles as Company Champion is the leading of a great hunt when 2nd company returns to Nocturne. Hailing from Epimethus, he has modified the traditional plains hunt to one he believes is far more challenging - the taking of a bull Gnorl Whale. One warrior from each of 2nd company's squads must volunteer to take part alongside Zo'tar, and together the 13 warriors go out to take their prize from the bosom of Nocturne's great Acerbian sea aboard a hunting skiff. The whale must be slain by hand and spear, not by harpoon-gun, no mean feat even for an Astartes, but serves to cement the bond between the company's squads.

Hope the fluff is suitable - thought i'd change tack a bit with the presentation of the completed models, give them a bit of a backstory or slice of info to go with them, as above.

Next to come - Devastator Sergeant and 2 lascannon-bearing marines.

Thanks for looking - as ever your continued support, comments and criticism are greatly appreciated.

@Atia - thanks! Been lurking on your WIP log too btw, very nice work on the Firedrakes! RE the helmet, same here, I'd always wondered what it would look like...I quite like it though!

@Brother Pheidias -Thanks brother, you're right though it is a bit misaligned! It took ages to glue with superglue though and now it's too heartbreaking to fix :P will probably fix it in the future when I can face going back to him haha.

Thanks for looking!
