I actually thought it was a plain jane horn, used to call the Rout to battle.

I've been tyring to post the battle report since sunday, but photobucket is freezing my laptop everytime I try. Looking at other sites now

I actually thought it was a plain jane horn, used to call the Rout to battle.

Got a 4k game in this past Saturday

Maelstrom Mission 4

Though they are nowhere near table top ready, I really wanted to try out the new Vlka Fenryka. So sorry for the stripped and unpainted army

the Rout

RoW: the Pale Hunters

HQ

Jarl with Command Squad in Rhino

Speaker to the Dead

Caster of Runes in Cataphractii Armor

Thegn on jetbike

EL

1x9 Deathsworn in LR Phobos (SttD joined)

1x10 Varagyr in Spartan (CoR joined)

TROOPS

2x10 Grey Slayers in Rhinos

1x10 Breachers in LR Proteus

HS

1x4 Skyhunter Jetbikes (Thegn joined)

LoW

1x1 Knight Paladin

enemy armor, 40k Imperial Fists Sentinels of Terra

Lysander formation, 3x10 Terminators

2x3 Lander Raider formations

1x3 Predator Annihilator formation

1x1 Knight Errant

Speaker to the Dead and Jarl

WiP Thegn and Caster of Runes

the Vlka Fenryka Deployment (taken a bit late, as the IF Raider is right in my face)

the IF deployment

table view

the IF advance, knocking 2 hull points off of the Deathsworn LR. the Wolves shimmy a bit, trying to block off the massed guns of the IF

SNEAKY PLAN TIME, SNEAKY PLAN TIME!

The Rhino creeps near the Varagyr filled Spartan, allowing it's guns to fire before moving infront of the tank to block it from Lysander and friends thunder hammers

IF turn 2, the mass of armor uses LR as shields and covers the "weaker" Preds

Operation Hide behind the Grey Slayers works about as well as can be expected...their ride is toast and half the squad fails to the Knights melta cannon, assault cannons and heavy bolters

the Thegn and Skyhunters land right next to the Knight, on target...and 2 of the 4 multi-meltas miss, 1 glances and the other only does 2 HP of damage. It looked cool.

Massed lascannons turn Lysander's ride to swiss chess, but the storm shields shrug off the stasis grenade from the deathsworn

9 Deathsworn and a Speaker to the Dead vs Lysander and 3 TH+SS Terminators

My Breacher pack charges 3 Terminators

End result, 8 dead Deathsworn, 1 dead Breacher Pack Leader to 3 dead TH+SS Terminators, 3 regular Terminators and Lysander. OUCH

Enraged by the defeat of Lysander, Terminators start spilling out of nearly every friggin LR

Through Melta cannon, flamestorm cannons, hurricane bolters, assault cannons and kitchen sinks the Grey Slayers and Breachers are forced to take, but pass, Morale Tests

The 3 Preds spin side ways and through massed lascannons kill off 3 of the Jetbikers

The IF Terminators dual charge the LR and last of the Deathsworn

While the Varagyr pile out to mess crap up

in a series of charges, the Varagyr hit the IF Terminators, 2 IF LR, and Terminators fighting the Speaker of the Dead

though they arent fast enough to save him...

The Varagyr wipe out damn near everything they touch

and yet, there are seemingly always more Terminators...

Yea, it's getting ugly down there

the Jarl exits his Rhino while the Knight again rolls poorly in difficult terrain

the two IF Terminators line up their charge, but one squad falls short!

The Varagyr defeat the IF Terminators, but take several wounds themselves

the Grey Slayer's power fist repeatedly does nothing to the LR

finally free of the rubble, the Knight punts the LR for funsies

the last of the Varagyr and Caster of Rune assault the LR, but dont do much damage

but do enough to wake up the Terminators inside, who come out to play

while the Varagyr is gunned down, the Caster of Runes meets the Terminators in close combat and they kill each other

final score of the game

the score is tied 9 to 9, but on the last turn I ended up killing the last of the Fists, tabeling them.

Victory (?) to the Vlka Fenryka!

Things I liked:

-the Deathsworn seem cool. Throwing them at TH+SS Terminators was probably asking a bit much, but they get me the Warlord (a tough one to boot) in a single round of combat.

-the Skyhunters. Though their guns failed to nuke their target, just their arrival and immediate thread was awesome. I wanna do that again

Things I didnt like:

-The Knight in ruins was just stupid. Boneheaded stupidity right there.

-Psychic powers were a waste.

all for now. I hoped for a better write up, but PB continues to crash my computer whenever I use it so I lost alot of time getting this report up.

WLK

Your Deathsworns performance makes me a bit more hopeful about them and excited to have my own in hand.

I think they worked well enough, sad that the S8 canceled out their FNP but they did drop Lysander!

How did you rate the Varagyr?

How did you arm them?

Mostly chain fists, a few with 2nd Wolf claw, 2 heavy flamers

Rule of cool, but soooooo not worth the points. A normal TD squad is like 100 pts cheaper starting off, and get WS5 on the charge...the stubborn and lordsbane aint that useful, and Hammer of Wrath of just insulting.

If I were building a "serious" list, they wouldnt be touched at all. At their points cost it just aint funny.

What unit is Tehng ?

For the cost of the Sky Hunters you could spring for a jetbike command squad... close right ?

This was an EPIC battle.

The Thegn (or Thane/Claw Leader) is a Centurion with no Consul upgrade

Not really close. The JB command squad are a bit more expensive and dont have multi-melta options. The Sky Hunters bring 1 MM per dude, and have the speed to keep up with the Raiders and Deep Strike to get nasty.

a JB command squad makes the already points sink command squad even worse off.

I am not a big fan of dedicated melta units because of the prevalence of armored ceramite we see now. I run a terminator squad for my IF with a couple of combi meltas... it's suprising how many transports they crack open... makes them more versatile. For Sky Hunters I like volkite but if it works for you that's cool.

Well both of the Wolf RoW limit me on what big guns I can bring. I think a single HS slot each.

so either I bring a squadron of Preds, LR Proteus or the Sky Hunters. Sure, AC is damn near everywhere, but it's still a S8 Ap1 gun.

Im going tot steal the Thegn on a jetbike in a sky slayer squad idea btw , So thanks for that.

Well, consider making it a Jarl. (I am)

The jetbike, combined with Aether-Rune armor makes him a 4 wound, t5 beast

With a great frost Blade he can tackle small to mid sized units in relative ease

Turn 1

Imperial Fists open the battle, with two squads of grav armed Centurions emerging from Drop Pods. The Centurions are backed up by 3 Land Raiders

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2014.52.54_zpscshh51og.jpg

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2014.52.59_zpsenexkheh.jpg

Imperial Fists Centurions do 2 glancing hits to Russ' Spartan, immobilizing it and outright destroying the Breachers' Proteus

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2015.13.41_zpsbs0gf5vd.jpg

The Vlka Fenryka respond, with the Breachers aiming melta guns at the approaching Land Raider

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2015.13.41_zpsbs0gf5vd.jpg

The Contemptor crashes through the wrecked raider to murderize the Centurions, while unpictured Russ and his Varagyr retinue avenge their Spartan

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2015.25.25_zpsfzqlkvkw.jpg

Turn 2

In a flash if light, Captain Lysander and his Terminator retinue appear over the corpses of the Centurions

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2015.46.46_zpsyg90ueqe.jpg

while Imperial Fists pile out of the Land Raiders

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2015.52.38_zpsulzxrjkt.jpg

despite his best efforts, the Contemptor Dreadnought is felled by massed lascannons of the Imperial Fists

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2016.00.06_zpsivaysasa.jpg

Upper left corner, Russ and his Varagyr get hosed down by the majority of the Imperial Fist army. Russ and a lone Varagyr survive.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2016.18.13_zpsjxxirwfw.jpg

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2016.28.10_zpslms9vkvt.jpg

The Thegn and Skyhunters deep strike to the flank of the Knight, but like last game, fail to do any significant damage to the Knight

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2016.28.00_zpsev0dhzzy.jpg

it's pandemonium right in front of the Wolves. Russ races to reach Lysander and friends while the Deathsworn and Speaker emerge to challenge Lysander

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2016.28.06_zps7iquben5.jpg

Russ makes it into combat while the Breachers charge the emergent Imperial Fists

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2016.53.02_zpsyyh4ygl3.jpg

the last of the Varagyr charges into combat with Tactical Marines

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2016.53.10_zpshtv4a0xa.jpg

the Breacher sergeant and Tactical sergeant swing and hit one another, but fail to actually hurt one another

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2016.56.01_zpstuv93l5k.jpg

Russ and Lysander meet in one on one combat, but Lysander's Storm shield proves capable of halting Russ's fury while Russ' armor proves capable of stopping his thunder hammer. The Deathsworn massed power axes prove capable of bringing down the Terminators, the Librarian and Lysander. The Speaker and two Deathsworn limp away

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2016.56.17_zpsh9g1pjsh.jpg

Turns 3 and 4

The Knight, pretty unamused by the Jetbikes, turns to deal with them

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2017.43.48_zps5o01nuhm.jpg

table view, Russ is in trouble. Lots of guns pointed at him...

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2017.43.52_zpsbvlmmy9p.jpg

if you look through the ruins, you can see the ridiculous number of guns pointing at my jetbikes

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2017.49.48_zpshf3zp4wa.jpg

The Rhinos of the Vlka Fenryka move to block off Objective 5 (its very important to me) while the Speaker and remnants of the Deathsworn engage another Tactical Squad while Russ runs into a Land Raider for safety

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2018.04.37_zpsdyn6ixgi.jpg

the Templars Redeemer wash the last of the Deathsworn and Speaker in promethium, but their armor proves sufficient to the heat

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i65/kieran_m/40k%20Battles/30%20VF%20vs%2040k%20IF%205-20-17/2017-05-20%2018.24.45_zpsuwxlohqe.jpg

the Imperial Fist Land Raider lascannons kill the last of the Deathsworn, but the Speaker's armor saves him

VICTORY FOR THE VLKA FENRYKA

All for now

I ran mine with a great frost blade  and he absolutely cleaned up , and more importantly the buffs he gives to his unit are just , fantastic if your fighting for most of the game

I've found in the few games i've played he's run with the Deathsworn. He's basically there to grant re-rolls and herd the psychos into combat.

  • 3 weeks later...
Got in a 3 way 2.5 game last saturday.

I brought the Vlka Fenryka, Rayray brought the Word Bearers and Brother Gruis brought 40k Crimson Fists.

The Vlka Fenryka

HQ: Jarl with Command Squad in a Rhino

HQ: Thegn on jetbike

HQ:Speaker to the Dead

EL: 1x9 Deathsworn in a Land Raider Phobos *SttD joins*

EL: 1x5 Varagyr in a Land Raider Phobos

TR: 1x10 Grey Slayers in a Rhino

Deployment and Turn 1

Word Bearer deployment

Vlka Fenryka deployment

Where are the Crimson Fists???

the traitor Knight and Word Bearers advance

the Word Bearer Rhinos advance up the street while the Sicarian lines up its shot

The Sicarian opens fire on the Land Raider, glancing it and leaving it shaken

The Vlka Fenryka start redeploying their tanks to protect from the soon to arrive Crimson Fists and the advancing Word Bearers

Despite one mishap, the Crimson Fists arrive in force along the flank of the Word Bearers advance and protected from the Rout

the Grav Cannons of the Centurions and the massed fire of the Tactical Squads strip 3 Hull Points off the Knight

Turn 2

The traitor Knight advances on the Rout's Land Raider while the Sicarian again takes aim. The Word Bearer Contemptors move to open fire on the newly arrived Crimson Fists

the table view

the Word Bearer and Crimson Fist Tactical Squads engage in a short range fire fight

the Word Bearers turn to face both the Rout and the Crimson Fists

the traitor Knight puts it's gigantic chainsword to work and shreds the Land Raider like swiss cheese

the Rout react to both threats with the Varagyr emerging from their wrecked Raider and prepping to charge the Knight while the Grey Slayers emerge from their immobilized Rhino and open fire on the Fists. Another Rhino moves to block return fire after the attack

the Vindicator's laser destroyer array and chainfists of the Varagyr do a massive 25 hull points of damage to the traitor Knight!

the Knight's explosion doesnt scatter, but the Cataphractii armor saves all but 1 of the Varagyr

More Crimson Fists arrive off the locator beacon off the first wave

including Pedro Kantor, a Librarian and pumped up Honor Guard

table view...the majority of 7.5k on a 2ft section of the table

the Crimson Fist Centurion turn their grav weapons on the Land Raider, forcing the Deathsworn onto the table...who are then opened fire on the rest of the Fists.
