Hi all. Small update:

I finished all the heads of the phoenix spear palatines and finished 1,5 bodies too. Gave them and Eidolon the glowy red eyes too, though some need a tiny do-over later.

Also used the tamiya clear red on the eagle cockpit (which turned out exactly as I hoped) and gave the eagle white panels to blend in with the rest of the army.

I've lost some of the motivation to finish the palatines, because I proxied 5 as a command squad, which worked way better than palatines with their current rules. They might need to get updated, or I need to be done with the rest of the army, before I find the will to finish them (though 5 with sabre, 5 with spear and Eidolon as a unit, looks darn awesome, so we'll see).

I'll be painting up the lightning next.

I can't continue with my Emperor's Children, cause of a bet I made, that I want to honour.

I did manage to paint up a Legion Champion in Terminator armour (rolling him as champion with lucid blade), and the Storm Eagle is now finished (added the last highlights and added the cockpit frame). I'll post a pic of the Eagle as soon as I can make a decent one.

In the meantime, I've decided to give our terrain some attention (used to be unpainted and random stuff, which looked silly with our good looking armies).

I will continue with my EC as soon as I can. I'm about 1/3th done with the Primaris Lightning.

Terrain to be finished:

Not captured on this pic are about 4 more pieces of terrain.

I know this has prob been asked before but how did you paint the glow around the eyelenses ? Your stuff looks amazing.

First I just paint the normal highlights on the purple and give the eye a white inner part.

Then I either take my airbrush and carefully use it to create the glow with red paint, or I use very thinned down red paint to create the same.

The phoenix guard for example, prefer the normal painting, cause I don't want the glow on the raised nose area too much (which is hard not to do when airbrushing.

But I have done it on models like that too with the airbrush, and then just repaint the gold where the red went to excessively.

So, airbrush or just thinned down paint.. both can get the same result and on my models I've used both techniques about 50/50. I preferred the airbrush when doing more then 5 models, otherwise, the painting give more control (I don't have the best of the best airbrush).

What purple did you use?

Vallejo "Hexed Lichen" is the main colour.

For shading it's simply hexed lichen with some black added more and more.

For highlights I add plain white to the hexed lichen in increasing amounts with pure white highlights on the highest edged.

Of course I start with a black primer, and start with the darkest shade and work up to lighter from there. I don't use a lot of washes in this army.

Question for you people:

Do you guys have any good pointers to which army I should paint up next? I really can't decide. I started out thinking a wanted a pure loyalist army... but Perturabo looks like an awesome model to paint (but I don't like the helmets and shoulder pads of the Iron Warriors).

- Iron hands: Ferrus Manus world make a nice scene with my Fulgrim, but the army colours of the Iron Hands seems dull

- Iron Warriors: see above

- Ultra Marines: Maybe too much of the same as my EC? With all the gold trimmings. And I don't like the model of Guilleman that much (and the helmets of the shield dudes look a little weird too).

- Imperial fist: Love the templar brethren and LOVE Sigusmund. But I don't want to play too much of a defensive army, and the rules of Dorn don't appeal to me.

- Night Lords: Love them, but this will be my brothers next army, so I won't take them.

- Raven Guard: LOVE the rules of Corax, I hope to love the model when it comes out, but as with Iron Hands, the colour scheme is quite boring. And the special units and army rules are all boring too (and those RG scouts are freakishly expensive money wise, which make me not want to buy them on principle).

- World Eaters: Don't like the bare head special units, and they are a bit too evil for me (though I like the model of Angron).

- Alpha Legion: Not sure about them, maybe when Alpharius is released, they can convince me.

- Death Guard: Love the Mortarions rules, quite like the deathshroud terminators. Hate the unit upgrade helmets and not so sure about the army scheme?

- Salamanders: My brother already has them.

- Word Bearers: Just nope

So, the ones highest on my list are: Imperial Fist and Death Guard. Blood Angels would probably beat them all if there were any models released.

If I don't like the model of Corax that's soon to be released (jigsaw puzzle) then RG are a no go.

I'm looking for a balance between an army that's fun to paint, has cool models and has rules that suit me. I like to play a strategic game, I want at least 1 cool close combat unit and a cool character.

Maybe someone has some pics of a legion that makes me rethink my opinion about them? Or perhaps someone could give me their opinion of the legion he/she plays to help me cross it of my list or make me choose it..

Blood Angels done in your paint style would be simply awe inspiring. I understand why you'd want to wait on them though.

So out of IF and DG, I think IF fit better to the things you're looking for and I think you'll do a wicked job with their yellow armor.

I just love anything that relates to angelic figures, and BA would be the only other legion I'd do NMM gold on again (think I can do better than the sanguinary guard in my first post). I've had quite some practice now with the NMM gold. You don't see it throughout my EC project, cause I don't want the look of the NMM gold to change as I make my way through finishing the army.

But I won't do an whole army with NMM like this again

I plan on making my next army look cool by nice weathering techniques. Not done much of that yet, cause I wanted to keep my EC quite clean, but I look forward to weathering.

Again, IF would lend themselves quite nice for this I think, but so would all the metallic and blackish armies (iron hands, iron warriors, raven guard).

Tomorrow I'll know if Corax will keep RG in the race for my next army (jigsaw should reveal the model tomorrow).

Excellent stuff, very pleased to see the Tamiya worked out so well on your Fire Raptor and it looks great. The white really works well on the front :smile.:

Nemac

Yes it turned out exactly as I wanted, thank you :). Quite pleased with my lightning primaris cockpit too. It and the apothecary will be finished in not too long.

So, Raven Guard is a no go for me. I don't like his hair, his face and his size. I actually love the marine he's killing a lot more than Corax.

If you were to build a BA force centered around the battle of terra you could do NMM and those weathering techniques

How is the battle of terra involved? Did they get more gold then or something? (I honestly haven't read further than the battle of calth yet in the HH books)

Alright, my sidetracking away from my EC army has proven quite fruitful and I finished a nice amount of terrain. Now I'll go back to my EC (after christmas ;) ). In the meantime I'll start calculating possible IF, BA and other lists.

The terrain fits nicely when you put pieces touching each other, so we can play with a lot of smaller pieces, or a few big pieces :D.

I've Finished the Lightning (got a snow base also, but wasn't at hand at the time of the photo).

Also finished the scenic base of Eidolon (and nearly finished with Fulgrims). Also finished and added the daggers and volkite charger of Fulgrim, I'll post a pic when he's fully finished with scenic base.

EDIT: Ah, just noticed I forgot to put the pilot in when I took the pic, ah well

Also started experimenting with my next army, Raven Guard. I've found it's quite difficult to make the black scheme look special.

The theme will be cliche, Raven Guard at Isstvan V, so they RG will be quite weathered and damaged. The bases will be filled with rubble and all kinds of Astartes stuff, mainly belonging to RG, World Eaters and Iron Warriors. Already experimenting with bases, and I'm quite happy with the results. Filled the bases with cracked armour parts, brass, weapons, broken aquillas. vehicle parts etc. I finished 2 RG tacticals, and already the 2nd looks better than the first IMO, so I'm hoping I'll come up with more techniques and base idea's as I come along.

Please feel free to comment on the RG, and help me improve them if it's within my capabilities.

Black is very hard to do in a way that looks unique and interesting. This is mainly because shading is often what brings out the best in a model, but you can't shade since its as dark as it can possibly get. I had this same problem when I was looking at doing Iron Hands + Mechanicus, and ending up not pursuing the project.

I'm interested to see how your style evolves as your work on your Raven Guard.

Amazing work as always, dude! Your painting is always of the highest quality.

I'll have to use the Lightning as inspiration for when I paint mine.

Looking forward to seeing the Raven Guard come together :tu:

It had been a while since I played a game, but the game I played yesterday made me want to really try and get this Emperor's Children army done by now. Just silly to have a few things with just a basecoat on the table.

So I finished the daggers, volkite charger and scenic base of Fulgrim. And I'm at 90% of finishing the apothecary. After that I'll give my katana dude a bigger base (I need a model running as chaplain with boarding shield, so he fits the bill).

Also started on painting more than a basecoat on the anvillus and I'll do that and the 2nd Rhino at the same time.

The Anvillus and Lightning bases will also be done somewhere in between.

Maybe I'll make a battle report with pics next time I play a game to have some pics of the terrain, whole EC army and opponents army together, and maybe get some tips or comments :smile.:.

Anyways, here's Fulgrim, Apothecary will follow soon:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j146/MorgothNL/IMG_6790_zpscf0g4k1w.png

Edit:

Wondering about your game opinions here. My list is quite final with regards to models, but I still have some choices to make. One of the is where to put my Chaplain, and I would like to know where you guys would put him. Choices are:

- Fulgrim (fireblade) + 5 Phoenix Guard (sonic shriekers, grenade harness) in a Storm Eagle

- Eidolon + 5 Command squad (5 power swords, melta bombs) + Apothecary (artificer armour) in a Dreadclaw (arriving T1)

So he will go in one of those 2 squads. Both squad really love reroll to hit (especially the phoenix guard) but Eidolon is the one that maybe needs the help more? Him missing too much can be deadly to him, where Fulgrim will hold his ground after a crappy roll.

What do you guys think?

The chaplain is running: Boarding Shield, Artificer armour, melta bombs, power sword

Finished the first 2 Raven Guard Tactical Squads and 4 Furies :).

Paid extra attention to the bases, they all have a variety of cork, rocks, pebbles, sand and all kind of bits. Made shell casings and tried to add stuff that represents armour or weapon pieces of Raven Guard, World Eaters, Iron Hands and in the future also Night Lords as soon as I can get my hands on blue paint -.- (didn't take all the paint with me to my current location).

Wonderful painting, both on the Prettymarines and the Emomarines!

All joking aside, the EC are stupendously well done, as clean as one would expect, and the Raven Guard are rough and ready, in the best way. Not like my own painting, where grimyness is a cheap trick to make my stuff look better than it really is ;)

Thank you! I might steal those legion names ;).

Finished the Drak Fury squad and made a pic of the army so far.

Ordered the rest of the list 2 days ago so upcoming RG models will be:

1 Fire Raptor

2 Javelin Speeders with CML

12 Mor Deythan (4 combi-flamer, 4 combi-plamsa, 2 plasma, 2 meltagun)

2 Rapier Graviton Cannons

2 Rhinos

5 Recon Squad with snipers

And of course I still have Corax, who has already been basecoated and will most likely be next depending on when my order arrives.
