Casual 30K Hobby Challenge - Month 6 - February

Ah, I love the last minute loyalist completion landslide. StruManChu is due in any hour now smile.png

Present! Just gotta take some pictures. I've barely been home all week!

What's this? Inter-legion ruckus? Count me in.

I did say this month belonged to the Iron Tenth...

I'm in too. I'll lose, but I'm in. The honour of Sorrgol Clan and Shadrak 'Bloody' Meduson must be upheld! That said, of course...

OMG - I'm really looking forward to your take on Ferrus. Also, any chance of a run down on how you did the base for your Iron Father? I'm trying to do something similar for my Death Guard and can't quite get my head around it. Any pointers you can give me would be very much appreciated!

zedmeister - Those Alpha Legionnaires look fantastic! Tell me the secrets of your glorious blue!

nevindar - Really nice work on those Iron Hands. They look properly savage, and the basing is great.

Everyone Else (Atia, MoM, Twisty, ROBO, Khârn, Slips, Kurama, DimDim, chaplain mortis and others I'm sure I've missed) - Freaking GREAT stuff this month, even though some of you are dirty, dirty traitors... Onward to March!

OH OH OH!!!! I wanna join for next months vow!! A preator-future-guardian of the second legion based on the Lightning bearers made my Athrawes, I will be starting a second legion army anyway! So write me up for a character for the loyalists!!

The potential of a conflict between the many clans of the Iron Hands brings a smile to my face. Well, the parts that haven't been replaced with bionics...

It's not as finished as I would like, and it looks pretty rough and shoddy, but here is Clan Tellum's Sicaran tank, Bellerophon.

I would have hoped to have everything fixed (details, weathering, transfers, fixed the roughness of the paint, etc), but I haven't had time. This week I had to rush up to Edinburgh to say my final goodbyes to a very close and special relative in hospital, who later passed away that day. I got back yesterday and to be honest, I haven't had the motivation to pick up a paint brush since then (what with having to help plan a funeral).

Great work as always guys, and I'm eagerly looking forward to what you all come up with next month smile.png

Really sorry for your loss mate. It looks good considering you understandably haven't had the time or motivation to do all the tidying up and details! I wish my models looked like that before tidying up. Well, the 4 or so I've painted so far...

Won't be able to finish this month. Too much work left on the Contemptor and I don't want to rush it, and I also just remembered that I need to start on the Imperial Herald for March of the legions.

Curse february and its lack of days... or my procrastination. Take your pick.

Modelling-wise, the bits I needed arrived late, and without the volkite arm. Painting-wise, I've found my scheme for the Storm Legion to be quite gaudy, and needing to be changed. Freetime-wise, there isn't that much time I can free up to paint these days. I might manage to kitbash it all in one day, but that would be a miracle.

Well, I succeeded in painting my first HH model. woot.gif On time too! (Just about... ph34r.png )

May I present Brother Sergeant Sonim Arnost of the IVth Legion.

http://i.imgur.com/8dHy6dGl.jpg

To be honest, I'm pretty chuffed with him. biggrin.png He was looking a bit ropey during the base layers, but I think the washes really helped to pull him together.

C&C welcome.

White Scars done:

http://zedmeister.co.uk/resimg/hh/WhiteScars-270215.jpg

I really didn't enjoy painting these. They're a bit rough, paint wise and I couldn't get the blending to work right - I need a lot more practice. I think I should have chosen a simpler model to test the scheme on. Couple that with the fact that I didn't assemble them properly and was assembling them as I painted and they've sapped my mojo for painting the Scars for now sad.png

Zedmeister, can I ask how you painted your Alpha Legion? They look pretty damn good. Nice white on your WS too.

zedmeister - Those Alpha Legionnaires look fantastic! Tell me the secrets of your glorious blue!

I used a variant of the Forgeworld colour scheme:

- Using an airbrush, prime with Vallejo Black Polyurethane primer

- Airbrush a top down zenithal effect using the Vallejo White Polyurethane primer

- Brush on a 50/50 mix of Vallejo Game Air (VGA) Chainmail and Gun Metal

- Inkwash the model with a 50/50 mix of thinned blue and black inks

- Do a top down zenithal airbrush of VGA Silver

- Airbrush a thinned 25/75 mix of Tamiya Clear Green (25) and Clear Blue (75) on the whole model

- Airbrush the upper panels of the armour in thinned clear green

- Airbrush the lower panels of the armour in thinned clear blue

- Do a tricky top down zenithal airbrush of VGA silver mixed with a little VGA Electric Blue - this is tricky. Try to avoid speckling or a grainy finish, but you need to be pretty delicate and not drown the model in this colour

- Do a tricky top down zenithal airbrush of Tamiya Clear Blue over the silver zenithal coat. Make sure you cover the silver and blend it into the previous coats

- Then paint the details - Metallic is basecoat VGA Gun Metal, Badab black wash then paint on chips using VGA Gun Metal and then Chainmail

- Hosing is Vallejo Model Colour basalt grey and then thinned black is washed over

- Eyes are red

- Weapons are painted black with a little gun metal to give them a slight metallic sheen

- Pouches are Burnt umber

- Chip armour edges (knees, elbows, places where things catch) with chainmail and Gun Metal

- Dust on weathering powder

- Base

- Varnish

- Job done!

Still nothing :S

And it seems no one else has any problem with the picture-upload.

I usually link from Photobucket.  Is that how you're hosting your pics?

Tried Imgur (recommended by R0B0caster), a german site with which I had nor problems in november and last month and my G+ album too, but again nothing.

It would be a normal .jpg image, 850x637 by size.

Seems I'm really unlucky this month :S

I prefer the term "bio-mechanical transhuman BRO DOWWWWN", but whatever.

Apologies Raktra, I always struggle with technical terminology!

I'll launch the March thread tomorrow, sign up there and get painting, it'd be great to have you in the game.

Huw - sorry to hear your news man. Thanks for still finding the time to post your work, always a pleasure to see it.

Dallo - great job! I love the red and black stripes.

Zed - I really like you scars. It's a really tough scheme, but your free hand tribal markings on the shields look great, really set them off well.

Leoric - if you want, you can pm me, and we'll sort out you sending me a pic of you vow. I'll host it on my photobucket for you, and stick it up here when I write up. Still have to put my own stuff up anyway.

On my work- my tank remains hideously grey, but my apothecary and rapier crew are done. I'm out all day today, but will post stuff tomorrow.

Great work this month guys!

Thanks for the kind words Kor'Vesh. The hazard stripes are actually purple and black, not red and black. I wanted to do something different from the traditional yellow and black hazard stripes you normally see on Iron Warriors.

You saw the WIP pic earlier in the thread right?

  • Bitz wise, the pipes & girders come from Pegasus Hobbies Chemical Plant (Google that and you'll find lots of vendors.  It's a must buy kit for DG players)
  • The diamond plate is just cut pasticard.
  • The water is Woodland Scenics' Water Effects.  If you never used it, it's like a really thick PVA/white glue that you can shape with a toothpick.  It dries clear so you can paint a foundational color, apply the water effect and then use a complimentary glossy ink to increase the illusion of depth.  If it gets too dull you can just go over it with a glossy varnish to restore the shine on the surface.
  • I don't recall where I got the mesh.  I think I found it at a hardware store ages ago.
  • The rust effect is Model Mates Rust Yellow opaque matt - another must for DG players.  It takes some getting used to and overuse looks terrible but once you get a feel for it you'll love this & other Model Mates products.
  • The rest are just random 40K bitz, sand and whatever.

Here's a larger scale example if that helps:

For character models I do like creating that mutli-layered look which has a lot more impact in person.  It does make the model stand up a lot taller but oh well.  In the grim dark future, heroic warriors don't have time to duck but they do have time to bleed.

Cheers, -OMG

That's... Wow. No wonder they look so good. I would not have the patience for that so major props to you and your evidently mad skillz, and many thanks for taking the time to write down all of those steps. I'll be giving the XX a go at some point, maybe someday when I get myself an airbrush, so consider this saved into my Inspiration folder. biggrin.png

Thanks for the breakdown OMG! That's really helpful. I did see your WIP but just couldn't quite put it together. The Pegasus stuff looks great! I've used Water Effects for the first time this month, and found it pretty simple, so that's all good. I've not really done much in the way of 'proper' basing before, so this is really good stuff. Thanks again.

Anyway! One Spartan, one Apothecary and five Tactical Marines of the Iron Tenth complete! Pictures as promised!

This was really my first time using anything more than normal resin bases for my guys, and I can't recommend the Secret Weapons basing/scenic kits enough. I used the Instant Wetlands pack, and had these six bases (and a couple of others, because I was having so much fun!) done in a couple of hours in front of the TV. Really, really easy to use and not at all fiddly, which I'm very glad about.

I have fixed the Spartan's front door since taking these pictures, and may well return to it at some point if I ever get any good at freehand.

That's all I've got for now, but I will throw up some more pics on my Project Log at some point if anyone's interested!

Next month may well see me return to the ranks of the Traitors, but we'll have to wait and see... tongue.png

IM DONE! AHHHH

Just in time aswell lol.

here is my full pledge done:

med_gallery_82040_10175_43293.jpg

My breachers (Disclaimer: I know technically I only built 9 breachers, but I really love that little drone and thought "what better a place to use an eod/recon bot than on a ship with its tight turns. ie bot first" If you look behind him you can see i did use the other parts though on my polux conversion, because i really wanted to build him and the last breacher was the only parts i could use for him. Is that ok? Please dont hate me confused.gif )

med_gallery_82040_10175_44430.jpg

And finally my scout snipers:

med_gallery_82040_10175_16042.jpg

Now to rush to complete my March of the legions pledge!

Oh god why.....

DimDim

Looking good DimDim. I like the bullet marks on that breacher's shield, and the iddy-bitty horsie on the standard is mildly adorable. wub.png

Ahem. Manly voice time. ph34r.png

Keep up the good work guys and gals. There's still a few hours left in the month. cool.png

Dallo

Damn it DimDim, those recon marines are just too nice. What colour will your next squad of fists be? msn-wink.gif

I appreciate the sarcasm lol laugh.png

If I didnt have such bad luck with sprayable items or tools I would have already started my regular marines. But first my airbrush broke, then my white primer can wont spray, and next im gonna jump off a bridge!

Im going to go look for some white primer tommorow, and im thinking of doing a test fig with the yellow I currently have, but the idea of that colour correct forgeworld paint is just tempting me to wait and see when they release. Next month wont be much of a pledge, probably just one test fig but if I really like the outcome ill pledge more to be painted lol.
