Question though, would it be totally wrong to use my white marines as an actual Iron Hands force? Like, a clan that uses white armour but still incorporates the Iron Hand symbol?

I so want to use the FW etched brass and resin shoulder pads ohmy.png

I don't see why not! Best thing about this hobby is doing it in your own style. You could easy write some fluff ad to why your clan paint there armour white.

Just a question though would you paint the Iron Hand symbol white also? Or would you paint the inner part of the shoulder pad black, leaving a white hand and rim?

Knights looking cool Too mate.

Slow weekend for painting. Instead assembled another drop pod, stormtalon, centurion squad and a tac squad with bionics. And had a 1.000 pts game vs Tau.

I've had no inspiration for painting the last few days. Atm I'm debating if I should paint the force black as traditional Iron Hands instead.

I have completed the 3rd vow and at the same time trying out different color schemes. One of which is the standard black

I wanted to go with a martian themed base color to make the black stand out more. I still haven't decided if I want to go the codex way with white weapon casings

Tried the black scheme on a few models and am pretty pleased with it. Only thing I'm unsure of is the sharp metallic chipping. I like that it has a clean look to it, making the models look like they've seen some battles without messing up the paint job entirely. On the other hand it doesn't look as real as it can be done with sponge weathering and chipping fluids..

Warning: phone camera photo, apparently makes colors desaturated (eye lenses are actually a vivid green, not grey)

I think you've hit a solid compromise with your battle damage. The weathering from the bases will help tie in that worn look as well, so it won't be OTT. Quite a fan of that shade of black as well, looking dark but also eye-catching the same time.

Thank you brothers for your kind words and input on the chipping. I will continue to use the brush chipping on the infantry. I will probably be using a sponge on vehicles and also some rust streak effects to make them a bit more interesting than just a big black box.

Anyways here are the two marines I painted last night

Im trying out the weapon color now. Trying out the codex approved white casings first. Here's two shots with different amounts of white on the boltguns. The picture to the right is an old test scheme marine from the bits box. I think I will probably paint the bolters as seen to the right, only keeping the outmost casing white and also doing the skulls/wings/eagles in bronze instead of silver

Weapons painted and mounted. Bases painted and dusted with pigments. Only thing left on these are an oil wash on the bolters and maybe add some squad defining markings.

(The guy in the back to the left will be sergeant for another squad)

I'm not overly happy with the bases, the gravel I used was to big. I don't know if I will have to redo the bases. I'm still experimenting with the way I make them, haven't really found a way that I enjoy doing and a result I'm satisfied with.

They've worked out beautifully. The biggest compliment I can make is that you've made the Iron Hands look interesting to me, and that's something I never thought anyone could do.

With regards to the red base, have you considered the Martian Ironearth crackle paint from GW? I think that type of base effect would look great with what you're trying to acheive.

I really like the Iron Hand fluff but haven't liked to paint them. Black as black goes is a very dead color and shading/highlighting it is hard to make realistic. So to make them more interesting to paint I chose a non-black black and added the chipping to simulate both battle-damage and reflections. Also added some brass details to break up the black/silver/white scheme a bit as I didn't want to be adding to much colors to it (I've seen many use reds/blues/greens for cables and such but I don't fancy that)

I have actually tried the Martian Ironearth paint but I slabbed it directly on an unpainted base and didn't like the result. I guess the correct way to go about it is to paint the base in a darker red or brown before adding the Ironearth, then varnish it and add some drybrushing afterwards. I might have to give it another try.

What I do like about it is it creates a flat surface meaning I can finish the base before I even put the model on it

I only really found a way of painting black I could get on with about two years ago, and that was after painting for 15 years, so I can completely understand that!

You would need to whack some paint on the base first, just to give the Ironearth a texture to work over in a similar way to a primer. That type of paint can be a pain when it doesn't work, but I found I needed to put more on than I was expecting, You can be very liberal in your application. I doubt you'd even need to drybrush the results.

So... I've been on vacation for a week but I did bring my travel pack of paints:

And I managed to get a few more models painted. These have no bionics but I think they fit in well with the converted marines.

I needed a change from painting black so I started painting my second Knight. This one will be a Crusader to accompany my Paladin. I'm not sure on colors though, should I go with turquoise like my paladin or shall I paint it in a different scheme? I might keep the turquoise and add some other color maybe like black or white?

Finally back from another vacation. I will have to scribble down a 1850 force to give me some guide lines on what to paint up next. Will probably upload some pics during the days to come.

I have started working on a drop pod. I really don't like to assemble this kit. Painting it is fortunately more fun. I still have to hit it with weathering powders and some enamel rust streaks.

This is the 1850 force I'm planning to paint. Still missing in the picture is the hq techmarine, 2 more librarians for the conclave(tigurius will be a stand in for a normal librarian) and a command squad to ride in the rhino

And this is most of my assembled marine minis. I still have a few kits sitting on the shelf
