Started applying washes to the knight. I'm not sure how much weathering I want to use on him. I tried some streaks of rust on some rivets on his top carapace.

Big question is: Should I apply chipping to his armour plates or leave them as they are, only using washes to makes them look battle worn?

Sooo.. my better half is away for the weekend and I have nothing planned except for some extra work on saturday so it's going to be a weekend devoted to plastic and resin miniatures! I will try to get as much painted as possible and maybe get a game in or two.

I just ordered some conversion bits from MaxMini and I want to place an order with FW now they have the free shipping offer. I'm probably looking to get one of the superheavies, either the Fellblade or the Typhoon. I like both models but the typhoon seem better from a gaming point of view?

Another thing I considered was adding some mkIII to my Iron Hand force but it might look odd if there is a mix of older and newer marks?

Got some painting done this weekend and so I started on my cent squad:

Still some work left on these, the librarian isn't quite finished with detailing and the cents need to have some weathering done, hurricanes drilled and gravcannons still need some finishing touches

Ok, did some more painting. I've decided to change a couple of things: First I redid the martian bases, even though they gave a nice contrast to the black it didn't really fit our gaming boards so I painted them in more neutral colours. I also decided to change the bolter casing from white to black to somewhat enhance the realism of the force. I also some more weathering. Here's a close-up on the general scheme:

And most of the models that's finished/almost finished:

I'm going away on vacation tomorrow so there won't be any updated for a week or so

So it's been quiet here for a while but now I have more time for the hobby again. I started to paint some bikers. I'm trying out some alternative bits for grav guns, what do you guys think? In the background are also two dreads I repainted

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn18/mperssonbmmseifer/20151025_141939_resized_zpsceyeqhd5.jpg

This will be a 5 man command squad with apothecary and 2-3 grav guns. Next on the table unless I get sidetracked will hopefully be to assemble and paint a meltagun and combimelta marine and a drop pod to have two complete MSU melta pods.

Continued on my command squad on bikes and started on a scout squad in between drying times:

Same minimalistic and realistic colour scheme as the rest of the army. I'm still debating on their cloaks. Should I keep them grey or should I add some urban camo patterns?

And ofc, which base size for the scouts?

Long time since an update. I have a mild OCD of not finishing a project before moving on to the next one so the last couple of months I've been painting a fishy xenos army.

Anyways, I have now open my black paint bottle again and continued on my IH force. Yesterday my airbrush got some work done on a Storm Raven and a couple of Land Speeders and I started work on another librarian, this time in terminator armor

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn18/mperssonbmmseifer/20160106_220234_resized_zpsu5ny1unb.jpg

I was so eager to start painting him so I didn't bother with finding his left hand smile.png Now hoping to find something suitable in my bit boxes

I'm really not satisfied with the picture quality of my Samsung S5 so I'll try to get a lighting box set up and use my professional camera instead

Got some more work done on the librarian. Added some shadow tinting and battle damage. Still getting awful images with my camera. Hopefully I will have time tomorrow to make a lightbox and try to get some better photos

Alright! So I built a lightbox for miniature photograpy and the setup is as seen below:

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn18/mperssonbmmseifer/20160110_194329_resized_1%201_zps7ftdzpmz.jpg

I use two fluorescent lights at 20W each(comparable to 80W old style lightbulb). Unfortunately I could only get my hands on 2700K lights which are a warmwhite tone. The backdrop I use is an off-white color (I will try got get a black or greyish backdrop when I find a suitable one).

I spent an hour or so trying to get a good picture of my librarian but they all turned out not good. I took most using the aperture priority setting and tried different f-values, ISO's and light compensation. They all came out somewhat blurry.

I'm hoping someone here on the forum is more skilled than me at photography that can help me figure this out. Below is probably the picture that was the best of the bunch but still not satisfying

Time for an update!

I'm currently using my very limited spare time on painting both my Iron Hands and a Sons of Horus heresy army. That means progress will be going slow, but steady, on both armies.

Anyways, I've been eyeing the Skyhammer formation and dug through my bits box to find a bunch of metal vanguard models and some assault marines(the vanguards will be stand-ins for regular ASM until I go buy some). Here are some early wip photos of 1 of each

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn18/mperssonbmmseifer/20160403_163914_resized_zpswkevprck.jpghttp://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn18/mperssonbmmseifer/20160403_163835_resized_zpso7ntv3cc.jpg

I don't have access to my mineral spirits at the moment so most weathering will have to wait til later

I loooooooove the old metal vanguard models. Good looking army, man. I'm fairly new to weathering, and I know very little about mineral spirit. Would you mind elucidating on usage and technique?

Thank you. Yes the vanguard models are great. I managed to find 8 models lying around along with 10 metal sternguard models so I'm a happy camper. These are all from a second hand bundle I bought from a friend a couple years ago.

Regarding weathering, most of the weathering I do is done by enamel or oil washes and they require spirits to clean the brush instead of water. I use an odorless mineral spirit bought from a local DIY store. I prefer oil washes because they are easier to work with on the models. They can be 'erased' or feathered out even after they dry on the models using a brush damp with spirits making it easier to pin wash and avoid unwanted streaks or hard edges from the wash. On my Iron Hands I use AK Interactive Dust deposit and similiar products to simulate rust and dirt accumulated on the marines.

And after a couple rum & cokes my OCD set in and I had to start adding some colour to my librarians. Featuring Tiggy, the dark vengeance libby and another old school metal TDA librarian:

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn18/mperssonbmmseifer/20160404_002035_resized_zpssfrpvxpf.jpg

These will bring my libby count to 5, making a full conclave

Update:

We're getting close to the ETL and I have started to plan on what I'm going to paint and try to arrange it into legal codex entries. Unfortunately for the ETL, alot of what I need are low points like tacticals and pods. But there are a few units that will boost my pledge significantly.

A preliminary list on what I have available to paint:

10-15 Jump assault marines

5-10 heavy weapons

10-20 tacticals

5 razorbacks

4 drop pods

1 cata captain

1 cmd squad

2 chapter masters on bikes

2 imperial knights (in the mail)

1+ librarian on bike (yet to build)

3 land speeders (repaint)

1 land raider crusader (repaint)

I started assembly on some infantry, and tried to build two chapter master with bits I had lying around. Not overly satisfied but they will have to do for now:

More pre-ETL progress:

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn18/mperssonbmmseifer/20160506_173113_resized_zpsudycpppq.jpg

I've started assembly on 2 new Knights to accompany my crusader. Also finished an Assault Squad and the very point-heavy Imperial Marine. I also have a total of 4 Drop Pods that wants some color, don't know if they will be included in the vows though.

Next week 2 Stormhawks will arrive in the mail along with some bits for converting up some bike mounted characters

I don't think your photos are bad, Bmseifer, but judging from your lightbox and other equipment you care about quality and improving your skills.  So here's a link to a bunch of photography tutorials on B&C:

Looking forward to more updates!

Unfortunately I will be going away for a few days so painting will be on hold until I get back

So last update before I leave town. The bottom half is getting close to done. Metal trims need highlighting and I might add some grime or oil streaks. otherwise I'm pretty happy with the level of weathering.
