As a fellow artist myself, I must say I admire how prolific you are. Concept art is something I'm passionate about, both doing and observing, so seeing your sketches is awesome! Your creations are freakin sweet.

Thanks dude, that means a lot - I've still got a long way to go before I'm happy with this stuff, but it's good to know I'm headed in the right direction :happy.:

Not sure if you've seen this or not, but thought that if you hadn't you might want to see what sort of effect your sketches are having on the community:

Damn! That's fantastic - admittedly I've heard more about awesome peeps modelling stuff based off my illustrations than I've actually seen, but I should probably get my finger out and actually go looking :P

I've got a few more sketches to show you - I'm working on the fluff-blurbs at the moment, but unfortunately my insatiable need to get ideas into visual form is kinda trumping my will to write at the moment :happy.:

I'll mainly be doing the actual astartes units of the Legions for the immediate future - I am working on their Auxilia forces, but with the added level of detail, I want to produce 3 illustrations for each Auxilia regiment - a standard trooper, a specialist of some kind and an officer, which is much easier to simply do by building on the trooper sketch digitally, so that'll be pushed back a bit, but I will do them at some point.

Anyhow, here's an example of the Ultra's auxilia, just a standard trooper at the moment, but as said I'll build on it to produce a breacher-esque tower-shield specialist, and a cool officer who'll get herself some very roman styled stuff including a lion / mountain cat pelt :biggrin.:

Onto the Death Guard, we have the Harbinger Recon Squad, which is kinda a saboteur / sapper recon squad, basically used to try and control the enemies' movement ahead of the main Legion advance to help 'divide and conquer'. Wargear wise they'll have a pretty similar kit out to normal recons, but will start with combi-grenade launchers (except with the Imperial Militia's Gas Grenades rather than normal rounds), which can be swapped for sniper rifles / shotguns. The Sarge can take a single Phosphex canister / demolition charge, and a single Legionary can take a grenade launcher (again, with gas 'nades) or chem-flamer.

Below is the Retaliator Support Squad - pretty much just a jump-pack support squad, can take flamers / plasma guns / meltaguns / volkite chargers / grenade launchers / combi-bolters (with some kind of special corrosive round). As their name suggests, they're used as a mobile reserve to counter anything halting the main Legion advance.

And so onto the Thousand Sons - both the units below have some kind of psychic edge, as I figured they're veteran units and would be selected from among the Legionaries with decent psychic potential. First up are the Setem Storm Squad - these are members of the Pavoni and use their physiokinesis to buff their close combat abilities - don't have ranged weapons but get big Ushabti-style khopesh-glaives - in keeping with the Pavoni egocentricity, they're named after priests of death (that's the ancient egyptian origin of setem), and wear Prosperine death masks, believing themselves flawless deliverers of death.

Lastly are the Heirophant Breachers - basically breachers with combi-weapons and kine shields :laugh.:

Psychic breachers? Oh man, please tell me they can manifest some kind of big psychic force field, because thats the mental image in my head right now. And it is glorious.

nodge nodge wink wink.. EW can :D

But nice work here!!!!

Thanks everyone, glad you like them - they're not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with how they convey the detail I was trying to fit in :happy.:

Like the idea of the DG recons with Phosphex. Nice.

Yeah, I thought a saboteur-style recon squad suited the DGs' first world war mass infantry attrition vibe

Yeah the idea was for them to have a collective Kine shield, as I like the idea of the Ksons having possessing a load of specialised divisions which train their psychic ability for their particular purpose

Oooh, that reminds me, the Team Breacher had put together a specialised Death Guard Breacher squad, if ever that could be of inspiration:

You're really knocking it out of the park with your designs :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, they can take Jump Packs, so that wouldn't exactly be super practical - plus I'm not overly keen on cloaks on anything but characters (and even then, only certain ones)

Then again, different Lodges, Cults, divisions etc. would give some variety

Well now I look like an idiot :laugh.:

Seriously though, the name is from the 'Imaldhorn Dementors' for the SoH in Collected Visions - even I'm not mad enough to try and set a precedent for bridging those two universes :P

Man, can't wait to read the new Hogwarts Burns novel... :D

You're the absolute worst, you know that? :P

Anyhow, the units for the Salamanders & Raven Guard are done:

Salamanders Arbiter Siege Squad:

gallery_53779_9225_302279.jpg

Basically veteran breachers, the shield is a Drakescale version as pictured in Massacre, so will have a buff over normal boarding shields. They'll have combi-bolters of the Vertex pattern, and will have 'ignis' rounds (basically prototype inferno shells), and will have some sort of boost when they're claiming an objective.

Salamanders Scoria Xenocide Squad:

gallery_53779_9225_883176.jpg

The Pyroclasts' unit blurb mentions that the Salamanders don't use Destroyers apart from a small cadre reserved for xenocide operaions - those are these guys. They won't get rad weapons, but they'll have chem-flamer stuff & Phosphex (because fire) and the incendiary missiles the Domitar get on their launchers.

Raven Guard Deliverer Terminator Squad:

gallery_53779_9225_843825.jpg

You all know about these lot - they get Raven's Talons & combi-bolters to start, the latter can be swapped for volkite chargers / rotor cannon, 1 in 5 can take twin ravens talons / heavy flamer / reaper autocannon / some form of special whip, plus they'll have appropriate special rules

Raven Guard Shadow Warden Talon:

gallery_53779_9225_63728.jpg

Corax's bodyguard - they'll be available in units of 1-6, and can be taken as a retinue for Corax or as a separate HQ choice of 1-3, where they are independant characters. Wargear & rules will reflect their dissapearing act

Thanks peeps :smile.:

I really like all the new drawings, but I feel like the Salamander breacher could have more going on with his shield.

Yeah I purposely left the shield blank as it's supposed to be the boarding shield I mentioned in the blurb below (this)

Loving the new sketches, it really helps flesh out the legions at least in my headcanon.

Have you done the IVth Legion yet or are they still to come? :-)

Yup, the IVth Legion's stuff is on this page (notice anything about the order in which I've been doing the Legions? :P ) - that said, whilst I like the look of the Tartaros sketch I did for them, my idea for the Archon termies has evolved somewhat, so I'll probably do another illustration to reflect that soon-ish
