Well, the Shattered Legions continue to flourish. And thanks to Forge World, I got to add a legion I've long loved; the Thousand Sons. Whether they become the main focus of the army with the other legions around them happens, I'm not sure. Just playing it by ear, but red is a colour I've never really painted before and it's pretty nice.

 

I'm not overly happy with the paint job (unfortunately, I had to redo the red by hand as the airbrush red I used was a little too Word Bearers for me), but for a first go, I'm happy with it. I've got a squad of 10 built up and ready for painting alongside another 6 Ultramarines and 5 more White Scars and after that, I'll be painting up 2 Quad Mortars Rapiers in Thousand Sons colours.

 

Here's some pics, hope you like. There's also a picture of how my squads are going to end up, various legions in one squad. I'm not going to go too overboard and add marines of all the Legions. I'll likely just add some Dark Angels in eventually and leave it at that.

Hmm, having a bit of a hobby dilemma atm. I've sorta settled on a Shattered Legions army. And I told myself the army would have the majority of minis being from one legion, with a few others adding in troops etc to flavour.

Currently, I can't decide which legion will be top dog. I've so far painted various marines for Ultramarines, Thousand Sons, White Scars and Imperial Fists. The Fists I'm pretty sure won't be that choice (as much as I just love painting yellow...). I think in my head the White Scars come third, even though I love them. I guess it really boils down to Thousand Sons and Ultramarines. Personally, I prefer the Thousand Sons. Always loved their background, Magnus, anything to do with magic etc. When it comes to painting though, I feel much more confident with the Ultramarines and I think I do a better job of the blue than the red (they look better than my crummy pictures make out!). I've painted a lot of tacticals lately, so I have some Jetbikes and 2 Quad Mortar Rapiers for the TS to paint, and also a squad of the Suzerains for the UM. Also waiting on some of the XVI transfers that I can chop down for my TS to give something to add t the armour.

Other than that, here's some shots of a few marines from each legion, and some combined squads (which I gather is how the Shattered Legions will play out, with the majority legion per squad using their rules).

I do like my Thousand Sons, I just can't help but think they look a tad more amateur-ish than the Ultras do. Then again, as I say, I've never painted read before! Just worry that the weathering etc looks a tad off on them.

I can imagine that rule being taken off for the likes of Thousand Sons and White Scars

 

And you've got some really nice models there, I would be pleased to paint red as well as you, and Thousand Sons are always great, so good choice :P

I'm certain they will get something like IH for their praetor, or all characters can buy a mastery level x pts.

A quick update; I've finally finished my first Thousand Sons tactical squad. I'd been waiting on some Sons of Horus transfers to hack apart. The problem with painting up a Legion with very little recent official artwork is that they could go either way with it. I've plumped for something akin to my Ultramarines (hey, they're all gonna be in a Shattered Legions force, makes it look all a bit more uniform). I've used the Ultramarines tactical arrows on the right shoulder pad where possible, and chopped the I off a SoH XVI transfer to put on their knee pads. Unfortunately, I've been (and still am) having difficulty sourcing white XVI transfers without having to buy an entire transfer sheet so it's taking it's time.

 

I'm happy enough with them, though the red isn't particularly bright. It's very dull, sort of between the dark Word Bearers red and the bright Blood Angels red. I may have gone a bit heavy handed with the weathering powder, but I guess when you're fighting in the ruins of your homeworld, you're going to have a bit of dust on you (sort of inspired by the Word Bearers chaplain whose armour turns slowly to grey with the dust from Monarchia). I keep looking back at them and really loving them one minute, and then being unsure of them the next though.

 

A few snaps then of the squad, also showing the transfers. At the end is the next squad I'm working on, a Praetor on Jetbike and 3 extra Jetbikes. He's not particularly 'blingy' for a HQ, but I always liked the idea that on a jetbike, you wouldn't necessarily be wearing you're finest head crest for fear of it snapping your head back at extreme speeds!

Funny, I never really thought about it before, and no-one has ever mentioned it. However, you're the second person in a day to say the same thing, so it sorta gave me a kick up the backside to finally do it, so I ordered myself a drill online a bit ago :-)

You're TS sorcerer is particularly gorgeous, Athrawes. Wish I had the modelling skills to do something similar, I've never used green stuff for anything other than concealing gaps.

I really love the matte look of yours, While I'm having loads of fun with my attempt at metallic red (and hope it's turned out pretty effective), part of the reason I'm so happy with it was that my matte red was awful.
