So I've been intending to start a WIP thread for a while to help keep me motivated and I finally got around to doing it.

After finally settling on a Mechanicum force for my first AoD army I actually started painting some models for the ETL. I picked up the Taghmata Army List in September and decided to focus on the Ordo Reductor because they are awesome. :tongue.:

As the title suggests, the backstory I've been developing in my head has them as survivors of of either Istvaan III or Istvaan V. I'm leaning more towards Istvaan V as Caleb Decima is kind of the iconic Istvaan III Ordo Reductor survivor. Haven't really delved into how they survived too much and that's kind of where I'm at on that.

Ultimately, I'd like to run some legion allies with them but I  am torn between shattered Iron Hands and Black Shields. Iron hands are easy to work into the Istvaan survival but I'm leaning very heavily towards Black shields. Not sure if it will even be possible to take Black Shield allies but I guess we'll find out once book 6 comes out. Which is probably when I'll make my decision since it will have rules for both.

Anyway, enough rambling… Here's some pics of what I've got so far.

YESSSS!!!

I love your scheme @_@_@_@_@_@_@

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. :smile.:

Yes, love the colours, white mechanicum is something I may have to steal from you :whistling:

Be my guest. We can always use more Mechanicum around here. :biggrin.:

That white is so crisp and clean. Almost too clean. Any plans to do some weathering on these guys robots?

Agreed. Much too clean. :laugh.:  I'm planning on trying weathering at some point. Since I like to imagine them fighting a guerrilla campaign I'd expect them to be pretty weathered and worn. I've been trying the sponge technique out on some marines but I haven't quite got the hang of it yet... Also not sure exactly what color I should use for contrast on white armor. Black seems too strong so I've been playing with a dark grey but it's doesn't look quite right to me.

Great start! How did you do the metal paint?

Thank you! For the bronze I start with a base of Boltgun and hit it with a wash of black ink. Then I do a heavy dry brush of Shining Gold and then wash with Devlan Mud. I think both shining gold and devlan mud have changed names in the current range? It's been a while since I've done any painting prior to starting these guys...

You could always try your hand with some weathering powders. I have some myself but haven't tried my hand with them yet.

I think I'm going to try the sponge technique for a chipping effect and then try some weathering powders on top of that.

Nice work on the metallics.

Thanks! :smile.:

+1 to the weathering on the white. All the metallics have a weathered look, and the contrast is a little to strong with the stark white.

But your metallics, your metallics are on point, good sir.

I'm playing around with chipping and once I get that down I'm planning on trying some weathering powders. So stay tuned. :happy.:

What do you think about adding some slight verdigris to the bronze?

I didn't get a lot of painting done last week due to having people in town for the holiday, but here's a couple of shots of the pretty much complete Venator.

And I've been messing around with some chipping, but I'm still working on how to make it look like chipped paint and not just like some idiot attacked it with a sponge....:unsure.:

Anyway... I tried two different colors, one is dark grey mixed with boltgun and the other is a brown mixed with boltgun. Unfortunately, due to my crummy camera and lighting they look pretty similar in these pictures.

Grey:

I'm thinking the grey looks better. What do you guys think? Any tips on sponging? Better color suggestions?

Thanks for looking! c&c appreciated.

Another attempt using a darker grey and using the brush to make some of the chips look bigger. Pic was taken on my phone so not the best quality...

What do you guys think?

lookin really good

Thanks!

I'm pretty pleased with how it's looking. I'm especially pleased with the red stripe instead of red on the fronts of the wings and on the flaps as I originally tried. Still trying to figure out the chipping but it's starting to look better. :smile.:

This are stunning bud. You hava a beautiful white. If it helps at all I'm having the same issues as you when it comes to doing damage over a white. It's hard to make it look like damage as opposed to it being attacked with a Sponge.

Thank you! I've tried 3 different colors and haven't really liked any of them that well. I went back to the grey I was using originally and I'm going to highlight the bigger spots with a metallic. So we'll see how that looks. If you figure out the secret with your Scars let me know.

  • 1 month later...

A little look at what I'm currently working on for the Loyalty and Treachery event.

That crisp white with the aged mechanical parts is great! I foresee shells hitting and opponents crying in the future.....

Thanks! I can't wait to put this beast on the table. :biggrin.:

So I finally got it all painted and assembled and I'm beginning the weathering process. I'm trying something new and using an oil wash to kind of grime it up a little before I begin the chipping. Hopefully you can see it in these pictures.

I think it turned out pretty good. If you look closely you can see in some spots where I apparently didn't use enough varnish to seal it before applying the wash and the paint is pulling up a bit. I think that just adds to the worn look though so overall I'm pretty pleased.

Ugh I have a minotaur to paint in a similar scheme, but its already been assembled. I'm dreading it lol.

I think you need to go back and weather all your models; they're pretty flat as pure white tends to be, but is compounded by the lack of highlights and shading on any other colours. The avenger shows that just a bit of weathering can really add some contrast and make your red and white pop

That is looking very smart! Love seeing these. Only white mechanicum army I have ever seen.... need more robots though

I have a white mechanicum thread in the forge #totalselloutmoment :tongue.:

The minotaur is looking very nice, are you going to be using red stripes and stuff on the sides ?

Also, for chipping, have you considered a kind of metallic silver with heavy agrax earthshading (to give it a kind of damaged metal aspect), which then has a very dark grey between the metallic and white parts ? Difficult to do on small models, but the planes and super heavies have enough space to go crazy.

I've tried to do a little gimp work of what I meant to illustrate :
