Father Mehman
Right then, Forge World released their updated colour scheme for the Thousand Sons and it looks great. I've had a matte version of the scheme picked out for a year but never thought about doing a metallic one. Anyway, on another thread, someone (I forget who) emailed them and they responded with the metallic recipe and a matte recipe. The problem I have is that Forge World says to use an airbrush to apply their new paints with- something that I am loathe to do. I figure that it won't be too hard to brush it on, as I have done before, but my questions are about their paint range vs GW's. In the emailed recipe, they say to spray the model with Iron Hands Steel but to leave the bottoms of the plates black. Fair enough. Is Iron Hands Steel the same as Leadbelcher or is it lighter/darker? They then said to highlight the tops of the plates with Runefang Steel. Easily done with a drybrush or feathering technique. After those steps, a few thinned coats of clear red are to be applied. Would Tamiya Clear Red work instead? I ask these questions because it's a lot easier to go to my local hobby store and get both GW and Tamiya paints instead of ordering from Forge World. Thanks for any help you can provide EDIT- Name change and Tag update Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317548-mehmans-thousand-sons-wip/ Share on other sites
Father Mehman
In response to myself, I believe I have found a solution that works. Maybe. On Monday, I'll have my wife pick up some Tamiya Clear Red from town and then it's experimenting time ! Alright, here's the recipe that might work for metallic red power armour: Undercoat Chaos Black Basecoat Abaddon Black / Leadbelcher (50/50) Feather Layer Leadbelcher Feather Highlight Leadbelcher / Ironbreaker (50/50) Apply thinned Clear Red (x2-3) Line Wash Nuln Oil Edge Highlight Runefang Steel There we go. It looks good in my mind so hopefully it will work out on a test model. If not, I'm sure it will be a matter of tweaking the metallics around. Mind you, this recipe is somewhat darker than Forge World's depiction of the Thousand Sons as I've never liked Candy Apple Red. Maybe I should explain what I mean by "Feather Layering / Highlighting". We all understand drybrushing, yes? Ok, a few of you don't but that's alright. Do a search on your search engine of choice or YouTube and you'll find out. Anyway, the technique is repeated light drybrushings but instead of hitting raised areas, you're looking at covering a surface. You're also bound to hit raised areas so that's a plus, too ! I might just make this thread my Thousand Sons' blog. Stay tuned for more. Father Mehman
Huzzah, fellow gentlemen and ladies! Welcome to my Thousand Sons thread! There will hopefully be pictures posted later of a test model to show the red painting scheme trial. If that goes well, I will endeavour to mooch another Betrayal at Calth box set from my family and also order some Mk IV pauldrons. That may take some time, I'm afraid. Not to fear because there is much work to be done in the interim. What work, you ask? Well, a lot! Here's a list: Find an appropriate designation for these Thousand Sons. I haven't a clue as to what structure the Legion uses except that they have ten divisions called...something. I forget easily. The tenth division was destroyed somehow and now there are only nine. Maybe, to play it safe, my force will be a Chapter. I welcome your thoughts! Try to figure a naming convention. I know, I know: Egyptian. That's a grand idea but I think Arabic naming conventions would be proper as well. There are only so many ways you can say "Ra". Work on some background and try to set up the scene for my DIY Unforgiven Chapter to take over a few thousand years later. Anyway, any input you have would be of great help to me. Think of it as a team exercise. Cheers ! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317548-mehmans-thousand-sons-wip/#findComment-4262787 Share on other sites

Athrawes
Best of luck on the Metallic Thousand Sons, from experience doing touch-ups on my Sons, You should be able to apply the clear by brush no problem. Your coats will just need to be extremely thin to avoid pooling and streaking. Anything, even minor like that will show up super clearly because of the reflective light-catching pigment in the metallic undercoat. Definitely doable if you are driven. I look forward to seeing them Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317548-mehmans-thousand-sons-wip/#findComment-4310943 Share on other sites
