I realized that most of stuff on this thread is related to space piracy in some way; 30k Blackshields (focus on piracy), now Red Corsairs (which is where the Malevolent Class Dreadnought belongs) and now a Dark Eldar count as army of bloodthirsty steampunkish pirates. So I'm going to change the title and update the op with link when I get stuff done.

Focusing on the DE dudes right now, as is only the "easy" way I can do hobby at the moment. Names and behavior would stem from the "Treasure Island" novel. They will ride Raiders and Ravagers because I :censored:   airships :tongue.:

This also gives me free range for conversions, and I plan to have a Tantalus as a centerpiece of my army, and rules wise, they'll be a piratical wych cult (I need to think a name for it yet).

Old stuff:

Hello brothers; in an attempt to keep me motivated, I'll start a modeling (and hopefully painting aswell) thread to try to keep me motivated

I'll start with my take on The Nemean Reaver (aka Black Zarono, maybe) which will lead my raiding party of Black Shields. He is still very WIP, and the head is only blue-tacked. I have also generic bare heads, raptor heads, Mk II, III, IV & V and some zerker heads too. Not sure about this one but I thinks is growing on me.

But enough words, here is Black Zarono:

Hope you like it, even with the bad quality pics.

I'm leaning more and more towards an Ashen Claw force, fluff and colors are really interesting. Nothing set in stone yet, but almost definitely I'm going for them. I will like to introduce you Sergeant Terminator Dhraav. Nothing too fancy but I like the outcome.

Not really happy with him, but my skills are rusted (not painted in six years if my memory is ok, which is unlikely) and I've never been more than a mid tier tabletop painter.

Also not sure if I like to do Ashen Claws (fluff is amazing, but not really fond on the scheme) or a custom pirate warband.

C&C very welcome!

For not having painted in 6 years he looks he looks quite alright, the red is a bit uneven though. If you're not fond of the scheme I'd say that you ditch it, painting an whole army in a scheme you don't really like would probably not be fun and could kill your enthusiasm for the project.

Thanks SickSix!

Back from the warp for a while. Spawning into the mortal realms is more difficult each time, but I found some time for the hobby at the moment.

MYRMIDONS

A Blackshield warband with no now allegiances, who focus on infantry and heavy weaponry. They're suspected successors/splinters from the Iron Warriors while some scholars argue that they come from the Death Guard or even the (oh, the heresy!) Ultramarines!

Whoever they are, what inspired me was the roman tactics and aesthetics (sp?) so expect heavy infantry and warmachines with "light" Alae and Auxilia support (cavalry in the form of bikes/jetbikes among other stuff).

Still deciding the iconography and symbols, but the colors are set: black, bare metal, red and yellow.

So here's the list I'm working on:

HQ

Reaver Lord - Halo blade, iron halo, rad-g, jetbike - 235

Siege Breaker Consul  - Boarding shield - 105

ELITE

Apoth det. - x3 Apothecaries - 135

Techmarine cov. - 1x Techmarine, conversion beamer, x4 Automata w/flamers - 113

Quad launcher - Phosphex canister - 80

TROOPS

Siege Breaker Sqd - x10, 2x Meltagun, Vexila - 265

Siege Breaker Sqd - x10, 2x Meltagun, Vexila - 265

Siege Breaker Sqd - x10, 2x Meltagun, Vexila - 265

FAST

Skyhunter Sqd - x3 Jetbikes, x3 MB, PW, PC - 190

HEAVY

Leviathan Dread - CML, g-bombard, phosphex, ceramite , HFs - 345

TOTAL 1998

Pretty obvious deployment; one apothecary for each Siege Sqd,  Siege Consul in one Siege Sqd, Lord with the Jetbikes flanking. The Leviathan escorted by the techmarine and automatas. Go forth and die (or hopefully kill stuff) and the Quad either advancing near the Levy or in a flank. Everything is S5 T5 (Lord is S8 T6 2+ 4++).

THE POOR DRAWN BATTLEPLAN

BRB LLLALL a [[[L]]] a LLLALL LLASLL [Q]

  BB LLLLL     a  T  a    LLLLL   LLLLLL

R=Lord B=jetbike L=siege legionary A=apoth  a=automata [[[L]]]= Levy S=Consul [Q]=quad launcher T=techmarine

If you want to comment on the list, please do it here.

But enough words! It is time for some pics. Don't expect much, but this is my afternoon tinkering:

Cheers mate! :biggrin.: still have to finish it.

This Saturday I took a day off and went a little bit painting, with an awful outcome. The first :censored: moment was just after priming. My Vallejo blue exploded (I guess Tzeench's fault/just as planned) ending with 1/3 of the (unused bottle) all over my palette ¬_¬

13600067_615775295256464_893531638327333

I managed to salvage a bit of paint, but whatever.

With only a couple minis build yet, I took Brother Bhima as a test model. Yes Tzeentch casted misfortune over him, and the results were not amazing.

Still very WIP as you can see (also I forgot to take pictures of him on a more advanced state).

And sorry for the pics quality. I will try to bring some real updates this Wed/Thu when I have some time (which is good for you, because you have at least three days without your eyes bleeding).

Not really happy with how Brother Bhima resulted, this time I tried another one, following Apologist's tutorial (more or less) in his thread Officia Mostrosa (you need to check his awesomeness!).

Meet Unknown Brother here.

This time I'm happier with the results, and can definitely see getting there. Ironically looks better in photo than IRL, but whatever.

Hope you like it.

Two more and the squad will be completed and ready for painting. While I know the pain scheme for my future chimeriae blackshields, still deciding if I want to do Ashen Claws or diy space pirates. Sekeers are here to stay tho.

Thanks for the kind words brother. I'm willing to see some stuff painted aswell lol

Hopefully, Wed will be paint stripping day and some painting (new test scheme lol) as i'm leaning more and more to a custom pirate warband as my original idea -before i was tainted by the awesomeness of the Ashen Claws- and want to try some new (to me) painting techniques (will ofc will end ruining a model but whatver).

Cheers mate!

  • 2 weeks later...

Little news on the blackshield front. I managed to strip the Seeker Squad (previously World Eaters tacticals) and started some paint, the first one was pretty unlucky so it got to the alcohol pool to get striped again. Painting in hot weather is a bit frustrating, because paint dry up pretty fast -I even use a crappy-cheap wet palette but still. Almost give up and start to do something else (build up more marines, or the leviathan, or a contemptor, whatever, really), but finally decided to focus on the paint scheme. As name suggests, my intention was going with black armor (or black metal), but the result was too dark, and too close to the Deathwatch/=][= (and you know, death to false Emperor!) so I decided to go with Codex Grey armor and black shoulder pads with some color details for pouches, grenades, cables, etc.

So yet, another test model. Please, focus only in the front leg.

grey_test.jpg?w=620&h=827

Yay! double posting!

Still too hot to do any painting, and I don't have a lot of time lately due modern day slavery, but today I managed to continue something started a couple of months ago, a custom/scrap walker, meant to 'count as' a contemptor mortis.

The excuse here is that the Blackshields are low on resources and have to scavenge/salvage anything to survive (besides that I don't love very much contemptors, they are ok but I don't picture them for space pirates, not so much at least, and I love to convert stuff), so here is the start of my Morty.

img_20160805_220620245_hdr.jpg?w=620&h=8

This is just a mock-up test and nothing is glued yet, just to see if everything fits.

img_20160805_220808362.jpg?w=620&h=827

A side view from the cockpit, just to be sure that the pilot (and his missing head) will fit well in the enclosed canopy.

img_20160805_224512828.jpg?w=620&h=827

My mind was going crazy here, with intentions to put radars and monitors in the ceiling enclosed cockpit abobe, then I realized I was out of space: It was the screens or the head. Alternatively I thought about pushing the screens forward on the ceiling, but was too unrealistic for the marine to reach the control panels, so I decided to give the bug a more primitive/orky feel, and cut a window (freehand, no measurements, no nothing, just my hobby knife and my instinct; fortunately for me, it turned ok-ish, because if not, a whole hour of planning and cutting would be wasted) in a SdkFz style.

Front view of the cockpit and the driver.

img_20160805_225114192_hdr.jpg?w=620&h=8

And the right panel finally glued.

img_20160805_225232360.jpg?w=620&h=827

Here’s a mock-up with a dreadnought bit which would work as a weapon mounting so you can picture where I’m going. The goal is to give the walker a Metal Gear-esque feeling and it would have shielded chicken legs, cables, dual Kheres Assault Cannon, Havoc Launcher, smoke launchers, searchlight and extra bits like tools, tow cable and whatever I can cram into it, if I can find enough space! So much to do...

Would love to read any criticism, cheers!

A little update on the Mortis/Rex. Today is leg day -you don’t miss leg day!- so I started with some leg work. It took me almost three hours and about three different leg variations (standard Sentinel legs, defiler legs, and the last one here, until I realized it was 01:00 AM and decided to stop because I need to feed myself and rest a bit.

img_20160808_010942366.jpg?w=620&h=465

Here you can see the leg concept, the upper part is a modified defiler leg, the middle section is the Sentines upper leg and the bottom part/shin is made of 2 rhino exhausts (I used a dremel here, saves a lot of time) connected by  the two things that holds the havoc missile launcher, cutted and glued (but very lightly, so I can still work on the separated leg parts).

img_20160808_011206361.jpg?w=620&h=465

Rough mock up to get a general feeling. There’s still work to do; filling, sanding, glueing and add some armor plates and detail; but I think I’m in the good direction :)

I already thought Metal Gear when I saw the first pictures of your dread before I scrolled done some more to where you're talking about exactly that. Great job capturing the vibe of your reference. I'm keenly interested in how this turns out.

Thanks Isengrin :D

That started as a little project, which in my mind was a simple conversion, but as the thing evolved, it got more and more complicated. I spend most of the time trying to figure out how to do things like movable canopy, working legs and how to add extra detail without making the thing look messy.

The next step will be finishing the leg (not sure how to do the feet yet), do the other one and the hip, which is still a mystery to me.

Cheers :)

"METAL GEAR...?!"

...

Sorry, I had to ;)

Like Isengrin, I got the Metal Gear Rex vibe before I even saw your explanation, so you seem to be doing alright ;) One piece of advice, though: While I like your kitbashed pilot, I think the Marine head clashes with the Eisenkern body, mostly because it seems too clunky and badly proportioned. I'd either try to use a Space Marine torso or turn the pilot into a non-Astartes auxiliar with a different head. Just my two cents...

Thanks Kraut ^_^

I was thinking a Scout torso maybe? First test I did with a SM body wasn't very appealing, which can be because of the backpack (and the interior of the cockpit is very small, which can be a problem for an astartes without support). If not I have plenty of Eisenkern heads, with and without helmet. As the pilot would be removable (and I intend to make one standing outside with binoculars, like doing a recce job (looking for targets) as a mini vignette) is a problem to me the lack of backpack. Or maybe do a small one, like if he was in recon armor, which is the main idea.

Anyway, will try different versions of him, and thanks for the tip!
