Thanks! Yes, Simon certainly has a skeptical look.

I recently got in a game using my Nostroman 9th Traitor Guard. Since we no longer have Traitor Guard rules, I used the Nostromans as counts-as Guard using the Combined Arms Detachment. The forces of Chaos were hired to destroy the foul loyalist Corpse Worshippers, the Salamanders.

Here is an excessively long army list for the Nostroman 9th

Spoiler

Being a Renegades and Heretics Chaos Militia Brigade featuring apostate artillery teams, infidel infantry, lawless Leman Russes, and various and sundry other Horrors of the warp.

Long ago there was a noble family, the house of Nightfall. They lived in an age of peace and stability established by their world's ruler. Their ruler was Konrad Curze, the fair and just lord of the garden planet Nostramo. And then one day, a corrupt and weak emperor sent an assassin to slay the Lord Curze. The vile assassin succeeded. The emperor then destroyed the paradise that was Nostramo. House Nightfall managed to escape. But since that day they have never forgotten. Vengeance upon the emperor will be theirs!

NOSTROMAN 9TH TRAITOR GUARD MERCENARY COMPANY, "HELL'S HORDE,"

CHARACTERS
☆ Renegade Commander Dneghra Nightfall, counts-as Castellan, powerfist, plasma pistol 55), Grand Strategist Enhancement (15)=70
Renegade Commander Buzzsaw, counts-as Castellan, powerfist, plasma pistol=55
● Special Rule: Leader--Dneghra and Buzzsaw are character leaders who can join certain units
● Special Rule--Voice of Command: During my command phase, Dneghra and Buzzsaw can issue an order to two regiment units within 6 inches. A regiment unit is basically any unit that is not a Ratling or a vehicle. This order remains in effect until my next command phase.
● Special Ability--Grand Strategist Enhancement: Dneghra can issue an order to a third regiment unit within 6 inches.
● Special Ability--Get back in the fight!:  Dneghra and Buzzsaw's squads can shoot during a turn in which they fell back
● Special Ability--Senior Officer: Dneghra and Buzzsaw's squads' ranged weapons have the "Sustained Hits 1" rule.
Like many in the Nostroman 9th, Renegade Commander Dnegrah Nightfall was raised on stories of the good old days when the trains ran on time and Conrad Kurzed kept the streets safe from criminals. Her family is one of the oldest houses within House Nightfall.  She and her brethren are bitter at the Imperium's unjust assasination of Night Haunter.
Dnegrah Nightfall has lead the Nostroman 9th Mercenary Regiment for decades. She is grizzled and fierce veteran. She and the 9th travel the verse, selling her mercenaries' skills to any non-Imperium clients with enough coin. Dnegrah's ancestors were Nostroman nobility, the noble House of Nightfall. They feared Curze but respected his ability to establish order. They seek to avenge Curze's death at the hands of the hypocritical  Emperor.
Despite her patrician upbringing, Dnegrah is a member of the Workers' Faction within House Nightfall's ruling Council of Thirteen. She is (mostly) loyal to that faction's leader, Night Lords Chaos Lord Saris Fleshscape. Dnegrah's 9th Regiment sometimes aids Lord Saris by performing clandestine missions for him, missions he would rather the other council members not know about.
Renegade Commander Buzzsaw is Dnegrah's lover. He won her affection through his devotion to Chaos and strict personal code of honor.

Enforcer Annika, counts-as Chaos Commissar, bolt pistol, power weapon=30
● Special Rule: Leader--Commissar Annika is a leader unit that can join certain units
● Special Rule--Voice of Command--During my command phase, Commissar Annika can issue 1 order to a regiment unit. But he can only issue the Duty and Homor! and Fix Bayonets! orders. This order remains in effect until my next command phase.
● Special Ability--Summary Execution: once per round at the start of any phase, Commissar Annika can shoot a friendly battle-shocked infantry unit model within 12 inches. That cowardly model is removed and the squad is no longer battle-shocked.
● Special Rule--Political Overwatch: if another officer is present in the unit, the unit can re-roll battle shock tests
An Enforcer is  a "Chaos Commissar" who uses fear and summary executions to ensure the Traitor Guard's obedience.
Enforcer Annika is a feared symbol of House Nightfall's Chaos Commisariat, also called "Enforcers." She is always willing to use summary execution on laggards.      However she does have a dark secret. Her twin sister, Akinna, defected to the Imperium. Ironically, Akina now serves as a Commissar in the loyalist Tallarn 23rd Light Regiment. Only she and her lover, Renegade Commander Buzzsaw, know this secret. If it were discovered the Council of Eight would quickly have her executed. Enforcer Annika hopes to one day meet and kill the traitor Akinna upon the field of battle.

Harrowmaster Chillgibber, 3rd Squad Commanding, with his Platoon Command Squad, Counts-As Cadian Command Squad with 5 troopers=65
Squad loadout:
• Harrowmaster Chillgibber with powerfist and auto pistol
• Adjujant 10011101 with powerfist and autopistol
• Doctor Bonesaw with autopistol and medi-pack
• Vox Officer Heronvar with autopistol and Master vox
• Corporal Crull with autopistol and regimental standard
Harrowmaster Zhukov, 3rd Squad Commanding, with his Platoon Command Squad, Counts-As Cadian Command Squad with 5 troopers=65
Squad loadout:
• Harrowmaster Zhukov with powerfist and autopistol
• acting Master Sergeant (really an Enfircer) Nostramo with powerfist and autopistol
• Doctor Baltasar with autopistol and medi-pack
• Comms Officer Ryu with autopistol and Master vox
• Master Sergeant Warptouch with autopistol and regimental standard
● Special Rule: Leader--Harrowmasters Chillgibber and Zhukov are character leaders who can join various units
● Special Rule--Voice of Command--During my command phase, Harrowmasters Chillgibber and Zhukov can issue 1 order to a regiment unit. This order remains in effect until my next command phase.
● Special Rule--Nostramo Stands!: Harrowmasters Chillgibber and Zhukov grant their unit cover if it is on an objective
● Special Rule--Master Vox: Officers in the unit can issue their orders to an eligible unit up to 24 inches away
● Special Rule--Medkit: during my command phase if this unit is below starting strength then the medic can heal D3 models, excluding characters
● Special Rule--Regimental Standard: add 1 to the objective control of each model in the unit
Harrowmaster Chillgibber was a communications officer in the Nostroman 9th. He resented the fact that he was always in the rear with the paymasters helping to coordinate the fighting. So one day he chopped off his arm and attached a large chainsaw. After that his wish was granted and he is always sent to the front where the fighting is thickest. He excelled in this role and was eventually rewarded with the rank of Harrowmaster.
Harrowmaster Zhukov is not a bright man. But, everyone thinks he is. His only friend in life is the Dust Witch.

The Dust Witch, counts-as Nork Deddog, Ripper Gun, Huge Knife=60
● Special Rule--Head Butt: each time the Dust Witch's unit is selected to fight, select 1 enemy unit within engagement range. Roll 1d6. On a 2 to 5 that unit suffers D3 mortal wounds and on a 6 that unit suffers D3+3 mortal wounds.
● Special Rule--Loyal Protector: The Dust Witch must join a command squad.
● Special Rule--Ogryn Bodyguard: The Dust Witch confers a 4+ feel no pain save on any officers in her unit.
The Dust Witch and Commissar Zhukov, like many members of the Nostroman 9th, were once loyalists. Over time they advanced through the ranks of the Elysian 112th Drop Regiment. Commissar Zhukov was promoted from Cadet Commissar to normal-grade Commissar and the Dust Witch served his dedicated bodyguard.
After the two met, she began giving the new Commissar advice. It was good advice. Go left at the intersection, we can set up an ambush there. Watch Trooper Kvet, she is going to frag you. We should take the resupply point rather than link up at the rendezvous. The Elysians thought it was Commissar Zhukov who came up with all these brilliant insights. And he became respected and popular among Elysian officers and commissars. But it was all the Dust Witch. She was never particularly fond of the Imperium. She still harbored resentment over being drafted. Over the years, the Ogryn had groomed a small company of Elysians who were similarly disaffected. She, that is to say, Zhukov, used their influence and managed to get assigned as rear guard over a loyalist space port. One evening the squad of erstwhile Elysians blew up the space port and escaped in a captured craft with a coerced navigator in tow.
Over the years Zhukov, the Dust Witch, and the renegade Elysians became fierce and successful pirates, causing wanton destruction and getting rich off of plunder. One day Zhukov, the Dust Witch, and the former members of the 112th Elysians came in contact with a small raiding force from House Nightfall. The Nostroman raiding force was quite impressed with these pirates and offered them a job. Zhukov and the Dust Witch accepted and their band began working with House Nightfall as subcontractors. Eventually, they were hired on a permanent basis. The pirates became members of House Nightfall's 9th Regiment of Traitor Guard (Alpha Company, 5th Squad). Commissar Zhukov and the Dust Witch remained their leaders.
The Nostroman 9th's leaders have also fallen for Zhukov's and the Dust Witch's ploy. As did the Elysian leadership, they believe that Zhukov is the brains and the Dust Witch is the brawns. She is taking advantage of this. She has realized that House Nightfall's leadership is far more divided than that of the Elysians. And she is beginning to develop a network of informants and agents. Her goal is to gain an element of power within House Nightfall by playing the various factions against each other.

Kholek, Ogryn Bodyguard, Bullgryn Maul, Huge Knife=40
● Special Rule--Loyal Protector: Kholek must join a command squad.
● Special Rule--Ogryn Bodyguard: Kholek confers a 4+ feel no pain save on any officers in his unit.
Kholek is a Chaos Ogryn. In the Traitor Guard, Chaos Ogryns often serve as officers' bodyguards. Their brute strength and melee weapons are turned against anyone who endangers them or who questions their authority. Kholek's large bulk can often serve to protect nearby Traitor Guard troopers from enemy fire.

Reaver, Leman Russ Tank Commander Battlecannon, lascannon, 2 multimeltas, heavy stubber, hunter killer missile=235
● Special Rule: Voice of Command: During my command phase, Eponymous Reaver can issue an order to two squadron units. A squadron unit is basically any vehicle unit. This order remains in effect until my next command phase.
● Special Rule--Vox Net: Captain Eponymous Reaver can issue orders to a unit 12 inches away
● Special Rule--Death Befitting an Officer: if I remember, Eponymous Reaver can shoot upon death before the model is removed from play
Reaver is named after its tank commander, Eponymous Reaver. She hails from the planet Tallarn. Before joining the Nostroman 9th she had an infamous career as a space pirate. She and her crew savaged the space lanes around Tallarn for years. She grew up hearing stories of Tallarn's great tank battles. She uses this cultural advantage as she leads the  Nostroman 9th's Leman Russes into battle.

BATTLE LINE
● Sergeant Sevatar's 1st Squad, 20 Chaos Traitor Guard, counts-as 20 Cadian Infantry, plasma gun, 2 meltaguns, 16 lasguns, laspistol, chainsword=130
● Sergeant Lobo's 2nd Squad, 20 Chaos Traitor Guard, counts-as 20 Cadian Infantry, plasma gun, 2 grenade launchers, 16 lasguns, laspistol, chainsword=130
● Sergeant Vicious Pete's 3rd Squad, 20 Chaos Traitor Guard, counts-as 20 Cadian Infantry, plasma gun, grenade launcher, meltagun, 16 lasguns, laspistol, chainsword=130
Madame Voodoo's 4th Squad, 20 Chaos Traitor Guard, counts-as 20 Cadian Infantry, plasma gun, meltagun, 17 lasguns, laspistol, chainsword=130
● Sergeant Red Talon's 5th Squad, 10 Chaos Traitor Guard, counts-as 10 Cadian Infantry, plasma gun, flamer, 7 lasguns, laspistol, chainsword=65
● Sergeant Goragon's 6th Squad, 10 Chaos Traitor Guard, counts-as 10 Cadian Infantry, plasma gun, flamer, 7 lasguns, laspistol, chainsword,=65
● Special Rule--Shock Troops: Traitor Guard can "sticky" objectives during my command phase
● Special Rule--Vox Caster: whoever I use a strat on a unit with a vox set I roll a D6. On a 5+ I gain 1 CP. If 1 or more officers are within 6 inches of the unit then I gain 1 CP on a 4+.
The Nostroman 9th's rank and file Traitor Guard infantry are a diverse lot. Some fight for coin, some for Chaos, some fight against the fascist Imperium, and some fight for the sake of fighting. These combat veterans are willing to put their lives on the line as long as they receive their due from the Regiment's Paymaster.
The leader of each squad is quite a character:

Sergeant Sevatar is a brilliant and cruel warrior. He styles himself after his namesake, the infamous Jago Sevatarion, also called Sevatar. Sevatarion was one of Nighthaunter's lieutenants and fought alongside Conrad Curze before and during the Horus Heresy. Sevatar secretly hopes to someday be permitted to take House Nightfall's Mercantile Trial of Blood, the process by which a mortal can become an Astartes.

Sergeant Lobo is a mutant wolf man, called a gnoll on his home world of Luna V. He is a long-lived veteran of House Nightfall. He has decapitated Tau, seen the triple Suns of Omnos V, ridden space whales off of the Orion Nebula, and pistol-whipped and drank recaf with Druchii slavers. He was once his squad's missile launcher trooper but he never bothered to fire the weapon. He just used it as a large club. Impressed with his aggressive creativity, Commander Dnegrah promoted Lobo to Squad Champion of 2nd Squad.

Acting Sergeant (he is actually a Renegade Commander) Vicious Pete is a bastard's bastard. A sly manipulator of the Nostroman 9th's black market. He seems to have his hands in everything and information is his key currency.

Madame Voodoo is the chieftain of "the Marauders." The Marauders are space pirates hired by Dnegrah. They are wanton miscreants who excel at boarding operations. Only Madame Voodoo possesses sufficient cunning and ferocity to keep these savage space buccaneers under her heel. She is forever searching for a fabled lost treasure, a Rogue Trader's forgotten stash of gold and STC templates.

Goragon and her sister Moragon were sired on a planet held by House Nightfall, Nachfel. As such she has only known life under House Nightfall's ruling Council of Thirteen.
She and her sister Moragon grew up in the shadow of the Great Unknown Spire, an edifice constructed by the pro-daemon faction within the Council. Both her parents were priests of Chaos and she was expected to follow in their footsteps.
But she and her sister followed a different path. They left the ever-present shadow of the Spire and joined the guard, the Traitor Guard. They started as rank-and-file Cultists serving in the Nostroman 9th Chaos Renegades and Heretics Militia. But while on campaign in the Ouros Nebula both sisters impressed Enforcer Commissar Greenklaw. He promoted them on the spot. Both became corporals in the Nostroman 9th's Traitor Guard, a far more professional armed cadre than the Cultists Mobs. To celebrate her promotion, Goragon had a hook surgically grafted to her left arm, which she had lost during the campaign.
Both sisters spy on Renegade Commander Dnegrah, a powerful member of the The Council of Thirteen' Workers' Faction. They report their findings back to Daemon Prince Buzzard, the leader of the Council of Thirteen's Daemon Faction.

Red Talon is the Nostroman 9th's Falcon Master. It is he who is responsible for the care and upkeep of the Traitor Guard regiment's various murders, flocks, and groups of falcons. He carefully curated and genesplices each generation of birds to be more clever and more deadly than the last.

OTHER DATASHEETS

Hound of Chaos, Scout Sentinel, lascannon, hunter-killer missile=55
◇ Star of Chaos, Scout Sentinel, lascannon, hunter-killer missile=55
● Special Rule--Daring Recon: at the start of my shooting phase select 1 enemy unit within 18 inches of a Scout Sentinel. All units in my army can re-roll to hit rolls of 1 when shooting at that unit.
The sentinels are fast units. Perfect for harassing the enemies' flanks. The sentinel pilot have a reputation for being reckless mavericks. Each pilot has atrophied, their flesh withering away over the years. But each pilot is still alive, cybernetically connected to their machine and kept alive by unholy Chaos magickes.

♤ Sergeant Vor's 12th Squad, 5 Snipers, counts-as Ratlings, 5 sniper rifles=60
● Special Rule--Shoot and Scarper: Corporal Vor and his squad of elite snipers can make an extra move after shooting. They are then no longer eligible to charge that turn.
Sergeant Vor lost his family to an Imperium punitive action. One day a squad of Cadians torched his village, slaughtered anyone over 30 and under 15, and pressed the survivors into the Imperial Guard. The village had been behind on its grain shipments to the Administratum. Private Vor had a knack for marksmanship and so he became a sniper in the Cadian 8th. Somewhere along the way, the opportunity to defect to Chaos presented itself and so Private Vor, formerly of the Cadian 8th, became a member of the 88th Blood Pact.
Vor still harbors hatred for the Imperium and is always very satisfied when he can put a sniper round through the skull of a high-ranking Imperial officer or official. The fact that the 88th Blood Pact is just as cruel to civilians and just as fascistic as the Imperium does not really bother Vor. After all, it wasn't the 88th Blood Pact that killed his family.

♤ Corporal Bale's 8th Squad, 5 Storm Troopers, counts-as Tempestus Scions, 2 hellguns, plasma guns, meltagun, vox, Corporal Bale with hot-shot laspistol and power sword=70
● Special Rule--Storm Troopers: re-roll wound rolls of 1 when attacking. If the enemy is on an objective, Storm Troopers can re-roll all wound rolls when attacking.
Corporal Bale defected from the 13th Elysian Drop Troops Regiment, The Hell Divers. He was fed up with the Empire's fascism and hypocrisy. Not to mention he was scared of heights. He was surprised to lean that while House Nightfall is no democracy, they take care of their own. Corporal Bale now happily leads 5th Squad, many of 5th Squad's members were Elysians who defected with Corporal Bale. Plus, the Nostroman 9th has never asked him to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft. Instead they use Warp Talons to rip holes in spacetime, thus allowing Corporal Bale and his squad to insert where they are most needed.

13th Squad, Chaos Militia Heavy Weapons Team, counts-as Cadian Heavy Weapons Team with 3 lascannons=65
● Special Rule--Covering Fire: when this unit fires Overwatch, it hits on a 5+ instead of a 6+. And if it is within 6 inches of a Platoon unit, it hits on a 4+ during Overwatch.
13th Squad: Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder.

Blood Debt, Artillery Team, Siege Cannon=95
Excess, Artillery Team, Siege Cannon=95
Hatred, Artillery Team, Siege Cannon=95
● Special Rule--Remorseless Barrage: if an arty team hits an enemy unit via indirect fore, that unit must immediately take a battle-shock test. This effect does not stack and an enemy unit only needs to take 1 test a turn.
The artillery crew are traitor guard who now use their weapons against their former comrades. Each of the three crews worships a different Chaos God. They compete to see which crew can rack up the most kills. At the end of each campaign the winner is awarded which special rites and sacrifice victims.

Khorne's Ire, Leman Russ Exterminator, Exterminator Autocannon, lascannon, 2 multimeltas, heavy stubber=180
● Special Rule--Withering Hail of Fire: if Khorne's Ire's autocannons hits an enemy unit, for the rest of the shooting phase all Traitor Guard shooting against that target gets an additional AP to its wound rolls.
Khorne's Ire's currency is flesh and bone
Hell opened up and put on sale.
Gather 'round and haggle
For hard cash, we will lie and deceive,
even our masters don't know
The webs we weave.
     Khorne's Ire doesn't negotiate.
Khorne's Ire doesn't capitulate.
They will take and you will give.
And you must die so that they may live

All in all this was a really fun game. My opponent was really nice and laid back--a very chill game on a summer afternoon/evening. As is the norm, the Nostroman 9th were easily defeated. Hilariously, this army has only won a single game since 2017.

This was my first time using the new IG Codex. I rather like it. In the hands of a competitive player, the recycling of units strat seems over-powered. But in the hands of a casual/mediocre player such as myself, it's a balanced, fun, and fluffy stratagem. The army rule is nifty as well.

I'm pondering whether to bring the Nostromans to next summer's Tacoma Open. If I did, I'd want to complete the following Nostroman 9th projects by July 2026:

1. Assemble and paint a Rogal Dorn Command Tank. This tank would be kitbashed to look like a WW2 assault gun or tank destroyer. Think Soviet Su-85 or German Stug IV. I've seen some good conversions on the internet along these lines.

2. Paint up about 19 or so unpainted Traitor Guard infantry

3. Repaint the bases on about 80 or so Traitor Guard infantry

4. Purchase, assemble, and paint 3 Nostroman artillery teams. I would convert the artillery crew into plasma gunners and Krieg medics and use my existing artillery crew to operate the new guns

It sure would be nice if I got my Chaos Militia rules back.  They weren't particularly good rules in 8th or 9th edition, but at least I had rules.

Enjoy the photos!

Nostroman 9th, "Hell's horde!"

The Defiler looks great, I love all the little extra grunts hanging around it. The one sitting on that "bar" (I don't know what it is) reminds me of an old school photo of skyscraper construction workers sitting on iron railings. The scourge looks absolutely vicious, is that a piece from another kit or did you kitbash it yourself?

Thanks Volgon! The scourge is a couple of kitbashes on top of a whirring blade bit.

Sadly, I'm not sure where the whirring blade bit is from. I found it in a bitz box at a local gaming store. The bit has iconography from the Dark Elves and Slaanesh though, so I suspect it comes from Age of Sigmar or Warhammer Fantasy's Dark Elves or Slaaneshi daemons ranges.

I then added various bits, 5 or 6 blade bits, the circular saw bit at the top, and the bunch of spikes bit at the bottom which is from a Victoria Miniatures sprue.

image.thumb.jpeg.a120b5400d071ec36b2f5bc6a870769f.jpeg

It was a lot of fun to add those onto what is already a nice bit.

The scourge core looks like Daughters of Khaine bloodwrack shrine with a slaanesh chariot 'wheel' on the top there.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

Thanks Doctor! That sure is a nice bit. I was fortunate to find it.

I've started a new hobbying project, a Rogal Dorn Command Tank for my Nostroman 9th Traitor Guard Regiment. This kitbashed vehicle is influenced by WWII assault guns and Tank Destroyers like the Soviet Su-85 and the German Stug IV. Whenever I play Company of Heroes 2, I love using these vehicles.

My kitbash is also influenced by the now defunct Forgeworld Destroyer Tank Hunter. I really enjoyed the depiction of this vehicle in the Gaunt's Ghost book Honor Guard. In the novel you get to see how a sniper tank destroyer would work when you see the Grey Venger in action.

The kitbash will feature a front-mounted main cannon; plasticard front, top, bottom, and rear (because I used those bitz in my Yemelina's Lament project); and the top will be removable so you can see the engine, crew, battery, and various gubbins.

Since my Traitor Guard will be owned and operated by "House Nightfall" the tank will be named Conrad's Revenge. House Nightfall is made up of descendants of Nostromans who fled when their planet was destroyed. They think the Imperium destroyed Nostramo and they revere Curze (forgetting his darker elements).

A mockup of the driver

The chair is from Etsy: Watcorp Designs...

The driver is an old Sentinel pilot. The arms and head are from the Necromunda Cargo 8 gunners.

Here are 7 of 8 of the tank's weapons

I will eschew sponsons, I never have liked the look of sponsons. I'll put 6 of the weapons in the front and 2 heavy stubbers on the top. Of course, the true Tank Destroyers usually just had a main cannon and some heavy machine guns.

Another mockup of the interior

The engine is from Zinge Industries. The multimeltas are from Malcharion, my Night Lords Contemptor counts-as Helbrute. The chain cannon is from a Space Wolves termie.

Aaand I made the multimeltas' firing ports too small

And now they fit!

I won't be painting this project immediately. I'll only be assembling and priming it before the cold weather sets in. But I hope to paint Curze's Revenge over the winter.

I should be getting a main cannon from Victoria Miniatures soon. So adding the main cannon, finishing the front, and assembling and magnetizing the roof are the next steps.

Enjoy the photos!
