Alakinsky.

If the Cypher is separate then he can be vowed as he is a single legal unit. Make sure he is on his own base for gaming purposes.

A single Wolf Guard is not a legal unit and therefore cannot be added in a vow. If it was a Wolf Lord then yes.

Again on his own base game legal.

The diorama base can be used as scenery which has no points value for the purposes of the ETL.

Which raises an important question. Can fortiifications etc be vowed as part of the ETL?

So funniest thing just happened. As I was calculating how many points my first and subsequent (if we do them this year) vows would be, and I accidentally made a half decent CotGW list. I may just take it to the shop this weekend to have a go (proxying in the wulfen).

Hell yeah! Our numbers grow! I ordered all of the needed bits and models for my pledges, I'm just hoping they make it in time.

On a separate note, how feasible would this be fluff-wise; Wulfen Terminators. I'll still use the Wulfen rules, but as for fluff, especially linked to the 13th Co. and Redmaw's Co., the curse doesn't discriminate. So it could be fully possible honored veterans blessed with Terminator armor would succumb, and no one would have the balls to tell their feral brother that he has to turn his gear in.

I thought about a similiar conversion. Especially for a pack of 5 Wulfen with shield and hammer.

So I would say: Go for it!

(Maaaaybe if the new AoS Orruks have a nice scale that works with the Wulfen heads, they could be used for a similiar conversion, too. Wulfen in remnants of Terminator Armor with looted scraps here and there?)

Regarding ETL - what I have prepped already:

5 Rune Priests

5 Cataphractii Terminators (including Sergeant)

3x5 Blood Claws

4 Wulfen (would that be allowed? I only finished one as a test when they were released.)

Logan Grimnar

5 Scouts

Cypher

3 Thunderwolf Riders

Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf

Iron Priest on Thunderwolf

What I got on sprues, still to do:

Wolf Lord

Arjac Rockfist

Land Raider Crusader

Stormfang/Stormwolf

5 Grey Hunter including a Banner

...and an Imperial Knight (last vow, if I do him...)

(...and 3 Dreadnoughts, 3 Droppods, 50+ Marines, 12 Fenrisian Wolves, 7 Thunderwolf Riders are already built, but are last reserves)

Yep we are still growing albeit at a slower pace. I am really proud of the Rout this year :)

Please be mindful yhst the etl is not for everyone, so recruit from those folks you know or are showingan interest.

As time marches on it may well be that we open a dedicated prep thread. So folks can show what yhey are working on etc.

Although sw1 has already started something similar

So, we are now at the 2 week mark for recruitment.

While numbers coming in have slowed, they are still climbing.

Today we now stand at 44 brothers and sisters in arms :)

Of which 14 are new to the ETL.

I would urge that those who have done the ETL before make every effort to welcome our Blood Claws in and to offer help & encouragement to them .

btw Tempes is the 44th and 14th new ETL participant :)

Well done Wolves!!

I'm looking forward to the banter and support the ETL generates between members of the forum. My painting season seems to be purely during the ETL over the last couple of years. This year is likely going to be a repeat. :D

The main thing I want to mention before it officially starts is we're here to have FUN and by the end of it we end up with more painted models than we started with. You might even pick up a few new hobbying/painting skills along the way.

If you don't already have one it's worth while starting some form of WIP (work in progress) blog to chart how your doing. It's a great tool to get feedback on what you produce or ask for help or even share new techniques with the pack. Also if you are new to the hobby having a record of your painting will help you look at how you progress easier. This can then help keep you motivated. :tu:

I have to ask, are we doing the Cypher thing as a separate post or will it be within this one?

As a new member to the ETL I have planned out a rather simple low model count/high point cost first vow consisting of:-

Cypher - 190 points

Murderfang - 135 points

Ragnar Blackmane - 195 points

Iron Priest on TWM - 125 points

Harald Deathwolf - 190 points

3x TWC - 2 Storm Shield, 1 Thunder Hammer, 1 pair of Wolf Claws - 210 points

TOTAL - 1045 points

I haven't created a B&C gallery yet and I've been out of the hobby about 10 years so my painting standard isn't fantastic. I've kept my Twitter uploaded with current progress which you can see here:- https://mobile.twitter.com/account

Any comment and criticisms are most welcome.

I'll start building and priming my minis as soon as I have my first grey hunter batch done. A counts as Cypher WIP will go up this weekend also ahead of the event.

So as of right now, it looks like my initial vow will be Cypher, Bran Redmaw, 2x 5 Wulfen (2 TH/SS, 2 axes, 1 claw/grenade), and a las/melta Storm Eagle at 1140 pts. I may have to hold off on vowing as the bits may arrive late.

The current pile of minis I can vow is looking a bit daunting to get done in 3months (I am known in my group for being slow at painting!), so I will defonatly be breaking my pledge down into manageable bits.

At the moment I have ready:

x3 Landspeeder Typhoons (one of which is my home made one)

x3 Razorbacks with either TLLCs or las/plas

x2 5 man blood claws units

A Wolf Lord with PF and WC

An Iron Priest with tempest hammer and hellfrost pistol

Ulrik the slayer

x3 Drop pods

A Predator

A Vindicator (although I think this might not be aloud as it's got a wash on top of the base coat, I just started it before the ETL was announced).

And a Landraider Crusader if I get it finished in time.

I don't think I will get all that done, but I can make a dent in it!haha.

@Nanaki - The Cypher model will be in with these vows. :tu:

I'm in a similar situation, the main thing to remember is keeping things manageable. I was originally thinking of vowing exactly 3,000 points and then doing a couple of smaller vows. Instead I'm now thinking of limiting myself to a first vow of 10 models and not get overly concerned about the points value. Once I've completed the first one I'll be able to work out what my current painting speed is and then I can make a better decisions on further vow sizes. ;)

Yeah I had planned in 7-10k as a target for this ETL and the wife's decided the 2 weeks I booked off mid ETL from work we'll be going on holiday for atleast one of them maybe both. Lol ... The plan was to get my painting speed up and then challenge myself to paint like a mad man for a week or so.

One thing I'm considering is grouping similar models together. So Cypher and the Wolf Priests being black or off black will get painted in the same vow. All the Rune Priests will hopefully have blue glowing runes so they'll be together in another vow.

LETS PUT VOW DISCUSSION AND QUERIES INTO THIS THREAD smile.png

Hail & Well met, warrior of Russ!!

First of all we would like to thnk you for considering to join the Wolves on this grand adventure & welcome you to the ETL. We sincerely hope that you will find it both interesting & fun. As you haven’t taken part in The ETL with the Wolves before, we thought it would be a good idea to put together a small something, to give you some explanation & tips as to what the ETL is

For those who have not been involved in a painting competition, hopefully this will help to give you a flavour of what to expect. If you have done a similar competition in the past, we hope this doesn’t come across as teaching you how to suck eggs

So what is the ETL?

ETL stands for E Tenebrae Lux. The ETL started out life as a painting challenge put forth by the Dark Angels sub-forum. This has now grown to encompass all the sub-forums into a full on, inter-forum painting competition whereby an individual vows a legal unit (or units) for a particular faction (Space Wolves in our instance) and has to paint them to completion (to your standard, which you alone can decide) within a three month time frame. The faction with the most points painted is crowned the winner earning eternal glory (special signatures, etc) and a year's worth of bragging rights.

This is the fifth year of the ETL.

The ETL V

Captain Semper has already hinted that basic rules will be the same as last year, but he will not tell anyone which date will be used to mark the start of the ETL. However based on previous events we can surmise that:

The challenge will start on either 1st May 2016 and run until 1st August or it will run 15th May until the 15th August.

In order to participate in the ETL, your first vow must be made within 1 month of the ETL start date.

Maximum vows to be five, maximum of 3000 points per vow, A new one can be made once you have completed the previous one.

All models to be a legal Codex entry and WYSIWYG

Two pictures must be supplied. An unpainted/primed picture at the start of your vow, as evidence that you have not jumped the gun and a picture of your completed vow. If you have made a vow, but are working on your models in stages for example 4 packs of 10 Grey Hunters, but you plan to do them in batches of 20, a before shot of each batch, and then a final picture of all the models completed will suffice

As this is the fifth incarnation of the event, Captain Semper has also hinted he is going to throw a curveball into the event , but as yet, we have no idea what it might be, so we will keep you posted when we find out and what it will mean for you.

What Can I Do?

Basically, we have up to 3 weeks to prepare ourselves for the challenge ahead. Use the time to plan your vow(s) into manageable chunks and get them assembled. If you can, get them primed in advance.

Make your vows manageable: Split the models you want to vow up into small manageable portions and work on them when you can. It takes the pressure off of you and it will give more time to look around and enjoy the creativity around. There is nothing worse than being head down, bum up and painting 24/7, under pressure to hit a deadline and detesting every moment of it.

From a team perspective, any uncompleted vows nullify your entire points haul & affect the rest of the Space Wolves overall points total, so small achievable vows are much better than one large daunting vow. We would like to achieve as close to 100% completion rate as possible.

Paint all your Thunderwolves/ Fenrisian Wolves/Wulfen as one vow, or split into 2, paint all your vehicles in one vow, troops in another. This will hopefully get you into a production line style of painting and will help you to get through a number of models faster than painting them individually. I know.

For years I have painted one model at a time and get so discouraged when I see on model don, but a wall of grey plastic/ resin staring at me. Getting into a production line kind ogf groove has really helped keep me motivated and seen me start to work my way through the literal mountain of models sitting in my garage.

If you are magnetising, vow the expensive choice! Also, things like hunter-killer missiles count as they are WYSIWYG so add them to your vehicles even if it's via blu-tac!

Rumour is that we will be allowed to run Cypher, so raid your bits box for a bolt pistol, plasma pistol and enough parts to make a counts-as Cypher

Pace yourself: real life stuff, such as, exams, weddings, births, looking for a job etc can and most likely will come up at some point during the ETL, so leave yourself a little bit of wiggle room. If you start to get hacked off then take a wee break to recharge the batteries before going again.

Remember, the ETL is a marathon not a sprint, so there is no need to go hammer & thong in the first week only to tire yourself out.

Never be afraid to ask questions: As an engineer the first thing I was taught, is that there is no such thing as a stupid question. The Space Wolves forum is one of the friendliest on here & if you are struggling with something or are unsure about what can go into a vow etc.. Ask, because there will always be someone out there willing to help you.

We are a Team: One of the best parts of the ETL is the melting pot of modellers & painters coming together. Not sure how to paint something? Put it out there. Saw someone use a new technique? Ask how it was done. Want to share something you have learned? Share it.

There may be some Silver Wolves amongst us, but we are never too old to learn & we like new tricks

Have fun: Above all this is the most important thing to do. We want this to be really enjoyable for you & something we hope you will want to take part in year after year

So lets take up our brushes & like the Wolves which came before us, relish the challenge ahead. For Russ & the AllFather
