Looks good and that makes sense that you might want to do that. I do mine with the HH burgundy, as I started doing 30k WB and then went to 40k, so no need to try to make it darker :) Edited by WrathOfTheLion

Flesh has been developed and I've started on the highlights for my NMM trim.

I know that my NMM isn't the purest or most elaborate effect, but I think it is quite stylistic at the end of the process and i'm too far into the project to change it up now. As for the wisdom of applying this method to a model like this, well, who knows.

An update! Been a bit sporadic with the painting recently but I did get a few new treats to help get things back into the groove. First up this rather fabulous set of Series S brushes from Artis Opus, which was a birthday gift from my mother.

I've only used them a couple of times, but I have to say I'm impressed, now to make sure I look after them!

I also used a little birthday cash to upgrade from my DIY wet palette to the everlasting wet palette from Redgrass Games. Used it for the first time tonight and I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Spent a fair bit of time on the heldrake tonight while my kids watched the third Harry Potter movie, moving on to the administratum grey highlight stage of the trim on the body.

The last thing I've acquired recently came from good old Facebook market place a glass display cabinet for a mere

I have been painting a bit, but not much to show, however, I have rearranged my dining room such that I can fit the display cabinet in. I also got a new, whiter bulb for it and fitted a switch to the lead.

I have to say having my own display cabinet has proper cheered me up after a pretty naff week.

I have since retrieved the rest of the army from the attic where it was in carry cases, but there are a few bits of damage that require repair so I'll hold off on photos until I've done that.

Back to the paint!

I'm done with the heldrake torso for now, the final highlights will follow final assembly.

I'm thinking I might batch paint a few of the smaller pieces, the backplates, legs and armour panels that kind of thing.

So I did the repairs and here's the whole army in all it's glory!

I'm filled with childish glee at the prospect of having my own display cabinet, which is a little silly, but there we go.

Time for some heldrake legs! I've decided to batch paint the four component parts of the legs as they should be quite quick to paint up.

I think I got a better groove with the make-up brush drybrushing and am quite happy with the effect, this will still be highlighted to achieve the final effect.

Let me know what you think.

I was right that the legs painted up nice and quick!

They need some touch ups and few more highlights to the trim, but i'm planning on leaving the structural parts more or less as they are at the moment rather than going ott on the highlights there.

I couldn't resist having a test fit of the pieces.

Overall I'm happy with the effect, but I think that despite my best efforts during the planning stage I'm going to end up with not inconsiderable gaps at the joins between leg and body. I suspect I will need to fill these, but I've not had to use green stuff on a painted model before, how much danger is my paint job in trying to get this right?

Progress on my heldrake, made a start on a wing, I tried to drybrush in opposite directions on the undersides to the top, I hope it comes across in the photos. Everyone says the trim is the hard bit on these but with the knowledge that all of that armour needs at least another coat of paint, a shade and highlights for each panel and the trim sounds positively joyful!

Got the red basecoats and shade done

gallery_62155_11151_578151.jpg

And then before moving on to highlights I basecoated the wing freehand, I've been planning this a while and it's really nice to see how effective it already starting to look. Quite excited to finish this.

gallery_62155_11151_170070.jpg

Is it yellow over white or just multiple layers of yellow for the flames?

So far it is just two coats of averland sunset straight over the red. I will be going over it with a combination of yellows, oranges and reds to finish off.

Moving on a little and we move past this point:

gallery_62155_11151_146000.jpg

And get here:

gallery_62155_11151_165998.jpg

At which point we realise that I painted the wrong bottom armour plate and will need to do the other one rather urgently. I also need to do the highlights on the trim, I decided to try it out with the wing assembled so I didn't waste time on overshadowed areas.

gallery_62155_11151_621471.jpg

This thing is really bloody massive!

So to save just getting enough paint for the correct wrist armour I made a start on the head and neck.

Jeep the comments rolling, still a chunk to do on these bits, but I'm liking where they're going.

Pushing on slowly but surely with the heldrake, after some suggestions on the baleflamer I decided to add some blue to it.

gallery_62155_11151_226194.jpg

gallery_62155_11151_102653.jpg

So then I got all inspired and kept going to the point where i'm waiting for final assembly to do the last white highlights.

gallery_62155_11151_196056.jpg

As you can see I added a bit of heat staining to the muzzle, did the metal trim and added some blood for the blood god around the mouth. I'm pretty pleased, let me know what you guys think.

As I continue my one man crusade to keep the Word Bearers sub-forum alive with my long-running blog, I made some progress on my Heldrake's wings. I was pleased with the head so having finished the armour plate I accidentally did the wrong handed version of I decided it was high time to tackle the trim of the first wing.

I decided to tackle this by doing it in stages, of which I have completed two, as ever final white highlights will wait until post-final assembly.

Keep the comments coming, it get lonely in here.

I'd add a thread, but I've been working on my HH DA right now. But will start one soon...

Actually, got a heavy support squad that's very close to done, might start it today.

That's the spirit!

The fire effects look great, love them.

I'll bang out the last bits of that HSS and a Tactical support squad to start that.

Thanks, saw your thread good stuff!

Yeah, the fire effects look great. At first, I thought they looked too "evil sunz" (the ork clan), but now the trim is all done I don't feel that way anymore.

Thanks, the flames have been a recurring theme across the army, although not normally on this kind of scale.

absolutely amazing!

Cheers fella.

Another step onward, I'm toying with the laziness of not highlighting trim on the underside of the wing, just leaving it at the level that the flame wing is at at the moment, but that is pure laziness.
