Arch-heretek Carnosaur's dark forge of stuff

Recommended Posts

About a month ago as a birthday gift, i bought the new renegade knight box set for myself, having always loved knight titans since long before they became a thing on the tabletop, even going as far as converting one from dreadnought and defiler parts for my chaos back in early 5th edition.

but with the dawn of this new box, i could no longer help my relatively poor self but to finally get started with knights now that a force can be mustered much cheaper, after much restraint since the first kit came out...

So here is the first of the roster, fairly close to completely build:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0248_1.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0246_1.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0249_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0254_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0257_2.jpg

i tried to keep the changes to the model somewhat minimalistic, since i do quite like the default look of the knights, the most obvious at a glance is probably the clothy parts:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0252_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0271.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0267.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0266.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0263_1.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0264_2.jpg

(the knee pads have been replaced with some warhammer fantasy marauder horsemen shields, with a peice of sprue at the back as a spacer that fits into the groove on the knee... this was both for some more chaosey detailing, differenciating the 3 knights i'll make abit, and also so i can use the standard pads on the 3rd old scrathbuilt knight)

this was made using filters for a coffee maker with the tested and true "soak paper in glue" method, coffee filters are almost perfect however ive found, since its fairly thick, fibrous, sucks up alot of moisture, and also cheap as dirt...

also i made some more progress since taking these pictures, like covering the ugly groin part with the armor plating and some chain, and the cloth it self got another couple coats of various glues

Speaking of chains though, it was my plan all along to add lots of dangling ones for no other purpose than it looking good, i did this in various ways using mostly exsisting anchor points on the model, its fiddly as hell though, and i found the easiest solution was to bend a rough big link from wire

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0256_1.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0262_1.jpg

(these pictures also show a few big bolts i added to the shoulder bars, i plan to not give him shoulder pads, as i simply prefer that silhuette and look myself, and without them, i feel liek that part needed a tiny bit of visual clutter)

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0261_1.jpg

(here i tried cutting the plastic anchor point, then supergluing it back on top of the attached chain, it was hell and i cannot recomment it... it also shows some of the changed details on the model, like the chained up defiler hatch instead of the rather bland mechanicus cylender cap)

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0253_3.jpg

(i also added some little plates to the sword for more of a classic chainsaw look, i quite liek this detail myself)

another quite noticable change is probably the gun, now the box only comes with one warden/gallant sprue for the two knights, so if you want moree than one avenger cannon, you need to improvise, and so i did, its a quite simple yet fiddly build, a stack of plastic rods attached instead of the outermost part of the cannon barrel, and with some extra detailing to what is now a housing of the rotary barrels.

i did mess up abit in the build of the cannon though initially, and i very much regret not adding the melta part to the hallow cannon casing ejector thing at the back, i simply forgot about it till it was all glued together... but oh well

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0274_1.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0273_1.jpg

(i plan the represent the heavy flamer by adding one of those chaos vehicle dragon-ey gargoyle heads to where the heavy stubber would normally be poking out of the front shield, which also reinforces my heavily dark souls influenced look some)

so yeah, that is it for now, this guy is fairly close to completion, but there are still some more details i wanna fiddle with, as well as decide what icon to use up above his head on top of the carapace (the carapace that also needs finishing and detailing).

for paint scheme for my knights iam not quite sure what to go for, it basically depends on what route i decide to go for them lore wise, either they will be the focus of my dark mechanicus forces, the infantry basically a sort of renegade titan legio along with them, or perhaps these knights will be tag-alongs with them, a once noble house sworn to service of a heretek out of neccecity after their own world has fallen to ruin... either way they will find themselves as allies to my iron warriors

back before the models arrived, i actually toyed with some color schemes and rough idea sketches:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/dankknight%20ultradank.jpeg

(stand alone renegade house)

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/dankknight%20red.jpeg

(dark mech house)

any thoughts?

(oh and yeah, i know i swapped the shoulder gun/shield around, thats on purpose, it simply looks better to me this way tongue.png )

I really like your dark mech color scheme, but I might be bias because it's fairly close to mine

I also really liked the robed look and may steal that if I do a third knight.

My two cents: I really dislike the look of knights without shoulders. They just look unfinished somehow. Maybe there's some kind of mid-ground of designing your own smaller ones to keep the look you're going for?

yeah i was originally toying with that idea in the early idea sketch thing, but i think its mostly down to personal preference, its not like with space marines where the shoulders are a massively iconic part of their design, and personally i very much prefer the sleeker unshouldered look and even the bars and beams over the shoulders themselves. I do want to add abit more detailing to the big bars though than just the bolts to sorta do away more with the "unfinished" look...

iam contemplating removing the bolts and instead adding some plates on the side to continue the shape of the beams behind the bar, making it abit less "flat" like that if that makes any sense

I really like the look of the Knight without the shoulder pads. I may have to play with the idea myself for my crusader. It'll give some contrast to the other Knights. Theft is the highest form of praise after all :)

Really like this, i'm partial towards the dark mech but that might be subjective bias there, both look good but i prefer the red. I really like the details you've added and are planning!

I'm ok without the shoulders, after all they are just big armour plates protecting blows mostly from above, so other than airstrikes are really mostly decorative. I think the shoulder plates look good on and look good off.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on this thread :)

Great looking knight. Going to have to steal the coffee paper idea looks fantastic. The mockup colours look good i think the red works really wel. The shoulders on the mockups have a little extra than just the bars along with spikes and I think the double thickness is whats needed to give it a finished look.

  • 4 weeks later...

time for a long-overdue update!

i more or less finished building the knight, the base just needs some sand added, and i need to assemble the missile pod for his back

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0232_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0234_3.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0248_2.jpg

it was mostly final detailing really and the base, moreso than any actual structural work:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0236_3.jpg

the groin armor was added alogn with a chain, which really ties together the big loincloth thing

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0237_3.jpg

i added little "winglets" to the knees for a more sorta "medeival knight" armor look, it'l be subtle in the end, but i always liked those things (also yes, the shin armor still has mold-lines and all, its just held on with bluetack)

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0245_2.jpg

i added the heavy flamer to the main gun, in suitably ornate chaosey dragon-gargoyle-head fashion

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0247_2.jpg

and finally i changed the shoulder bars abit as seemed to be needed, i still wanna keep them rather plain though, i just like the look of it that way, and i dont have to tools to make particularly fine rivets on hand

in other news i also got abit of work done on my less-knightly fellows, even going as far as painting (which only happens a couple of times a year for me generally)

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0249_3.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0252_3.jpg

just a simple "first draft" rank and file iron warrior, ive already pinpointed a few places for improvement, this was just the practice dude, i do liek the dark dirty look i managed to get though, its pretty much what i initially had in mind for the style of what i wanted to do ( http://orig05.deviantart.net/3972/f/2016/054/c/b/iron_warrior_by_carnosaur93-d9sviab.jpg this, if anyone are interested)

i also tried to photograpth some of my other marine conversions and such, but since they are primed black and i dont have proper light setup the photos just came out as vague silhuettes (do say if you want me to post them up anyway)

finally, i also have a few older mechanicus conversions that i finally took some pictures of.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0260_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0261_2.jpg

A warsmith (count as dominus), i'll make him a couple of servitors to represent his ranged weapons and act as wound counters... it just seems so much more mechanicus-like to carry your guns that way to me

... speaking of which

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0279.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0281.jpg

arc rifles for my vanguard squads, i decided it would be cool and more varied/fun to build the units if the special weapons were servitors. just simple-ish conversions of various cultist and guard parts with kataphron heavy arc-whatevers because i had spares, with some plastic-card thingies here and there

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0283.jpg

these are the unit leaders for the vanguards, very obvious and easy to identify with their (classic mechanicus-) hoods, relaxed posture, and misc' scanning gear

then there are the kataphrons, i never quite liked the "tracked dude" look in all honesty, but looking over all the parts in the kit i figured out a way to fix them by making something ala' those guys from forgeworld whose name i keep forgetting, and better yet, this way i could make 6 from one box of 3 and still have plenty spare parts (including the track sections for makign say rapiers or the like)

also these are by no means done painting-wise, i had to stop halfway through base colors because i lacked the proper paints to continue:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0262_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0263_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0265.jpg

dude 1

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0266_1.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0267_1.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0269.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0270_1.jpg

dude 2

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0274_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0276.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0277.jpg

dude 3

the main bulk of them were made from tightly packed up tinfoil, pressed and cut to shape, and then using the "wet tissue" technique to layer cloth-looking robes on top of that, then it was just am atter of detailing, like addign the breacher chestplates, arms, heads, etc. the exception being the one guy (will be three) which has the original kataphron destroyer upper body, the legs for him (them in future) made the same way as the others

also a nice thing about them is that i will easily be able to use them as stand ins for grav-centurions, once i replace their arms with the heavy-stubber/bolt-whatevers that i wanna give them now that they cant ride in pods anymore anyway (making the cognis flamers much much less attractive)

so yeah, thats it for now, thoughts? input?

dang i hit the image limit, and i also forgot the close-ups of the knight's base:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0238_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0239_4.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0241_2.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0243_1.jpg

as mentioned it still needs sand to tie everything together, but i simply used a mix of cork scraps, some of the cities of death peices that comes with the knight box, and cardboard to make some tiles

iam very happy with how it turned out, actually, it looks suitably messy and random i think, and i like how the tiles sorta angling up around the toes turned out (and it was very easy to do, also, just added a random little speck of whatever was at hand under it as a spacer), the idea was to try to add some details like that to help illustrate the weight of such a metal behemoth

EDIT: adding to the to-do list aside from the base, i wanna add more clothy parts to tie in the "hood" more, and also i jsut got the idea of adding stakes haphazardly hammered into the edges of the cokpit door, as if someone tried to seal it from the outside to conceal the horrors within

i finished building the knight!

Behold! Sir Artorias of house Lodran! (and also dank references)

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0233_3.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0235_3.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0238_3.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0236_4.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0240_1.jpg

as you can probably see, i added a few final touches, and even some that dont really come out in the pictures (removing some rivets in leu of holes to add tothe old worn look)

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0248_3.jpg

i gave him a "scarf" to tie the hood into the overall model abit more, and again more rags sorta brings home the look iam going for better

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0249_4.jpg

the ugly end is hidden away behind the shoulder-shield

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0242.jpg

i also added stakes to the cockpit door as if its been hammered shut from the outside

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0247_3.jpg

and i did my first try of magnetizing... it turned out very well!

in addition to those things, i also added a few more squished tiles under his feet, and a few little tiny shield-thingies here and there (like next to his head and as the tiniest little shoulder-pads ever. so he is TECHNICALLY no longer pad-less)

so now i just need to find some fine sand for finishing up the base, and get my hand on a new can of black spray, and i can move on to painting this bad boy (in the black and red mechanicus colors... and lots of dirt and rust)

so iam abit stuck... iam having trouble figuring out how to proceed style-wise with the dark mechanicus, i kinda just built the night without really paying much mind to what style and such i already had going, and it was definately the plan all along to make it coherent, basically do mechanicus knights and their support "crew", Which then in turn were to act as support for my iron warriors.

now the thing is, i absolitely love the "evil scientist/industrial" theme and were already sorta going with that, and then i built the knight in a sorta dark medeival style (dark souls basically as the main inspiration)

so yeah iam abit at a loss here for thematics, the medeival-aesthetic really suits the mechanicus models right off the bat, and the knights too obviously, but so does the "generic" evil industrial mechanicus style.

at least its not too late to go for either style in the end, but i do want a coherent visual theme made up before i proceed, but depending on which i choose, i'll have some models that needs to be reworked; either the knight for the "industrial" style, or my exsisting roster of mechanicus models for the "dark souls" style

speaking of the latter, i sorta got inspired by something i saw online and made a quick concept peice today out of some spare fantasy stuff

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0235_4.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0236_5.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0242_1.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0245_3.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0250_2.jpg

The idea is a cheap and creepy way to make ironstrider dragoons for the skitarii, a unit ive had trouble wrapping my head around so far more so than any other for the mechanicus, i love it on paper, but the models are crazy expensive i feel like for what you get game-wise, and something about the default model just does not quite do it for me, i think its the rider

anyway, i like this concept, its suitably weird and creepy for dark mechanicus, but it does boviosuly suit the "knight" stlye more than the "industrial" style

and yeah now you may be thinking "thats abit small for a walker" i know... this was the initial sorta "sketch" of it, and ive gone back and cut/pasted drawn on top of the image abit to plan out where i wanna go with it:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0235%20-%20Kopi.jpg

(the creepy spindly legs on a centaur was the initial inspiration for me that i found online... its so creepy in just the right way)

spectacular concept! i love the way the (not) ironstrider is looking!

i wanna see 6 of those in a speartip formation asap tongue.png

thank you! i cant really take credit for the overall concept though :p

and yeah, so do i, i figured it would be a great way to affordably make quite a few of the things

Update hype!.. i made heaps of progress on the dragoon and am happy with where its going, enough that i'd dare call him the "first dragoon"

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0233_4.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0234_4.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0235_5.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0236_6.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0237_4.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0239_5.jpg

so... i kinda did alot of reworking on this guy, as is expected when tryign to cement out a concept, there was quite a few areas i was not happy with for the "first draft", but i think i managed to sort out all the problems i had with him... essentially, i completely redid the upper body, using an old chaos vehicle gunner torso, and changed or finished up alot of the detailing

now all there is left for this guy is finishing up the base, and do alot of sculpting on his legs, maaaaaaybe add some torn flowing cloth-stuff using paper and glue

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0247_4.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0243_3.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0245_4.jpg

i tried to make him look alot more heavily armored than the first iteration, it helps the knightly themes some, and it also makes him being an AV11 walker more justifiable

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0241_3.jpg

back of the shield

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0240_3.jpg

the taser lance, made from a marauder horseman arm, dark elf cold one knight lance, and lots of plastic-card/rod bits and peices

i also figured out my color scheme after trying out a few different ideas on models... i kept liking the mechanicus stuff in blue whenever i came across it on the web, and i realized that a very cold and dark palette would help achaive the look i was going for, as well as differentiate my guys from loyal mechanicum with the red mars robes

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0248_4.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0251_5.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0252_5.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0255_3.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/bobo2605/GEDC0254_5.jpg

the photos came out alot more "yellow" than these guys are in real life, making the subtly blue robes basically look grey, unfortunately, i'll see if i can maybe do some color correction at some point

also yes, all my dudes are converted to some extent, i like the ragtag look for renegades, and it lets me build 30 guys from one box of 10 skitarii tongue.png

the nobility of the dragoon comes across nicely with the posing you chose for him, excellently done! happy.png

thank you, the original pose kept bugging me so i think changing it was the right call, the legs conveyed more of a relaxed walking rather than charging, which is what i was originally gunna go for

Big fan of that dragoon. Will be awesome to see a full unit of them!

i plan to probably make the formation for them, so more than just a unit, i love the idea of running a knight army with a bunch of dunestriders for support :p

Sir, your dragon looks like he's born of the nightmares of John Blanche! wub.png

good! :D i actually noticed that myself a few hours after getting this far yesterday, so its not just me who feel like its quite blanche-esque then... i should paint some checkers on them come painting to cement in that look

also i'd be a horrible person taking all these kinds words without pointing to the thing i ripped off for this guy, so i dug around on google trying to find it once again http://copperoracle.blogspot.dk/2015/05/skitarii-rust-lancer.html

Great work...

Also just chiming in to give you props on the Dragoon. I'm working on a bit of Dark Mech myself with a distinctly Khorne feel - you've definitely got me thinking of ways to convert hulking Khorne Centaurs of some kind now.

If you want this army to be 30k/40k cross-compatible, you might consider a couple extra 'gun arms' on the Dragoons so they can be used as Vorax maybe? Maybe Ursarax would be closer though.

The actual Dragoon models are pretty nifty - but SO EXPENSIVE!

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

thank you!.. yeah, i personally feel cavalry and centauroid things are kinda under-represented in warhammer, so you totally should! :D

and thank you for pointing out the 30k potential by the way, but iam one of the very very few guys who gives zero craps about 30k, i must admit i kinda straight up dislike it even... besides, i get to play so little in the first place due to my slow building and painting rate that adding more games to the list will basically make it impossible for me to ever get to push my little dolls around the board :p

anyway i will be making some shooty ones though, for balistarii, i just gotta figure out a good design, iam thinking something like the chaos terminator reaper autocannon held with both hands, but they are abit low down my list of priorities as i will only really need them for the formation.

and yeah i kinda love the official models for the striders, my favorite detail is probably the msot hated part; the southpark-monowheel gimp on it... The asking price is kinda off the wall though, almost as much as an onager which is also quite an expensive model

this first arm is practically done, i quite like how it came out, more or less exactly the gritty old look i was hoping to acheive, and better yet, it was great fun and quite easy to paint, too! Mostly just a couple of flat colors (like the black which is literally just flat black with some bright silver stippled edge-highlights), drybrushing, reccess-washing (to define lines) and glazing (for rust)...

the rust might look abit overdone, but its actually not quite as much on there as it seems, its because alot of the photos are quite low-angle, and i concentrated the rust on the lower point of surfaces where water would realistically collect

for those interested, Its my old self-invented rust method from back long long ago when technical paints were not a thing, and necrons were still cool souless machines (that i collected, and painted up all rustylike):

its basically just heavily stippled scorched brown on top of black, drybrush boltgun metal, carefully applied very thinned down fiery orange (not quite like a wash, as the main thing you want here is the 'water stained' look), and then a careful highlight-drybrush of chainmail

there are still a few details left to do on this arm, i might try a couple of decals or freehand some markings here and there, or maybe some yellow/black striping on one of the cables or something, but i'll see what feels right once the arm is part of its parent-model, as that will change the overall look and feel quite drastically as far as contrast and color balance goes
