maverike_prime
With the conclusion of my live stream tonight I have some updates on the titan. Well a part of the titan. Well a piece of one part of the titan. I mostly finished one barrel of the turbo laser!http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Scratch%20Built%20models/Warhound%20Titan%20one2/b98606ae-ccdf-4057-91f2-afc468dfc77f_zpsysdztejj.jpg I made a rather large mistake with the barrel, or rather the forward section of it.the inner section of the barrel was supposed to be about half as thick as it is going from the largest outer diameter (the one in cardboard) down to a middle down to the smallest at the tip of the barrel. But I messed up and cut the wrong size. Oh well. This is where I say "I meant to do that!" http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Scratch%20Built%20models/Warhound%20Titan%20one2/32337f06-10ab-4029-b146-7143d8141dda_zpsxbjdjujn.jpghttp://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Scratch%20Built%20models/Warhound%20Titan%20one2/SAM_3347_zpsgciub6z1.jpg If I'm honest, the main body for the turbo laser is rather boring looking. So I've opted to design a new body using the Plasma blast gun main body as the basis. This is the beginning of that effort. the port connectors on the side are the biggest point to talk about. What I did was first I made a series of 4 copies of the side of the body and I cut out the space for the connectors on 3 of them. I then glued all 4 sections together. I used a 1/4" hole punch to punch out discs of cardboard and then glued those to a sheet of card stock. Left them to dry for about half an hour then I went in with a 1/6" hole punch and punched out holes in each of the discs. Coming back with the 1/4" punch I then... well punched out the connectors. Little but of white glue and there we go. maverike_prime
So got some work done during an interrupted live stream tonight. So following my live stream I now have 2 weapons completed for the Warhound:http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Scratch%20Built%20models/Warhound%20Titan%20one2/811f2c84-327d-4a66-bc13-258d7b84373d_zps6xjk8zgr.jpg The Vulcan Mega-bolter and the Turbo lasers! I know this is going to sound a little self congratulatory, but I really like how both turned out. They are really kind of tempting to me to jump in feet first and get started on the plastic versions. But I have to stop myself. The major point of this particular project isn't to build a warhound titan just to build it. It's to build it and see what I screw up and what I would like to improve. Then in the next version, I see if I can apply those improvements and address the screw ups. Ultimately I want to build a plastic warhound with several features built into it including: Interchangeable weapon arms Light up cock pit and display screens Accessible battery compartment so I can swap batteries Rotating Barrels on the Vulcan Mega-bolter Illuminated inner-barrels on the Turbo Lasers Glowing coils on the Plasma gun LED indicators for Void shields and Hull points - so as the model looses shields/HPs you simply turn a dial and turn off one more light in the series. I'm still a fair ways off from that particular goal but as I progress through this project and the mark... I have no idea. Mark 4.0 I guess? Yeah, sure. Mark 4.0 Version to follow I'm also reading up and studying other things toward this end goal. So I have time. Plus it will give me stuff to talk about.Anyway, back to the guns:http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Scratch%20Built%20models/Warhound%20Titan%20one2/fe49a235-0068-4195-b199-0669b8763665_zpsbp3kqqvy.jpg One of the things I don't like about the way the Vulcan mega-bolter is constructed is how it's essentially 2 parts attached to one another. When I do the next version I'll be re-designing it so that it's one larger section with the rest of the details added to that and built up from that. Right now there is a very slight bend in the weapon where the back section meets the forward section. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Scratch%20Built%20models/Warhound%20Titan%20one2/88bbcb63-262b-4054-9fbc-a2479d770e6d_zpshvyayxcd.jpg Something I've discovered, and by discovered I mean I've never seen anyone mention it before, is based on the instructions for building the titan the placement of the joint in the shoulder is surprisingly close to the body. By surprisingly close, I mean like I can't turn the weapons more then about 15 degrees out from straight forward. When I do the next version I'm definitely mounting the joint about 3/4" further out and 1/2" further forward. maverike_prime
Guns are looking great, any chance of a better shot of the whole body? I'm afraid not at the moment. Photobucket is being really weird and seems to have forgotten that the folder with the Warhound pictures exists, yet the pictures I linked previously still work so the pictures and the directory are there... just I can't pull them up to link to them... whatever. I have shifted gears once again. In preperation for an upcoming game I decided to build the Mauler fiend I've had sitting on my shelf for... 2 years now? Longer? I don't know. It's been there and I hadn't built it yet. So I decided to build it. Shouldn't be too involved of a project, right? Just build a model straight out of the kit... right? http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Chaos%20Space%20Marines/Mauler%20Fiend%2001/f7b46fef-3b0d-47da-ae9f-502b54312000_zpsu8pm2qkg.jpg I decided to add some visual umph to the base and settled on a wrecked Dreadnought. Wrecking, ravaging and destroying the dreadnought was a bit more of a chore then I first thought it would be, primarily because I was using a solid resin base. Were I to do this project again, I would use the standard plastic base, cut out a hole to counter sink the dreadnought and built up the details using styrene and texture card. But such is not so viable with a 1/4 inch of resin. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Chaos%20Space%20Marines/Mauler%20Fiend%2001/aeaef3ee-6b9d-4a19-b8db-fab6aa1efbb4_zpsqw0imbo6.jpg I basically took apart the frag cannon to make it look ravaged and destroyed. split the barrel, broke apart the ammo belt, made a panel to be torn away from the shoulder, mounting some mechanics inside the shoulder, had some hoses and cables to be sprawled out from the now exposed inner workings of the shoulder. I cut out the wire bundle hanging under the cannon and replaced it with a power cable piece from Dragon Forge so I could tear out the targeter and have it laying on the ground. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Chaos%20Space%20Marines/Mauler%20Fiend%2001/186d2514-863f-4853-9a0f-6dfe1a0ec9e7_zpsqwzsqnk0.jpg I tried to "hide" the the 'phased through the ground' thing with the dreadnought by adding debris and dirt around the edge of the dreadnought body. Yeah... would better on a dirt or earth based... erm.. base. Not one that had tread plate. Again, if I were to do this again (and I might mind you) I would use plastic and build up the base with a hole in it to allow for deformations in the plate. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Chaos%20Space%20Marines/Mauler%20Fiend%2001/a6a70dd9-9e20-4131-867b-2fde1cc2f2f7_zpsnclyuvqk.jpg "You see this dread? Inquisitor Psychologis Ruminahui I wouldn't say the base was 'sub optimal' because that sounds like it's saying the base is of poor quality and I feel that Dragon Forge makes the best bases on the market. No, the issue was I didn't plan ahead for the base and because of that lack of planning I used the wrong tools for the job. I don't care how good the drill is, it's the wrong tool when I need a crow bar. At this point the construction of the bike itself is largely complete and now it's about details and putting everything together... well not together cause I still need to paint the rider and the bike separately. But you get the idea. The Bike was looking a little too loyalist, so I started adding trophies and embellishments. The wolf helmet with the knife coming out of it's eye socket is one such example. I haven't been able to do it yet, but I'm going to tie a length of cord around the handle of the knife, run that cord around the forward mount and tie the other end off around the snout of the helmet. Just to add a little insult to the piece.http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Chaos%20Space%20Marines/Biker%20Lord%20with%20Burning%20Brand/0dab446a-a9df-4d08-9ae4-7d3e06755290_zps92hn1mvm.jpg I filled in the inscription on the side of the incinerator body with some plastic mesh and after that dried I sanded it down. I then cut off the fuel tanks, drilled a new hole in the side of the incinerator nozzle and inserted cables from Dragon Forge into the spots the fuel tanks had been, and attached a third line to the new hole on the nozzle. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Chaos%20Space%20Marines/Biker%20Lord%20with%20Burning%20Brand/3da98636-69c5-43f5-ae03-f0b06013029b_zpsehmiq7xl.jpg The fuel/pump system for the Burning brand. You can see I've got holes drilled for 3 hoses to attach to the burning brand. This is going to be mounted on the back of the bike itself. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/Chaos%20Space%20Marines/Biker%20Lord%20with%20Burning%20Brand/05cb1072-5bd7-44e0-99b6-b0ba62e445ce_zpsqj5edh8r.jpg I cut out the hand that was holding the chain axe, inserted a length of brass rod and then wrapped 3 layers of thin wire around the rod to create the new handle. I made it longer then a regular Chain Axe to make it look beefier. I'm going to have mount for the chain axe that will go on the side of the bike once I finish the detail on the bike. maverike_prime
So had a totally un-motivated and non-productive day, well non-productive school wise anyway. I did get some work done on 40k stuff. Go the base for the Maulerfiend painted up.I dirtied/damaged the dreadnought using colors.Chaos Black primeLead belcher baseMephiston Red baseRecess shade wash with Agrax earth shade on the red parts controlled shade with Nuln oil on the metal parts something like 7 watery washes of nuln oil across the most damaged portions of the red armor. the excessive shades of nuln oil gave the red sections that dirty, and dis-colored look you see in the image. Next is to paint the Mauler fiend. I've decided to go with a Black Legion paint scheme for the Fiend with a pale skin tone for the fleshy bits. I'll post pics as I get work done on it. I've also added to my Sorcerer's alliance: As you can see I've added 2 new members to the group. Like most of the models in this group the Sorceror is magnetized so he can be removed from the Disc and placed on the base directly if for some reason I don't want to run him on a disc: And Lastly... who do you think this is? I'll give you a hint: King Breaker. maverike_prime
So not EXACTLY a work log update, but something I want to announce and ask people to come to all the same. This Sunday, May 21st starting at 4pm EST I will be relaunching my live stream, the Resurrected Hobbyist! My big goal for hosting my live stream is to inspire, educate and encourage others in the model building and painting hobby. It's not just about me showing off my work and talking cause, let's face it while I have been involved in the hobby for a long period of time, I am hardly the end-all be-all master of everything that can possibly be involved in the hobby. But what I can be is a stubborn ogre that works toward a goal! And my goal is inspiration and education, both for myself and others. I know the thrill I get when I take on the mentor role to a younger hobbyist and that sensation of glee when my student shows of something that looks amazing. Like wise I love that sensation of being the student and learning something new. It's that cross hairs that is the heart of soul of what I want to do with my live stream! How am I going to do that? Well I actually have several things I'm doing with the stream to encourage that plus several other things I hope to implement in the next year. The first thing I've added is a community gallery. This is a gallery that anyone can load pictures of their projects up to and they will be talked on live stream. Weather you're an experienced hobbyist posting a picture to showcase a particular approach to achieving a particular paint scheme, an enthusiast who tried something and completely screwed it up and want to talk about what you did, or someone who is trying their first time at taking paint from the bottle and putting it on the model, this is an avenue to post your materials and get feed back and show off you stuff. For more information on using the Community Gallery, see this video.Another feature I'm implementing is developing short 10-15 minutes segments with various hobbyists who are willing to lend their experience to the show and talk about some facet of it. These segments may be a live interview where they hobbyist talks about their latest project to build a 2k point Ultramarines army based on 'Dead sky, Black Sun', or they could be talking about how they tried to resin cast a translucent sword blade and found out the coloring dyes are super super powerful so it came out as a solid color. Maybe they want to do a segment on a particular step in the modeling process, or a particular process that they feel doesn't get talked about enough. If you are interested in appearing on the stream I would first recommend you check out this video play list to get a better idea of what is needed and how it would work then I would say go ahead and drop me a line about what it is you want to come on stream and talk about. Another feature I have implemented into the stream is a prize give away. People will have the ability to donate to the stream and when we reach a certain thresh hold in donations it will unlock a prize that will be received by a random person in chat who has donated. These prize may be a set of bases from Dragon Forge Designs, it could be a book from Evergreen plastics about working with their products, it may be a gift voucher to Games Workshop. The idea is to open people up to new possibilities by exposing them to something from that possibility. Maybe they've never worked with Resin bases, or had never considered scratch building. Hell, maybe they just wanna take a shot at building a new army. You said you were going to add more to the stream later, like what? Yup I do have intentions of adding new features to the stream over the next year. One of my plans is to include a segment I call "The Screw Up" where I show case a hobby based screw up of some form, and discuss what has been learned from the effort. This might be something that I have done, like mixing the resin for too long and not being able to pour it into the mold, or perhaps one of my viewers has a story they would like tell in this segment. Really this segment would be about learning how to celebrate our mistakes and learn from them. There are other features I'm working to implement in the future beyond "The Screw up" but they take time and I don't want to sabotage myself by talking about before I can even start working to implement them. So in closing, be sure join the Resurrected Hobbyist this Sunday at 4pm EST time for the relaunch of his Live Stream! maverike_prime
So I do have an update today. Sorry for the loooong time between posts. Between classes and my live stream I've been running out of hours in the week pretty fast of late. So new project I started on stream last week, a Paper Hammer Land Raider! Well okay, kind of in that image. So I wanted to do some experimentation with Heraldry and mural work on the model. So I pulled the plans into Photoshop and went to work. Above is a screen cap of the mural for the right side of the Raider and the Heraldry I came up with for it. When I started lining parts up in photoshop to make sure the mural and heraldry would come out right, I started having doubts about how the template actually went together. So rather then waste ink by printing the full color one only to have to re-do it, I opted to do a black and white build. While the template is straight forward, it has some issues. One of them is the side of the main body and the tread assemblies being just a single sheet of paper, it provided very little in the way of strength and warping can occur very easily. Here you can see how the left tread actually hangs over the main body. maverike_prime
So if you're looking at this thread, chances are you can see a lot of pictures are missing. That is because Photobucket changed their policies so I went from paying $5 a month for an account with... I don't remember, 100 gigs or something AND supported 3rd party hosting to needing to pay $49.99 for 50 gigs and 3rd party hosting. So I was hosting images on Photobucket and linking them here. Well I'm not paying $50 a month for that, so yeah a bunch of my images will be missing for a bit. I'll be going through and switching hosting of said images to my private server. But that takes time. Bear with me.Anyway, updates! I am working on 40k stuff again. In this case I'm working on painting up a Space Marine chapter that I've been bouncing back and forth developing for about 9 years now. The Blood Brother space marines now come to the work bench! In kind of a weird bit of irony what got me started down this particular project path was that template image that Games Workshop released a few weeks back showing the Primaris Marines. I downloaded it, started tossing colors on it, playing with some other stuff and before long I was motivated to actually paint the Blood Brothers. So with an approach plotted out, I grabbed the Dark Imperium set and went to work. Part of this project has been developing the background for the chapter. What makes them unique? What are their methods of war? What is their association with other chapters? Ect. well I am working on answering many of those question through developing an Index Astartes article covering the Blood Brothers, but that is not ready yet and in truth I'm working in spurts and fits right now. So like in this case right now these are just generic Blood Brothers because I haven't decided what Cadre I'm going to make them yet. I have some information about the 17th and 14th Cadre, more for the 14th right now but I'm also not sure I'm going to make these guys members of either of those Cadres just yet. So time and tell and all that. But as I said, I do have some material regarding the 14th Cadre to share, and that is the iconography on the right shoulders designating battle field role. Now one of the big things to understand about the Blood Brothers in so far as organization is that they do not continually use the same numbers for their Cadres (roughly company equivalents). A Cadre is formed by a given lord and draws much of its character and design from that particular lord. What that means is when a Lord dies, the Cadre dies with him. So lets say we had the 7th Cadre lead by Reaper Master Sevik. The 7th Cadre is undertaking an operation when Sevik is killed. His second in command, Les'ka takes command of the 7th Cadre and thus the 7th will continue in that theater of war until the conclusion of that engagement. At that point the 7th Cadre is disbanded, and a new cadre will be formed around Les'ka who takes the title of Excoriator, and it will be designated as the 11th Cadre, or whatever the next available number in sequence is. As the Lord of this Cadre, Les'ka is allowed to change pretty much whatever he wishes to about the organization and Iconography of the cadre, though generally what happens is the new lord will adapt the existing iconography and combine it with their own personal iconography. This practice has only further drawn suspicion from members of the Inquisition who fear that the Blood Brothers may be attempting to form a legion sized army and hiding the numbers in the ever changing roster, much like how Lugft Huron did during the Badab wars. The reality is that the Blood Brothers have been heavily decimated in recent decades and currently stand at roughly equivalent to 6 or 7 companies in total strength. First thing to understand is that the 14th Cadre is lead by Storm Master Ikara, at present the only captain level officer of the Blood Brothers to have ascended to the position after serving in the role of a Storm Runner and his Winged heraldry is a result of his mastery of the tactics associated with that position, that is fast moving disruptive attacks intended to sever enemy supply lines and decapitate enemy command structures leaving the opposing army is disarray. Not a superstitious individual per say, he does hold that the folk tales and stories of his home world of Micah hold some value of truth, and because of this he has used Mican traditional rune and language structure to signify his Cadre's organization.from left to right: Full Bloods icongraphy. Full Bloods are the Blood Brother very rough tactical marine equivalent. Taken from old Mican legends of warriors shielding their homes from invaders, the rune represents the idea of protection or guard, but is typically translated to mean "Military service". Paired with Ikara's personal icon of the Wing it reads as "I am a solder who gains strength from Ikara".Chooser of the dead: The Blood Brothers Apothecary, though the role is regarded somewhat differently then in other space marine chapters. While a standard Apothecary is charged with tending to the physical well being of the chapter members, Choosers of the Dead are also tasked with hearing the final words of the Brothers elite, and seeking out signs of the unending anger with in injured Brothers. Drawing on his linage from Mica, Ikara has chosen to pair the rune for solder with the eye of Darzoth, believed to be an incarnation of a fragment of the Emperor, Darzoth was said to be able to see into the heart of any man and glean the truth of their words. Command: The command squad for the 14th Cadre.Unblooded: The Unblooded are initiates who have not yet been elevated to Full Blooded status. While other chapters use these members as scouts, the Blood Brothers allow them to fight alongside their full blooded brothers so they learn the meaning of control in battle. The lack of spikes and the white coloring of the rune denote the 'untested' nature of the Unblooded, they have yet to truly bleed.Decimator Elite: Because of Ikara preferance for fast moving tactics, his Cadre maintains few Devastator units, and thus those who find effective service in this role are regarded as elite with in the cadre. Mican language has no word for "Devastator" or "devastation", but they have a series of runes that translate to "Hammer of foes" and is reference to an ancient figure wielding a massive war hammer against his foes. The 2/3 circle depiction of the rune is based on the belief that the hammer this figure wielded was 2/3s the weight of a man. Paired with the solder rune and Ikara's own icon, it translates as "I give my strength to Ikara to destroy our enemies."Storm Runner: the Micah system of planets are frequently fraught by terrible storms and it's a frequent response by the inhabitants to avoid these storms is possible, or to take cover and wait them out. Because of this, the Blood Brothers maintain comparatively few units of assault marines equivalents. Unlike in Codex adherent chapters, the assault squads of the Blood Brothers are not an early duty rotation for the Blood Brothers. It is a position that an individual must choose to obtain, and they must train hard to achieve the posting. Viewed with a combination of aw and horror by the majority of the Blood Brothers, the Storm Runners are Veteran warriors with what appears to be an utterly reckless abandon for prosecuting their charges in battle. Appearing to be utterly fearless, even among the ranks of space Marines because after all what sane minded son of Micah would risk angering the storm itself? The 14th Cadre currently has the largest contingent of these Storm Runners currently boasting 43 members when Ikara himself does not take to the battle field in this role.
