The Anvils of Konor - Champion Grune Thrael painted!

Capt. Jack

Morning chaps,

Been working hard to complete this tactical squad this week, and managed to finish off #8 a couple of days ago so I thought I'd share some pics;

I tried a new technique for the tentacles to try and make them less cartoony, and am happy with how they turned out. I also tried a new technique for tattered, filthy cloth, which again I'm happy with ☺.

C&C welcome!

That looks REEAAALL good! I love the paint job and weathering/grime on the armor. I also like smaller amount of taint & mutation on the marine too!

*Snap my fingers about the studs. I want to make some larger ones for a dreadnought's armor but curious if its best to make them using plasticard and just cut them down into shape. Probably a sharp xacto blade and file.

Thanks dude, I'm trying to go for some of that "historical wargaming" realism!

As for the studs, I remember GS world did a stud maker a couple of years ago but it seems its been discontinued!

Very nice -- and he should look right at home next to the less corrupted legionaries you painted before! One small thing, however: It feel his mutations would work better if they were less comically purple and looked more like discoloured human skin. Just a small suggestion...

Thanks Krautscientist! I hope you approve of the latest colour choices for the mutations!

Love the rusting on that DG marine! Your paint jobs really bring those amazing conversions to life, hope we get to see some more soon!

Thanks dude! I've pinched techniques from far and wide to get these guys up and running and I'm very glad I did!

Great work brother, that Praetor looks the real deal and the fur is well done. The Death Guard legionnaire looks better for the reduced mutations, though I agree with Kraut that the purple might be a bit over the top. The rusting on the mace is solid, however.

Thanks bud. As above, I hope you like the new direction I've decided to take with the mutations!

I love your take on corrupted 30K Death Guard. Admittedly, I've been following you on FB for some time now and it's always a treat to see a new model (and now with paint!).

Thanks! And thank you for your continue support!

I love your death guard.  The combination between MK3 BaC marines and the Plague marines is fantastic.  It really tones down the craziness and they look great!

Mind sharing your basic painting recipe?

Thanks dude! I'll have to come up with a tutorial when I've got this event out of the way for sure!

Guy #8 is looking fantastic! The amount of grime on the armour is just perfect (how do you create those brown rust streaks, by the way?), and the new colour for the tentacles is far more plausible and disturbing! If I can make one suggestion, I love the red you chose for the hood and cape, but I think a light drybrush of beige/brown (with a paint like Steel Legion Drab) along the very edges of the fabric, or even some highlights using the original red with a drop of grey mixed in, would make the cloth look extra threadbare and even more fitting.

Anyway, fantastic work! :)

#8 is fantastic but my eyes are in love with the flesh tones of his tentacles. That just looks superb! Everything about him is great but that just the bee's knees for me.

Cannot wait till you get a whole squad painted up and take a family pic of them. That, my friend, is going to look glorious!

Evening all,

So I worked hard each day after work last week to get Squad Dourrack finished, and I would like to share pictures of the sergeant himself, Surus Dourrack, and then a group pic.

I'm delighted with how they've turned out and how much I've been able to learn and practice throughout the process.

I'm now working on the breacher squad and will share picts when they're coming along!

Death to the False Emperor!

I'm delighted you like the latest addition!

The streaks are achieved using Windsor and Newton Burnt Umber oil paint and white spirit. Essentially you put a blob of the paint carefully where you want the streak to start and then load a brush with a little white spirit and pull the oil paint the direction you want!

I picked up some of the Steel Legion Drab like you suggested but am yet to try it out, but I'm sure it'll look awesome!

You wish is my command...

The sergeant looks great! He looks like a proper menace witht that rebreather covering part of his scarred head (very Vader-ish) and that manreaper in tow. The bigger base adds to his presence!

Seeing thesquad together is great. The detail and weathering looks great and shows off a gritty squad. I’ll be happy if I can just paint a squad this year that looks half as good as Squad Dourrack. It’s also great seeing paint on your beautifully made minis.

Absolutely fantastic work, both on the sergeant and the finished squad! What I like most about these guys - the brilliant craftsmanship notwithstanding - is how you could place the squad next to both a completely uncorrupted and a fully mutated squad, and it would seem like the perfect link between the two! Excellent!

One small question, though: Is there any reason why you didn't paint the mutated left foot on the sergeant like the other mutations? I'd argue it might work even better in the same colours as the tweaked tentacles on the last guy.

Afternoon all!

I'm really happy with how Squad Dourrack has been received, and it has spurred me on to get the rest of the force done to the same standard! Always nice to have some grease for the gears!

I've been working on the breacher squad now, lead by Sgt. Vermann Payne. Got the base colours down, and they're now ready for a coat of lacquer before I add successive washes and then sponge on battle damage, add rust streaks and then sort the details and bases.

I'm optimistic that I'll be able to get them all done by the end of Sunday, and will share photos when I've started finishing them off.

Here's a progress pic so far! As you can tell, my family are rather partial to a drop of wine!

I’ve been following your work on Facebook, it’s absolutely amazing. Keep it up.

Thanks buddy, that means a lot! ☺

Been following your progress on this squad on Insta, these biggeer shots make them look even better.

The more gradient colour of the more recent mutations fits in much better.

Thanks dude. I totally agree regarding the mutations. Also it's a nice opportunity to use my wet palette!

This means a lot bud. I was very apprehensive for a while about getting my brushes out but with feedback like this I needn't have worried! I want to get my painting game on now!

Thanks fella! I wanted to make sure there wasn't too much uniformity in the squad, as it goes against the varied nature of Nurgle. Also served as an opportunity to try out a different palette and different washes to see what I could come up with!

I really like the pale colour of the armour you've got going on with your dudes.

Thanks buddy! I feel it works nicely with the greens, and is a dream to weather! Glad I don't have to paint the apothecaries in white!

I remember awhile back you talking about going home (from China) and trying to paint after so long. It's like riding a bicycle but you also pulled off some wicked BMX stunts too.

Breachers look off to a great start and I see the figure from your avatar in that group. Definitely looking forward to seeing him with some color and grit!

  • 2 weeks later...

Morning all!

Last week I managed to finish off the breachers (whoop), so I thought is share a pic of the whole squad with you.

Today I am working on 5 missile marines, followed by two apothecaries, my Delegatus and then a Dreadnought. All to be done by Saturday... Eeep!

C&C welcome!

That's very kind of you to say! I now feel foolish for worrying so much about getting back into painting, but comments like yours make it all worthwhile! Plus Death Guard are a very forgiving scheme to paint!

Those breachers look large and in charge! You are definitely painting at a level I wish to achieve one day. Also, now that their boss is painted will you be updating your avatar with is painted portrait? That is the same marine, right?

Evening all,

The toiling has continued in prep for this weekend, and despite a heavy weekend of drinking for my birthday celebrations, I managed to finish Support Squad Gorst.

I'm now working on the two apothecaries, Delegatus and dread, with a day and a half to go! Eeep!

C&C welcome.

Those Breachers look amazing!  I love how even though ascetically the new DG stuff and the FW stuff is really different but you've managed to make them look cohesive with absolutely awesome paintjobs!

That's very kind of you to say! Thank you!

Practice makes perfect I say! As you can see I took your advice and changed my avatar pic!

Aw, look how happy the little guy is! That Nurgling is just the best!

Anyway, fantastic work on both squads! This army is really turning into something brilliant!

I have one suggestion, though: I think the model that's in your avatar would look even cooler with the hood painted with the same, stronger red you used on the hooded tactial Marine posted at the top of the page.

Keep up the excellent work! :)

Afternoon all!

My first event (Tarssis IV run by the Geno 52 lads Stu and Tom), was a success, event despite missing our first game due to engine troubles in the morning.

Running on a hobby high atm so started work on expanding my 1000 point list to 1750 in time for Remidium Alpha in May.

Before I got too carried away with building and painting, I thought I'd post up the remaining elements of my Tarssis list, starting with Delegatus Thand Ghorr, who regrettably performed rather weakly on the day!

I need to find a good blood recipe using tamiya clear red, so I can add to some of the weapons across the army, including Gorr's fancy hammer!

Look forward to hearing what you think!

Really nice work with the rust and oil effect. These larger marines work very well for big bulky heavy weapons types.

Thanks dude! I agree re: weapons. I'm adding 5 more missile troops to the squad but have opted for shoulder mounted launchers this time. I hope they turn out OK!

Huzzah on the new avatar and this missile launcher squad! I was not a fan of the tote and carry launchers but you’ve made them look good! Nothing but praise for a good looking squad!

Well, I sure hope you approve of the shoulder mounted launchers I plan to add to the squad...

The missile launcher squad looks excellent. Full of individual character but the helmets tie them together nicely. Really liking your weathering and grime effects.

Thanks Markus! I've got to say I find weathering and experimenting with weathering extremely fun!

Loving your scheme! Looking forward to see more.

Thanks Captain Mick! I'm really enjoying painting these guys so far!

Brilliant looking squad, love the sculpted nurgling as well! Full size pics truly do your paint jobs more justice than just looking at them on my phone. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks buddy! I must confess I took an existing nurgling and swapped a rotting leg out for a missile!

I'm super excited about getting this army to a serious points level.

Thanks bud! He does look happy doesn't he! I'm not sure he would be so joyful is he knew exactly what he was holding though!

Whilst I do like that original red, I feel the new 'washed out' colour suits the weathered and worn look of my DG more.

Dang that missile team is cool. I love that perfect middle ground you've hit between pre and post heresy death guard.

Keep it up, can't wait to see more.

Thanks Turbulence! I hope I don't disappoint!

Yeah, I see what you are trying to do with the red, of course. That being said, I still think the stronger red, combined with beige/brownish higlights on the elevated parts, would really be the best of both worlds. But the models are yours, of course, so you get to call the shots

Regarding a good recipe for Tamiya Clear Red, I've always found it helpful to start by mixing Clear Red with a drop of brown (or even black) and create the base of the blood effect with that, then go over it with pure Clear Red to represent the fresher blood. The best piece of advice I can give, however, is to use it sparingly: Models with too much blood effect on them will invariably end up looking silly

The Delegatus is looking great! Very workmanlike.
