The Anvils of Konor - Champion Grune Thrael painted!

Just found this plog, wanted to say amazing work. I think its the first time Death Guard have really worked for me. Especially wanted to echo comment above about great blending of mutated and non-mutated.

Morning all,

So it seems I've been hit by a sickness bug so productivity has taken a hit!

I've slowly been working on some bits for my extended force, but thought I'd share some pics of some more elements of the original army before I get back into unpainted resin/plastic!

I attached a Legion apothecary to both my breachers and tacticals for the tournament, and absolutely loved that FNP save! Building another one now for my growing missile support unit!

C&C welcome!

this is an amazing death guard army, I really love how subtle everything is. Great work

Thanks buddy! Just need to keep each new marine unique now! Don't wanna 'double up' pm poses!

Thanks bud! He does look happy doesn't he! I'm not sure he would be so joyful is he knew exactly what he was holding though!

Whilst I do like that original red, I feel the new 'washed out' colour suits the weathered and worn look of my DG more.

Yeah, I see what you are trying to do with the red, of course. That being said, I still think the stronger red, combined with beige/brownish higlights on the elevated parts, would really be the best of both worlds. But the models are yours, of course, so you get to call the shots ;)

Regarding a good recipe for Tamiya Clear Red, I've always found it helpful to start by mixing Clear Red with a drop of brown (or even black) and create the base of the blood effect with that, then go over it with pure Clear Red to represent the fresher blood. The best piece of advice I can give, however, is to use it sparingly: Models with too much blood effect on them will invariably end up looking silly ;)

The Delegatus is looking great! Very workmanlike.

Thanks for the advice! I'll have to have a play around. I expect I'll want to mix more browns in to almost represent a 'curdled' or tainted blood.

That means a lot Galloway! Thank you very much!

I love how inventive you've been with "cleaning" up the 40K Death Guard models to make them fit the HH timeline... sort of stuck mid-corruption. Your paint job is also very inspiring, the wear and tear and rust is very convincing. I look forward to seeing the completed force, especially the menials.

The apothecaries are quite wonderful! It's great how they perfectly fit the rest of your force, while also having some beautiful areas of visual interest, such as the verdigris and the delightfully disgusting tentacles and mutations.

Your recipe for rust is great as well, although I am tempted to say that the Narthecium gauntlets seem a little barren to me -- maybe picking out that screen on the vambrace in a different colour might help?

Gorgeous; glorious. I can only echo the praise above. I love the muted nature of your style; but the carefully-selected and applied accents keep them arresting and visually interesting.

I'll definitely echo hushrong's request for battle reports. Seeing as you're up London way, it'd be fun to meet up at Dark Sphere, perhaps?

Good evening all!

I have managed to finally defeat a sickness that had me laid low like a base cur for 6 long days, and can show you some exciting hobby progress on my XIVth Legion force!

I managed to scoop a painted Typhon second hand, cheap as chips on Facebook and some Simple Green did a splendid job of getting rid of the previous paint job.

I will eventually run Typhon in my force in some capacity or another, so I decided to chop him up and repose him, representing him after his Legion's fall from the Emperor's grace and his personal schism with his gene-sire Mortarion. During this period in the Horus Heresy, Typhon was able to experiment with his previously forbidden psychic powers, and this model hopefully does a pretty good job of showing him about to use some haggard warp magick on his foes!

Still lots of sculpting to do, namely the legs and waist, but I will also be giving him a good shave to show Nurgle's steady toll on his body, and will sculpt him a new, shouting mouth to further emphasise the pose.

I've added a couple of pictures of his base for your perusal. Throne above I enjoy making bases these days!

Thanks man! It's been an interesting process so far! I'm seriously looking forward to painting up the Auxilia and using them in games, but I don't want to rush them so am getting a nice sizable force painted in power armour before I devote some time to getting that motley lot done!

Been looking through the whole topic and what an amazing work is your army really. Big thumbs up!

Thanks a bunch Captain. Mick! Stay tuned for more intesting developments!

Thanks dude! Gotta make special models stand out eh?

Completely agree regarding the details; I had to skip past a few across the army to get it done for an event I went to recently. Even then the Contemptor wasn't nearly done!

The introduction of blue through the verdigris adds an interesting change in tone to the much warmer palette of these guys.

I've enjoyed capturing natural weathering processed on bronze for a LONG time so this was an absolute must! I really hope I can develop my weathering skills over time to get the realism spot on!

I have to echo everyone else as your apothecaries look great!

Would love to see some batrep's of your force one day.

Thanks man! Now my army is growing I have no excuse not to! Maybe even write them in a creative way!

Your kindness is too much!

Yeah, I'll have to get on it with the battle reports for sure. As for Dark Sphere, I pass Vauxhall every week so send me a PM at some stage and we should arrange a meet up at the very least!

Morning all!

Got in late last night but managed to do tidy up some of the sculpting work I've been doing on a few models.

I also managed to do some work on Typhon, namely giving him a haircut and hollowing out his cheeks.

I really hope this doesn't offend anyone, and apologies if it does, but I was going for a 'chemotherapy' look to depict the slow corruption onset by the First Captain's servitude to Nurgle, between Istvaan V and the Destroyer Hive consuming the XIVth Legion fleet en route to the Throneworld.

I plan to make his skin very pale, lined with blue veins and his eyes shaded with dark purple/black.

C&C welcome!

Write your batters like a story. Easy and fun to read.

And reposed Typhon looks great! Definitely excited to see your magic worked on him!

Thanks buddy. Will definately be cool to practice my creative writing with some bat reps!

Fantastic work on the Typhon conversion! He looks fantastic. The standard Forgeworld Typhon has always looked a bit awkward to me and your conversion fixes that nicely :tu:

Thanks bud! Looking forward to getting him finished and eventually painted!

Beautiful work on your models.  Such a clean paintjob with an amazingly dusty, dirty, and disheveled finish, I love it!

Cheers dude! Always hoping to get as close to real life as possible!

Awesome sauce! As Kizz says, the Typhon model is a spectacular improvement on the original. A great blend of 30k n 40k bits!

You're too kind squire! Thank you!

Awesome repose of Typhon, looks a lot more menacing than the stock model! I'm always astounded by how pristine your bases look, your work always looks amazingly precise.

Thanks Vairocanum! I've been doing a lot of bases recently so getting to practice often. It's a very rewarding element of the hobby for me!

Typhon’s repose is sublime. A few little changes making a huge difference. This is exactly why I keep an eye on this thread. Great work!

Stray

Many thanks Stray! If you like the First Captain, you just wait for his daddy to turn up...

The gaunt face is perfect. I really think it looks menacing too. Will you be adding any poxes or open wounds?

Also, "just wait for his daddy to turn up...", I think he would correct you that it's his step-dad before slamming his bedroom door angrily.

Morning all,

I was having a look at my Grave Wardens yesterday and decided there was one that I felt didn't fit the aesthetic of the unit very well, so I made a new chap up to replace him.

Since photographing him, I realised I want to neaten him up a little and remove some of the slime from the armour before I paint him.

I also debuted my fancy new circle cutter for his base.

The second part to this reply really made me chuckle!

I think I want to leave any afflictions to the painting stages at this point. Maybe liver spots?!

Fantastic work all around here. So inspired!

Thanks dude! ☺

That Grave Warden is fantastic! I love how you are making the HH and new DG kits work so seamlessly together! How'd you do his head by the way and which bits are those? I love that half-helm look and that angry bald head. The circular cut base is also awesome.

As for Typhus, I got that feeling from him from a recent novel. I never followed them too closely but it seems like they have a real interesting dynamic. I also think with your painting you wouldn't need to put that head under the knife. I wonder if painting him pale with dark veins would look good? Liver spots honestly make me think of the elderly.

Evening all!

I've finalised my list for an upcoming ZM event (1.5k points) and I needed to build a Contemptor Cortus with kheres and fist to get the force ready for paint.

I used the BaC Contemptor as a basis, but obviously that horrendously static pose wouldn't do!

I have two photos where I've posed the dread, having cut his waist, hip joints and removed his feet. I also removed the digits of his fist and replaced with resin spares, and I'm awaiting a DG contemptor head from a very generous follower on Instagram.

The third image is what I was able to do this evening (among filling a load of gaps!). I want to add rivets, but I could do with some help. I like the idea of rivets along the sides, and I dislike the idea of rivets down the middle, as I fear they might end up looking like buttons on a fancy tux!

Let me know what you think I ought to do! Any help would be much appreciated!

Death to the False Emperor!

Very nice, I love the head especially

Thanks dude! I had it in my bitz box and was delighted it worked out so well!

Great model and very nice looking base.

Thanks Mick! I've been really getting into making bases lately!

Thanks buddy. The head is half Plague Marine and half FW Dark Angel.

As for the painting of Typhon, I was only jesting about liver spots! Pale skin. Dark recesses. Unhealthy palor. Planning on using dark blue ink to pick out prominent veins spidering over his head.

The pose on the Contemptor is looking very promising! Markus_ has made some amazing tweaks to the BaC plastic Contemptor to make him look more like the Forgeworld DG one -- maybe his work can work as additional inspiration for you when you continue this conversion?

Excellent repose on the Dread! Seeing him marching down some steps should send loyalist cuts running! Speaking of which take planets of pictures of such instances when you get a game in!

Two things I would have loved to play is HH and ZM! That’s just a great combo.
