Hey everyone!

Back when I first read The Talon of Horus I was pretty keen to have a go at converting up some of the characters from the book, but other things (30k) got in the way and took up all of my hobby time...

Now, with the recent release of the Black Legion excerpt, I've again started thinking about trying my hand at converting up some of my favourite characters from The Talon of Horus. I'm most keen to start on Khayon, Telemachon, and Nefertari, but I'm open to suggestion for other characters too.

So, I'm looking for some ideas regarding which bits/models would be good to build and base these characters on. I'd love to hear all of your ideas and suggestions.

I'll be using these pictures as reference, at least in regards to the aesthetic of the models. Obviously the posing will probably be quite different and I'm also open to suggestions that don't conform to the art in the pictures. These pictures should be considered as starting points rather than hard and fast rulings.

I couldn't find any 'official' art for Nefertari, so I'd love to hear some suggestions for her :smile.:

Thanks for looking

For Khayons axe the high elves kits might have some of the look of that particular blade.

For Telemachon the deathwatch white scar character sword blades might be the ticket there, and something from the raptor kit might provide his feet.

Isn't there a dark elf or dark eldar hq that could be used for Telemachon's head? I guess you could use Abaddon's lol.

I think Iskhandar is almost ready to go out of the box. The axe is something different, Fyreslayer bits offer a solution that isn't directly from Space Wolves, altough you might want to use their bits for narrative reasons offcourse.

Using the Aspiring Champion as a base would be a good idea. If you want to have that specific helmet looking more like the art suprisingly I'd suggest looking at some of the Khorne Blood Warriors from the Age of Sigmar line. This is also where Fyreslayers are from.

For Telemachon I'd suggest using a Bloodletter body to sculpt armour and pieces upon. He's arguably the most organic of the bunch and GW doesn't really produce Chaos Space Marines like that to my knowledge. However with Greenstuff Elven hands and a Bloodletter body you could re-create his armour. His head reminds me of a Harlequin so you might want to find a way to put that on there too.

Lastly Lheorvine is quite doable aswell. Though it will be difficult to really recreate him as his art depicts him. Personally I wouldn't make the helmet as eleborate in real life, which really just looks a little too odd. The Forgeworld, GW or Blood Warrior helmets should give you a cool option. In terms of armour and bare hands, Blood Warriors give a cool solution again.
Lastly heavy bolter bits can be added from anywhere.

Hope this helps a little.

Dark Angels Legs (I've chosen these ones because in the art the legs don't have any bling besides the book, but maybe other legs like BoP Ahriman or Dark Vengeance DA librarian might suit your better):

Available here http://www.bitzbox.co.uk/product_info.php/dark-angels-veterans-robes-p-3484

Torso

Best match I've seen is this one from AoS Blood Warriors:

warhammer-aos-bitz-chaos-008-khorne-bloo

Available here: http://www.bitsandkits.co.uk/blood-warriors-front-torso-j-p-13030.html

For the head, couldn't find any direct match, but either the Khornate head Commisar K suggested with a bit of conversion or this approximation:

Left arm

This one is about a perfect match:

Axe head as Commisar K suggested.

For the shoulderpads, I'd go with the Chaos Raptors blank ones, and the backpack a standard rubric marine should do the trick.

The torso looks like an imperial one, so here's that. For the arms, however you may find this useful:

Or use catachan bare arms with a small jewelry chain for the right arm and this vambrace (with careful cutting) for the left arm:

Available here https://megabitzshop.com/Warhammer-SPRUES-AoS-Chaos-A-Chaos-Sorcerer-Lord

The head might prove difficult, but, if you manage to find him (good luck! here is the whole squad http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammer-40k-Dark-Vengeance-Chaos-Space-Marines-Chosen-6-Models-/172747045332?hash=item283886b9d4:g:X7gAAOSwfIxZY~im )

Or him:

With some job you could use the head(s) as a base for him.

Hope it helps, cheers!

I made these two models to represent Khayon and Lheor a while ago, and used the exact same artwork as inspiration:

iskandar-khayon-and-lheorvine-ukris.jpg

Khayon was made before the new Thousand Sons had been released, so I had to make do with the helmet that comes as base decoration on the plastic Wolf Lord ;) Still love the helmet design, though. The rest of the model's a collection of CSM and Space Marine bitz, and the legs came from the Dark Vengeance Librarian.

Lheor is based on the bolter Chosen from Dark Vengeance, combined with a different torso, shaved down beastman arms and a CSM heavy bolter. The head came from the Wrathmongers/Skullreapers.

I have also been collecting bitz for Telemachon for a while, but I am not quite happy yet. The best I have so far is to base him on a Raptor with some Daemonette and/or Dark Elf bitz spliced in. I also want to use a Stormcast Eternal Liberator head for him, as it has a very sleek, deathmask-like look.

Hope this helps! :)

I've long been pondering a version of Telemachon but so far haven't really got anywhere. I'd really do mine in his loyalist days, but the key features like the mask and dual swords should be consistent. My idea would be for something like the Sanguinary Guard torsos, legs (maybe) or the BA Chaplain as a base. I too considered a storm cast head, but they do come up a little small, sadly I couldn't find one ornate enough.

In all honesty, I thought the EC champion you did with the Sanguinary Guard head was meant to be Telemachon!!

I really like Kraut's take on Ukris and Khayon; obviously the new Thousand Son stuff has a wealth of options, but i really do like the DV Libby legs! Ukris really does beg for an AoS Khorne heads! I'm sure the Khorne AoS range has a wealth of possibilities!

Thanks so much for all of the feedback! You've outdone yourself, Chaos Forum :)

I've been flicking back through The Talon of Horus for some more ideas, and to find A D-B's description of their war-gear because it sometimes differs from the artwork. For example Telemachon's swords are described as having golden blades, where as the artwork depicts them with silver blades.

For Khayons axe the high elves kits might have some of the look of that particular blade.
For Telemachon the deathwatch white scar character sword blades might be the ticket there, and something from the raptor kit might provide his feet.

Thanks for the ideas, especially concerning Telemachon's swords and feet. I'll be going with a Space Wolves axe though.

Yeah, there are plenty of top-knots around (Dark Elves, Dark Eldar, Sisters of Silence, Space Wolves etc.). The more difficult part is the death-mask itself. At this stage I'm leaning towards a Sanguinary Guard death-mask, but the Stormcast Eternals are another option too.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Much appreciated.

Yeah, I think I'll end up going with one of the Frost Axes from the Wulfen kit for Khayon's weapon. I'm also going to use several pieces from the Rubric kit.

Regarding Telemachon, I think that much sculpting would be well beyond my ability, and the hunched body of a Bloodletter would be a poor fit for the graceful and proud swordsman. A D-B describes bones showing through his armour, but I got the impression that they weren't bursting through, like on some of the Possessed minis. I'm might end up having to go with Raptor bits. Telemachon is definitely the most difficult of the characters to find suitable bits for.

Excellent call on the Blood Warrior helemets!! I'll have a look through my bits to see if I have any spare.

I've got a few Dark Vengeance bits laying around so I'll go through them and see if anything fits the bill.

I've also got a set of the Dark Angel legs. I'll have a look at them, but I've got the feeling that they're going to look a bit to plane.

The Blood Warrior chest piece is a really good idea. I'll definitely have a look through my AoS bits. I'm not sure if it will be the right size but I'll look into it.

Yeah, finding a helmet that works might be a futile task. I'll probably end up chopping up a few different bits to make a custom helmet or just go with a suitable bare head.

Good call on the Scout heavy bolter. I was thinking of a Chaos heavy bolter with a Chaos Marauder's bare arm.

I also considered the Chaos Sorcerer's robed legs, but I think they're just a bit too small to fit with Space Marine bits, unfortunately.

Thanks again.

Don't worry, I've already looked through your collection for some inspiration.

Yeah, Telemachon is the most difficult to find bits for...

I'd love to see a Great Crusade Telemachon!!

Nah, that Champion was inspired by Telemachon, but he was just going to be an Aspiring Champion for some Noise Marines.

I've gone ahead and ordered some bits to build Khayon and I'm going to have a look through my bits box for Lheor. I should be able to make him without too much trouble. Telemachon is definitely the most challenging to find bits for. I recon I can find the bits for his swords, cloak, and head, but everything else is a bit more of a problem.

Nefertari should be alright. The real challenge for her is the weapons. She is a Scourge, but equiped like an Incubi...

Thanks again for the great feedback everybody! ;)

Nice stuff! We should challenge ourselves to a Telemachon in the August Arena! Could be fun having a warped and loyal version on the go!

I actually re-read the opening of Talon of Horus to double check his description; you are pretty much spot on. The armour is very much stylised bone, not actual bone or tendons showing through. The main 'chaotic' vibe is the face skin cloak; there really hasn't been enough time in the setting for them to be full on Chaos! As you've already noted the key feature is his sublime skill with a blade.

I'll certainly be keeping a close eye on this!!

I just found this awesome Khayon conversion on the interwebs. Here is a link to the dude's blog. Credit where credit is due :tu:

IskandarKhayonBiP.jpg

I actually really like this conversion using Ahriman as the base mini. Now I'm worried that my version won't live up to it... I'll have to give him an extra special paint job.

One thing I'd definitely do differently is use one of the larger wolves from the Thunderwolf Cavalry to represent Gyre.

Glad to help Kizz :)

For Telemachon, the raptor feet are indeed a great idea. I was about to suggest Dante's legs, because they fit the bill, but most probably they'll be too small compared to other bits, then I thought Sanguinary Guard legs which would fit ok. However I found this:

http://pro.bols.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/2015-11-23-22.24.06.jpg

Which is very cool -to me at least. So maybe this is what you are looking for? The legs are almost identical, and with the raptor feet, the same Blood Warrior torso (it should fit nicely on the Stormcast mini) and some bits here and there...

The cloack and shoulderpad looks like a corruption of the Lord Celestant on Draco from the AoS starter set,

Thanks for the continued advice! Like I said, I've ordered a whole lot of bits to make Khayon, so hopefully those bits will show up in the next week or two. Until then I think I might just see if I can get my hands on a Dark Eldar Scourges kit to build Nefertari while I wait.

Yeah, the aesthetic of the Stormcast are a good fit for Telemochon, but unfortunately they're way too chunky/stocking and don't fit the graceful swordsman look. You might be on to something with the Sanguinary Guard bits though. With a bit of work that might be suitable. I'm pretty sure that I've got some in my bits box, so I'll have a look to see if they could work.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Maybe the blood angels jump pack chaplain as a base for telemachon, with raptor feet and sword from ec kits, maybe helstrider parts for shoulder pads?

I'll have a look at the BA Chaplain, but I'm not sure that the half-half look that he has got going will fit with Telemachon's aesthetic. Yeah, I think I'm probably going to use some Charnable Sabres (I assume that's what you mean by "sword from the EC kit"?) as the base for his swords, and I'll have to check out the Helstriders kit. There could be a few useful bits in there.

Thanks for the ideas :)

WOW! :cuss perfect.

Loving the ideas so far mate. Quick one though, this is based purely on Talon of Horus isn't it? Not what they're going to be like in Black Legion...

Yeah, A D-B has just said on facebook that Khayon is going to be a bit different in Black Legion. He said; Everyone who makes Khayon form the first novel is going to hate me once the second book comes out. "I have to snap off the... Wait, and now he has..."

So not exactly confidence inducing... and there weren't any clues (that I picked up on) in the recently released teaser. I think Saern (his axe) was destroyed by the Horus clone and he wields a sword now, but I've got no idea if that's what A D-B is referring to. Quite the dilemma.

Maybe I'll have start work on one of the other characters first :sad.:

Yeah, it's a pretty awesome version of Khayon. A D-B  just gave the guy a shout out on his facebook page. If anyone wants to see anymore of his work have a look at the link I posted with the image (mostly 30k Thousand Sons).

I was originally planing to base my conversion on the Ahriman mini, but I'm going to be using some bits from the Exalted Sorcerers instead.

Thanks again :tu:

  • 2 weeks later...

I always prefer helmets over bare heads but apart from that he looks excellent. Looking forward to seeing the others.

Nefertari seems like she'd be relatively easy to build out of the DE Scourges box maybe with a mix of Valkia the Bloody. Always liked her wings for it at least.

Thanks bro! I couldn't find a helmet that I liked, plus I love painting bare heads so this version of Khayon will be sans helmet. After Black Legion is released and I've had a chance to read it I think I'll try my hand at an updated Khayon in the black of the Black Legion. I'll definitely try to find a suitable helmet for the BL version of Khayon.

Yeah the Scourges kit is definitely the way to go. I'm thinking of adding some bits from the Dark Elves Witch Elves kit too. Nefertari has feathered wings so Valkia's wings wouldn't work.

Ah, it's been a while since I read it. Strangely, even at the time, I thought of Valkia. My brain must have just overwritten the desciption. :)

You're probably right to go with the bare head on this one, the enlarged collar/hood/decoration part would just be obscured too much by a helmet.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the rest.

Here is my version of Khayon and Lheo :)
