Thanks for the compliments. These are the two pieces that will get the most work. The arena terrain is mostly doors and crates. Doors are going to be very bland. One set of crates will be green, another brown or red. Not sure what I'm going to do with the barrels yet.

 

The pipes are also really glossy. I think once I dull coat then they won't look so flashy.

Had a great air brush session tonight. I tried my first attempts at OSL with the lights on the doors. My first couple doors were very sloppy or too much paint (front left door shows evidence of that). By the end I figured out how much air/trigger pull was needed and was getting good results. I also used some Vallejo air paints straight into the hopper with no thinning and they were great. They showed me that I'm thinning my non air paints too much. I'm very happy with the results and what I learned tonight.

 

I'm calling the pipes and doors done, crates and barrels will get a little detailing and a wash and then be done. After that everything will get a seal with dull coat and my FLGS will have some nice Arena terrain to use.

Crates are finished up. I'm not thrilled with the wash spots on the green crates and I corrected that on the brown. I used my Secret Weapon Miniature washes on these and I do like them but they sometimes have a lot of air bubbles and if you don't smooth them out you get the spotting on the green. Lesson learned for next time.

Barrels are done! KT Arena terrain is 100% painted and just needs sealing which I should be able to do this weekend weather permitting.

 

The video gamer in me had to paint them red for exploding red barrels. Wash is still wet in this picture but I'm very happy that it's all done.

KT Arena terrain is 100% complete. Very stoked to have finished this so quickly and it was a great pallet cleanser from marines and building. I'm taking it to the store tomorrow and hopefully splitting Shadowspear with a heretic.

I've gotten the three HQ's from Shadowspear cleaned, pinned, and ready to prime. I'm hoping I can prime tomorrow but it's been really windy so we'll see.

 

I also figured out how I'm going to run cables for the psychic hood on my libby conversion.

 

And most importantly I think I figured out what to do with the servo skull that came on the Captain in the new box...

 

 

I didn't like the original location at all and quickly clipped it off. I also got rid of all of the 'scatter terrain' that was attached to the feet of the models (why GW?) so I can do my own basing and noticed that the skull fit perfectly under the captain's foot. Perhaps his background will revolve around a distrust of servo skull abominations, or perhaps this one has malfunctioned and was about to make noise and compromise his position? Or maybe I try and find a humorous angle and this provides a slight amount of comic relief in the grim dark.

I'd say give the servo skull some chaos icon or mutations like tentacles. ;)

Also your Captain is lacking an Iron Halo now so better fix that! :D

I think a healthy distrust of anything Mechanicus (or Inquisitorial) is a smart bet for any Primaris Captain ;) Liking sPanzer thoughts on it going Hereticus. Looks like good start.

Not sure if I want it to go heretical because it locks all future basing bits to that since I want to carry a consistent them throughout the army.

 

Is the Iron Halo that big a deal to some people if it's not modeled on? I'm all about WYSIWYG for weapons and load outs but an IH is a static thing on the data sheet. Personally I'm not a fan of them, and I've actually kept one off the venerable dreadnought I'm building.

 

I tend to roll terrible so maybe he's stomping the skull because he failed yet another invuln? He'd rather crush the skull then rely on it in the future.

Nah it's not about WYSIWYG this time. I just think it belongd to a Captain the same way the skullmask belongs to a Chaplains etc. ;)

 

Doesn't make sense for him to crush the IH though. It's part of his holy wargear and is just another layer of protection. You don't go commando just because the enemy managed to penetrate your armour either. ^^

Iron Halo didn’t use to be modeled on the HQ figures way back and when it started showing up as that god awful ostentatious sparkly thing I decided to stay old school. If I could remove the fancy cape cords and waist trinkets they’d be gone too.

 

Reasonable Marines have no use for pompous fluffery ;)

Got the recess shading done on my LT. I'm going to run this guy as my combat specialist in KT and give him a power sword. 4 attacks AP-3 should hopefully chew some stuff up. I'd like to get the model done for the Arena tournament at the end of the month.

 

I think the power sword will be black to purple since purple is my accent color. Currently I'm stuck on what to do with his bling. I was thinking of using the gunmetal blue like I did on the pipes I recently painted but I'm not sure. It's not washed in this picture but I already think it may just be too bright.

 

Any ideas on what I should do? I would like it to be different than the gray chest emblem. I could just go with steel. I'm not too sure... help me fraters!

Gold? The imperium loves gold :D

Or a bright silver with blue wash and dry brush?

Normally I'd say gold works best since iIt would contrast enough with the white/grey armour unlike regular silver/metal, however you've painted the studs on your other models silver already so I'd paint it silver as well to tie them together. Alternatively painting it blue like the knees and shoulder pads of your other models would work too.

I've done gold with this scheme and know it works because of my drop pod. I had also considered silver. I don't think the blue I already use would work. My first round with the studs was with the blue and it did not look good, IMO. I ended up going with silver because gold didn't make sense for those guys since they were just line troops.

I think your initial idea of steel for the belt bling is best. Unless you want it to catch the eyes then gold. I hate bling of all nature. It’s called a combat “uniform” for a reason. I try to get danglies to further the goal of my paint scheme. In one like you’re using I’d rather it stay simple and blend with the overall starkness of that scheme.

Damnit, I was tossing steel around but thought gold might be better... now you've got me second guessing that... sigh.

 

Maybe what I'll do is paint up the leg piece silver and the leg gold to compare the two. I'll block in the blue on the model as well so I can get a better idea of what it will look like.

 

Also I'm thinking purple for the power sword. Metallic black base, shade up to purple with a light purple/white highlight. Thoughts?
