Nice biker conversion.

Are any of your scout bikes going to have the grenade launcher option or are you lacking those bits?

I think I gave the sgt a combi grav but I'm still playing 7th so can't really comment about whats good for 8th.

VICTORY!

They are complete.

This represents all of my Dark Eagles (for now) as painted...although a box of Intercessors seems to have sneakily arrived in my house. Damn stealthy marines.

The last 3 bikers:

med_gallery_68825_13508_238730.jpg

All 5 together:

med_gallery_68825_13508_238589.jpg

Now, onto the job of transfers, basing and varnishing...

Thanks guys. I've been away for a bit and have now returned to the joy of basing.

I can safely say that painting watery pva to coat gravel is one of the most boring things in the world.

I'll try to update with some fully completed images soon.

Looking good Cordova! I like how you repurposed the scouts.

Thanks, I appreciate the comment.

And progress...

All models are based. All have had bases coated in thin PVA to seal them. I have 27 marines whose bases need a final wash, then 31 that need transfers.

Then just varnishing...

Depressing image of the ongoing pile... (although, being this close to complete is good motivation...)

med_gallery_68825_13508_355032.jpgmed_gallery_68825_13508_370095.jpg

Nearly there....

  • 1 month later...

Before the forums were down, I played the last pre-FAQ game with my Dark Eagles vs some Tau. Now its back, I wanted to share a few images.

I will, eventually, get around to photographing the whole painted army, but for now...here we are.

We played Cleanse and Control, using the Vanguard Strike deployment. He was using Tau Sept rules.

Deployment was as such:

med_gallery_68825_14963_120978.jpg

I then StfSed in like this...

On side of the force in the centre - ready to move in to strike.

med_gallery_68825_14963_635440.jpg

The other side ready, facing the Ghostkeel.

med_gallery_68825_14963_831881.jpg

I had the first turn.

I moved everything up, it looked like this...

med_gallery_68825_14963_729499.jpg

After shooting, the Riptide was dead and there were a few holes elsewhere...except the XV25s and Ghostkeel. I hate them.

My Captain and VV in the centre moved around to charge some Firewarriors to avoid shooting (or at least minimise).

Everything else broke to the right flank, to force him to move.

med_gallery_68825_14963_166846.jpg

med_gallery_68825_14963_1180776.jpg

In his turn, he ended some VV and Aggressors, as well as moving away the Ghostkeel.

med_gallery_68825_14963_628742.jpg

I then moved my bikers forwards, and rejigged my VV to be more aggressive.

med_gallery_68825_14963_624057.jpg

med_gallery_68825_14963_297974.jpg

His shooting killed a few more marines, but a lot were already locked in combat by now.

My chainsword VV made combat and fully murdered some little blue alien men.

med_gallery_68825_14963_54880.jpg

While my Captain, last VV and Hellblasters charged into a Fireblade and retinue.

med_gallery_68825_14963_524905.jpg

His XV8s (that had dropped in) tried to make a dent and did, to be fair, ruin a fair few marines - but it was not going to be enough.

med_gallery_68825_14963_251492.jpg

My Captain killed the Commander, and the combined shooting of everything else killed the XV8s. He called it there.

med_gallery_68825_14963_470913.jpg

Whilst I will miss the awesome of our StfS, it was pretty strong. I think the move is still quite good and I am looking forward to adapting...

Anyways, I hope that's interesting to a few of you...I'll try to take some more images of my whole army at some point in the not-too-distant future.

  • 2 weeks later...

And so begins the next set of photographing...

Some of these models have been up before, but there are minor tweaks to all. I will, steadily, endeavour to put all the photos up of every unit. For now, the HQ and one Tactical Squad...

My Main Man.

(Captain with counts-as Thunder Hammer)

med_gallery_68825_14980_868.jpg

An actual TH for WYSIWYG sticklers (also has a magnetised pistol arm, so he can have the bolt pistol)

med_gallery_68825_14980_73802.jpg

Counts as Shrike

med_gallery_68825_14980_117.jpg

MC Bolter Captain. He has a habit of chilling with Devastators and simply telling stories of 'the good old days'.

med_gallery_68825_14980_80809.jpg

My Librarian. He seems to have been very busy in the actual library, having not really appeared in battle a lot recently...

med_gallery_68825_14980_108101.jpg

First Lieutenant. In my head-canon, he is literal brothers with the next guy.

med_gallery_68825_14980_64232.jpg

Second Lieutenant.

med_gallery_68825_14980_30631.jpg

And, for variation, the first Tactical Squad. They very rarely see play this edition so are, in my head, convalescing after a rather trying campaign...

med_gallery_68825_14980_23675.jpg

So, there we are. There will be more to come, but I have to squeeze this vanity project into real-life, which isn't fun.

Someday, I'll get round to naming them all, as I have head-canon for all of them... If any of y'all have names (typically I use Anglo-Saxon/Old English words, mashed with real names) then by all means, suggest away.

Comments etc are always welcome. Thanks, guys.

  • 1 month later...

Thanks to a combination of a mental term at work and some rather less-than-stellar personal issues, I haven't posted for a while.

The release of Chapter Approved has reignited my hobbying though. I have put my rapidly growing Imperial Guard force (they'll appear somewhere soon) on the back burner again, to fiddle with my Sneaky Marines.

Thanks to Chapter Approved, I have 45 points to mess with, and any thoughts would be appreciated, as I had thought this army done....

So, my first thoughts are:

Storm Shield on Jump Captain.

Drop an Aggressor squad and scout squad, replace with an intercessor squad (or 2) for a heavier base.

The Aggressors are good, but with the changes to Strike from the Shadows, they are less devastating - considering people know they're gonna shift about, whereas scoring Intercessors can block a bit of board.

Any ideas?

Camo Cloaks on ALL your scouts! The sniper ones come with unfurled cloaks, but I use the rolled up ones that come in the various kits, and the Land Speeder Storm kit, on the bolter scouts. 2+ save in cover with -1 to hit outside 12" is ridiculous.

If the Intercessors are intended to camp backfield objectives, then have you considered Stalker Bolter rifles? If I used Intercessors, I would either do that, or give them the Auto bolt rifles, deploy them at the front of my DZ, and have them move and advance backwards in response to enemy advances.

Also, if you can trim 20 more points, a Primaris Apothecary will add some more resilience to some of your gunline, or at least give your HQ characters a break from sniper fire for a turn or two.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

I'm still thinking as I go, but I played a quick game today against Tau.

He brought Devilfish with FWs in, some Fireblades, Riptide, Ghostkeel, XV25s and XV8s and about 100 million drones.

I used the list above, but subbed out one Scout squad for Intercessors.

We played Maelstrom mission Deadlock with the Speartip deployment.

Short notes:

SftS isn't bad now - it reminds me of the old Scout move. I used it on 6 squads (Cap, both LC VV squads, Hellblasters and both Aggressors).

I deployed them all aggressively, near cover. If he'd gone first, I'd run back, but I won the roll off and off I went.

Turn 1: XV25s murdered by snipers, Aggressors and LC VV.  Ghostkeel murdered by Captain Hammer and his LC VV entourage. Some Firewarriors died.

He responded by shooting most of one LC VV squad away and most of the Hellblasters. I was helped by 2 things here. First, he was deployed too far back, giving me the lovely -1, and second, his rolling was abysmal.

Turn 2: I already had a 6 point lead due to objectives. Captain Hammer punched his Coldstar into paste. Scout bikers and Aggressors murdered some Firewarriors. One of his XV8 squads was killed by snipers, lascannons and LC VVs.

His turn, he ended both LC VV squads and left only 1 Hellblaster standing. Another squad of XV8s landed in my deployment zone.

Turn 3:

Captain Hammer punched some Firewarriors in the face. Some more shooting took out his central Firewarriors.

He conceded here as he couldn't, realistically, hold enough objectives to win.

--

Thoughts:

I literally love LC VV. They murder all things.

I hate drones. I didn't get a single wound on the Riptide. I was lucky with the Ghostkeel that he had put it far out to infiltrate and I got to it fast.

The intercessors didn't do anything. At all. Although that is because I used them to sit at the back. I also didn't use the Chainsword VV, although that is because everything was dead.

--

I am now thinking about maybe trying to squeeze in some Inceptors. I think they may synergise well...

Niiiice. Double LC VV?

Is there any other kind?

I have now finalised the list, having added camo cloaks to all the snipers and the cherub to the devs - made more sense to bolster what I had, rather than shoe-horn in something else.

And now, my mind has been turning with other, stupid, ideas.

I have wanted a detachment of Custodes as some sort of super troops for a while...

So...I have been playing with dropping in a Patrol detachment of Superbikerflying Captain and 3 regular Custodes. Runs to 316 points.

Now, my real question is this...

I don't want to use the Custodes models. I want to convert something as a challenge for myself. I have some Terminators that I can do a job on for the regular custodes dudes. The biker, however, is a different story. Really,  I want to try to somehow bulk out a model with a big jumppack to fill the role - making him look more Raven Guard-y...

Perhaps a Gravis Captain with pack and some wings? Any other ideas from y'all?

Ok, so following a post in 'What have your Raven Guard done today', today I am running (and playing) in a narrative campaign with some friends.

We have Imperial Guard, Raven Guard, Tau and Eldar involved.

I will make a separate thread once it is all done, and edit with pictures etc (as I have to compress them etc).

Rough backstory:

Following the opening of the Great Rift, hundreds of smaller (though no less dangerous) rifts opened across the galaxy. Each of these rents brought death and violence to those nearby. This is one of these...

Location:

Segmentum Tempestus

Planet: Oratia Prime

A world of Terran-standard size, Oratia Prime is a self-sufficient world. It contributes its tithe to the Ministorum with no issue and is largely ignored. The only point of interest is the central (and only) hive city of Argatio. Records from the Ordo Xenos refer to a Xenos structure of a door-like construction that is inert. No amount of testing has yielded results but it is marked as a site of interest and is shielded accordingly.

--

Following the opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum, several smaller rifts opened near to Oratia Prime, including one that was named 'Riler's Ruin' by local short-haul traders, naming it after an unfortunate vessel that was ripped open by the portal.

Several years into the Indomitus Crusade, a Tau fleet was caught in a similar rift and torn through 'Riler's Ruin'. Lost and without means of communication, the commander - Shas'O Y'rel - decided to launch an assault on the world ahead of them, to establish a beachhead and hopefully find a way to reconnect with the Tau fleet....

----

I will add and develop this later, unfortunately, I make all notes on paper (too much DnD).

----

Mission One:

Modified Planetfall mission.

Imperial Guard vs Tau.

On the orders of Shas'O Y'rel, the Tau forces, under the command of Fireblade Y'rana, engage a small garrison of local militia troops. The Tau recon of the area have detected a high proportion of Imperial communication being siphoned through the location and have thus reasoned it to be an important area to secure - hoping to give them clues as to how they can communicate off-world.

--

Mission objectives: Tau must claim the objective building by Turn 5. Imperial Guard must survive.

Special rules:

IG have one Leman Russ tank in reserve - it will arrive at the end of T3.

Tau get first turn.

Army lists:

IG: 618 points. 2 Company Commanders, 4 Infantry squads (2 grenade, 2 flamer), 2 LRBT.

Tau: 1,000 points. 2 Fireblades, Devilfish, 3 FW squads, XV8s, XV25s, Riptide and Ghostkeel.

med_gallery_68825_15118_522939.jpg

The IG deployed in the buildings around the tall, central building. The Tau in a spearhead formation.

med_gallery_68825_15118_991000.jpg

The Tau then rushed forwards to little or no effect. The defending LRBT killed a lot of drones.

IG moved around to get closer.

med_gallery_68825_15118_317584.jpg

Brave militia forces rushed forwards to try to speed-bump the Tau from reaching the objective, a Devilfish unloaded more Fire Warriors.

Shooting largely pinged off armour or cover.

med_gallery_68825_15118_972252.jpg

Realising their precarious position, the IG summon reinforcements, in the form of another LRBT that rolls in to the North East, where he is immediately set upon by waiting XV8s.

The Tau then swarm aggressively to clear a path to the objective.

med_gallery_68825_15118_774982.jpg

In a hail of pulse shots, Squad One is eviscerated, leaving only Sergeant Drew to hold the position. He wisely chooses to flee towards the home objective. Meanwhile, Squad 2 and 3 pull back to hold the line. Both LRBTs open fire on the Devilfish as it attempts to escort Fire Warriors closer to the objective.

med_gallery_68825_15118_415551.jpg

On the Eastern flank, Squad 4 attempt to hold off the advancing XV8s. Despite their brave attempt, they are killed to a man.

med_gallery_68825_15118_277176.jpg

Despite their Devilfish being destroyed, several Firewarriors are able to storm the command building, accompanied by their Fireblade.

The remaining defenders try to repel them, but soon realise that it will be a bloody struggle.

med_gallery_68825_15118_286565.jpg

Desperate, the survivors (including Sergeant Drew) try to repel the Tau in close combat. Despite slaying several, they are unable to and are forced to retreat - scuttling the command centre as they do so.

----

Results:

Tau claimed the objective in Turn 5, but were whittled down to very few models. The Riptide was hurt and the Ghostkeel, but very little actually died here. This was more about setting up.

Experience results: the Ghostkeel earned the Battle Honour 'Unstoppable Beast'

Experience results: Sergeant Drew's squad earned the Battle Honour 'Grizzled'

Next game:

Tau receive two bonus 'booby trap' stratagems - due to getting some intel regarding enemy positions, but not a lot due to it taking until T5.

IG receive one bonus stratagem up to 2CP in the next game.

--- Next match-up in Tau vs Eldar.

Mission:

Modified Last Stand.

Following their previous incursion, the Tau have located the location of a satellite upload location - they intend to use this and jury-rig it to send a signal into deep space - hoping for a response.

Unfortunately, the warp storm that brought them here has also drawn the attention of the Eldar. The eldritch device in the capital city has begun to crack and open - but the city's void shields hold. The Eldar hope to locate an entrance to the city to claim their technology back.

Eldar: 1000pts: Autarch, Farseer, 3 x Dire Avengers, 2 Wave Serpents, Falcon, Bikers, Rangers, Scorpions

Tau: 1000pts: Same as previous.

Deployment.

med_gallery_68825_15118_862151.jpg

The Tau castled around the communication centre, the rest of their forces in reserve (scouting other terrain). Eldar units moved on to block LoS and zoom in at pace.

After a turn of just moving around and taking pot shots, both forces were in position to attack. The Tau got incredibly lucky as every unit in reserve arrived in one go.

med_gallery_68825_15118_292279.jpg

The Autaurch pulled off a 10" charge to be in the face of the Tau from the beginning. He was supported by some Dire Avengers and Farseer.

med_gallery_68825_15118_444767.jpg

With some incredible rolls, the Autarch murders some Fire Warriors, causing disarray in their back lines.

med_gallery_68825_15118_1011417.jpg

The Tau react by repositioning forces to cover the relay point. Eldar forces steam in to provide closer support.

med_gallery_68825_15118_1232066.jpg

Markerlights spell doom for the Autarch, who is brought low. The Tau use this to press and hammer the advancing Eldar.

med_gallery_68825_15118_972783.jpg

Ever wily, the Eldar react and try to reengage through use of speed.

med_gallery_68825_15118_1037569.jpg

The Tau consolidate further, willing to fight to the end to hold the objective.

med_gallery_68825_15118_495136.jpg

In a last-ditch attempt, the Eldar storm the Tau. They kill several, but the return fire is too much for them and they are mown down.

--

Result:

Tau hold the objective and emerge victorious.

Eldar flee the battlefield.

----

Mission 3

Cities of Death Mission: The Gauntlet

The Eldar forces, fleeing the Tau reprisal, speed through the ruins of one of Oratia Prime's outlying towns. Unbeknownst to them, however, Space Marines of the Dark Eagles have intercepted the distress call sent out by the local PDF forces and have moved to engage all hostile Xenos forces.

Note: Due to the IG surviving all 5 rounds of mission 1, the Dark Eagles had 1000 points. Each turn after T3 gave the Imperium 100 points bonus.

Armies: Eldar: 1000: as before.

Dark Eagles: THammer Captain, Captain, 2 x Sniper scouts, Bolter Scouts, 2 x twin LC VVs, Lascannon Devs, Inceptors (976 points)

---

The Eldar knew they had to escape the noose of the Tau, but were unaware of the Astartes presence, they simply had to flee the area. As a result, their transports were closely positioned to escape.

Captain Algian of the Dark Eagles has fought the Aeldari many times, however, and he knew how to counter this. With fury and aggression.

--

med_gallery_68825_15118_422488.jpg

The Eldar castled up around their tanks, trusting their armour. The Dark Eagles were on 2 flanks (the Devs are in the square building at the bottom).

med_gallery_68825_15118_835698.jpg

After a turn of shooting, one of the Wave Serpents was whittled down to 4 wounds remaining. The other was unscathed. Captain Algian charged both tanks, the VV and Inceptors charged each Serpent. The Captain and VV smashed one (the blue) to pieces, but the VV and Inceptors couldn't end the other. Captain Algian refused to allow it to escape so also smashed it into the ground (Honour the Chapter). The marines then consolidated into the occupants....leading to this:

med_gallery_68825_15118_1202636.jpg

In the Eldar turn, the Autarch flew to intercept the Devastators, buying the Falcon and bikes time to flee.

The Farseer tried to kill the Captain, putting 4 Mortal Wounds on him (I hate Smite).

In the rest of the Fight phase, the marines lost one, putting the other Eldar down - this allowed the Captain to consolidate into the Farseer.

At the start of Turn 2, we had the following:

med_gallery_68825_15118_592367.jpg

All the central Eldar then died to the Dark Eagles. The Autarch killed the Devastators, but was, in turn, put down by the Captain that was with them.

The Eldar, realising they would die if they remained, fled the battle fully....

med_gallery_68825_15118_539810.jpg

Although the Dark Eagles gave chase, the Eldar were able to flee.

---

Results:

Space Marine victory.

About 25% of Eldar escaped. The limit was one third. As a result, they will receive a bonus next turn.

[side Note]

This mission was fun. It was all going to come down to killing the transports - and luckily the Thunder Hammer was equal to the task. It was a total bloodbath after that!

---

The next missions will be played at a later date this week.

Edited by Cordova

(Apologies for double post, but updating the previous one was getting really unwieldy.)

The next round of games for the campaign have begun.

Mission 4:

Following their defeat of the Eldar, the Tau forces have located a less-fortified access point to the central Hive city. They have pressed this advantage and launched an assault before it can be reinforced.

Mission type: Modified Bunker Assault

IG: 1000 points: 2 x CC, 6 x Infantry (2 flamer, 2 GL, 2 Plasma), 1 SWS with Plasma, Ratling, 2 LRBT, 1 LRExecutioner

Tau: 1250: Same as 1000 plus Devilfish and 2 FW squads and XV25

There were 3 objectives (Shrine, data point and a Ministorum Clerk) worth 3VP each and a central bunker worth 6 VP. Each destoyed unit was also worth 1VP.

---

Deployment

med_gallery_68825_15118_397372.jpg

Pretty standard, the IG hunkered behind their walls. The LRBTs awaited.

XV25s claimed 2 objectives straight away.

med_gallery_68825_15118_762313.jpg

One squad took a beating through Riptide shooting. Most other shooting was ineffective due to range etc. The Ghostkeel moved around to new cover and the Devilfish moved in.

Imperial Guard reserves (Tallarn and Dagger) moved in to the North - targetting and killing the drones protecting the Riptide. The tanks then focused on it, bringing it down.

med_gallery_68825_15118_125546.jpg

The Tau shuffled around, and threw a few shots at the IG, but this was quiet. The LRs fired at the Ghostkeel and some Devilfish, but their accuracy was poor.

med_gallery_68825_15118_921106.jpg

med_gallery_68825_15118_694284.jpg

The Ghostkeel and Executioner would have an excellent fight!

med_gallery_68825_15118_896391.jpg

The outflanking troops charged the Firewarriors holding the clerk hostage, putting them to the sword.

med_gallery_68825_15118_759899.jpg

Ghostkeel, Devilfish and Strike Team shot heavily and removed one whole squad. XV8s arrived in the North to remove most of the outflanking troops. The Fusion Collider from the Ghostkeel put 9 wounds on the Executioner.

The IG response was muted, chipping away some models from Strike teams and Pathfinders. One good lascannon roll put the Ghostkeel on 2 Wounds. The Executioner charged the GK.

med_gallery_68825_15118_663799.jpg

med_gallery_68825_15118_538672.jpg

The Ghostkeel survived the exploding tank, but this lone plasma gunner (from the SWS) took him on and won!

med_gallery_68825_15118_377322.jpg

The Ghostkeel blew up the Executioner. It exploded, putting 2 Mortal Wounds on the Fwarriors, Keel, Devilfish and the LRBT nearby. The XV8s removed the infantry in the North.

The Imperial response was not subtle. The 2 infantry squads shot and charged the Devilfish, forcing him to react. The LRBT in the centre shot at it. The Eastern LRBT kept fighting the Fish and XV25s on the flank (the Wave Serpent model).

med_gallery_68825_15118_269716.jpgmed_gallery_68825_15118_57051.jpg

The Green Fish moved away, and the Strike team moved up. They shot into the Squads in the bunker, but they rode it out. In the North, the XV8s killed off the CC.

The Imperial response was excellent. The LRBT blew up the Fish and the Guard charged the Strike squad (after shooting).

med_gallery_68825_15118_78934.jpg

Sergeant Drew led the way!

The final chance for the Tau loomed.

med_gallery_68825_15118_843878.jpgmed_gallery_68825_15118_199399.jpg

XV8s and XV25s held the Clerk and the Shrine. The two LRBTs combined to removed the last Devilfish and the XV25s, releasing the datastore objective.

After collating the points, it ended 15-13 to the Imperial Guard.

---

Next mission will be Eldar vs Tau as the ramifications from the Tau kidnapping the Clerk come in to play!

---

Mission 5

Modified Crucible of War mission: Blitz

Having witnessed the Tau force be routed by the Imperial Guard, the Eldar have followed from afar. The clerk captured has revealed a second entry into the Hive city, through an abandoned Ministorum trading centre.

The Tau are attempting to break through the sealed wreckage when the Eldar spring an assault - attempting to claim this advantage for themselves.

(Apologies ahead of time - I was not present for all of this game, so I will give a summary first then some of the images I have).

The lists were 1250 each.

The Eldar zoomed forwards, attempting to use speed to isolate a flank. The Fire Dragons melted a Ghostkeel before being wiped out. A Coldstar melted a Falcon.

Lots of Dire Avengers and a Farseer jumped out of transports to claim as many points as possible. They pretty much spent the game in a shoot out with XV8s.

Autarch and some Scorpions engaged some troopers to hold the line.

The game rolled one more turn - this cost the Eldar.

The Coldstar was able to zoom over enough to clear a Wave Serpent, and the Riptide (which had been a thorn in the Eldar side) killed a Dire avenger. This took the score to Tau 11, Eldar 9.

Turn 2 - just before the Fire Dragons jumped out.

Turn 3 - the Coldstar moves up to shoot into another Wave Serpent. The Avengers and the Farseer continue to shoot at the XV8s.

The Tau shuffle around - the Coldstar finishes the grey Wave Serpent.

The remaining Eldar run to do what they can against the XV8s.

Desperate to claw a victory, the Eldar take cover.

Unfortunately, the Tau are able to claim the victory.

---

As a result, the Tau have breached the Hive City, meaning the Imperium must repel them.

The Eldar have been routed (just) - they pull back in order to regroup and assault the Tau as they leave the Hive city.

---

Next mission, the Imperium react.

Imperial Guard and Space Marines will try to launch an attack on the remaining Eldar - forcing them from the battle for good.

---

Updates soon.
