I think the consensus is that the pistol/buckler option is the strongest, although post-IA I think the lance has made a bit of a comeback. On balance I still think pistols are the way to go though Assembly-wise, I would definitely recommend leaving the wings on the sprue for painting. Makes things so much easier, and the unpainted join gets covered when you glue them to the body.
