Death did not keep me.

Life does not accept me.

I am Ironborn and neither the living nor the dead haunt me.

-XVI Legio Breacher Sergeant Offut Kril upon his reanimation within Contemptor-Pattern Dreadnought Armor.

He is drowned in life-giving fluid.

In a sealed sarcophagus he is without limbs.

He is a corpse with no life but slumber and war.

Yet he can smell their stench.

And he can taste their flesh.

And in that freezing liquid his blood burns like fire as he tears into the descendants of Dorn.

My hands have not been idle, frater! To start I have a plastic contemptor that I had built and reposed (last November looking at my dates from the earliest pictures of this guy in my phone) that I have added some bits to his armor. There are still a few things I want to do before he's ready for paint. However, he is at a point now that I would like to show him off.

So last year it seems I got the crazy idea to repose a plastic contemptor. To do that I bought the legs of the standard dread and went to work. It's a bit sloppy but I am happy with how it came out. Aside from some touch ups I will adding a chain to a shoulder and maybe trying to copy Kizzdoug and attach mirror-coins made from a spear shaft. That and maybe some cabling running from the vox unit in the front to somewhere on his back. Also debating if I should do horns but I don't want to copy my leviathan.

Next up: This doesn't seem huge but I am very happy with it. Two land raiders! I almost built two land raiders that I got for a steal online when 8th dropped and LR prices dropped big time too. I had got two chassis' for $32 new on sprue. I felt like a kid who robbed a candy store. There are only some doors and ornamentation to add that's left, I may even try to model damage too. It is also at this point that I can finally give a huge and proper shout out to Augustus b'Raass for sending me a whole LR Lascannon sponson set from the Netherlands to Texas! I had asked him about some bits that come with FW's MK2 LR kit and after mentioning that I needed another LR sponson set he sent me one! This was a huge blessing as it's nigh impossible to find these bits on ebay.

So again, thank you Augustus for your generosity and kindness, frater!

So one is very Khornate with his emblem and some skulls on there. I want to add more on spikes with skewered skulls to the side and some maybe around the forward headlights. I want it to look like after a battle the occupants return to their chariot and just hurl skulls and trophies on its hull.

I also used a brass etching as a stencil to make my own XVI Legion/ Black Legion door. I had been wanting to do something like an altar with skulls in it and came up with this. I tried my best to kind of copy the legion emblem artwork FW does with that door ornamentation. I need to make one more for the other ride. Might try doing the round eye of Horus from the same brass etch.

Lastly, I tried painting. Tried.

gallery_55057_13897_103641.jpg

So here are my test dummies. Still need to work on the gold and the other details like the leather straps and weapons. However, I think I have a black that I like. That scale75 black metal is a blessing and it will make the painting black simple and easy.

I still need to find a smoother gold. I need a lot of help with gold...

gallery_55057_13897_504358.jpg

Dripper plugged up and as I tried to squeeze out more paint..BLOP! This has further emphasized my hate for painting gold trim.

However, after cleaning this up, thanks to shop towels and club soda since some got on my rug, I went from painting trim on three terminators in one night to just doing all nine.

gallery_55057_13897_260514.jpg

This is my test dummy I am most happy with. Basically paint the black metal onto the plates and wash with dark tone. Let it dry and then drybrush runefang steel, then wash with dark tone again. Then one more light dry brushing and a third wash of dark tone. Three washes make the black metal look metallic black without looking suspiciously like dirty metal.

What I like about this is the black is dark, slightly reflective, and it has wear on its edges. Not unlike this contemptor if you look at its belly under the eye and around the edges. The picture of my terminator doesn't show it off as well. I did want to do something similar to Kordhal's Black Shields and Closet Skeleton's Black Legion. I love those paint jobs but I just do not have the patience or steady hand to mass produce such awesome paint jobs. One day but for now I'm sticking with the metallic route...which is weirdly the way I have gone with my Alpha Legion and Emperor's Children.

I do not have much planned. I am going to avoid planning because my plans always go sideways. Maybe this weekend I will be able to prime some more minis. Primed minis means more paint. More paint means I am getting closer to my first fully painted army :smile.:

----------------

...but something else just kept calling to me. I had left over bits ...and an idea just screaming in the back of my mind...

Italics for emphasis of my own.

It's ~*obvi*~ the Nails.

They're really singing. Even more so now that I am getting in my WE bits to build my Kill Team. Kinda bummed the list I made for Heralds won't translate well into GW's new kill team but I am pressing on. I should be building my next Red Peril Berzerker soon so stay tuned to see what the nails produce!

He looks amazing and really has the intimidating feel to it, hobby butterfly syndrome at it's best !

Thank you! Thank you! And you are not kidding about hobby butterfly. I am already gearing up for a Black Legion team and maybe using one of the eldar rules for a Corsair kill team.

Thanks for the other pics, looks great from every angle! I never really liked FW Kh

Sweet, sweet contemptor Hush! Great sense of movement, you must've made quite a number of cuts. the knees are fun, right?;) Nice detailing too, love the head and skull chains!

The land raiders look promising as well, especially the icons. How did you do the chain hanging down, I can't tell if it's plastic of real chain?

Thanks for the comments everyone!

@Pearson Thank you, buddy! I've been wanting triangular studs since I saw someone use large ones on a Sons of Horus Leviathan. They modeled theirs to look aesthetically similar to his reavers and justaerin I believe. I just wished I paid attention to how I put them on the contemptor's armor. They're facing all random directions haha. I am still on the lookout for larger ones though for my Leviathan. The Blood & Skulls Industry ones I used are great but I just need a bigger size.

And I am pretty pleased with how the symbol came out but I think I overglued the chain to keep it from rattling about.

@Galloway, The bit is from the forgefiend/maulerfiend kit. If you look at the sprue with the torso they are next to the open hand bit. I just removed the studded, round end piece to use as part of a mask for an old daemon prince.

As for the trim, I am really tempted to go back and just do silver and then use washes to get a gold/bronze finish. I just hate how thin most gold paints are. That retributor armour is the only one closest to gold color I've used that goes on so well without having to do a bunch of layers. Just going to go back to the drawing board to find something that looks good enough and is easy to do :smile.: The lazy way I prefer haha.

@Shoverlovin, Thanks and I say do it. It's an extra bit of work but it really helps make that plastic kit look better. All I would say to do is get your hands on the regular dreadnought legs to make the full hip to knee joints. If you want I could post some of the WIP shots I did take while I was doing it.

In regards to the gold I am going to keep testing and find something that's quick but efficient haha.

@Traitor, Thanks, bud! I just wanted to put some bitz to use and the thought a dread with a flail of hammers would be fun! That part is also super finicky. I broke the plastic chains so many dang times when trying to put it all together. I had thought to remove the butcher cannon and have him dragging more flails behind him in a fist but I am going to avoid that for the time being :smile.:

@Elduderino Yeah, it was a fun project. Real fun :teehee: I'm glad he came out looking good so he was worth the cuts and a few bits of frustration. The chain is just cheap hobby jewelry. I just put four pins under the emblem, eyeballed & cut a length of chain, then just pined and looped over and over. I think tried to glue it down but accidently went overboard with that. Now that you mentioned plastic chain...I remember Lego used make some. Might have to look into that.

Thanks again for stopping by!

Great army and thread mate. An army oozing with character and menace with all those fantastic conversions. You seem to have quite an arsenal of bits to work with! And lots of armies going.

Great stuff mate. Keep it up. Will be watching this thread!

I find scale 75 gold pretty smooth and thins well compared to gw metallics or vallejo. I hear great things about vallejo liquid gold, but have yet to try it.

So like a lot of you I picked up my Kill Team box set this weekend and I picked up the easy to build intercessor box. I wanted my KT marines to be bigger than the average CSM (bar TS and DG marines who are big) and wanted to try out Primaris for that task. I had been planning on doing this up to the release of KT as I love using Betrayer's conversion to make bigger berzerkers. Unfortunately, once you go big marine you do not go back.

The idea here was a quick conversion for my CSM Gunner with a heavy bolter. There are a few more things I want to add before actually trying to apply damage to his armor. Hopefully my plasma gunner and my aspiring champion will be a bit more detailed and ornate with some greenstuff trim. This guy is a former IW so he isn't to big on blinging out his armor. :smile.:

@Jukkiz, I'll look into that. I honestly didn't know they made paints. I'm used to seeing their model kits in stores but Testors paint sets next to them. Thanks for the heads up!

@wiqid, Thank you, sir! The ol' bitzbox grew thanks to impulse buys before I reigned that in. And I do have my other armies but I am trying real hard to have a fully painted force and I am trying to make that the Black Legion. And I am getting closer and closer

I'll have to check out the vallejo range. I read their paint names come up A LOT in hobby circles.

@Vazzy, Thank you sir! I had those shield bits for a possible rapier kitbash that never happened. Looking at the new jumpy primaris I like how their fast rate firing bolters had shields so I borrowed that idea haha.

@Gang Zu, Thank you buddy! Much like the Heavy in Kill Team I had given him a suspensor for Heralds of Ruin to move and shoot without hinderance. I'm no too into WYSIWYG but I just had to make it happen.

@wiqid, Thank you, thank you! They are 1mm microbeads I bought off eBay after seeing fellow frater use them as well.

If you have problems with gold paint, put down a layer of brown first. I just use balthazar gold instead. You can even mix gold with a brown for the base colour (about the only time you should be mixing metalics and non-metalics).

Brown Ink over silver is quick and effective, I stopped using it because it doesn't work on large panels but it should be good for trim.

Don't worry too much about how the finish looks on the gold before you add a wash, my balthazar gold + thin layer of auric armour gold looks awful before I add GW's agrax earthshade gloss.

If you really hate gold trim, silver trim (with gold or brass limited to the shoulder pads) is a legitimate Black Legion colour scheme in older materials.

Euripedes, Ancient Tragedian from the Dawning Age of Man on Terra

Howdy folks! Long story short is that I have been in a rut hobbywise. I have been enjoying Kill Team but not my actual team model wise. I was going to bring back my Alpha Legion but I just do not care much for the scale of my previously built minis so they were stored away. I wanted to use slightly converted Gal Vorbak as Sons of Horus Luperci but I just cannot make it work aesthetically the way I want (though they may work if I use TS rules). I also started to doubt the use of primaris to true scale CSM as I found it difficult to convert it away from the newly iconic primaris look, especially with what to do around the chest.

Then I saw TheTrans converted primaris Astral Claws awhile back. BOOM!

I've been busy with visiting relatives these last two weeks. Yet I stole away some late night hobby time and got busy trimming and filing away plastic mk3 torso and cutting away the primaris chests to fit them.

gallery_55057_13897_217184.jpg

I really like it. The addition of a trimmed down mk3 plate adds serious bulk and it's old school armor. I wish I could copy TheTrans furthermore by using greenstuff copies but for now the plastic works. With my visitors returned home I got my other two specialist fixed up over the last few nights. They need some GS and some added things like grenades and holstered pistols but other than that they are ready for battle.

Two bolter marines to go to finish the astartes segment of my team.

I was looking at making Zardu Layak and his blade slaves part of my Luperci team but they were dropped. Except for this guy:

gallery_55057_13897_98387.jpg

I have changed my leader to have a powerfist and plasma pistol (with Mark of Khorne) since the power sword and bolt pistol were a bit of a let down in my games. Since this guy already had a plasma pistol I worked on giving him a powerfist.

gallery_55057_13897_213923.jpg

My sculpting is subpar so I am going to try and redo the greenstuff as corrupted flesh but for now it will do. The idea was to simply have a warped/possessed fist in place of using the sword arm the mini comes with. Luckily CSM Raptors have a suitable fist where I added a big Possessed CSM claw bit for an overzied middlefinger, as is customary for warp daemons. So I am a happy camper I was able to fit in possessed-ish marine to represent the Luperci.

I know earlier I gave the Heavy Bolter gunner a background of fomerly being of the IV but I am thinking I will do this team as a true blue Sons of Horus force with seagreen armor. Going to experiment with some greenish metallic paints this weekend.

---

Pearson, Thanks! I am pleased he gives off that look and I hope that the addition of the mk3 plate helps it further. The armored plate loincloth has been borrowed from Insane Psychopath's own Iron Warriors. It's too good of a detail and a bit to pass on.

Closet Skeleton, Thanks for the suggestions and ideas! I just hate that gold just never seems to cover smoothly, as I am lazy and just do not want to bother with several coats of paint. I think I may go with the brown paint before gold in the future. The idea of a mix sounds interesting. Up until recently I was doing the sepia and agrax over metal for various golds which wasn't bad. I just want to give actual gold a go again but if worse comes to worse I'll go back to the wash technique.

Silver is also a legit color for the Black Legion I've totally forgot about. Thanks for that!
