Primaris Calgar: your thoughts?

I'm excited for Calgar, he's been my favourite character ever since I got into 40k during 3rd. I had his PA model, I've bought his TDA model at least three times after losing/ selling armies for whatever reasons over the years.

My army now is Primaris Ultramarines led by Guilliman, so I'm going to have a hard time justifying Calgar and Guilliman, so maybe I'll just buy more marines and Custodes, paint up the marines as a successor and have Calgar lead the UM, only bring out Guilliman to lead the coalition force.

But back OT, I love Calgar, I love Primaris, I love Primaris Calgar, and those Honour Guard are wonderful. I can also now call my anniversary Captain Fabian without it being too fluff breaking.

There will be a wave of hate, which is understandable.

is it really?

Still hoping for a schism between Primaris and the old guys.

can't really have a schism when the big icons of the old guys like marneus calgar are crossing the picket line.

The wave of hate is unacceptable - things change all the time and this is the way forward now. I am glad to see the commitment from GW.

I honestly don't see a lot of hate on these boards. Only legitimate criticism leveled at the story direction, marketing behind it, and the model's downsides.

I myself am glad they finally are addressing that issue of upgrading old marines to Primaris. Calgar to me was an odd pick, but I don't mind I guess. I will probably just use my Gravis Cap to proxy him. I don't particularly like the model. But I can honestly say I never was a Calgar fan. Fluff or models.

No complaints here though. Glad to see them doing something with the Primaris. And the honor guard guys are pretty sweet.

Hate is a bit extreme, but distaste? Cynicism? Yeah, to not expect it would be pretty naive. The motivations behind Primaris are plain $$$ and yes GW is a company, for profit, blah blah, but there will always be those who dislike them because of what they really represent.

I dont own one, and wont, even though I have several thousand points of Blood Angels. If they cannot do better than this Calgar, which is a pale shadow to the last sculpt...why would I upgrade any of the classic marines I have?

I'm amped, I have a pile of unassembled and unpainted Primaris who were just waiting for a Primaris Character. Should I paint them old school Ultra style?

They look awesome in old school colors.

These are my inspiration:

Well, I guess the loyal marines in the traitor legions beg to differ ;)

I will stay with the terminator Calgar and use it as Primaris if I have to.

The model is okay - I still dislike the plethora of hoods on the Gravis style models, they don't remind me of Terminators, they look more like faux-psychic hoods - and the air intake vents are too much. Just give him a bigger halo or something. The updated retro-vibe is nice, but not enough to sell me wholly on the model.

On the process - Emperor help me, I hope they didn't make it something stupid. I'm glad that they included the bit about it almost killing him, and honestly, I hope that it does actually kill one of the big Four main chars when they try it on him. It would lend the idea a bit more gravitas. It's also nice that they are finally giving us the actual fluff of a Primaris upgrade, making it really part of the universe, not just a designer slip of the tongue in a video and then silence about it with it never actually featuring in any fluff until now. I just hope it's not some truly stupid process and remains actually dangerous.

I'm interested to see what exactly they will have Calgar doing on Vigilus, especially considering what was almost worth his life to "upgrade"? And does this also feature Cawl?

Mind that Calgar might not even be a complete primaris - the Swarmlord reduced him to just a torso, so he might not have the extra attack that represents the Sinew Coils cause he has limbs to put them in :teehee: . Then again, he has the bionics so I'm probably just being a worrywart.

People still trotting out that piece of fluff...

Can someone actually show me that part thats not in WD 97? :)

So papa Smurf has become PrimarisPa Smurf. Certainly get a smile from the pose personally but if what another said is true, about time he found his freaking helmet! (wears mega terminator armour...forgets helmet...).

Now the question is who will get into the big ol' machine of primaris making. I don't think ANY of the Dark Angels will, not sure about the availability of the machine but maybe something about their dark past will not allow them to use it (possibly their guilt making them "too weak" to take it). Blood Angels I would imagine would be far and few, maybe mephiston but other than that, the risk of it triggering black rage and red thirst could be real (considering it is an ordeal, the lead up to it and the actual event could cause it trigger).

Space Wolfs...meh, they just throw their thunder wolfs into it as well because screw regulations and rules and actual order along with being reasonable beings for any reason, heck I would wager they would throw bjorn in their just for the giggles (and Bjorn would do it because screw it, been alive 10k years and survived worse and now I have little more than a metal tin box to live in, what does he have to lose really?)

The rest of chapters I would think would readily use it more as a "pseudo-Dreadnought" process. Sort of the "well, he's beyond dreadnought saving BUT he isn't beyond primaris machine process" or vice-versa, we could see the birth of a new unit in a sense. "Revengers" "Retributors" or something equally edgy for marines who have been brought back from the brink by means of this process and are actually more potent than normal primaris (mainly from experience in the real 40k unlike what I believe most primaris are normally).

Not sure how I feel about it right now. I think it would have been braver to replace him with a true Primaris, if they are going this route they might as well get a fresh start.

If they had done that there would be a mass panic right now about how all beloved characters would be squatted in the future.

I'm sorry to reply to this with just a simple one sentence reply, but considering these chapters you've mentioned already have Primaris marines aplenty, the arguments ring false in my opinion. Or is Azrael weaker than the existing DA hellblasters? Does Dante pose risk to black rage over existing Blood Angel agressors? Etc.

If you ask me nothing stops the process now, its just a matter of when.

Edit: oh and the matter of the helm:
