Valkia the Bloody
After I have been lurking on this forum for too long and admiring everybody's projects, I decided it was about time I did something about all these unpainted/ half-painted figures sitting on my shelves collecting dust. So I joined up and start this thread to hopefully encourage me to get going and keep going. I have been in the hobby for more than 20 years now and collected, painted and played on and off quite a few times. Hoping to get back into it. Here I want to collect all my painting projects concerning loyal Imperial servants. I got the Burning of Prospero box when it first came out and started working on it, and over the years I have also added some other miniatures to it so I could use the growing Thousand Sons army also in modern games of 40k. For use as generic red painted Space Marines. I also have some forces of the Inquisition still waiting in the wings, half assembled, or half-painted. It is about time some of it actually gets done! So here we go. This is how far I got: Some Tactical Squads Terminators: Contemptor: A Librarian from Scibor Miniatures: These guys because I really adore the miniatures: MithrilForge and Tichinde 2 Back to top
Valkia the Bloody
I also got them a few scouts. I know, not keeping with the Heresy theme, but fine as generic loyal red marines. :p And a few finished members of His Majesty's fine Inquisition: So far I have one Inquisitor finished (Greyfax and Eisenhorn waiting in the wings) and a squad of Inquisition Storm Troopers: Custodian Guard And the Sisters of Silence: Just today I also finished a few more command/ veteran models for these guys. These are now the models it took me the longest time ever to paint. I got these SIX years ago (!!) when I was last actively playing... and even primed them in the colours of my army back then (the "Pink Angels", a Blood Angel Successor). While I have sold the Pink Angels army, I did hang onto these guys. And today, at long last, they were finally fit for duty. And a real blast from the past, an old metal veteran: LameBeard, MithrilForge, Tichinde and 1 other 4 Back to top
Valkia the Bloody
Still missing from the Burning of Prospero Box is Ahriman- who I have started but not finished yet. Also a squad of primed converted Space Wolves. And of course there is also this guy: I really hope I can motivate myself to keep going. :D And since I got tired of only painting red, I also painted up this guy this week, kind of as a palate cleanser :p (Bought him on a whim at the local supermarket since he is part of that miniature collection thing) MithrilForge, Quixus and Tichinde 3 Back to top
Valkia the Bloody
Right, I thought I re-activate this thread since my Chaos thread will not really fit my Imperial or Inquisition exploits. :p I am very hyped about the new Kill Team "Into the Dark" release. I like pretty much everything about it, the two original new teams, the setting, the terrain. I just LOVE the haunted derelict spaceship vibe. This was the first GW release this year that got me excited and made me pre-order (last time this happened was with the Indomitus box). I am looking forward to getting my box next week, GW have already dispatched it. Well, as long as I wait for the Kill Team box to arrive, I decided to do some kit-bashing. I just have finished re-reading the whole Inquisition series by Dan Abnett (starting with Xenos, finishing finally with Penitent, still some of the best ever Black Library books) and so I just feel I should do some more with the Inquisition again. So I decided to convert an Inquisition Kill Team. As far as I can see, the Imperial factions in Kill Team are severely "underdogged". Yes, the Starstriders have a doggy, but the Kroot now have two, and that seemed unfair! So my Kill Team definitely needed dogs. Therefore, I have decided to convert the AoS Witchhunters into a 40k Inquisitor retinue. This is what I came up with. WIP- I am still waiting for the "In the Dark" box to arrive for the rest of the bits I want to use. I also want to check out the rules and actually make up my own rules and background and lore for this home-made team (they might become pretty OP, though....) . And who knows, maybe we get an Inquisitor team in one of the upcoming releases? So here we have Inquisitor Hector Sebastian, of the Ordo Malleus. He wields a set of old fashioned pistols shooting silver bullets as well as a power-hammer. I will add one of the re-breather heads from the Kill Team box and give him his signature leather hat. I already added a purity seal which will act as his rosette. The whole team also keeps the AoS stakes, but they will be silver stakes for slaying Warp abominations- pretty much like the crossbow of Inquisitor Greyfax, which also shoots silver stakes. Therefore, I will give my whole team a +1 to kill on Warp Abominations and actually think about also getting the "Gellerpox Infected" team as their nemesis opponent. By his side is Interrogator Eudora Demarr, keeping her trusty flamer ready to purge and cleanse the Imperium of warp spawn. She got horribly disfigured while battling an incursion of Tzeench horrors on her first mission with Inquisitor Sebastian, and since then, she is wearing an ornate silver mask (the head is from one of the AoS mages, the flamer is from the Sisters of Silence sprue). The next operative, Phillip Ironclad, I left as he comes in the box. His home-made battered armour, the creepy iron mask and the crossbow shooting explosive bomb-bolts just fits also perfectly into the 40k universe, especially with a unique inquisitorial kill team. He will act as the grenadier of the team, the explosives expert. Then there is Elena the Silent - she is a Sister of Silence. She was the sole survivor of a disastrous kill team operation of the Ordos against a Chaos cult on an important Imperial Hive World. Further information is classified, but Inquisitor Sebastian saved her life, he was send to investigate the disappearance of the kill team and found her more dead than alive, surrounded by piles of dead demon worshippers. The armour she wears now is cobbled together from bits she has found on various battlefields and she has sworn to follow Inquisitor Sebastian in his crusade to repay her dept of honour. She is a pariah, a psychic blank, and has an aura that will protect her team from foul magic and demonic ambushes. I used a variety of left-overs in my bits-box to put her together, she even has two different shaped legs from two different kits. For arms, I will use the sword and pistol arms that come in the new Kill Team box. Hubert the Tank is the muscle of this operation, he wields a huge axe which will not be stopped by neither closed doors nor grinning demonic faces. He will get one of the Navy rebreather helmets from the new box. And now the stars of the whole operation- Fritz and Max, the loyal, cybernetically enhanced hounds. Everything is better with dogs, right? Fritz wears a battle collar around his neck as well as some supplies and grenades on his back, and is conditioned to battle vile demons face to face. Max was mauled by a Khorne bloodhound on a previous mission, so he now has an augmented bionic eye on his scarred right side. He also has a surgical implant in his digestive tract- basically a mechanical omophagea. I really like Ian Watson's "Space Marine" and the whole description of how the Space Marines learn to drive a Titan by eating the brains of the dead crew made a big impact on me. What a great idea! So this is basically what Max is for- devouring bits of the enemy, and in the process, the Inquisitor can read out some basic information (location of the enemy, size of the force, short term memory) on the panel of the implant on the dog. Rules wise- as soon as the team has killed an enemy, Max can feast on them and from then on, the team will not fall victim to any ambushes or surprises anymore- they will know what and who is coming. I will post an update as soon as my "In the Dark" box has arrived and I have finished putting these guys (and the contents of the box!) together . Looks as if Kill Team might become my project for this autumn. The Dark Gods will not be pleased because there is still A LOT of my Night Lords army unpainted... Besides these guys, I still have some other Imperial operatives in my unpainted pile of shame.... maybe my motivation and hype can also make me finally paint them up! I really hope we will get the possibility of playing an Inquisition Kill Team in one of the upcoming releases! I have Inquisitor Eisenhorn, Greyfax, the Imperial Assassins as well as the Knight pilot (the Knight Model is still in it's box, unassembled... it will be a project for another time) Edited September 10, 2022 by Valkia the Bloody Rusted Boltgun, CaptainFrederickson and MithrilForge 3 Back to top
MithrilForge
Cool work here, I love your Thousand sons and the kit bashed Killteam stuff looks great!, Look forward to seeing you paint "into the dark" Cheers, M. Valkia the Bloody
So I just finished painting 4 of the newly assembled Inquisition team. I am especially proud of Max, the cyborg dog. I also did some more treasure hunting on Ebay, to add operatives to my Inquisition gang. So watch this space! Valkia the Bloody
And, my Into the Dark box has arrived. This has made my weekend. I am very excited, this is easily the biggest and heaviest box I have ever bought from Games Workshop. I am very excited about putting it all together and then painting it all up. I even bought some rust pigment- I have never tried or used it before, so I thought all these terrain panels would be ideal to try it out. Small steps. I got stuck in right away- put some more bits (from the brand new box) onto the Inquisitor and his muscle. And I played around with the bases. I kind of like the minimalist bases of the box art. So I just scraped the surface of the bases, added some dents and scratches and small debris. So it looks like the dirty floor of a rotting space ship. I am not sure yet about the colour scheme I will be using for the Imperial Navy, but for the Kroot, I think I will take some ideas from the Yautja (Predators). Anyways, this will be a nice little project for the upcoming long, dark and cold autumn and winter nights! Rusted Boltgun
I like your idea with the bases - a lot easier than cutting up plasticard, etc. I think the Kroot will suit the Predator scheme. I had been going to go green with them (as if they'd had a diet of Orks) but I'm playing around with colour schemes. The Gallowdark will be a great setting for your Inquisitorial band! I had a look how other people online did the spaceship bases, and to be honest, I have worked with plasticard before. Back in the day when I did an Ogre Kingdoms army that walked over broken ice panels. Needless to say, this experience drained my motivation to do something like it again.... So yes, I took the easy way out (maybe I am lazy, but also working long daytime shifts and just could not be bothered). Not sure how it will look when all finished up. At least I think I got it decently scratched and edged. Will add some hazard stripes and Huzzah! Rusted Boltgun 1 Back to top
Valkia the Bloody
Hurray for Ebay. Got a few more bits (and even more are on the way) for the Inquisitorial team as well as the old metal figure of Ironhand Straken. I always wanted Straken, and now he can come onboard and do some serious alien hunting! (I put him on a sand base, because that way, he will fit together with my Gaunts Ghosts/ Guard Team which is on forest bases) And this is my Inquisition acolyte wielding a shotgun. Still need to think up a name and a backstory. All in time. Talking about Gaunts Ghosts... I am a huge fan of Dan Abnett and so I had to get the miniatures. I think I have not yet shared my take on the Gaunts Ghosts + Ripper Jackson, which I did a while ago. Here they are: Ironhand Straken will feel right at home with these guys!! I also had a nice relaxing time, listening to audio dramas and putting the Navy Team together. I like the miniatures- they are characterful and have a lot of customization options. And I am even more excited about the Kroot, because they ooze even more menace and character! This guy just oozes character! Valkia the Bloody
Some more work done! Finished the Kroot team. They are amazing models, full of character and menace. Cannot wait to paint them up. There was also a chainsword as part of the bits to decorate the Kroot.... No idea what a Kroot is supposed to do with a chainsword, actually... so I used it on the Inquisition acolyte I build yesterday LameBeard, MithrilForge and Grotsmasha 3 Back to top
Valkia the Bloody
And here are another two operatives for my Inquisitor! A healer/ plague doctor type and a Mechanicus sniper. Not a fan of this 3D printed business.... it is too brittle for my taste and difficult to work with if you have big sausage fingers and two left hands! Kit-bashing plastic is so much less hassle. But I do like these sculpts (they are from Stationforge). Rusted Boltgun and LameBeard 2 Back to top
Valkia the Bloody
Right, so the rest of my Ebay orders has arrived today. I already had thought about what I would do with them, so I got stuck in and put some stuff together. First off, a few Kromlech Servo-skulls, to be used either for my Inquistion team or as objective markers. I also had ordered some cheap old Kroot plastic bits (legs and bodies of the old kit) to use with some of the new bits (heads, arms, decorative bits) for some kitbashing. I wanted a few more Kroot operatives, and especially, I wanted to build the grenadier, another melee character and the guy who re-loads his rifle. Here they are. Reloading the rifle: Another Kroot Cut-Skin or maybe even Kill-Broker Is there such a thing as too many knives? And the grenadier. Also- can there be such a thing as too many grenades? I actually might have to name him "Strax" after the weird little Sontaran in Doctor Who who REALLY loves his grenades ( in many ridiculous shapes and sizes).... Oh, yesterday I even got a bit of painting in on Straken (for the Mental Health Challenge). It is a start. Hopefully, now that I have all my bit together for the Kill Team characters, I will get some more painting in this weekend. In other news... I finally took the plunge. After more of 20 years in the hobby, I have finally ordered a wet palette. I think this will be a game changer for my painting efforts. Valkia the Bloody
Finished Ironhand Straken who I had painted up for the Mental Health challenge. He will fit right in with my other Guard characters who I painted in the same camo pattern. Now I will be going back to assembling (and eventually basecoating) all that lovely Space Hulk terrain. Such an intimidating pile of plastic! But what terrain could be cooler and more iconic than Space Hulk terrain? There is just such a lot of it.... Valkia the Bloody
Right. I put a nice audiobook (Steampunk Horror) on and set about putting all that awesome terrain together. It has so many details and just gives a great "haunted derelict spaceship" vibe. And I like that you can just take it apart and assemble it in any shape like LEGO. I just love it. Also, my wet palette has arrived. I really look forward to trying it out. It will be great for mixing paints and maybe help me in my attempts to try out blending. Valkia the Bloody
Have been playing around with some bits on my painting desk. Tonight, I finished some servo-skulls. I am not sure yet if I want to use them as objective markers or as part of my Inquisition Team. I also put some thought into the bases for the Space Hulk (Into the Dark) bases for my Kill Teams. I wanted to have them metal, and thought on some markings and hazard stripes. I think I will also add some rust effects and / or blood and gore in future. This is only a rough draft WIP of my general idea. There are also some more members of the Inquisition waiting in the wings for some more paint work: Then, I spent again too much time and money on Ebay. I got some inks for painting ("Inktensity") because I really miss the old Citadel inks and have been looking for a replacement. These new inks supposedly dry matt, as opposed to the more shiny finish to the old Citadel inks. I will have to try them out to see how they perform. I also bought the Age of Sigmar Blackpowder Pirates (or whatever they are called). I have no idea yet what I will do with that pirate ogre- maybe I will hack him apart and use him for either Chaos or Inquisition, or maybe he gets lucky and is painted just for fun as he is. He is actually quite a nice characterful model. As for the two grots- I thought I might add them to my (in the future) to be assembled Imperial Knight. As some comic relief. But why did I get this box at all? Well, it contains these two guys: When I saw the Kroot in the Kill Team box and the fact that there was no added bird figure to represent the Pechra bird- I was disappointed. You have to use a token to represent the Pechra in the game! How lame is that! So I was looking for a decent aggressive looking bird model to represent the Pechra of the Kroot Scout. And I think I found it. Yes, it has only one pair of eyes (different to the bird perched on that Kroot rifle) but one cannot have everything and this is still 100% better than a lame token. So yeah, meet the Pechra! Also, that monkey..... I will paint him up in orange. He will be a baby Jokaero that was rescued by my Inquisitor. So my Inquisitor will be travelling with quite a menagerie.... Rusted Boltgun and MithrilForge 2 Back to top
Valkia the Bloody
The weather yesterday and today was inviting a nice contemplating weekend inside, with cozy warmth, some great audiobooks and trying out new painting techniques! My wet palette had it's first real use, and I tried out painting clothing with a sponge (for texture and light and shade). It is still a long way to being able to even think about aspiring to the magic the real masters of miniature painting are performing- just looking at some of the work in this forum frequently makes my jaw drop! But at least I am widening my horizon an try out new things. And here they are, my own personal self-created, converted and painted Kill Team of the Imperial Inquisition. I think they look suitably menacing. And they brought along their arsenal of servo skulls, cyborg dogs and a baby Jokaero. Heretics, beware! Next up, I will try out some ideas for the Space Hulk terrain on the distance markers that came in the Kill Team box. And I also got my other Inquisition stuff (Eisenhorn, Greyfax and the assassins) out from my shelf and added them to my immediate painting pile- which also includes the Navy and Kroot Kill Team. The Inquisitors and Assassins have been sitting on my shelf for 4-5 years now, it is about time something is done about it. It is slowly getting embarrassing. Valkia the Bloody
This afternoon I was playing around a bit more with my painting sponges as well as the rust pigment. Just to try out the ideas I have for painting the Space Hulk terrain. I was painting up the measuring gauges that came in the Kill Team box. This is what I came up with: I think this came out quite well and might fit perfectly for a derelict rotten spaceship. Rusted Boltgun
Nice work with the gauges, I have spent far too long debating shapes Vs coloured shapes. Partly because I'll be playing with an 8 yr old! Are your dogs going to be running the Canid rules? Is the Jokaero a spotter like the Pech'ra? I really like your Plague Healer with the bandolier and glowing eyes, that blue really works across your models. Hope you enjoying your new wet palette! Enjoy painting your Kroot, looking forward to seeing some colour on them. Valkia the Bloody 1 Back to top

Ah yes, I see, if playing with children, I would have to make up something more appealing.... my nieces and nephews are still a bit too young, though. But at least I have already taken them to the local Warhammer store and gifted them a few painted figures. Sadly, my siblings do not share my enthusiasm.... but I keep up the hope. I am only slowly working through the rules.... I am not sure how I am going to make up the rules for the Kill Team yet! But using the Jokaero like the Pechra would be a good idea. And I would also not mind the "Fetch" ability of the Kroot hounds! Still thinking about which colours I should go for with the Navy and the Kroot. Not sure I will keep the Inquisition colours for the Navy.... but one thing for sure, I like the glowing blue eyes, so these are going to stay. For now, I started on some of the terrain. Total change of pace, since these are large surfaces, it feels very slow going. I hope I am up for the challenge I set myself. Valkia the Bloody
On Saturday, I took my nephew (7) for an afternoon of shopping- my birthday treat to him. He got himself some really cool toys, we had some junk food, and of course we visited the store anniversary of the local Warhammer store, where he was able to get some nice beginners painting lessons. I think he had a great time! And for myself.... I got myself the store anniversary exclusive model which fits perfectly to my current line of projects! Inquisitor Cartavolnus! Plus, today, we had a wonderful sunny afternoon, and it was a joy enjoying the sun on the balcony, while painting and listening to some exciting audio drama. I started painting up some of the Gallowdark terrain- and really tried to express the vibe of a haunted, derelict spaceship in the deep dark of the void, which is hiding treasures and horrors for anyone who dares to enter. Needless to say, I had a lot of fun playing around with my dirt, grime and rust colours! I really went to town here. I absolutely LOVE this terrain. It has sooo much detail. I already have the next batch in the works- I bought some of the recent 40k terrain that came in the starter boxes, for HALF PRICE on Ebay (I could not resist). I think if I paint up the "normal" terrain the same way as the Gallowdark pieces, it will fit together well. Of course all this could be part of the same space hulk- after all, some of the imperial ships have halls the size of cathedrals inside them, so that terrain could just be part of one of the inside large halls of an imperial ship! For some time now, I wanted to do terrain, but always was a bit intimidated by the sheer volume and size of it. But I decided to power through it now, just to set myself a personal challenge. It also helps that I can do a "quick and dirty" painting style, using drybrushing and washes and pigments, and I do not have to pay too much attention on "making mistakes" because these mistakes are actually adding to the vibe of the derelict pieces. So here is the WIP of the burst spaceship fuel pipes: Rusted Boltgun, MithrilForge, DaBoiKyknos and 1 other 4 Back to top

No worries. I am still using Citadel paints for the most part, and some of my paints are already 10 years old, so by now, they have changed names. Undercoat Chaos Black spray. For the metal bits: base castellax bronze, drybrushed / sponged with leadbelcher and then again with the lighter ironbreaker. For the grey: base Mechanicus standard grey then drybrushed / sponged with lighter fortress grey. Then I added the details like the blood red switches and green cables. Then I applied a very liberal amount of Nuln oil. I tried with my beloved Agrax Earthshade, but I just did not achieve a satisfying contrast, and the black wash looks better on industrial terrain to be honest. Then I used a sponge to lightly apply vermin brown (which now is called Scrag Brown I believe). This is the light rust/ rust dust on the surfaces. For the rust in the recesses, I used Green Stuff World "Light Rust" liquid pigment. That stuff is a amazing. Love it. I even ordered some more different shades of their rust pigment, so I can experiment a bit more with it. I hope this helps? All quick and dirty and nothing too elaborate.
