Just finished the Kill Team barricades as well as the two generator pieces.

This leaves me with all the large terrain pieces still to do!

But might take a break from painting terrain and start on the first half of my Navy Breachers Kill Team!

Have to stick to my plan on alternating between painting terrain and painting the teams, to keep my motivation up (and keeping the more interesting Kroot for later).

1280484321_BreachersWIP1.jpg.2f13990509b493310ecc7e7dc3932c82.jpg

Since the weather is pretty average, I decided to stay in and work some more on my Kill Team box.

And I made some progress, I finished the first half of my Navy Breachers.

I tried to make this team look grim dark and dirty. After all, they are sneaking about on a haunted, derelict and rusted spaceship. In every dark corner, there is another horror!

They should also fit in thematically with the terrain I am painting.

I am copying this over from the "Knives in the Dark" thread, since part of the challenge is creating some backstory for the participating Kill Teams.

Everybody, meet Mira's Marauders.

The team is lead by Sergeant-at-Arms Mira Holden. They were previously used to patrol shipping lines at a remote corner of Segmentum Obscurus.

This is where they reached infamy (and earned their nickname), since they were overzealous in fulfilling their customs duties and bringing in the tithe for their protection services from merchants traveling the galactic routes. If the merchant in question did not pay the fines, Mira had no qualms "securing" the dues by any means necessary.

Their overzealous demeanor lead to some embarrassment for the local fleet admiral, since a wealthy merchant patron, and personal friend of the governor of one of the local agri-worlds, came face to face with Miras's trusty bolt pistol.

The local fleet admiral was therefore only too happy to provide the zealous services of this team to the inquisition, who requested assistance in examining a recently appeared space hulk. Now Mira's Marauders proudly work for the Inquisition and act as voidsmen on a fast black Inquisition strike cruiser- ready to take on any threat to the Imperium.

Tried to improve the face of my Kill Team leader Mira a bit.

I suffer from Agnosia (basically dyslexia in recognizing and reading faces), so painting faces is a nightmare.

Faces do not come together for me- even if I look into peoples faces, in conversations, I have to look away after a while (this is regarded as rude, I know). However, it is highly uncomfortable for me, since if I look at a face for too long, it is as if bits are shifting around. Pretty hard to describe. My hardware is all in place and functioning perfectly, sadly, my factory settings came with a faulty piece of software, it seems.

Same issue is when painting faces- I know there is eyes and a nose and a mouth- but working on them too long, it is near impossible for me to put the highlights right.

I just can tell that something "looks off" but find it hard to tell what exactly it is.

There is a reason I prefer helmets!

Anyways, Mira's face just looked off, but I think I managed to improve upon it. Looking at it now, I am actually kind of proud of my effort- not too bad for someone who cannot process faces!

For now, not going to try eyes, though.

I honestly do not know how I will manage with the Kroot (no helmets) - this will be another challenge I set up for myself. This whole Kill Team box is nothing but challenges, it seems.

Nice work with the re-touched Mira, I don't think faces aren't easy at all.

I reckon you'll be OK with the Kroot - really strong brows and cheekbones define the face, let the paint do the work!

Just did a small bit of terrain (there still is A LOT to do.... but I figured I did not need to do it all at once).

1343521969_Gelndefinished1710.jpg.1e5d7a8f7aecb28a7f1248b509641925.jpg

I also did a little fun thing at the side and painted up the Warhammer Quest Halloween objective markers.

Just to get into the October Halloween spirit a bit!

Plus, these things look pretty sweet, add some nice bit of seasonal atmosphere and were fun to do!!!
And just look at that cute little zombie cat!!!

Nurgle would be proud.

And I got some re-inforcements.

It just bugged me that I could not built all operatives for the Navy Breachers and the Kroot out of the box.

So Ebay it was!

So here they are- another heavy gunner for "Mira's Marauders" (Navy Breachers) and a sneaking Stalker for the Kroot, as well as another Pechra token.

Now I have at least pretty much all the possible operatives for the Kroot, and a bit more heavy firepower for the Breachers (they can take 2 gunners on the team) with another meltagun.

Reinforcements.jpg.0fb4513ccf3dbb70f5130f1c86eae92d.jpg

Great minds think alike  though I didn't get a second Pechra, I'm just not adding mine to the character.

Still really like the blue on your visors and screens, a great glow effect.

Right. I cannot believe I now have a week off work. Finally!

Planning on working on some more terrain and the second half of my Navy Breacher team.

I also did a thing.....

I mentioned before I suffer from new shiny syndrome. I am, however, as good as I can be right now. I had been away for the weekend, but sadly, there was a local Warhammer store at the mall and by pure accident, this guy jumped into my bag.

Awesome, suitably brutal miniature. Calls for a lot of gore.

I am not sure yet if I will convert him into a Night Lord, if he will stay a Templar, or if he will join the ranks of my "Generic Loyalist Red Marines". But, I need to focus now, and so he will have to wait for his makeover.

Finally got to finish some more stuff for my Kill Team project!

Here they are, the finished team of Navy Breachers, "Mira's Marauders", all present and correct and doing what they do best- sneaking about on derelict space hulks, always on the lookout for the enemies of mankind and some decent loot!

But I had this planned as a project for autumn and winter, anyways.

Such great stuff! The colors you picked for both the Voidsmen and terrain really work well together, provide a lot of depth without being distracting, and pop (especially the green and blue highlights). Great work!

Thank you!

I hope I can pull off something similar with the Kroot...

I am still playing around with them, trying to figure out how they would work best. Last thing I want to do is painting them in the boring old GW green.

  • 2 weeks later...

And I finished some more terrain. Slowly whittling away at it.

I fear November will be less busy for me painting wise- just because I am quite tight with my work schedule.

But we will see.

Finished my first batch of my Kroot Kill Team.

These are the "Cunning Cockatiels".

It is not the name they have chosen themselves, it is the name some of their human victims have given them, because of their appearance.

These Kroot are a mercenary gang that also does a bit of piracy on the side.

They will work for anyone they deem worthy of their service, however, they have no qualms of "terminating" the work relationship by eating the employers, if these show weakness or are about to lose against the other side. This kin band is fearless, brutal, not afraid to use dirty tricks and always hungry!

Their leader is Marrah Wah, an old and wise leader, adored by his kin band and they will follow him into death and beyond.

Currently, they are exploring a derelict space hulk on the look for usable loot- and just have heard that a team of human operatives are also exploring the same space hulk. This is not a problem. This just means that the meat supply is taken care of. The dinner bell has been rung- and the Cunning Cockatiels will not been kept wanting and waiting.

I just wanted to create a kin band that looks different from the usual boring green and brown. They should still look like they are exploring a dirty derelict space hulk, but as they are bird men, they will also have acute vision and perfect colour vision - that means, they will favour colourful clothing. They will be anything, but never drab.

In addition, I love cockatiels, and I have kept several of these funny little birds in my life and with this group of Kroot, I am going to honour their memory.

Now I have another 11 operatives to go....

They certainly aren't drab - you got the purple to work and those quills are nice and bright. And such sinister eyes!

Haha, I just took the "maybe purple does not work on Kroot" and thought "Challenge accepted!"

I actually quite like this colour scheme. Strangely enough, it DOES work with the rusted Space Hulk theme.

But I have to thank you for the idea of using different real bird colours. Otherwise I would not have had the spark of inspiration of doing cockatiels! And might have just painted these guys like everybody else.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here they are, my second batch of the Cunning Cockatiels!

Now they gained some heavy firepower, some sneakiness and a melee option.

These models are simply amazing. So much detail!

Mmm, that Cut Skin is carrying a tasty treat! Have just realised that I've left that off my model -oops. The purple leather works well with the quills but the eyes remain my favourite element!

  • 3 weeks later...

And I finally managed to finish up the rest of them.

Sadly, I have been busy in real life, and even when there was potential "hobby times" available I was sabotaged by landlords in their DIY attempt to renovate the downstairs flat.

They have managed to not only smash down several walls, but also cut the main power twice and now have also destroyed my access to the internet by cutting the phone line.

Their efforts are a sight to behold- what they lack in DIY skill, they surely make up for enthusiasm.

I leave it to everyone here to draw equivalent 40k comparisons...

So here they are, the "Cunning Cockatiels", led by their old and wise leader, Shaper Marrah Wah, hungry for some sweet and juicy human flesh.

I even took a few glory shots using the terrain I have already painted up.

Sadly, there is still a ton of terrain left to paint!

These miniatures were all a joy to paint. What a great collection of nice original models. I still love them very much.

Next up-

(besides painting up more of that terrain!)

I decided to finally paint up that squad of Intercessors that has been sitting around on my shelf for ages.

The Kill Team challenge that is going till the end of January is finally giving me the motivation to paint them up!

I know, these are not the most competitive Kill Team.

But they were never planned as one....

I only bought the anniversary Sergeant back in the day, all the others are free models I received as gifts.

I kept these guys to eventually paint them up as a troop option for my Thousand Sons, should I ever feel the urge to play Loyalists in 40k.

So I will paint of this squad of Intercessors as a Kill Team, in the colour of my Heresy Thousand Sons- in 40k, they are just going as "Generic Red Marines" (because the Inquisitors in my collection are keeping a very close eye on them!).

So I hope I can do them justice and give them an interesting paint job, even if they are "just" cheap free models.

(but I guess anything is better and more honourable than just have them sitting unpainted on my shelf for eternity)

Well, here I was thinking that I had not managed a lot this year.

But- behold!- I just took a picture of all the stuff I have painted  in 2022 and it is not too shabby after all.

Looking at this, I am actually quite happy with what I have achieved!

There is however still a lot to be done.

I still have a whole box with most of the Gallowdark terrain:

1132206784_terraintobedone010123.jpg.6191bc0c1e4e9b55a59d79b3cb339d78.jpg

I also have pretty itchy fingers concerning these juicy Imperial models (Inquisitors and Assassins; and yes, there is also the wonderful naked Astartes from Artel and the Warhammer+ Chaos Terminator)

841070073_Nextup.jpg.5f0726a621ab208a2a7de829716caca8.jpg

I did play around with the Intercessor Kill Team a bit more and changed the head of the leader.

He is now wearing the Indomitus Captain head- just to make it clear that he indeed is in charge. He also now carries around a book on his armour- after all "Knowledge is Power. Guard it well." The snap fit Sergeant got the anniversary model head instead.

981973367_Headswab.jpg.7de8b5fefd4b5303167b367af08402d8.jpg

Here is to 2023 and the hope I get some more stuff painted up!

Meet Sergeant Callimachus- he is part of a top secret Inquisition project. A project initiated by radical inquisitors of the elusive "Red Circle"; it is unthinkable for faithful servants of the Emperor.

Using forbidden gene-seed, they have created a chapter that is only known as "Generic Red Marines".

In reality, these marines carry the gene-seed of Magnus the Red.

Their armour is covered in Oaths of Moment and purity seals and benedictions to prevent mutation and warp-trickery.

These marines are used for fighting evil with evil- can the gene-seed of a traitor still be used to wipe out heresy?

Or is it itself heresy?

The mission of these marines is to acquire as much knowledge as possible, boarding space-hulks, exploring ancient ruins, fighting of rusting constructs in Necron Tombs.

After all, "Knowledge is Power. Guard it well."

Sergeant Callimachus himself carries the book of knowledge, to write down and intelligence he finds. He is armed with his trusted bolter and a sanctified power-sword.

His is followed by his brothers, who prefer the cleansing fire of bolter rounds, except for Brother Seth, who prefers to go up close and personal to the enemy and enjoys the scream of his chain-sword.

This Kill Team has been exploring a space-hulk for some time now.

And now they have run into some foul traitors, who seek to deny them their prize. This will not stand.

I am actually quite proud of how they turned out.

For a bunch of models which I got for free, I put quite a lot of effort in. I added script and battle damage all over the armour- these are not shiny soldiers marching on a parade ground. These are experimental tools used by the Inquisition in the shadows, for no eyes to see.

Now onto painting some more terrain....

Edited by Valkia the Bloody

I finished up a bit more terrain- the last of the little bits as well as 2 wall panels (still more than half left to do, though!).

I am quite proud of this, even if it took me longer than thought. But there is just so much amazing detail!

Love how it turned out!

Then I scoured Ebay, and got the Shadowvaults book.

722529927_ShadowVaults.thumb.jpg.f1322cb62eae12fb3ad8d24cb8f754ea.jpg

I actually got it for the Necrons, but it also got me thinking.... I have now a more than 1500 point Necron army, but sill no Deathmarks- so I got some used and already primed Deathmarks off Ebay. So now I have all the Necron options from Shadowvaults available!

849928885_Deathmarkssmall.jpg.7caab0a6b3661e454802e751bfd84bdc.jpg

Another thing....

looking at the awesome dark stealthy teams over at the Kill Team Challenge thread, I actually felt a strong urge to try something like that myself. I did not want to do another team of Astartes, however. Again- Shadowvaults proved illuminating- I would do Kasrkin!

Problem- I must be one of the people who do not like the new models! So I needed a proxy.

I always very much liked the Necromunda Enforcers Models.

So I just went for some conversions to assemble an "Inquisitorial Stormtrooper" -team, using Kasrkin rules. It is also quite close to the source material, since I have recently finished re-reading the Inquisition series by Dan Abnett. Especially the Eisenhorn trilogy- Eisenhorn employs both Arbites and Kasrkin in those books! And I even have his model to paint up sitting on my desk! I mean, what an opportunity. Too good to pass up.

My converted Inquisition Stormtrooper Kill Team (using Kasrkin rules)- note: one of the troopers carries an auspex and will count as a recon trooper

Sniper, Commander (powerweapon and pistol) and a grenadier (made the maul into a stick-bomb, which he throws)

1996948572_InquisitionTroopers2.jpg.228b8d23f960badec1b33a95e74b8663.jpg

And the special weapons guys- plasmagun, meltagun and volley-gun

882123415_Inquisitiontroopers3.jpg.f2c1502c6ed04db03fabe03dd30e39c8.jpg

I will paint them up in a limited, dark colourscheme, representing stealth operations. I actually should be able to do them quite quickly (I hope!).
