New Hachette Magazine Combat Patrol

Recommended Posts

Sorry to necro a thread, but received a notification from Royal Mail this morning that they are due to deliver a parcel from Hachette Partworks - I signed up to the pilot but subsequently cancelled it. Has anyone else who signed up had any notifications? The email from RM was in my junk folder but is ligit - no email from Hachette however, nor any money taken...

I had the same this week too, something should be arriving tomorrow... when I log on to hachette it says they processed a 'test access' or something on the 24th of May relating to combat patrol.

I did read somewhere that they were sending out the leviathan crusade book or something as a thank you for the people who did the trial run, not sure if it's that as I signed up for it but didn't actually manage to get into it but who knows.

Yep, as suggested a copy of Crusade: Tyrannic War received today. No covering letter or anything. I'm not up to speed with 10 ed and don't really game so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but how relevant is this book?

It was the opening volley of crusade content released alongside the beginning of 10th. It was originally packaged as part of the Big Rule Book inside the release box of 10th, Leviathan. It got split out from the other rules and released separately, which is what you have there.

Presumably there wasn't as much interest as the first couple of runs.

I would love to know how many issues were bought up by existing players compared to new bright-eyed converts.

Could GW try to map sales / revenue generated by the magazines compared to regular sales while the magazines are running (and shortly thereafter)?

Maybe enough folks got into the hobby from buying a few kits in the newsagents to make the partnership worthwhile.

They fired out a "Combat Patrol Update" email a few weeks ago (on the 24th May or thereabouts), thanking folks for signing up to the trial run (even if they didn't get anything from it) and as thanks were sending out the Crusade book as a freebie. Mail also gave the August release date update. Might have went to junk.

I don't think it will. This kind of feels like a wrap up of the set really, especially with GW changing the combat patrols.

Not really, the same thing happened last year with Stormbringer, as those who subbed early in the trial phase got some stormcast figures. Another thing to note that if it did struggle, they may have mixed things up and did another trial, like the aforementioned Stormbringer. I think they'll run it, but it won't sell as well as Imperium did (outside the odd issue as getting Von Ryans leapers for £6.99 is a steal as ebay prices is 3x as much in some cases).

It's almost certainly going to be released as planned, the contents were finalised well before the trial run started and any changes GW have made (or will make) to the main 40k Combat Patrol sets/rules won't influence the mag release beyond maybe some editorial work to the rules.

The last school I worked at in the UK still runs it's 40k club and it'd see good use there if it would be of neither use nor interest to yourself :)

I'd be more inclined to get on board if combat patrol were a better system. My group has found it a bit wonky at times and the replayability suffered as a result.

Yeah I can't say I'm a fan of Combat Patrol as a game. The idea of small games yes, but not the execution.

From the talk around AoS 4.0s equivalent system it sounds like they've learned a lot about making it into its own thing that stands up as it's own format rather than just a small game with wonky rules changes. Hopefully some of that will make it way back over to 40k at some point.

Maybe with 11th edition but that could be too soon to borrow anything from AoS 4th unless the designers are talking to each other

If you signed up for Combat Patrol and had a previous Hatchette subscription, double check the delivery address they are using. I got sent the Leviathan book, except rather than using the address I provided on the Combat Patrol sign up, they decided to use the address from my old Mortal Realms sub.

From 2021.

Ive moved twice since then. Going to be a fun trip down memory lane when I try to retrieve my book tomorrow.

yeesh - that's actually quite impressive levels of bad!

I had thought they had improved since the days of Conquest but this suggests otherwise

I gave my book to a local special education needs school that has a Warhammer club (pretty cool that they do in my honest opinion!)

It's great to have free stuff, but I already have the book so would have preferred to have been given the chance to opt out or something, seems like a waste.

Edit: To Clarify, I don't mean a waste giving the book to that school :D
