Feels pretty unlikely at this point that different rules for specialists will find their way into the 40k list.

Be cool to see just a single different/improved stat-line for the double-handed weapon, but also like a choice between like a torrent or something for the more spellslingery types.

I don't expect anything for the Index, but hold out for hope on the Codex entry maybe?

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

It will be trivially easy to add something like ‘Lampshade of Auntie Doris gives this unit re-roll charges.’

Don’t units like Kasrkin of Death Korp get some of the upgrades available in their respective KT box?

What I'm not a fan of the difficulty that players might have to tell different operatives from one another

edit: GW articles revealed 5 kinds of specialists. Some of them really don't differ much on appearance.

It's not that difficult to tie down which the specialists are though;

  • Nightfiend: The sergeant, has a necklace of body parts, and has a curved sword. CURVED. SWORD.
  • Abyssal: In the middle of casting fireball. Or rather an Aelindrachball™
  • Chooser of the Flesh: Biggest sword, actually two hands it, and let's his flames climb the blade.
  • Shadeweaver: The easiest to tell, casts a wavy shadow effect. Also has a dagger, painted like crystal unlike the metal blades of the rest.
  • Dirgemaw: Most difficult to tell, only difference to the basic mandrake seems to be the horizontal bones (finger bones?) in their hair and their top knot doesn't end in a tail (in fact nothing besides bones stick out of the topknot, not actual hair)

They do look very similar, to the point where there was speculation that tbey might be similar to Blades of Khaine and not have specialists at all, when the initial previews came out. One suggestion from discord to make life easier for opponents was to give the specialists topknots and the warriors sickles instead of knives (as well as distinctive paint jobs). Now that we've seen the sprue, we know they can all be equiped with sickles or blades (doubt there will be a difference in game - for KT or 40k).

Unsurprisingly up for pre-order next week.

I'll probably skip this box but the sooner it's out the sooner the Mandrakes will be available on  their own (hopefully).

I kinda wish the KT upgrade sprues were sold separately. The one with the legionnaires would make great kitbash material for 30k Word Bearers, and the upcoming Night Lords one even more.

Ill skip this one....dont like nightlords and i prefer the older mandrake sculpts.....the new ones are skinnier and their trousers are like fabius bile meets mc hammer.

Managed to get a copy, queue wasn't too bad (20 minutes) but price seems to be £85, not £80 as rumoured?

Might be to do with the terrain piece, which is two full-sized sprues rather than one like the scatter was in Salvation.

The reason I say that rather than just calling it price creep is because Warcry's Pyre & Flood box (also on preorder today) has a single-sprue terrain pieces and is still priced at £80. If they were just increasing prices generally, they'd have done it for both sets.

I’m just going to get the one box now. The Mandrakes are okay and certainly an upgrade to my current OG Gimps.

NL will sell to a mate.

Note sure about the terrain, though. It’s a fairly chunky LOS blocker for infantry, while still being accessible for them.

The bases should be different sizes (new on 28.5mm, old on 25mm) so the old mini image is slightly blown up. Not much in it though.

Hmm, seems to be that "mandrake-b" is a smidge to large. https://minicompare.info/?mandrake-2024-b=&mandrake-a= should be correct since it doesn't manage to cover the new ones base at a miniature spacing of either -300 or -310, but it's very subtle. I'll pass it on to the dev and see if he can fix it. Once it's fixed you might need to clear the cache in your browser for it to take.

OK the guy got back to me, and apparently "mandrake-b" in the first link is just that big, it even pokes over the rim of the base with its feet. Meaning all the old mandrake need is either rebase or a base extension ring (or honestly just leave it as is 25 to 28.5 is so negligible only the sweatiest of merds will complain) and they will fit right together.

If they came on 25mm bases, then that is the legal size for those models
