That shield captain is honestly terrible imho. The helmet, shield and spear individually are alright but the rest is just... bad.

Looks like he should be on a higher rubble base commanding troops to charge foward for him.

 

The model does seem to suffer slightly from the pose its in. Seems to be heavily greek in overall inspiration.

I don't get the big Votann-like crest they put on him; are there other Custodes with similar decoration? (Not a Custodes player so I don't really know their characters)

Nope, this is new in the collection of "stick random stuff on minis and pretend it's decoration" miniature design.

 

Edit: I'm usually overtly positive on most of GWs stuff but this is I think one of the worst minis they put out in years. It's so off the mark in the design cues of the rest of the range and feels more like an AOS stormcast than a custodes mini. Let alone the weird proportions, goofy face and random stuff stuck on it. "Huh the other custodians have some sort of decorative rope? Let's put a random curtain rope the length of the spear on there. Job done".

Yeah, I agree with the others that his proportions look a bit off, but it may be a case or bad camera angles.

 

Size issues apart, I like that Custodes are getting some more weapons options even if melta spears were already a thing trough Forgeworld.

They have a proven melta spear design and then use that monstrosity.

I’d be down for a lightly armoured shield skirmish unit though - akin to foot Venetari.

OMG, that shield captain is absolutely horrendous....terrible model!

Oof. Yeah this one is a miss. There's some good elements but the proportions and combination just are not working.

 

It is also utterly insane to me that they

didn't include Bolt-Caster and Adrasite options in this kit. And I'm wondering if there'll be an option for standard shield captain's to be equipped with a Guardian Spear and Shield? Like it is able to be built with the existing kits so there's no good reason not too. Does leave the Adrasite out in the cold though.

A very meh miniature.

I think they have tried to modernise Custodes ‘scale’ but wanted to avoid making him taller than the existing models…so they’ve sort of gone for making him barrel-chested but not quite gotten the proportions right.

 

I am tempted to try to get the battleforce (newbie Custodes collector) but that’s in spite of him not because he’s in it.

 

And that’s aside from not needing another Shield Captain. A dedicated Vexilla dude or a new specialist hero for SoS would of been a better choice if they felt they had to do a single character.

 

Personally I hope we see at least a few upscaled transitions into plastic of the existing resin stuff alongside the new codex. Followed at some future date by them revisiting the current plastics.

I also think the wide pose with the shield and spear isn't helping.

This orientation from the video doesn't look as bad, still not amazing but not as squat as I thought at first

The scale of the original plastics is honestly fine in my opinion. Keep in mind they do double duty for 30k and suddenly bumping up the scale there makes them look wayyy too big compared to the rest of the range imho.

 

It's the 40k marine models that are out of wack with all the other stuff (again, in my opinion)

 

Wouldn't say no to plastic grav tanks though

This new guy will be the only new model for the codex
