CSM 10th edition Master of Possession

This is a topic about Master of Possession in the 10th edition.

  • Do you use them?
  • How are you using them?
  • Do you think they perform well?
  • How do you equip them?
  • Do you attach them to any specific unit?
  • Is there a detachment that they are extra crucial?
  • Any Enhancements that you like to use with them?

Other Unit of the Week for Chaos Space Marines can be found in the link below.

The MoP and the Possessed got nerfed unnecessarily in the transition from Index to Codex. The loss of the 6+ FNP really hurts the MoP's usefulness. Currently, the MoP's biggest selling point is to get Enhancements on Possessed.  Take him if you want to give Possessed Mark of the Hound or something.

You might have some fun shenanigans with Soul Link, but that's not something you would see in a top-tier competitive list.

His current interaction with Possessed is why I prefer how 8th/9th handled characters. In the current Word Bearers detachment, if you want to mark your Possessed Khorne, you won't be able to use him to buff them.

The Master of Possession is a unit I very much wish Thousand Sons could use, alongside the Dark Commune.

The design of the mini is very cool, with the Burning Skulls and the fact that they are somehow levitating.

Kinda surprised that they can't lead Accursed Cultists, since they're kinda just ... Mortal Possessed?

The Master of Possession does a bunch of things that are interesting and unusual:

1.  It is the only leader that can attach to possesseds

2.  It is the only leader that gives a movement boost to its attached unit,

3.  He has a precision shooting weapon that is a pistol, which can get +1 to  hit and wound by putting a mortal wound on his unit.  Its also anti-psycher

4.  His melee weapon is also antipsycher, but not precision.

So, I see to roles for him now

a)  Leading possesseds, as he is still the only character that can do so, and his movement boost is really good for them as they have no shooting.  Unfortunately, he doesn't give them a boost to their resilience like he used to.

b)  Character sniping.  In an army with very little in the way of PRECISION weapons, he's one of the few ways we can do that.  Unfortunately, its only 18" and only 2 attacks - but it is Dam 3 and hitting and wounding space marine equivalents (with his harm his unit trick and hazardous) on a 2+ at AP -3... so, a decent chance of killing a minor character in one round.  Sure would be nice if it had more than 2 attacks, or his melee weapon was also precision, but those aren't the case.

Now, is that worth 70 points?  Probably not.  Except on possesseds, you are probably better off with a different character - sure, you loose out on the character sniping but they almost certainly do a better job actually boosting your attached unit.  I suppose there is an edge case for argument for attaching him to chosen for the movement bonus as you can still attach a Master of Executions for your melee boost - but I don't have any experience with chosen to comment on how useful that is.

Personally, I think he's a supremely cool model that is still paying for his previous abilities with his current point costs (and, it should be said, while he should probably be 10 points cheaper, that makes less difference this edition where one often has 10-20 points left over at the end of list building).  I'll probably keep fielding him with my possesseds because I like my model (and my possesseds), though I'm not certain how much utility he still brings them.

For the character hunting role, he's probably best in raiders as his short range benefits from the extra movement and it allows him to benefit from his boost on advance rolls and still shoot.

i agree with what has been previously said.

I have however also been tinkering with the use of the MoP in a Deceptors list with the cheap 5 pt soul link upgrade. if you have a dark apostle somewhere in the army, you can give your possessed +1 to wound, coupled with the 'Pick them off' strategem, you have full to hit rerolls and possibly reroll wounds too. In this instance, I'd probably keep these possessed in strategic reserves.

Admittedly, this is a lot of work to make a mediocre unit (possessed), good. But i think it might work as an alternative to the chosen melee strike force. of course, with soul link you also have the flexibility of using a MoE for the rerolls instead of the strat, or use a chaos lords abilities to use the strat for free.

Im unsure if the Dark commune cult demagogue ability would be allowed to work with soul link. it would be absolutely brilliant. Dark ritual allows advance and charge, +1 to hit and wound. combined with pick them off strategem, you'll have created one of the most deadly melee units in the game.
