CSM 10th edition Chaos Spawn

This is a topic about Chaos Spawn in the 10th edition.

  • Do you use them?
  • How are you using them?
  • Do you think they perform well?
  • Do you attach them to any specific unit?
  • Is there a detachment that they are extra crucial?
  • Any Enhancements that you like to use with them?

Chaos Space Marine Unit of the Week Links

I used these guys a fair bit in 9th, where their fast speed, small foot print, and unique regenerating ability made them a great objective grabber, action monkey and general annoyance unit.  Unfortunately, other than speed the current rules do none of that.

Their OC decrease ability is interesting on paper, but rarely relevant - this is an edition where you kill things off objectives to take them, not one where you generally have a large scrum grinding each other away until you swing the balance of OC your direction.  Plus, in the rare occasions where that does occur, the very short range of that ability and the relative large foot print and flimsiness of the unit means its pretty easy to kill in the few instances where it being alive could make a difference.  This is combined with them not generating any OC themselves, meaning they are only good as part of a combo with another unit, but really don't bring much to the table otherwise meaning that it doesn't really do anything on its own if its combo partner is destroyed.  So it really suffers from being kind of a 1 trick pony whose trick is situational, not very good and easy to block.

So not a big fan this edition, which is a shame, as they were a lot of fun the last one.  The model certainly doesn't help, but with the rules as they are there isn't much of an incentive to build one's own take on the unit (whether through converting, kitbashing, sculpting or whatever).
