Incomplete or not, I'm a big miffed about the janky rule book in the box.  This is the most expensive starter box we've had and we get the jankiest soft cover rulebook of any edition since 2nd edition.  Maybe no one else cares but it annoys me to no end.

I care.  I fondly remember the mini rulebook from Assault on Black Reach, and it influenced me to get the Armageddon box.  The fact that it's not a complete rulebook is absolute :cuss:.

Why so angry? There's been more soft covers rulebooks than hardback in the boxes. Leviathan, dark Imperium and indomitus were all hardback door wedges with vast amounts of fluff that jacked up the book weight and made it unwieldy for gaming. 8 editions of 40k have had softcover books by comparison.

I get the frustration with incomplete, but not the portable, rules only rulebook.

I don't have my box yet, it's in the post.

I love the older smaller scale rulebooks.

But this is not the rules, it's some of the rules and then directs us to the app.

News Alert GW the printed version of the hyperlinks didn't work that way.

It's not a PDF.

If they want to drive everyone to the app just do it, don't tease us.

On a positive note I'm dying to cut into these minis! They look so good, the stuff I'm saying online is great.

I think the separate rule book is identical to the Armageddon rule book with an ultramarine on the cover, so it is missing the additional rules.

One thing that might never have happened, but isn't there, is like a brief walkthrough guide to playing the game with the models included in the box? You know, mission one is just intercessors vs boyz to move, shoot, charge, fight, battleshock, then mission 2 gives you a leader, and mission 3 gives you the vehicle thing.  I may very well be conflating this with other editions or boxed sets or something though.

There wasn’t anything like that in the 9th and 10th Launch boxes either. They'll be in the starter sets though (though that was definitely the case with 9ths starter sets not sure about 10th)

I've had an absolute blast with them so far. Genuinely think the new Captain and Nobz are some of my favourite ever 40k minis!

Mine arrived yesterday and I have to concur. The minis are great and I built some ork characters and nobz last night. Hopefully get it built and primed by the weekend - heat permitting.

Where are the terrain layouts? I prefer my own set ups but initially I wouldnt mind using the "proper" layouts but they arent in the rule book.

Because they aren't part of the base rules, they're part of the tournament stuff, which is all located on the Community website; https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/downloads/warhammer-40000/

Under Event Companion in the third section.

Is it just me, or does it feel odd that this box didn't come with any dice or red whacking sticks (I guess they were meant to be used as rulers)...

I had to dig into my "Box of dice that have failed me for the last time," when gifting this "starter set" to my step-nephew.

They kinda-sorta have to be since they´re ETB minis and need to be assemblable (not a real word, I guess) without glue.

Could be wrong but wasn't the tactical rock optional on some of the 9th launch stuff?

I will doff my cap and apologise to the general concept. I am glad they're less in your face than they suggested. I am however still upset that they're viewed as the "proper" way to play.

After building the first marines and reading into the fluff book from the new box I had some thoughts about it.

Spoiler

Why are the BA even featured so prominently on the box art and articles around the third war on Armageddon, when in fact they weren't the first to arrive, nor one of the bigger forces deployed? Marneus Calgar took the lead, while Captain Sendini was "only" the captain of the fifth company.

Also I wonder if it's really to much to ask, if they would include at least some optional chapter specific bits within a box with such a price tag? I mean, many of the characters have multiple helmets. How much of an effort would it be to throw in some spare bits with BA iconography? Looking at the captain he looks very ultramariny to me with his cingulum and the crista helmet (optional). Would have been a real treat if there was also an BA deathmask helmet or alternate nipple armour. Just saying...

This edition will see 40 Years of 40K, and they were on the cover of the first 40K box released. The box cover is a reimagining of the original box cover, with marines, orks and grots in roughly the same position as the 2nd ed cover.

The last few haven't, this is a launch box primarily aimed at existing players rather than a starter set, is the apparent reasoning.

Pondering the prizes for the Deathmire draw - the 1000pts of Orks that includes some of the new releases is valued at £537.50 and the marine one is £447.50

Those actually seem fairly sizable releases. New Warboss, Trukk, 2xBoyz, 3 Warbikes, 5 Lootas/Burnas and a Battlewagon only comes to about half the points and the total prize value based on GW's retail price. Leaving space for Nazdreg, an alt build Battlewagon (perhaps a more dedicated shootier gunwagon/tank), Burnas/Lootas and other new surprises.

I like big hardback books and don't care about it being portable.  I wanted a hardback door wedge.

The Mission Deck also provides 'guidance' for setting out your own terrain.

Could be, I'm honestly not sure. I can also see wanting it to be more separate (I think the "front feet" probably didn't need to be attached to the rocks, although it probably has its sprue-cutting reasons, but I won't pretend to know a lot about that). But they do have to be able to attach to the rock (and by extension, the base) without glue, given the format.
Ideally they'd have them attach to the rocks or the base, but I can see why they don't.

Personally, I'm cutting most of the tactical rocks up and/or covering them with other stuff, but I think they have a value beyond "looking cool" (if you think they look cool), in that they help pose the miniature at an angle where you actually see their faces, rather than just the top of their heads, when they're placed on the tabletop.

One thing I found rather underwhelming was the art in the "Operation Imperator" book. The first couple of pages are three full colour, two-page spreads that I barely registered until I though "wait a minute, did I just flip past a whole lot of artwork?" then, when I went back and looked properly, they're almost exceptionally "meh". That seems like a bit of a wasted opportunity, to put it mildly. It almost makes me think they were replacement pieces chosen at the last minute or something like that.

However, I really liked how they went into a lot of detail on various locations and situations on Armaggedon - lots of cool little details and ideas for battles (or even campaigns), as well as things that might spark ideas of your own.

I think it'd have been interesting to explicitly leave a bit more room for more developments and reinforcements, so your own guys could slot right into the story, but that's easy enough to just add in your head.

Overall, I'm very happy with the box, although I still find it both baffling and unacceptable that all the core rules aren't in the core rules book.

I can see why you were underwhelmed, @Antarius. I feel that the this two pages are atmospheric, part of a sequence building to the 'fight' illustration and then the large diorama.

There is a sketchy quality to modern 40k art and sometimes proportions feel quite 'off'. I wonder if there is intent to it for two reasons -

It isn't worth copying. By that, I mean it can't be used by people to generate 3rd party items as things like bolt rifles are too thin, breastplates too deep.

It is subservient to the miniatures. If you want to pore over detail, the dioramas set those beautifully painted miniatures in dynamic settings and are a lure to generate mini sales.

I've only had a skip through the book but I really like some of the later artwork and the plates of the other chapters. I do think there is a 'make this your own' feeling to the box - it doesn't have to be Blood Angels.

I certainly think they're meant to be atmospheric, I just think they are extremely mediocre.
I also think you're right that a lot of this is on purpose; it really does seem to be a fact that artists can't draw/paint things that aren't existing products (to the point where I think people correctly predicted the Venom Crawler from an illustration). Which is perhaps understandable, but does make the current art feel a lot less "artistic", for want of a better word.

I absolutely like the plates and heraldry section, as well as most of the lore and I do think it's pretty easy to just mentally slot your own guys in there.
