Lysimachus
Am I right in thinking that you will be able to build a divergent Chapter list from just the free PDF Index, but if you wanted to also include regular Astartes units, you'd need to buy the dex? For example, you could build a SW list from just their pdf if it was led by Logan and Bjorn, and only included WGTDA, GH and BC (or any of the pure SW datasheets)... ...but if you wanted to then mechanize that list with vehicles like Impulsors/Repulsors/Gladiators, you'd need the dex? And presumably the free Index will be replaced by a bought Supplement (or whole stand alone Codex?*) when the time comes, so you'd also need to buy that eventually? *If it was a stand alone book, it would have to duplicate all the basic Astartes datasheets, which seems unlikely? It looks likely you are correct, supplements are a free index, supplement units are therefore free and stand alone to acces. Core marine units needs the core codex. A new book, likely supplement, will follow at some point to gate them. Orange Knight
But you'll still need to own the codex to access the unit rules in the app, I imagine. The chapter selection is a step you take after selecting Marines as a faction. Also... you'll probably lose the free rules once the actual supplements drop Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/388419-codex-space-marines-multi-part-intercessor-vanguard-vet-teaser-legends-culling/page/29/#findComment-6186173 Share on other sites

But yeah the clock will be ticking on them, with the 40k anniversary next year I'd be shocked if we don't see most of them then. Antarius
Well, it is certainly a valid choice to refrain from buying GW rules and miniatures in 2026. I don't think it'll be PDF, I suspect it'll be app updates, or a string of text changes in the faction pack. It seems unlikely they'll give free reprints of Chaos units. So I suppose to clarify what I mean, they're removing the existing supplements, replacing them wholesale with free access index documents because the changes are so large and diverse they don't want to ham-fist the current 10th ones onto the 11th codex. This is not true apparently for any of the other marine factions ala chaos or grey knights, who just get a data slate of updates in I assume the app. I can only guess that either getting the app to work with supplements cross-edition got funky, or the sheer volume of work needed to correct the supplements in line with the codex (in terms of rules access and detachments) was too much. It all says to me everyone should have gotten a reset in honesty. 38 minutes ago, Antarius said: Well, it is certainly a valid choice to refrain from buying GW rules and miniatures in 2026. Mogger351
I do enjoy they go from "once per game doesn't sound much but its high impact" to by the end you have double dips, always ons and enhanced versions. Double CP again with HQ requirement seems to be a trend. Is it a trend of just a design decision at this point? We've had three editions of "Character gives extra resource". Every faction should have access to it so that it doesn't become a defining trait for any other faction, tho I do wish it wasn't on something like a captain; they tend to die after doing their duty so it's tougher to keep them alive for all 5 rounds while also doing their job of "Kill". Karhedron
Pretty much as expected but reassuring to see. The question is how this applies to Divergent Chapters. For example, do Blood Angels get Doctrines or do they swap it out for Red Thirst (or does that remain a Detachment ability)? I can see Doctrines being good for BAs. Army-wide Advance + Charge for a turn is going to be a big speed boost and will be a decent indirect buff for Dante. My hunch based on the wording is that Combat Doctrines will be for all Marines since at least one datasheet ability seems to interact with it. Well yeah, but it's not that simple for some factions. I imagine for eldar it'll get slapped on an autarch when people maybe don't want to use one, or maybe for nids the hive tyrant, tau a commander suit etc? Dark eldar will be funny "you play cabals or have half the cp!" It's more punishing to some fluffy army builds than others. I think we will have Doctrines until we get a full supplement, if they do change. I'm not convinced we will get different ones. BA are somewhat singular in that they have their own datasheets for the DC version of things like the captain; could change their rules to not interact with Doctrines and be Red Thirst specific. But I do think that the regular captain interacting with Doctrines basically seals it that ALL space marines of the non GK variety will have Doctrines as their standard. 2 minutes ago, Mogger351 said: Well yeah, but it's not that simple for some factions. Orange Knight
The doctrines are a solid faction rule, no question. They do also have a very "Codex compliant" feel to them. Personally, I would make a case for BA, DA, SW and BT to have a different rule of their own. Of these chapters, you could make the best argument that Dark Angels could make use of a Doctrine-like ability, as they have a very Tactical and disciplined outlook on warfighting. But so far, nothing is blowing my socks off. I haven't seen anythinng with the "wow" factor of Oath. Now, it might all be well and good without it. If no such rule exists in the new codex, I'm hoping that the various unit profiles are all good enough to function effectively on thier own merit. A lot of units since 8th edtition were wholly reliant on re-rolls to achieve any kind of result.
